This job was more a saga or an epic than a quick job. Whenever Mike McCormick was directly…read moreinvolved, he or his subcontractors fixed issues; however, they made many unforced errors. On top of that, Mike does not follow through on his commitments.
The job was done at the beginning of May.
He made multiple promises to have someone out, but goes dark for weeks. He did tell me at one point he had some family issues, but only after I sought him out. I finally through in the towel.
First, the door contractor (carpenter?) installed the door with large air gaps around the weatherstripping. As a result, the door did not close properly. A second person had to come out and "shim" the strip so it would close properly and stop the light from coming through. I am not a carpenter, but my father was. He was a "do it right the first time" guy, which he instilled in me, so I expect experts to fe
Also, I asked to have a new threshold installed. They installed a smaller one, so there was a big gap between the threshold and my tile. At first, the carpenter wanted to put a painted piece of wood in the gap. We called Mike, and he sorted it and arranged a tiler to fill the area properly. Some tiles needed to be removed and replaced with ones that filled the gap. I will get to this later in this review.
Next, the painter spent about 6 hours painting the door and molding, all the while talking on the phone. She sprayed the door in place. She put up plastic sheeting, but did not enclose her work in a tent to prevent overspray. White overspray dust was on my furniture, floor, and stairs. Multiple white blotches appeared on my brown stucco, and she cleaned her spray gun by blowing it into my jasmine bush, hitting the stucco next to the bush. Finally, the finished product had vertical spray lines and an inconsistent texture.
Now on to the tiler. I was very specific that the tiler had to understand and have experience with Basalt tiles. Basalt is very porous and sensitive to leaching calcium from the concrete. It must be soaked before installation. The tile removal and installation were level and even. He did a very nice job; however, he applied the sealer while the tile was still wet. The end result was splotchy, and he left sealer splotches on other tiles not part of his installation.
Mike offered to clean the overspray, but I could not leave it on the floor and furniture. I cleaned it up. He offered to repaint the door, but I have a trusted painter who owed me some time from a previous job. The tile is still unresolved. The last I heard from Mike was August 7th, two weeks ago, who commited to getting back to me that day. I am a patient person, but at my wit's end.
As of about Oct 1 we agreed to part ways. He gave me a discount on the remaining payment, which was more than fair since it was 1/4 of the total job. Door now closes tight and no light shows through. Adhesive shims were used however to mitigate the gaps. Sorry Mike, I would not recommend.
