Graham was a wonderful server. We were a group of 6 tonight. It was slow in the restaurant. Richard and I ordered a vegan pizza... no cheese, grilled onions, basil, mushrooms with a tomato base. And an arugula salad without the goat cheese. The salad with pine nuts was tasty. The restaurant could accommodate our diet willingly. Our pizza was last to be served... about 5-6 minutes after all the other food was served. That was okay, but certainly not ideal. The other pizzas that were ordered looked covered with cheese and ingredients. While ours did taste good, the flavors in the sauce were quite nice, the toppings were very skimpy. I could hardly see any onions or basil and sparse mushrooms. Speaking from experiences of pizza at other places with our vegan request, typically the pizza is more loaded with the vegetables since we are not having any cheese (I.e. cost savings to the restaurant) to compensate and make the pizza look more substantial. It is a policy I would strongly recommend for us vegan folks. We would then return with company who would order the items off the menu... now we have no incentive to return because the pizza was ok but not worth the price. This is my humble opinion based on our travels outside of beaufort South Carolina. Here is a plus... we asked for a gimlet cocktail... not on the menu, but the bartender knew what it was and did a nice job making it!! read more

This is the place.... NOT to go if there is a sense of urgency in your schedule. It took over 15 minutes for anyone to give us attention. I think it queer no spaghetti was listed? Once our order was taken it was revealed spaghetti was available.... ON THE NIGHT menu.... Go figure? The craft beer selection was good, I enjoyed a Nebo. Meal got to us under 20 minutes, portions were generous. Sadly my shrimp was overcooked, wife's Italian salad was overwhelming, good for a couple... We came for lunch and were absolutely blown away by the service and food. I ordered the lasagna and my husband ordered the chicken Parmesan. Both came out hot and were large portions. Vastly overpriced for the quality. Calls itself an Italian Kitchen and boasted about getting pasta machines from Italy. For what purpose? there may be 3-4 pasta dishes on the menu with heavy emphasis on pizza (overcooked at that). If you want pizza, there are much better places. Second trip there today because first time was so good. I'm not a pasta, Italian food sort of guy but my wife and I will be stopping here whenever we go to town. Very good service, clean restrooms, quite enough for conversation and food arrived hot and tasty and quickly. Good place to bring family, have a business lunch or dine with your sweetheart. Try the crab dip. Comes in I hot little cast iron skillet with a cheesy topping and some sort of delicious crunchy toast. My Quebecois sweetheart says it's called crostini, I think, I just know that it's good. Ordered eggplant fries which I was skeptical about 'cause, ya know, eggplant? It was delicious! Sort of like fried green tomatoes, which, being southern, I love only these were better! Wife ordered a fungus (mushroom) pizza. I was skeptical about that too and I'm looking forward to having the leftovers for supper tonight. All in all, a great, informal, dining experience and we will be going back for more. I might even learn to like pasta. Very much recommend trying this place. Also, reasonable price for the quality of the food and service. The food was very good and very different. I have not experienced much Italian like this and I love it! Maybe authentic? I've never been to Italy so I don't know but it is tasty! The inside of the restaurant is just stunning. There is outdoor seating as well as indoor. And they have garage doors that I'm assuming they open up at certain times for fresh air inside the restaurant. Service was amazing. Our waitress was very patient and helpful with questions about the menu. Our desert, the cannoli, was to die for. Truly amazing. I loved my dish overall. The scratch made pasta is pretty good. The remodeled Scratch had an OK atmosphere. Lots of windows and wood, so I wouldn't really classify this restaurant as romantic or cozy. Service was fine. The menu wasn't surprising or creative. Another yawn for the Beaufort dining scene. I started the evening with a blackberry limoncello martini. It had potential but was not well balanced. The sweetness factor overwhelmed all other flavors. A splash of soda and more acid would have helped. My husband started with a small Caesar salad. It tasted super fresh and was nicely tossed with the a tangy and punchy dressing. I ordered the PEI mussels (an appetizer) for my main. My husband opted for the chicken parm. I struggled to pull the first mussel out of its shell and surprisingly when I finally did I ended up tasting a fishy blob. I have eaten bushels of these bivalves in my lifetime and have never encountered a flavor profile such as this. It seriously ruined my appetite. I ate a few more and though not as fishy, something was just "off". My husband's entree looked troubling once it hit the table. The fresh spaghetti was over sauced. No legitimate Italian establishment would commit this major faux pas. (Nor would they -gasp- serve overcooked pasta.) The chicken was stringy, with no crispy crust and little cheese. Just not a pleasant dining experience. Somehow we were not too surprised after reading many reviews. I guess we were just hoping for better results. I was visiting a friend who lives in Port Royal and has been wanting to go try this relatively new place. I read that the pasta is... made from scratch, I just had to go. We arrived at about 6:00 and the place was pretty empty. It quickly filled up though. Our waitress was friendly and answered all of our overly curious questions. She quickly brought our drinks and took our order, but with the restaurant filling quickly, it took a bit to get our order out. The meals were worth the wait, as was the focaccia, which wasn't served until mid-meal. I got the Casarecce, which appeared to not have much crab but once I started eating, the jumbo lumps were abundant and flavorful. My friend got the Rigatoni with Parmesan sauce. We both devoured our meals! As the descendent of a central Italian family, my grandmother always made her own pastas. Scratch's pastas were light and flavorful and prepared to perfection. We could barely move but opted to share a portion of homemade southern Italian tiramisu. The creamy filling was amazing and the coffee cream sauce was just right! Definitely NOT what you can get at Publix! But who wants that?! read more

Scratch, an Italian restaurant, just opened and I was so impressed by the food, the venue and wonderful friendly service! The food is all made on site thus the name. They offer authentic Italian food that was so very good and different than the American version of Italian food. It was delicious! They also have a full bar with a great wine list. Going out to Scratch was decision made but I wouldn't call it a great one. My fiancé and I are Beaufort locals and wanted to try something new. Upon arrival the restaurant was set up very nice, decor was bright and beautiful, I loved the wood and large windows. However the service was sub par, the food was over priced and the pasta was definitely over cooked. The blackberry lemon cello martini is WAY too sweet, we sent it back and thankfully it was taken off our ticket. In all honesty the food and service was not worth an $80 bill. read more

This was my first time dining at Scratch. It was "okay". The wine selection was very affordable by the bottle. The Caesar salad was good (not an authentic Caesar salad, but fresh and good). The dessert was tasty (Tiramisu). My husband's pasta (Rigatoni) was good. However, I got the Casarecce pasta (with lump crab) and it wasn't very good. In my opinion the crab did not taste fresh (past its prime). I couldn't eat it. I let the server take my plate with 95% of the food still on it and she didn't question it. Not a large menu and not very accommodating for allergies or restrictions. Our food was served cold while waiting for another dish to come out. Lasagna was too small of a portion. Spaghetti was overcooked and too soft. Salads were great. Pizza flavor was great but because it was served cold the cheese was not melted like it should be. We are locals and have dined here several times, as well as Nick's other establishments. This one is a true winner. The homemade pasta is the star of the show, as is the calamari! That said, the pasta treatments are becoming a bit too heavy-handed, as are the portion sizes. Quality, not quantity, as well as simplicity should be the goal. I don't know what others have eaten at Scratch but it is not an authentic Italian restaurant. I stopped by yesterday for a sandwich and ordered the meat ball sandwich. The bread was really Tough and the meat balls were not homemade-something out of a can, like dog food! The sandwich had absolutely no flavor. Guess I chose the wrong day for stopping by. My wife and I went there for our 25th Anniversary. The food was amazing. We had a mussels appetizer that was generous and delicious. The sauce was perfect for dipping the ample bread they gave us. I had a bucatini pasta with seafood and my wife had raviolis. Both plates were perfect. The wine and tiramisu we shared made for a perfect dinner. Our waitress Mellisa was great. I have to agree with another review, about "Scratch" this one OFF your list!! I truly wanted to love it, as I love the idea of home made pasta!! But- - I just wasn't impressed. It used to be a burger casual place, and it seems the only thing that changed was the Prices, and the menu... nothing was re-done to make it fancy, or high end, yet they charge high end prices. They also provide low quantity amounts. It was a bummer my husband was still hungry after having spaghetti and meatballs (looked like a kids plate a spaghetti factory!!). Small tiny meatballs, and not that much pasta.... When you ask for additional bread it's $4 more for a cup full of small slices. It just seemed like a rip off. The flavor was ok. The people who work there are nice, but in t-shirts, and for the price point I just expected more!! read more

While the service was great the food was let's say different. Their menu was difficult, used a lot of Italian words, had to google the words to see what they meant. I just wanted spaghetti with meatballs & that's what i ordered to the tune of $24. No salad included. The sauce was spicy which surprised me & there were pieces of something semi hard in it..picked all of those out. According to google that was probably cured pork jowl.They provided bread with oil to dip it in but the oil was just olive oil with no seasonings, bleh! My daughter-in-law ordered a chicken entree & it was under cooked & tasteless but she did enjoy the polenta that came with it. A short menu but the selections are wonderful! The ravioli was an unexpected treat. The service was excellent. Even for a busy night and we walked in without a reservation they accommodated us and served us like we were special. Sam was especially attentive. This used to be a hamburger restaurant and the vestiges of the original restaurant remain but there has been a significant upgrade to the seating and there is plenty of room for groups of 5 to 10. We are locals and came in for the first time since the change in name, menu, and interior design and decor. We chose to order a number of starters instead of having two entrees. The food was well prepared and delicious, from the focaccia to meatballs, tuna, kale and burratta salad, and steamed mussels. Mussels are often overcooked, but these were perfectly done, plump and tender. The bread that came with the mussels had the right amount of toasted char. The noise level was a bit high and we expect that's due to how the building is constructed. Definitely enjoyed the food and the service. read more

Good heavens this place is divine! We were so excited to try it and none of it disappointed! Hannah the hostess was accommodating and friendly and Sam our server was wonderful! The focaccia is divine, meatballs perfectly cooked and seasoned, Caesar salad was perfectly lightly dressed, and the casarecce was heavenly! Let's start with the service..they had 6 mature adults squished in a booth at the bar. At first I thought "oh no" the busy bartender on a busy Sat night is going to be our server. This will not go well. After 20 mins waiting while the rest of our party arrived we were given water. Then we were given a waiter who was helping her. He took our drink order and then it went South! 30 mins later our drink order was lost. When we finally received it one drink a Manhattan was shaken and served in a martini glass with ice! Appetizers were taken, 15 mins later our "sub server" told us they ran out of meatballs. What Italian restaurant runs out of meatballs? Because we were just having a horrible start they brought the apps and comp'd us Brussels sprouts. No big deal!! Just be truthful, show us good service and get you *sh88t together* Our meals came and I ordered the Campenelle pasta with chicken. The pasta was not as expected. Not Italian homemade. It tasted like it was made with Rice flour. The lemon evoo was faint as if the dish sat and absorbed the liquid. No taste of lemon. I added chicken which consisted of a chicken tender cut up. 2oz. No lemon flavor. No seasoning. I was hopeful the evening would have turned around but it was a nightmare from the beginning. I am sorry but this was a once and done! I'm embarrassed because I invited two couple to join us. Value-no, Service-no, food-no Espresso martini-yes I believe in feedback and the owner needs to read this. Zero stars!!! read more

Really looking forward to a great local Italian restaurant. We were impresssed that they were taking reservations to help the staff get accustomed to the newness. The good news: Seated promptly, given water and menus by our waitress. At some point during appetizers we were given breadsticks which were amazing. The bad: waitress didn't inform us that one of their very basic dishes (spag carbonara) was not available until we ordered; appetizers came out sporadically; drinks came out haphazardly after a long wait, including delivery of a dirty empty wine glass (there were 2 bartenders) Mac and cheese delivered lukewarm after exceedingly long wait for all meals (also, food runner does not speak- is that weird?); not offered parm with meals, but some was finally delivered after asking two people and it was doled out in small plastic containers. No follow up from our waitress but another floor staff member was exceeding helpful and we thank her!); There were only 3 items on dessert menu and we chose cookies which were just okay. Lastly the portions were small for the price. I always have enough leftovers for a second meal but the Spag Pom barely filled me up at over $20. So overall lots of timing and training issues, food is good albeit slightly over priced. We sincerely hope things improve as we want Scratch to succeed and will give Scratcha a try again in a few months. read more
