I like Scratch's willingness to cater to the dietary needs of our ever-changing community. I am not a vegan, GF person, but I am still down with the effort. Recently Ugly Duck has added some coffee to the place, and it really helped bring a little something special to their one year anniversary event. The vegan donut holes were actually amazing. They also had a photo booth, and beer growlers to sample from Lost Brewing Co. I have tasted their cakes, macaroons, and other sweets, and I am a fan of the macaroons. The texture and consistency is wonderful. The cupcakes that I have tried so far are okay. The frosting to cake ratio is a little too much for me, and I prefer more of a ganache taste in the middle. I think the women that work here have been extremely professional, right down to packaging up orders to go. I am happy for their addition to the Park Ave scene. read more

After hearing so much about this place from others, I finally got to try some of their desserts on the opening day. I can tell you with confidence that the Macarons are by far the very best I have ever had. I got salted caramel, vanilla and chocolate and OMG!!! They are so airy, fluffy and luscious!!! The salted caramel was simply beyond this world, so was the chocolate. The owners were doing an interview when I got there and I heard them saying that they previously worked at "village bakery". The macarons, in my opinion are better than village bakery, so good job girls There were some treats in the store too, truffles; normal vegan and gluten-free. I did not care for them. Not good at all. So I am giving them four stars because even though the macarons were so good, I was a little disappointed by the truffles. I was not super impressed with my visit. I tried the lemon pistachio and coconut caramel macaroons and they were kind of stale tasting. The flavors were good, but the bottoms of each of the cookies were very thick and chewy unlike any macaroon that I've had before. I also tried the white chocolate macadamia scone which was good, but it did not knock my socks off. Maybe I just had high expectations after all of the reviews that I've read and the photos I've seen on Instagram? It's a small shop, but very cute! The customer service was good and I will be back to try their cake or other goodies and hopefully add another star! I really want to love this place! :) read more

Outstanding! From customer service to the quality of yums they should teach others how to do things right. Came in for my first time to have a cake and cake balls made for my son's birthday who loves space. Gave them my idea and they brought it to life. Really impressed. I am probably going to get death threats over this review. Short and simple...the macarons offered today were stale and hard to chew (all 3 flavors ordered). Completely missed that buttery smooth bite that melts in your mouth. But the silver lining is that the filling was light and whipped to perfection. My coworker was nice enough to share the cupcake I bought him for his birthday which was a rich dark chocolate with cookie dough frosting and topped with cookie crumbs. The cake was very moist and dark. The frosting was super rich, but he thought it complimented the cake perfectly. Maybe the macarons are leftovers or perhaps someone forgot to slide the window back closed. But I can not get over my disappointment and how bad my first macarons from Scratch Bakeshop were. Even my coworkers that never had them thought them terrible. If this was a hiccup, and I believe in my heart that it was, please take measures to prevent it in the future. I ordered two cakes from them for my kid's birthdays. One was fresh and after it came to room temperature tasted good. The cakes were picked up for what they knew was a same day event and they were practically frozen. The paper boxes they came in became moist as they thawed. The other was made from old cake that had obviously been thawed. It had hard pieces in the bites at the top of the cake and there was a strange after taste. My son didn't like his birthday cake unfortunately. One message was written correctly the other was not. I truly wanted to believe all the reviews but this place was not for us. Such a cute little shop! We stopped in to pick up something sweet. We were excited to see they had vegan options since we try to avoid dairy. We bought 3 cupcakes that were dairy and gluten free. The cupcake was ok and what I would expect from gluten free. I prefer vanilla but they only had chocolate. The frosting on all of them was amazing. We got the peach champagne, mocha, and raspberry coconut. We also bought a couple of dairy free chocolate chip cookies which were delicious and a couple of sugar cookies. The sugar cookies were beautiful but I didn't love the taste. Overall I would recommend this gem if you can't have dairy or gluten. I would stop in again the next time we are in town. read more

My daughter bought a birthday cake for her 2 year old. I picked up the cake and we served it. Yes it was beautiful but the WORST cake I have ever had. It was very expensive 66.00. But my daughter heard the cakes where good. Well they are NOT! I called the store and spoke to manager and the service is horrible. She said we had 24 hours to bring back the cake so they can decided if something is wrong with the cake or if it is just because we did not like it. So agin it would be their call. Well first of all who does not like cake. Their were 15 of us and no one could even finish eating a piece. Pros: - The customer service was very good - We did most of our communication via email - I was able to pay over the phone - They worked within my budget - The cake was GORGEOUS Cons: - The cake did not taste as good as it looked (which was ok with me because I wanted a pretty cake more than a tasty one) - The cake-to-frosting ratio was WAY off. I love frosting but the strips of frosting between the cake were thicker than the cake! - They offered a banana flavored cake and I expected to get white cake with banana flavoring, but instead, it was banana bread layered in a cake. - The banana bread was kind of hard. It was not moist and light like I expected my birthday cake to be. - Since I got an expensive pretty cake that didn't taste great from here, I ended up also getting myself a cheap ugly cake from Wegman's that tasted amazing just to hit my craving for cake. read more

I have always been a fan of Scratch bakeshop cakes and cookies and we have been loyal customers. Recently, they took orders for Easter and one option was a Raspberry babka. The order needed to be picked up on Saturday prior to Easter. The babka was served to guests at a brunch on Sunday and was already completely dry, though it had been secure in the bakery box it came in. Even warming it couldn't revive it. I am reviewing because I contacted the bakery to share my disappointment and no one has gotten back to me. As small business owners ourselves, we recognize the value of quality as well as communication. Love the look of this bakery. Very clean and bright. Looks like it stepped out of the pages of Pinterest. The pastries are also decorated beautifully. I just wish they tasted as good as they looked. I also wish that their pastries were labeled as to what they are. "Traditional Cookie" "Vegan Cookie" "Gluten Free Cookie" - that's all great but really not too descriptive. Or just "Traditional Muffin". --um ya--is is so difficult to say what kind it is? Raspberry, blueberry, multigrain?? I LOVEE coming here, I recommend this place to people all the time! These ladies work their butts off and do an amazing job. Scratch offers GF and vegan options which is great for people with allergies etc. The inside is so quaint, and bright. There is a small amount of seating, two cases full of treats and merchandise to buy. They are always posting on Instagram, so if you have it check out their page for daily goodies they are serving! Whenever I go in, whoever is working is always helpful when I have questions on their treats! Today I went with their newest popular item, which is a dessert plate it's a huge portion with layers of cake, cookie crumble, a ganache and a drizzle of goodness. These are limited so if you're going for one, definitely get there early. Parking you can find out front, on the side or in the parking lot up the street to the left. This is a great location surrounded by other local businesses/restaurants. So lucky to live close by to a bakery that makes delicious vegan/gf treats that won't upset my tummy. We ordered a naked vegan maple on maple wedding cake and a non-vegan bourbon groom's cake for our recent wedding in Canandaigua, NY and our guests are STILL raving about them! The cakes looked just beautiful and were incredible! Our wedding cake was the best tasting cake I've ever had! We had planned to have extra cake leftover but so many people went up for 2nds and 3rds (myself included) that it was all gone by the end of the night! Called at 2:15 on a Sunday afternoon to order a last minute birthday cake for my mother-in-law, woman i spoke with (rebecca?) was patient and professional as I asked her about available flavors and prices etc.. We picked up the cake just before closing and staff was just wonderful all around. And the very best part of it all is that the cake was probably the best cake I have ever eaten. Honestly the first word that comes to mind when I think of Scratch is HEAVEN. I'm convinced their stuff is made from nectar and ambrosia because absolutely everything is amazing. Besides the awesome baked goods (which I promise to get to in a minute!) I love quite a few things about Scratch. The first is that this is a local business built from the ground up by two incredibly talented members of the Rochester community. They have a strong community presence and an instagram account that would put the editors at Conde Nast to shame. The shop itself is small and unassuming but the minute you enter it creates the feeling of home. Wedding announcements and thank yous from couples they have baked for adorn the left wall and everyone is always pleasant, upbeat and cheery even when they're crazy busy. Ok cool, but how are they baked goods? Literally everything is amazing. Honestly, I love waking up each Sunday and checking their instagram page to see what the featured donut will be. Donut Sunday is the best day of the week. They constantly come up with innovative flavor combinations and I have never been disappointed. Their chocolate chip cookies are to die for and are honestly the best I have ever eaten. I ordered a birthday cake from them about a year ago with the only guidance being, "make it as chocolatey as humanly possible". They delivered 100%, and the cake was a huge hit. Wow whadda bakery!! Everything they bake- vegan, gluten free, regular - is absolutely worth every bite. I have never had a better gluten free or vegan cookie before! Since I live close by and have quite the sweet tooth, I've stopped by on several occasions - their chocolate chip cookies are bomb along with their brownies, but their cake bites take the cake (ha ha) in my opinion! They are so moist, flavorful, and if you get two (not just one) , they perfectly satisfy that after meal sweet tooth. I've had several friends that have ordered specialty cookies and cakes through scratch and sing their praises on how easy they are to work with and how they nail it every time. So After five weeks with only a single communication which I had to initiate I got a reply! We loved the food here so much it made the unprofessional and disrespect with which we were treated so much worse. We were going to pick these guys to handle a significant part of the most important day of our lives and they couldn't even get us quote?! I digress. So I did get an apology in the email I received 5+ weeks after the cake tasting. They cited the holidays and some personal issues for being out of touch so long. Said they hoped they'd learn from this and offered us 10% discount. A discount is nice but it doesn't reassure my concern for their ability to juggle multiple tasks and getting everything for my event correct. Not to mention the fact weddings live and die on a timeline and we have already put a deposit down else where. The reason they get dropped to one star? They did not even include a quote?! I literally couldn't believe it. They sent me five or six pdf's listing their prices, each PDF had it's own category. I went through them all three times thinking that I had to be missing the quote. Nope. Not there. I have quotes from several other bakeries. Breaking down exactly what options we talked about in the store. Explaining each cost, normally in spreadsheet form. I can't even imagine just emailing a client a list of prices and telling them to figure it out. It takes balls I suppose but it showed me far and away this bakery is NOT a professional establishment. They may be good bakers but if they don't get help with someone with some business acumen I can't see how they will succeed. Can you imagine a clients reaction when they expected a nicely organised, professional and detailed quote and you just haphazardly toss them 6 pages of almost random prices? Yah. Small shop, big offerings! This little bakery on Park Ave is very small... don't plan on eating your treats there. The decor is cute though. Also, it's Park Ave... the name "Park" is a bit of a misnomer and you should expect to have to walk a bit from where you leave the car. Try the little side streets and you will find a spot. I have been here twice now. The first time I just got a little vanilla macaron, as I had never had one. Crispy delicious shell, creamy layer between. How great! A little pricey but a fun treat. I knew I needed to go again before leaving a review so I stopped by today. Despite arriving about 10 minutes before they closed the woman behind the counter was super friendly. This is always a good sign to me... having worked a LOT of retail I know it can be a bummer when someone comes in at the last second. But I made sure to select my treats quickly! I asked for a chocolate chip cookie, frosted shortbread, and a pumpkin salted caramel macaron. All were very good! I am generally only a fan of soft, fudgey cookies and these were more of the dry cooked variety but I still really enjoyed them. Prices are a bit on the steep side, and selection is somewhat limited. Those are the two biggest downsides. I would love to see a liiiiittle more to offer (but perhaps I am spoiled by some of the huge bakeries around here). They seem to do a lot of custom cakes and wedding orders. I will admit this will not beat out my "go to" bakery ('Get Caked' for life) but it is nice to have another sweets shop in rotation. read more

Just popped into Scratch the other weekend and finally had a second opportunity to treat myself to their goodies for the first time in easily a couple of months! They just opened their doors to the public and offer a somewhat limited variety of delicious baked goods ranging from cupcakes to bite-sized pies of all sort to cookies and even French macarons! I suspect they'll probably change their offerings as the days and seasons change, but from just one interaction with the girl behind the counter you know they're dedicated, passionate, and creative with everything they make! When I was there most recently I tried four mini petit fours - two macarons (salted caramel and berry), one bite-sized chocolate pumpkin pie, and one of their mini vegan shortbread cookies. The really good news is that the hardest-to-make petit fours were the best of all of them - that is to say, the macarons! The berry one actually tasted fruity like blueberry and raspberry and had just the texture you want to see with this type of cookie - a shiny, crisp exterior, a fluffy gooey cookie middle, and soft berry buttercream (folded with berry jam it looked like) squashed between the two shells. It was awesome! Instantly +3 stars just for being the only bakery in Rochester that I've found to get macarons (mostly) right! On the other side of the fence, the vegan shortbread was most definitely a sin against all things good in the world. Shortbread should and cannot be made without butter. Trying to vegan-ify it made it one of the most disgustingly dry, hard, sawdust-y, and cardboard-y cookies i've ever come across. If the macaron was an 11/10, this cookie by far was a negative 10/10. Stay away at all costs for fear of future dentist bills. But all in all, I have to say I like Scratch. Their macarons are the best in town (even if they don't look the prettiest), the staff is super sweet, and their creativity is through the roof! I would definitely NOT recommend any of their GF or Vegan desserts, but if you go for something without any restrictions, I bet you'll be a pretty happy camper! read more

I always loved their cupcakes and their farm/ barn/ shabby chic decor. They are very creative and I enjoy seeing their updates on instagram. However, every time I enter the shop I feel like I always come out with a heartbreak. One of the owners is pretty nice, she is professional and always carries a smile. However, the other lady (taller with glasses) always had a poker face. Even if the chalkboard says "having a frownday, eat a cupcake", I can't see my frown go away with her customer service. My daughter had a concert at Hochstien and I was supposed to bring a dozen nut free cookies for the reception. Being the hot mess of a mother that I am, I completely forgot when I dropped her off and had to find cookies fast. I looked up bakeries near me and called Scratch. I cleaned them out of cookies, but I am glad I did. The place is so quaintly decorated. Very simple, but the quality of the baked goods is super impressive. They have some books of past custom cakes they have made and I was very impressed. I will definitely keep them in mind for any special occasions. I think I brought the best cookies to the reception, I'm just bummed I didn't get to eat one myself.
