Mommy & I took the trek to Scratch Bakeshop one Saturday morning in early January. The bakeshop's decor is super cute with little samples everywhere and fun music piping through the speakers. We waited on line for our turn. I was asked what my preference was. Gluten free? Vegan? Both? I said I was looking for some gluten free goodies but they didn't have to be vegan. I was referred to a large shelf with tons of tasty treats. Cupcakes, large slices of cake, macaroons, and NY Bills shaped cookies. I picked out a gluten free cupcake for myself and one for mom. I had the orange cranberry cupcake and mom got strawberry champagne. My cupcake was a little dry, which I have found to be typical of gluten free batters. The frosting made up for it. The orange cranberry flavors blended together perfectly. Mom's cupcake tasted like it had champagne in the cake itself, not necessarily just in the frosting. We love coming here for donuts on Saturdays. This is not the only thing we love about Scratch. They have a large assortment of delicious baked goods such as macarons, cookies, cake pops, and even their own garbage plate inspired desert plate, called a scratch plate! I love donuts so my friend brought us here when my husband and I were visiting her. We tried the Chai and Lemon Cookie Donuts. They call them donuts, but I'd call them cronuts according to what other places call this style donut. Both were great, but the lemon cookie one was hands down my favorite. Doughnuts, macarons, sugar cookies...what else could you want?! I went to a tasting with my sister for her wedding, and was impressed that they can mix and combine so many flavors in one cake. As they are the most popular bakery in town, you will pay a pretty penny for your wedding cake - no doubt. But, with that, you also get the peace of mind that they do this every single weekend and know how to keep things delicious and delivered on time. They've moved their operation since then to Russell St, and this location is awesome. I've never been upstairs but the downstairs area includes a few chair, swag, and the case! I'm sorry, but I was not a fan. I came here on a Saturday, and there was one person in front of me. Someone asked me right away if I needed help, and I said I wasn't sure what I wanted, so I just looked for a little bit. I got a few cupcakes, and I specifically asked if they had chocolate on chocolate, and she told me no. They only had one chocolate one, and it had cinnamon frosting, so I didn't want that one, so I picked 3 and went to cash out. As the girl was cashing me out, a different girl came from the back with a whole bunch of cupcakes to put on the shelf. And there was chocolate on chocolate! There was also what looked like chocolate peanut butter, which also would have worked. They were not busy, and I specifically asked for a certain kind of cupcake. Why not at least ask if they had what I wanted? And it was literally 2 minutes later that this person put them on the shelf. She had already boxed up the other 3 I had picked, so I didn't have them switch them, but that really irritated me. Now on to the cupcakes. I tried some of all 3. I had gotten a vanilla cupcake with chocolate almond frosting. It was awful! The cupcake tasted like a muffin, which is my biggest pet peeve, and the frosting had a horrible alcohol taste. It was just awful. I'd rate that one with a 1. The second one, at least I was told, was a vanilla cupcake with champagne frosting. This is the one I bought for myself, and I was really excited about it. I love champagne frosting. Well, this tasted nothing like it. It tasted citrus-y, like lemon or orange. which by the way, I do not like. And the cupcake again tasted like a muffin. This one was also awful. Not quite as bad as the first one, but also not what I was told it was, so I will rate it with a 2. The caramel one was actually fantastic! The cake part tasted like a vanilla cupcake (imagine that!) and the frosting was wonderful. It was sweet, and actually tasted like caramel, and was just a great cupcake. I'd give that one a 5. So, I'm not sure what is going on that 2 of the cupcakes were awful and one was great. They have signs saying that they are gluten free, vegetarian, etc, but I don't know which is which. I am vegetarian, so that really wouldn't affect the taste to me, and I've also had gluten free before and they tasted fine. I don't know which was which, but like I said, 2 of these were awful. And they really need signs on the shelves showing the flavors. I'm pretty sure the "champagne" cupcake was not champagne at all. We ordered a special occasion cake from Scratch a few weeks back and it was the perfect accompaniment to a special day. I've been hooked on their Instagram for a while now and am always excited when I find adorable Scratch cutout cookies at parties and events. Ordering was easy and done mostly over email. We stopped in first for a few cupcakes to get a sense for what flavors we liked best, there are a lot of flavors to pick from in both cake and frosting. We went traditional with a layered vanilla and chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream between layers and vanilla buttercream on the outside. I found a perfect inspiration cake on their Instagram and ordered something really similar. The cake was topped with three beautiful roses from Stacy K. This cake was the perfect complement to our special day. It was absolutely beautiful and flavorful and even stood up to a night in the fridge as we were traveling before we ate it. Note: I've sampled only their vegan items, so I can't speak to the non-vegan baked goods. Pros: The vegan chocolate chip cookies are truly excellent, among the best I've tasted. Cons: The other vegan baked goods are average, at best. There are some issues with customer service. First off, whether you are vegan or not, please try the vegan chocolate chip cookies. They are amazingly good. The vegan donuts, on the other hand, are too chewy and don't have much flavor. The vegan cupcakes are a bit dry and plain. The last time I was at the bakery, I witnessed an instance of poor customer service. I was waiting to pay, and two women ahead of me had apparently come in to pick up a custom-made cake that they had ordered. I think that they were a mother and daughter. The clerk (a young woman) went to the back to get the cake. But she quickly returned and informed the customers that their cake had accidentally been sold to someone else. The clerk delivered the news in a very casual, matter-of-fact way. She didn't apologize for the mistake, and she didn't express any sympathy or contrition. I felt really bad for the customers. The clerk did tell the women that she could give them an equally-valued amount of pre-made baked goods. To my mind, that is a wholly inadequate response. I used to own a retail outlet myself, and I would have refunded their money AND comped them the baked goods (and, of course, I would have apologized profusely for the mix-up). I mean, sure, mistakes happen no matter how careful you are. But when they happen, you have to make it right with the customer. The two women were polite and reacted much more calmly than I would have, but I'm guessing that they came away disappointed and frustrated. This is no way to run a business. read more

She even confirmed the order and the owner said of course we have it. The day of the party my brother in law went to pick it up. The cake that my mom wanted so bad. The owner called two days after and didn't have the courtesy to call the day of to apologize. They only offered a refund and not a way to fix the issue. They wanted us to pay for another cake. Visited from out of state for a mini moon as we just got married Friday! We were super excited about this spot. Unfortunately the service didn't match the quality! Loved the baked goods, the chocolate chip cookie was the best we'd ever had. But the staff wasn't polite at ALL. When we walked in we weren't greeted, when we asked questions about things it was a short response. The new space is the perfect upgrade for the Scratch ladies! It's in a wonderful location on Russell St right by Nosh and Stacy K Floral. Although, I'll hold their Park Ave location in my heart forever. It was such a great spot to start, and now, they have more space, gorgeous interior, and more room for all the baking. They offer cake by the slice now and their peanut butter cookies are too good to not devour in the car ride home (saying from experience). I've always been a fan of their macarons and cupcakes and love the variety of flavors and options from gluten free to vegan and, of course the regular flavs too. They are pricier when it comes to cake design, but their quality is worth it. The designs are extravagant so let them get creative, you would be amazed with what they can do (see all the photos for inspo). They do everything from weddings to bridal showers and all your party needs -- a go-to for me for birthday cakes and cupcakes (they need a week's notice). My first trip to Scratch's new location on Russell St was last week and it was GLORIOUS. I was a little sad to see them move from Park Ave, but the new location is AMAZING. The building is spacious, clearly custom designed, and the food, as ever, is amazing. Bae surprised me with a trip here on a Saturday and it was buzzing. A good line of people and parking is slightly easier than the last location - even if I can so see myself walking here once it gets warmer. The biggest addition to this location compared to the last is the ability to feel like I can stay and enjoy my sweets! Plus, having drink options of local ciders and milk and a custom blend of coffee just puts the frosting on top of the cake. I loved Scratch's old location but its new one is even better! read more

Love Scratch and have been meaning to write this review for a while. I would say I am mostly a huge fan of their 'scratch plates' - their dessert-version of a garbage plate, made with cake scraps, jams, frosting, drizzles and sweet accents. Each week they offer numerous flavors AND they have vegan and gluten free!! And their gluten free is delicious, moist, and cakey, not gritty and dry like many gluten free cakes. Since getting my husband equally addicted, we have been going each week and getting at least one scratch plate ($9), sometimes two. So far we've had one with lemon cake, lemon curd and raspberry jam; one with mocha cake and mocha frosting with chocolate drizzle and chocolate-covered coffee beans; one with chocolate brownie bits, peanut butter frosting and raspberry jam; one 'banana split' with vanilla cake, banana and chocolate frosting, chocolate drizzle, sprinkles and a cherry; one that was dark chocolate cake, dark and light chocolate frosting and chocolate drizzle; and one with chocolate cake, mocha frosting and chocolate shavings. All of them scrumptious! (They typically last us about 4 days...while we could easily polish them off in a single sitting, we love taking a fork or two as our dessert, thereby stretching out the plate and giving us a sweet treat to look forward to after each dinner!!) I have also had their macarons (a but too crumbly for my taste), their frosted sugar cookies (gluten free and vegan), cupcakes, and actual full sized cake at the birthday party of a friend. Their skills with balancing flavors and sweetness, flavor combos, and their artistic frosting decorations are the best in town. I am so excited that my birthday cake will be coming from them this year too! Couple things to note: While they do have a retail bakery open to the public, right now during the 'NY On Pause' coronavirus situation, they are only fulfilling orders for pickup. The interior space is cute and you can sit at the table inside and eat your treat; if you are looking for a small event space for a party they also rent their upstairs. They also have coffee, but it's not fresh brewed. If you want to order a cake, the entire process is done online - they will answer their phone, but you will be redirected to the website. And it really works - you just have to hunker down for the back and forth! On the website you can get every minute detail and option for everything you could order in a cake: cake flavors, frosting flavors, cake fillings, decoration options, sizes, gluten free and vegan options, cupcakes, extra decorations like letters snd symbols, etc. And if you take a look and start to add things up and think, dang, this is kind of expensive for a cake....let me assure you it is worth every penny, and is guaranteed not only to be delicious but to also be one of the most beautiful cakes you ever saw! My reason for 4 out of 5 stars is that all of the folks I've interacted with in the store when cashing out have not been very friendly or helpful; they usually seem a little put out, are not patient to answer questions, and on one occasion told me something was not available even though I had called ahead to ensure it was, and thankfully someone from the back heard me and helped me. I know it can be a challenge to find folks who just cash out the customers, but if I could make a recommendation, it would at least be to offer some customer service training or mentoring, since these folks do represent the business. But, then again, as a gluten free person, I'm willing to bear a little rudeness to get my fix! read more

My boyfriend ordered a custom cake at Scratch to celebrate my birthday because they were able to accommodate all of my diet restrictions. The bakery though did so much more than accommodate, they made a delicious treat that I was able to enjoy without the feeling awful afterwards! And even more amazing is the awesome decorations! My cake was gluten free and also dairy free. I don't like eating fondant so the coating was all buttercream and my bf requested lilies as the top decoration because they are my favorite flowers. The buttercream was layered on with an ombre design which I adored. The cake itself was vanilla with raspberry buttercream and lemon curd between the layers. The vanilla cake sponge was moist and by itself, you do notice that it is an alternative flower (but still tasted good!). The raspberry buttercream was rich and a little tangy, but the real flavor that cuts through the rich buttercream was the lemon curd. We loved this part of the cake most. The curd was thicker than we expected, more like a jam, and it had such a tart flavor that complemented the rest of the cake super well. The outer layer of buttercream was thick so they didn't skimp for sure! When you combine all of the elements of the cake, you honestly will not know that there are substitutions. We were very delighted with this cake and will definitely be ordering more in the future as we both have food intolerances! Very excited to taste more treats! read more

So. Amazing. Do I need to say more? I guess I do since this is a Yelp review! I don't recall how I stumbled upon this little bakery but I was so so happy I did. I believe I was looking for super awesome bakery for my wedding and this was it. Unfortunately, they don't deliver to where I would get married, or too expensive for me to get it delivered really! Their Instagram game is amazing and it's what drew my attention initially. I bought a couple things when I first visited. The sprinkled brownies were the perfect decadent of sweet and sprinkled. They have different flavors of French macrons so it's always changing, they're all delicious. I wish I could try their donuts but I never see them when I visit. I ordered a custom rudolph cake for a friends birthday and it was the cutest thing ever. I ordered a smash cake because we only wanted a small one. It was adorable and it tasted amazing. Even in its small form, it has four layers of moist chocolate cake. I would order custom cakes here more often if I lived closer. I knew from the moment we started planning our wedding that I wanted our desserts and wedding cake to come from Scratch Bakeshop. I frequent their bakery often and love the HUGE vegan selection that they offer ! We had a vision of an all vegan dessert display for our wedding and I knew they'd be the one we'd go with. We set up our tasting early on a Sunday morning with Molly. She was such a pleasure to work with during our entire dessert planning process. We had the idea for a vegan mini dessert bar with cookies, mini cheesecakes, cake truffles, doughnuts and of course, our little cutting cake. Molly really helped us nail the right flavors for everything. We also decided to save a bit of money and have our desserts picked up instead of having Scratch drop them off at our venue. This worked out well for us because we didn't need them set up till later in the day (we had a split wedding day). On the morning of our wedding, a few of our friends went to scoop them up.
