This place reminds me a lot of No Name Pub in the Florida keys where we just moved from. It's a super secret hidden dive bar/bistro. It's dark, it's small, the roofs are low, and it's in a basement on the waterfront. Totally captures the dive bar vibe. The service was fantastic. You need to order at the bar and take a number to your table. Be patient if they are busy, they are doing their best. Wife got the grilled chicken Cesar wrap and I got a club sandwich. Both were wonderful. The grilled chicken was warm and full of flavor in every bite. The club was made to order and perfect. Their drinks are top notch too. Best Dive Bar!! There is an art to creating the whole Dive Bar experience. Enter here from the alley to the back basement, low ceiling with small cozy inside and spacious outside options. Dollars tacked to the ceiling beams, hand-lettered signs tacked up randomly and best of all a Great Bartender with an attitude. I had driven into town late on a Monday and was fortunate to find Hemingways and some very good whisky -- Maker's Mark hit the spot along with a bag of chips -- I'm easy. Bartender Zoe was straight up about some of the signs (see my photos), helpful about parking for the next 2 days, and can chat effortlessly with all of us. The dollars tacked everywhere were reminiscent of KeyWest and Memphis dive bars and the late hours fill a void. I look forward to returning. read more

OK something just doesn't fit. In an area of snazzy eateries, we found this cozy, basement bar. We wandered over and headed into this dark, funky bar that felt like a haunted basement. Kind of smelled that way too. The small space was filled with tons of character and dark kitch. Think Hansel & Gretle and the witch's cottage. We ordered drinks from the no nonsense bartender and sat outside. The lower level type location allows the patio to face a small parking lot and half wall. We joined a couple at the couch area and enjoyed our perfectly crafted cocktails . They were so much fun to chat with. They packed up and moved to the area from Rhode Island and love it. They are now regulars at Hemingway's. We only had cocktails but I did see people eating. It looked a delicious casual pub food. We were also told they sometimes have live music in the small parking lot. Who knows, I might check it out again the next time I'm in town. read more

Came here on the hunt for she crab soup. Read a number of reviews that they had a good one. Stopped in at lunch time and the place was a ghost town - just a waitress and a cook in the back. They did indeed have she crab on the menu and it was super expensive - $13 I think. We got a bowl and thought it was just ok - not great, but not bad. Am still on the hunt. read more

Took a Sunday drive up to Beaufort, SC from Savannah yesterday and happened upon this little gem on the waterfront. Felt like I was in Key West again. Had the most interesting (albeit not the spiciest or strongest) Bloody Mary that I've ever encountered. In addition to the usual garnishes, this one also came with pretzels, a chicken nugget (!), and a small donut (!). We visited Hemingways via sailboat while transversing the ICW because of bad weather. Fell in love with the place immediately, met the nicest people and a bartender that was destined to become the owner the next time around. The place serves the best clientele in a really cool city. It's not all glamour and ritz, but it's was a water front dive bar should be. So this is the quintessential hole in the wall, but it in a good way with plenty of sass and character. As soon as you walk in you can smell the history of this place, and feel the old vibes. It's not big, and the walls and ceilings are completely covered with stuff. It's fun to look around and read all the witty and funny signs. We parked ourselves at the bar as it was a chilly day and with the building not having the best insulation, this was the coziest place to hang. We had only been here for drinks, so were looking forward to sampling some of their small menu. Partner ordered the Reuben and I went with the French Dip. We have lived in the area for three years, and have tried a dozen or more beef sandwiches and none were worth repeating. Hemingway's knew how to give this sandwich respect. The meat wasn't hot, but it didn't matter as the au jus was, so with one dip it became a very warm and delicious bite. They weren't stingy with the meat, it was tender and medium rare. The bread so reminded me of the French loaves they use in New Orleans for all their po'boys. It had the perfect amount of crunch from the crust yet wasn't a tug fest with your teeth, and most importantly it didn't compete with the other ingredients nor did it collapse into a mess when wet. Partner's Reuben hit all the right notes as well, so both of our stomachs were happy. The side pickle tasted like the kind my uncle used to make from a very old family recipe. A solid deli style treat. This little place is known for being open until 2:00 am, which is a feat of great magnitude considering Beaufort is not known for its late night revelry. Kananni, our bartender/server, felt like an old friend. Down to earth, funny and personable. This place is special, and we look forward to coming back. read more

We have lived in Beaufort for three years and had not yet visited Hemmingway's Bistro. The Beaufort Gazette published a story about how some idiot had purchased a loft in the building above them and now wants to shut them down because of the bar noise. We went into to town to sign their petition and to have lunch. Boy am I glad we did. It was Nat'l Margarita Day and they had a Muffuletta on the special of the day board! They treated us like we were old friends and the food and drinks were great! Note: If you want to eat from their menu, get there between 11 and 3, The kitchen closes sharply at 3 PM. read more

My first visit to Beaufort and so glad I ended up here during my visit! The atmosphere is great and comfortable, like I was visiting an old friend. I expected typical bar food but was surprised with how good the food was. Drinks were great and people there were so awesome and entertaining with their travel stories. I cannot recommend this place enough and will definitely was making a trip back to Beaufort just to visit Hemingway's.
