I would give the food 3 stars. I only had the soup and it was just ok. I had the frogmore seafood soup and it was lacking on any seafood and very sweet. Husband had their seafood shrimp pot. They were out of corn , so all it had was shrimp, sausage and potatoes. Service was excellent and the ambiance was super casual with both inside and outside dining. If it wasn't so hot, I'd pick to sit outside facing the marsh. read more

Came here on a Friday night and we were seated right away. There is outdoor dining with a beautiful view of the marshes, but we chose to stay inside. I ordered the mahi-mahi tacos and they accommodated me with gluten-free corn tortillas instead of the typical flour tortillas. The tacos were loaded with mahi-mahi and two tacos with plentiful. Restaurant was clean and staff was friendly and attentive. read more

From the moment you pull into The Foolish Frog on St. Helena Island, you're immersed in the Lowcountry. The oak trees draped in Spanish moss feel like a scene from another era, where time slows down just enough to let you breathe. This place is a true gem--unpretentious, scenic, and welcoming. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, with a dog-friendly attitude that's not just tolerated but celebrated. I didn't have my dog with me this time, but it was obvious the staff genuinely loves dogs. The sunset views from the balcony are nothing short of breathtaking--absolutely worth timing your visit around. Inside, the restaurant is open, clean, and filled with a warm energy. Booths and tables are thoughtfully spaced, and from the minute you walk in, the staff makes you feel like you belong. They're attentive, friendly, and genuinely happy to be there, which goes a long way in setting the tone. There's a full bar with a great selection, so whether you're in the mood for a cocktail, a cold beer, or a glass of wine, they've got you covered. And when it comes to food--this is where The Foolish Frog really shines. I had the seafood platter with shrimp, oysters, and flounder, all fried to absolute perfection. Crispy, flavorful, and not the least bit greasy. Every bite made it clear this place knows how to do seafood right. One standout item that absolutely deserves its own mention is the Coquilles Saint-Jacques. You rarely see this dish on menus anymore, and certainly not executed this well. Made with large, tender scallops and topped with freshly grated Parmesan, it was rich, elegant, and perfectly balanced. It's one of those dishes that lingers in your mind long after the meal is over. Everything here is scratch-made, from the sauces to the salad dressings, and you can taste the difference. The care and craft behind the food come through in every bite. The Foolish Frog isn't just a restaurant--it's an experience. Whether you're a local or just passing through, it's the kind of place that stays with you and keeps calling you back. read more

This is one of our favorite places to stop for lunch whenever we are in low country. The view is spectacular. Especially at sunset. The food is simply delicious. The fried green tomatoes are my favorite. They have delicious salads, and the chicken sandwich is so good. The service is fantastic. They are so kind and friendly. The staff was very friendly. The bartender was a truly nice lady. The food was very good.

Delicious food, excellent service. Drinks are a little expensive. Never had frog legs before, but I must say they're tender, and tasty.

I'm giving stars because my server was amazing. She was friendly and attentive. I ordered a Caesar salad with shrimp and that alone was $23. Never in a million years should 6 blackened shrimp added to a salad be a $12 add on. It's my fault for not reading the menu fully but, no reasonable person would expect a $23 salad. Add ons are normally $6-8 ad the most. My salad had way too much cheese and dressing on it so I struggled through that and even asked for more lettuce to try and even it out. It helped a little but, it was ruined for me once you drench it and the lettuce gets soggy. On the positive side, the Bloody Mary is the thing to get. It was really delicious and I might go back for that but, I would never do a salad there. Here is a photo of the receipt so you know, I'm not exaggerating. read more

Tourists don't do it!!! Now I know we're on southern time, but 40 minutes for a kids pb&j and frozen chicken fingers is even too long for that. Definitely have the name right. Foolishness! When the food did finally come out the gumbo was chunks of tomatoes with zero flavor. The croutons in the Caesar salad were soft they were so stale. Nothing was good but it filled our stomachs. We wanted to sit indoors but there was a massive leak in the ceiling taking up 2 tables with buckets and towels so we sat on the patio. Thanks for the forever family joke of suggesting foolish frog for dinner out. read more

The food was ABSOLUTELY delicious. The grouper cheeks special for the night was amazing, and so was the ribeye. Our waitress, Lydia, was probably one of the kindest and most helpful people I have met in a restaurant. Music choice was very nice, and the decoration looked spectacular when paired with the beautiful marsh next to the restaurant. 5/5 stars, would definitely recommend! read more

We have passed by this restaurant for over a year on our way to Hunting Island so today we decided to try it - Food we ordered: Salad with blackened Mahi, Shrimp Basket, Key Lime Pie, Pecan Pie and unsweetened tea Good stuff: 1. It's a cool vibe-- this is was the best part to me --very Beaufort beach/Marsh-- it does sit on marsh the outdoor seating is great- awesome view. Inside is cute and eclectic. Great to seat and have drink - hang out with friends. 2. Staff was great- 2nd best thing- they were friendly. Attentive- knowledgeable, quick 3. Shrimp was good- nice flavor to batter they use, unsweetened tea is good- they fresh brew it, key lime pie is good- it is more of a cake like consistency- nice tang, pecan was well pecan - --- Not so good: Well I order the garden salad and they brought me a different salad with blue cheese or goat cheese which I don't like - so this is personal taste thing I was brought a new one but they didn't give me a new bowl and just put regular lettuce on top of old stuff so the cheese I do no like was still mixed in- for me they should have remade salad fresh and put in new bowl- but the waitress was so sweet I just didn't want to say anything else. The blackened Mahi was over cooked and the seasoning was not to my taste so I will try something else next time The Key Lime pie was great!!! Cakey, nice line tang the crust was a gram cracker style --Extra stuff to know: 1. The parking is super tight so. There is different entrance then exit so watch for that so not to block traffic 2. It is on way to Hunting Island so it's a nice spot to stop I'd you are on way there or on way back. 3. Outdoor seating is facing the marsh - it gets packed out there fast. Our experience here was actually awful. The first disappointment was the HOUR wait to get appetizers after ordering. We watched tables get seated and leave before getting any food. All the manager had to say for this? "The kitchen is swamped." Maybe don't seat more people than you can reasonably handle. On to the quality of the food, also awful. You know it's bad when the best part of the night was fried okra. And $40 for mid crab cakes? Audacity. They're trying to be a quality of restaurant they can't reach. The cherry on top was two rude servers (not ours, though, whose name was Cindy and was the best part of our night). All that the manager offered after us presenting our complaints was 25% off just the appetizers, taking our bill down to a small amount of $390 for 5 people. read more

We were lucky enough to get to the Foolish Frog before they closed down for a week! We made reservations, this place is very popular so it is recommended. We were greeted by a very pleasant hostess who said it would just be a few minutes. She sent us over to the bar as we waited. We were seated before we had a chance to order a drink because we got sidetracked by some very friendly patrons which was the beauty of being in the lower country! We ordered a cocktail which was refreshing and so yummy! The Daufuskie Dog! We placed our order- I do not care for seafood so I ordered the steak with hollandaise and a side of horseradish mash. My sister ordered the Yum Yum Ya Ya with shrimp, crawfish and sausage. We did not try the frogs legs! Her dish was an appetizer but she ate is as a meal which was plenty. My steak was very good and the mashed potatoes did not have the horseradish that I was hoping for. I completed my meal with a flourless death by chocolate dessert that was so so good! I'm truly glad I experienced the Foolish Frog! I must add that the staff was constantly moving AND cleaning! Thank you for that! read more

I've been going to this restaurant for a long time, and like me... it's changed a lot over the years. I like that the owners have tried to make the menu more upscale, but I think they might be missing out on what the regulars want by not having a cheeseburger, and more southern-style comfort food items on the menu like they used to. Listen, a local place like this where you can relax is amazing, and I will always come back for the fried okra because it's seriously wonderful. read more

WOW, now isn't this yummy? Hands down the best shrimp taco I've ever had! It was very, very, very delicious. The tasted was in my mouth for the rest of the day. I 100% recommend the baja sour cream sauce. It was soooo good. The staff was very friendly and kind to us. Only downside is that shrimp was a little bit too salty (but I like salty food) and there's not that many options for food (I went for lunch). But if you sit outside, you get to eat by the swamp... Gave this place a second chance as it's been 4 years since I've been here. I was hoping for some improvement because last time I was here there was a long wait and they were understaffed but the food was still really good then so it was worth the hassle. Not anymore. They still had us wait forever, they still had "reservations" that didn't show up, they still claimed to be understaffed. However the food is no longer top tier despite being very very overpriced now. Most everything we ordered was just okay. My husband, always the unlucky orderer, had the seafood pasta which included whopping 3 small shrimp and 1 chopped up scallop for about $35ish (can't remember exactly) which is ridiculous. And it was also absolutely swimming in sauce. The only redeeming quality the whole night was our server who's name I believe was Mia or Mya, I think. She was a the shining light here that made the experience better. Anyway, I don't plan on ever returning here again. Done and done. read more

This was recommended by the owner of the place we rented. We actually went twice in two days. The first day we went for lunch and, as usual, I ordered too much food and we couldn't eat the rest of the day. The second visit was to get a Bloody Mary; someone ordered one the day prior and it looked so good that I couldn't stop thinking about it. It was better than I even expected. Every item we ordered was hot and tasty. The app with the grit cake, shrimp, sausage and crawfish was my favorite though! The fried flounder basket was perfect - the fish, hush puppies and fries were all three served hot!!! Yay! The service was wonderful, the view was nice, and the price was very fair. Our one and only complaint was the terrible station they had playing on XM radio. It was the worse of the worse sad sap bad songs. It was dreadful. If you insist on playing music, please play something that makes me not want to cry over my lunch. read more

Foolish Frog is an outdoor seating treasure. Many many many restaurants in the area don't offer it, because, well, who wants to sweat while they eat? However, at Foolish Frog, not only do they offer the outdoor seating, they offer it with razzle dazzle by covering it and blowing fans on you. The Al Fresco dining option definitely isn't an afterthought as it's wired with fans, lighting, and has a server station at the back wall. Way to welcome us! Cindy is another treasure -- an absolute doll. She was like a Aunty taking care of our group of five with her cute braids and calling us darling. She was attentive and thoughtful, often one step ahead of our requests. We were given the Sunday Brunch menu, where the Frogmore Stew (low country boil) wasn't displayed. Cindy asked the cook if they could accommodate the craving and they could! Three of those were ordered as well as the Gabby Crabby, St. Helena's Crab Cake Sandwich, Fried Calamari, VA Chargrilled Oysters, and Crawfish and Shrimp Yum Yum Ya Ya. Crawfish and Shrimp Yum Yum Ya Ya: just was the name implies... "ya ya it was yum yum!"Crawfish is one of those *lots of work for little reward* foods, so happy it was shelled. The dish was mighty tasty and worthy of being sopped up. While there was a bed of grits, a crusty bread would've been perfect for soaking up all the goodness the shrimp and crawfish were wading in. I didn't mean to keep it to myself, but by the time I realized I wasn't sharing, I wasn't caring either. VA Chargrilled Oysters: my first time having them and not my last. I've yet to retry the raw oyster experience, but am happy to report that chargrilled will always be an option. St. Helena's Crab Cake Sandwich: Cindy described it as mostly crab, little filler. She wasn't lying and it did not disappoint. The cake wasn't dry and tough, proving the ratio of crab was high. The key lime tarter sauce was delectable with just enough pucker to cut the mayo's creaminess; the two worked well with each other. Halfway through I ditched the toasted brioche buns and scraped out every last morsel of crab cake to eat it sans carbohydrates. Not sorry. Dirty Shirley: alcoholic beverage. For the first time I was asked if I preferred bourbon or vodka. While intriguing... I wasn't ready for the brown liquor and opted for Tito's. It was a heavy pour with a light grenadine splash, and spritz of lemon-lime soda. Eye opening then eye closing as I don't drink often and was ready for a nap. Wonderful establishment on St. Helena. Try it. You'll like it. read more

Made a reservation, upon arrival we were informed we didn't have a table and had to wait due to the staff "loosing our reservation" but then found it. Inconsistent quality and amount of time it takes to prepare your food. I was in St. Helena on a Gullah tour. We originally were to go to Gullah Grub across the street but they were unable to serve us and our tour guide suggested it. And I'm glad she did! I loved everything about the experience. The service was amazing (they had no problem servicing my large party if 12 unplanned) and the food was just what we wanted. We had several items including the fried green tomatoes, fried pickles, sautéed shrimp, fried calamari, chargrilled oysters, seafood platters. But the star of the menu is the Yum Yum Ya Ya. This is a MUST TRY! The grit cake with the Cajun spices, shrimp and crawfish were just so good. Best of all you can remove the sausage if you want. Should also note that the fried oysters were fried to perfection. read more

Good standard low country fare!! Nice view and good service. Glad I went and would go again.

The Foolish Frog. A totally "cute", "themed", and "touristy" spot. There's some highs and some lows. Let's do the highs first. Highs: - The view is top notch. Look at my picture from the deck outside. This is the best part. - Their seafood was fresh. I can't deny that. The shrimp weren't frozen and tasted like the ocean. - Servers are friendly. Lows: - The best one that sums this place up that many people have put. "Tourist Trap". - Expensive for small portions. - Hushpuppy game was weak. I really wanted to like the Foolish Frog more. The view got me, but at the end of the day, their menu and food could be in Anywhere Beach Town, USA. All the food was just good (not really good or great). Shrimp were fresh but on the smallish-medium size. Fries checked out (as long as they're hot they check out with me) and the worst part! Hushpuppies were very small. Almost insultingly small. Would I recommend The Foolish Frog? Maybe. I've had better and I've had worse. Finding a restaurant in St. Helena is pretty hard due to there being maybe 10? It's just the prices were pretty high for what I'd consider a "snack" size portion. It's honestly what I thought it'd be: a tourist trap...but the memory there will be nice thanks to the view. read more

Oh, what a delightful place to stop on our tour of the lowlands of South Carolina. We had driven through Hilton head, Bluffton, Beaufort and Hunting Island, St Helena Island, etc. before we stopped in to eat. The Sweet-tea that you all drink in South Carolina is so delicious you cannot find it like that in Arizona. I could have sat there all day drinking that sweet tea. My husband thought his Philly cheesesteak with au jus was really tasty. I had the shrimp tacos with spicy chipotle sauce or something. It to was very tasty. Mostly though, it was the Friendliest conversation of our hard working waitress and the explanations of the alligator sign by the parking lot, and the things she's seen in the marsh that showed us how kind she was, talking to us tourists like she'd known us forever. We loved that so thank you. read more
