Scratch has an appropriate name: all the baked goods are indeed made from scratch, including wedding cakes, and you can taste it. Scratch catered my wedding. We had cake and gluten-free/vegan cupcakes for just family after our ceremony and dinner, and cookies in the evening during a cocktail hour and dance party reception. Everything was delicious. The cake was a lemon-ginger cake with lemon curd filling and vanilla-basil frosting. It was beautiful, light, delicious, not too sweet, and very moist. The cupcakes were pistachio chocolate with vanilla pistachio frosting (vegan, gluten-free). The cookies were a wide variety, including some gluten-free/vegan options. I ordered from here from out of town. They had good reviews and I was looking for something to send my dad's sweet tooth for his birthday. They delivered a dozen assorted cupcakes to his house. During this social distancing time, they rang the bell and left them at his door. Though I didn't see it taste them myself, I can say that my dad was very happy w them. I had been waiting to try Scratch for a while, because when it comes to sweets, I do not discriminate and the bulk section at Wegmans suits me fine. But when Small Business Saturday rolled around, I put them at the top of my list for a custom vegan cake for my boyfriend, who is vegan and for whom I have not yet mastered the art of vegan baking (one day, but today is not that day and could someone please pass the butter). Cake-wise, it was OUTRAGEOUS. I got a little 'smash size' chocolate cake with bourbon cream filling and a caramel tidal wave or something that drips down the sides of the cake and is great for scooping off the little paper cake stand and eating by itself. It was spot on. I could seriously not tell the difference between this and a cake filled with animal products. I brought the flavor list home and presented him with both the cake and the list, and we started brainstorming our next order. Thank you, Scratch - you have saved me from ruining his birthday cake next year :) Customer service was good. It seemed to be kind of an off day - only one person working the counter (at their own, very mellow pace) on what seemed to be a big day, but it's a bakery on Park Ave, and if you're trying to get-in-get-out, you're doing it wrong. The woman who helped me create my cake was kind and suggested the caramel goodness vs. frosting the whole thing (and was very patient when my indecisiveness took over). I can't even give this bake shop 1 star. The staff was courteous but that would be the only thing about this place that was good. I ordered a cake for my daughters 18th birthday, I had to pick the cake up 2 days before her party due to their hours versus my work schedule. I cut the cake 2 days later, I expected the cake may be a little dry BUT the cake was Disgusting, it was so bad no one ate it. The owner said it was my fault for not serving it right away. I asked for half my money back she refused only wanted to give me a gift certificate. There is no way any cake should taste like that even if it wasn't eaten right away. It tasted like the cake was frozen a long time ago, it even looked old. Older then 3 days how could a cake taste so bad how is it that I took to long to serve the cake is the reason it was not edible?? NEVER again read more

Love the new space and location. The cookies (regular and GF) are my faves. The macarons are "ok" and unfortunately crumble easily and I prefer Sweet Sammie Janes, theirs are more favorable to the iconic french sweets (I've had macarons in France). The cupcakes are also "ok". Not the best and not terrible but not my first pick. Their cakes however are delicious though and I'm glad they now serve by the slice. Oh I can't rave enough about this place. I go every Sunday to get a slice of cake and a few baked goods. I love that they have traditional, gluten free and vegan options. The vast variety of cakes, cupcakes, macaroons, muffins and donuts change each week allowing me to try something new each week. Rochester's newest and best independent bakery! The ladies of Scratch Bakeshop catered desserts for a Christmas work party, and it was FANTASTIC. They brought macarons (the house specialty), cake bites, mini pies, and several kinds of cookies, and without exception they were all gone in the first 20 minutes - and everyone was asking for more. Best of all, their gluten-free desserts meant that everyone at the party could enjoy some sweet treats without being left out of the festivities. The whole experience was great. They were professional, friendly, and reasonably priced. If you want to support an awesome local business, Scratch Bakeshop should be your first choice. I can't wait to use them again! read more

Was so disappointed with the service I left without buying any thing, so I can't speak to the quality of the food, but I walked in and the girls just looked at me and then returned to their work. First time there will be my last. I went in on a Wednesday to order a small (simple) cake to be picked up on Sunday. When I walked in, there was one girl who was helping another customer order a cake, and about 10 others coming in and out of the back or hanging out behind the counter who's job it (apparently wasn't) to help customers. After waiting about 15 minutes, during which time I heard a phone conversation with a prospective customer needing the same thing I did, and the girl responded "we normally need a week, but it's small so that's perfectly fine!" and continued to take their order. After about 5 minutes, that same girl came to help me. I said I needed to order a small cake for my parents anniversary on Sunday and she promptly told me that I'm not able to do that because they need a weeks notice. - does calling in / being a special person get preferential treatment here??? She then told me that I can get one of the four cakes they make every day and have them write on it. (These cakes are the right size, but none of the ones displayed were appealing at the time.) I asked what flavor a would be available that day and she said "it's whatever we feel/we have no plan" and refused to let me make a request even then. I will never return. They may have the best desserts, but I will never know because their customer service is so rotten. read more

We had been in a few months ago and found that the cakes looked good and had a decent flavor on the icing but the consistency of cake itself was dry, dense and flavorless. This may sound crazy, but, I don't like cake. I would prefer cheesecake, an ice cream cake or a cookie cake... but this place changed the game for me. I LOVE their cake. Not only do they look beautiful, but they taste DELICIOUS. The frosting to cake ratio is so different from any other bakery I have visited. You would think the cake would taste overly sweet with the amount of frosting on it, but it doesn't. Now, I am a macaron kind-of-girl, and they are also delicious from here. I will admit my mouth did turn an electric blue after indulging in one, but it was worth it. My niece can't eat wheat, so she ordered a few gluten-free cookies and since they were gone in a minute, I am guessing she enjoyed them as well. The only thing I would suggest is having labels on the items in the case. Luckily when we went we were the only customers, but I can see that being a bit of an issue when they are busy. Now, I stop by some mornings on my way to work and surprise the family (now 2 kids + wifey) when I get home. They did our wedding cake, and we have them do all of our birthday cakes as well. I have to eat gluten free and I LOVE scratch for that reason! I usually hate it when bakeries combine gluten free with vegan baking, but for scratch, they make it work! Their cupcakes are to die for! Only some baked goods are both, and they usually have just gluten free items available, as well as just vegan. They also have regular items that are neither! My only request is that they finally start making gluten free COOKIES! I want a good chocolate chip cookie now that Ellie's is closed! read more

Scratch was a delight to work with for our wedding desserts. They're super flexible with flavors, what kinds of desserts you want, decor, etc. We ended up getting one tiered cake, two other small cakes in different flavors, and several dozen donuts. Their vegan and gluten free options are also a life-saver when dealing with a large group of people with different dietary restrictions/allergies. From first meeting through the entire process, the ladies of Scratch were pleasant, flexible, and so helpful all around. I have been a fan of scratch bakeshop for years. I have seen their beautiful cakes on instagram and my friend has gotten one for me for my birthday and it was beautiful and delicious. So when my best friends 30th birthdays were coming up I knew I had to get my cakes from there. But here is where the story changes. I am from out of town and prior to getting the cakes I had emailed back and forth and discussed in detail over the phone both cakes, one was with flowers from Stacy K floral. Everything was in clear detail, along with photos of previous cakes I liked, in the email. I also discussed how the party is in Buffalo and I'm coming from out of town and I need to be in Buffalo early morning on Saturday. They said no problem, you can pick up right at 8am. So 8am on the dot I'm there and they have one of the cakes ready but the other is not ready because it has flowers on it and the flower shop does not open until 9am. I have to be in buffalo by 9:30am for birthday events scheduled. The employees instruct me that I can wait around until 9am to then pick up the cake. I tell them that I have to be in buffalo at 9:30am so I cannot stay around for another hour to wait for this cake to be prepared when it should have been ready for 8am pick up. They then replied that I did not specify this on my order ... how was I to know that the flower shop opens later than the cake shop? Was I supposed to ask this or find this out on my own? Wouldn't a normal person assume that if you can pick up a cake at 8am that means any cake- whether it has sprinkles or flowers? So then I ask my friend who's having the party to drive out later than day between previously scheduled events to drive 70 miles each way to pick up the cake so the birthday isn't ruined. 1+ hrs in each direction to get a cake because this store can't figure out timing. I finally I get the cake. After so many emails and pictures and phone calls back and forth I thought for sure the cake would be perfect. I asked for wine / burgundy and gold streaks - it was covered with gold and pink/brown color. Not streaks and not the right color. I asked for flowers. And sent photos of many cakes with flowers. The flowers all gently accent the cake in the photos. My cake is 6in and they put 4 - 4in flowers to cover the cake! And flowers hanging down on the side that looked like limp dead flowers. It looked like someone wasn't even looking and slapped on some huge flowers to cover an ugly cake. The flower shop is right next door - how was cake size and color not coordinated with them? I'm not sure what happened here because I sent over several pictures of cakes that they have done in the past that I found very lovely yet this cake did not resemble anything like those cakes. As for the taste of the cake - I ordered a salted caramel and bourbon cake - which people loved the taste but almost everyone commented that they could not actually taste the bourbon in the cake. After all of this, I sent the bakery an email discussing my frustration and of course, no response. So I recommend that you proceed with caution. This bakery looks beautiful on instagram but in reality if you have an event that you need a cake for or want it for a special occasion they will not live up to their own hype. My friend the night before had ordered an apple spice cake with vanilla frosting only to get a vanilla cake with vanilla frosting. Some clear mismanagement is going on at the bakery. read more

I love Macarons and this was my first stop of my "Rochester Macaron Tour". Pros: Adorable little shop with a friendly staff. Nice flavor selection for macarons. I loved the flavor of the French toast and whiskey cider.I also tried the vegan chocolate chip cookies which I was surprised I like since I don't eat vegan normally. Great new addition to the Park Ave neighborhood! Cons: Although I liked the macaron flavors the cookies seemed a little under baked. Some were a little dry and some were chewy. They also seemed a little large for a macaron. I wish they offered a little more of a selection. They didn't carry that many baked goods. My husband is from the greater Rochester area so we come to town often. I had discovered Scratch on instagram and instantly fell in love. I love all things cake and these guys take it to a whole new level. I'm obsessed with their buttercream flowers in non-traditional hues. A few weeks ago, I finally got to try Scratch for myself. Unfortunately, due to our timing, we had to go to Glen Edith coffee shop to get our Scratch fix, but the cupcake I had was nonetheless the best cupcake I've ever eaten. It was a dark chocolate, almost oreo like cake with white buttercream frosting and the prettiest deep purple piped flower. We were so impressed that we made it a point to visit the bakery before we headed home and purchased a dozen cupcakes to take home, which was a little pricey (~$40), but totally worth it. read more

Cakes are very dry. They were supposed to have cupcakes ready for pickup on a Friday at 1pm (this was confirmed by email and again in person) but they "forgot" and had to make them- delaying my families arrival to my rehearsal dinner. They told my family who picked up the cupcakes that they would contact me for a partial refund and I never heard from them. They are overpriced and overly confident. Since I moved back to Rochester, NY from San Francisco, CA, the food kingdom of the U.S., I have been sorely disappointed in almost every food experience that I have tried. Then I stumble across this gem on Park Ave that can easily be missed when you drive on by, as it is a tiny place from the outside. But don't let the size fool you, the desserts that this bakery makes are superb and the manager, Caroline, couldn't be a better person to run a unique and delicious place like this. I tried a cupcake before ordering a full sized custom cake. The cupcake was moist, flavorful, and had a nice complimentary frosting that was just the right texture and level of sweetness. The cake was even better; easily the best German Chocolate cake that I, and everyone that was lucky enough to get a taste of it, had eaten. I also bought a friend a gluten-free cupcake and they were quite impressed as well. As the name implies, the bakery items are made from scratch, and the difference is quite obvious. I have tried some of the other so-called "good" bakeries in Rochester and have not been impressed by them at all. So if you are not so easily satisfied, and if you are looking for a high quality dessert item for yourself or an event, I would highly recommend this fantastic bakery. read more

Talk about exceeding expectations!! I have loved these ladies and their concept since I heard about their kickstarter campaign! Their tasty and artfully decorated products are out of this world and their passion for what they offer is evident within the first 5 minutes of meeting them. I was referred to them through a mutual acquaintance when I was planning a sizable family event in the summer of 2014. I knew I was going to have to accommodate various dietary wishes (gluten free, dairy free, vegan...) and thought I'd give them a try. I was treated to samples and shown enough options to cover the unique needs of all my guests. I was so surprised at how good non-traditional baked goods could actually taste! Everything sells out fast, so I recommend you hitting this place up on your lunch break, at the latest. Based on the rave reviews, I figured it was about time to give Scratch a try. We stopped in on a Wednesday afternoon and got two cupcakes and a vegan chocolate chip cookie. The peanut butter cupcake was very dry and dense. The cookies and cream one was better, but still not wonderful. The shop is very small and one employee was using the one table in the store front to get work done. The vegan chocolate chip cookie looked better than it tasted but it was okay. I am not vegan, but I respect that they have so many options catering to different needs. I guess I would give them another try, but maybe give something else a shot. read more
