We were out hiking at nearby Nolde State Forest and worked up a powerful hunger. I had figured to stop somewhere and as we were headed back, I remember seeing this sandwich shop and thought we might try it out. We're glad to have stopped! We had a turkey on a soft roll and an Italian on a hard roll. Both were great and were loaded with toppings. The tomatoes were very ripe, thick cut, and juicy. The onions, plentiful and strong, and the rolls delicious. The service was very friendly, too. I enjoyed the tomato relish on the italian and next time will ask for more and also light oil and vinegar. I think I'd also prefer the cheese on top of the meat instead of atop the lettuce, tomato, and onions. The sandwiches were huge and delicious and several other locals were in getting their suppers while our subs were being made. We were not prepared to not have an indoor seating area but the gals said there was an outdoor seating area so we enjoyed our sandwiches at the two clean picnic tables. We really enjoyed our subs and will be back the next time we visit Nolde. read more

I first visited this location shortly after they opened, almost 10 years ago now. That experience was so godawful bad, I vowed never to return. I decided to try their pizza that time, and it was literally on the level of a Chef Boyardee pizza kit from my childhood. The sandwich we got was also not up to par compared to the original location. Well, I wound up here again yesterday. I called their other location to place a to-go order, got a busy signal, then tried again a minute later. But I called the wrong location by mistake. Since it was just sandwiches and had been so long, we decided to just go there anyway since it was our mistake. And that's what it was, a MISTAKE. I got a cheesesteak, and I did not care for it. They used Provolone cheese instead of American, but they didn't melt it , they just put it on the sandwich and put the meat on top. Either the meat or sauce had a slight sour taste that was not very good. Not enough meat on the sandwich either, as the last 1-1.5 inches on each end of the sandwich had none (they didn't cut the roll to the end). The ham on roll was not very good either, with way too much mayonnaise, hardly any tomato, and bland onions. And we specifically asked for them to cut our sandwiches as we'd be eating them in the car on the way somewhere, and they forgot to do so apparently. The other location is much better, so drive the extra 10 miles and give this one a HARD PASS. read more

Sandwiches were $15 for large and they were barely 12" in length. For $15 I was expecting at least an 18" roll They show cheese in every sandwich photo. No cheese was on it. I got a tuna, and there was only tuna spread on one side of the roll, although it was pretty good tuna. They put almost an entire onion worth of onion slices on it. Not my favorite sandwich. Damn you for misleading me and making me think this place would be okay. I don't think I've ever given a 1 star review before. There was nothing in the Mohnton area except for some mediocre pizza places or really expensive places, neither of which I was feeling, so I thought I would stop by this sandwich shop. I would much rather have gone to the gas station next door and picked up food there, no joke. Their ingredients look like old Walmart ingredients. Lettuce is like mcdonalds quality, all shredded and soft and sad. Even the onions didn't have flavor. Everything was just so bland. I added on their pepper-in-oil topping and they gave me two small peppers and even those lacked flavor. And they had the nerve to charge $7+ for this?? Also, holy crap, the employees were so unfriendly. We walked in and they didn't acknowledge us (it's a very, very small space so there's no way they missed us), and so we said hi because it got real awkward real fast, and they just looked at us like they hated us and didn't say anything and continued making their crappy sandwiches for some pick-up orders. No "hello," "I'll be right with you," nothing. If they didn't absolutely have to talk, they didn't. They would try to do nonverbal answers (shrugs, nods, shaking their heads, handing me a menu without saying anything) as much as possible. I felt bad because I seriously thought that maybe they were deaf/mute, or speech-impaired. I don't mean that in an ableist way at all--I'm saying that's how atypical their communication (or lack thereof) was. No public bathrooms. Limited toppings (lettuce, tomato, cheese, oil, mayo, seasoning, pepper-in-oil, onion). The way they wrap their sandwiches, you end up unwrapping it face down, so when you pick up your sandwich all the meat and most of the veggies has fallen out. How is this place still in business? They also don't toast their bread. This place should just be replaced with a Potbelly sandwich shop. read more

While we did not try the sandwiches from here, we did try the pizza. The pizza tasted like a pizza you'd get from the frozen aisle at a grocery store. The crust was flaky and hard and there was hardly any sauce on the pizza. There were tiny pepperoni on that did not cover the pizza and the sausage wasn't like regular pizza sausage. It was like breakfast sausage cut in slices. The sandwiches may be good but we probably won't return to find out. The workers were friendly and the customer service was decent. read more

We love their hoagies but the cheese steak we got tonight was awful. We were home to eat it within 7 minutes, it was not hot, cheese was cold and not melted, roll was mushy, and they put it upside down when they wrap it so all of the meat fell out. I would give Screpesi's 10 stars if I could. If you come to the Reading area, and don't eat at one of their two locations, you have *wasted* your time. Not only is this by far the best sub shop in town (fight me, 70 years in business, I'm a third generation customer) I would argue that it's one of the best sub shops in the Greater Philadelphia area. The ham and cheese sub is delicious, as is the ham and cheese salad. Both are favorites of mine. The Reading location is the original, but both locations serve up that ORIGINAL Mom and Pop goodness, along with local snack favorites. Either location is a MUST, when you're in the area. Maybe the negative reviewers should stick with Subway. read more

I have gone here many times when i was a kid. There food was always good as I remembered. But on 2 occassions we went to the Knauers location and we had one of the adult family member serve us. She was rude. She rushed through the orders. She made snarky comments. Apparently other people have dealt with this 58 year old. This is not a new thing come to hear. I tell you this is the last time EVER i will get sandwiches from this establishment. They should be shut down. The owners must be rolling in their grave to see something they started to have someone in the family with horrible customer service. Thats not good business practice. I love Screpesi's in Reading & was super excited when they opened this shop closer to my home. Unfortunately, it's been a big disappointment. Though the sandwiches & rolls are good - everything else is awful. Customer service is nonexistent & the employees are plain rude. Our first experience was during their opening week. We ordered 3 sandwiches. After waiting 25 minutes, we happily head home with our sandwiches to find out EVERY sandwich is made WRONG. Order no onions - there's onions. Order with peppers & onions - there's no peppers or onions. Order a sandwich plain with cheese - there's no cheese, but there sure is lettuce, tomato & onions. Are you kidding me? We called to complain and were told that they're busy. Hmmm....that was enough to make us stay away for awhile. So we try again. This time we call in our order. The girl who takes the order repeats everything back to me. Awesome! She says it should be about 20 minutes. Perfect! Guess what? I arrive 20 minutes later and there's no sandwiches. I ask when they'll be ready. Ohhhh...it seems they never made them and they lost the order. Oops. They took the order (again) and told me it would be 20-25 minutes since they were busy and there were people ahead of me. Totally ignoring the fact that they made a mistake and lost/forgot my order. No apologies or concerns from the incompetent people that work at this shop. I asked to speak to a manager. Total joke. He was clearly annoyed to be bothered and blew me off with a "Sorry, but we're busy." No real apology, nor did he try to make it right it any manner. I was totally blown away by how obnoxious and rude every employee was. Seriously - none of them could have cared less about their job or the customers. Ingredients are fresh, the lettuce is crisp, and the onions are flavorful! I'm so glad that they opened up a location nearby. The ATV rolls are so fresh and the quantity of meat is generous. This is our go to now that V&S is lousy. They could be a little more friendly, though. Also, please write down the order. They ask what we want about ten times by the time they are done making the sandwich. Just write it down...it's not that difficult. read more

Expensive sandwich shop. A large sub today was $8.00. That includes almost nothing. All "extras" which is onion, peppers, whatever is on a normal sub is .50 each item . Got a large meatball, had 5 meatballs, sauce, powdered cheese that's it. I normally would get onions, provolone cheese, and some peppers, and that would have helped this sandwich a lot. But that would have cost me $9.50 for a large sub. Too much. Very plain, mass produced out of a bucket flavor meatballs. Heard the microwave ding when they were thawing, and heating up the meatballs. What kind of sandwich shop is this? They have no variety on their menu, called a sandwich shop and dont even have burgers. I ordered a cheese steak sandwich with no sauce, no onions, they told me that the steak is already mixed with sauce and onions, that tells me that the steak is premade and just sitting out waiting to be heated up, kinda nasty... how hard is it to put steak on the grill, put cheese on it and put it in a roll? Apparently too hard.... also I ordered fries and they didnt have that either? They dont have hot sides either.... so I made it really simple for them. A ham and cheese hoagie. They added the ham and cheese and no mayo, didnt ask if I wanted mayo or not so I assumed it would be on... so I guess they don't have mayo either. This place is pathetic. read more

Don't go here. Worst cheesesteak I ever had. I believe the meat, cheese and sauce is made in advance and just reheated. The onions and cheese weren't even visible. Couldn't taste them either. The sandwich was cold and it tasted terrible. When we walked in, the place was semi dark and deserted.
