I visited this Subaru dealership in Rapid City, SD during a recent trip to the Black Hills region…read moreof the state as I consider my next move into retirement. As an FYI, this dealership is one of ONLY TWO in the entire state of South Dakota (the other being on the other side of the state in Sioux Falls). I wanted to check out the dealer's inventory of new 2026 Outbacks since the car was completely redesigned for the 2026 model year. While this is a relatively small Subaru dealership compared to others I've been to near where I live on the East Coast, they had a pretty impressive inventory of new 2026 Outbacks in a variety of trim levels. They also had a nice inventory of other Subaru models, too. While I was not buying at the moment, I spoke with a young salesman who did not apply the usual pressure tactics; he informed me that in So. Dakota, documentation fees are minimal because the buyer is responsible for paying the sales taxes, registration and title fees themselves and that those requirements are fulfilled in the buyer's county treasurer's offices. Thus, the potential for additional dealer profiteering rip-offs that can be seen in states like NEW JERSEY and FLORIDA where the documentation fees are UNREGULATED by the STATE do not occur in So. Dakota. This was refreshing to hear and I decided that when I buy my next Subaru after my move to South Dakota in 2027, that I will seriously consider returning to COURTESY SUBARU in Rapid City.

I was in a desperate situation and needed a vehicle for my family and children, so I wasn't thinking as carefully as I should have been. Looking back, I really wish I would have slowed down and compared my options. The first vehicle Blake Hanna brought out for us had the airbags deployed and the seatbelts didn't work. He was asking about my down payment before I had even really gotten a chance to look at the vehicle. Because I was desperate for a car, I was honestly willing to accept what was available to me until I saw the condition that car was in. I just couldn't understand how that was considered okay to put a family in. I eventually purchased a different vehicle that I liked. I put $3,000 down and my payments were still almost $500 a month on a vehicle that was already about 15 years old. I understand that I should have shopped around more and known more as a first time buyer, and I take responsibility for that. But there were other things that happened that really bothered me. The paperwork from the sale says the vehicle had 120,000 miles, but I have a time stamped picture from the same day showing the odometer at approximately 128,000 miles. That's an 8,000 mile difference, and I still have the paperwork and the picture. I also referred my husband to Blake after seeing the advertisements about getting a referral bonus when someone you refer buys a vehicle. When I asked about the referral bonus, I was told I couldn't get it because my husband and I were in the same household. That wasn't something I understood from the advertising, and I had to argue about it for quite a while before I eventually received a $188 referral check. What makes this whole situation even more disappointing is that my husband's experience with Blake was actually really good at first. My husband really liked him and spoke very highly of him. Blake gained his trust and told him that after making his payments on time for a year, he would help him get into a truck. My husband believed him and had been looking forward to that for an entire year. That's actually why I didn't leave this review sooner. I wanted to give Blake the benefit of the doubt. My husband trusted him, and I wanted to see if he would actually keep his word. When that one year mark finally came, my husband was expecting Blake to follow through. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. My husband was genuinely hurt and disappointed, and so was I. I can't speak for anyone else's experience, and I'm sure other people may have had good experiences here. But based on everything that happened to me, from being shown a vehicle with deployed airbags and non-working seatbelts, to the mileage discrepancy, to having to fight for the referral bonus, and then watching my husband put his trust in someone for an entire year only to be disappointed, I personally cannot recommend Blake Hanna. I went into this dealership needing help because I was in a difficult situation. I just wish I would have felt like someone was actually looking out for me instead of feeling like my desperation was being taken advantage of. If you're a first time buyer, my advice is to slow down, inspect everything, verify the mileage, read every piece of paperwork carefully, compare different dealerships, and don't feel like you have to take whatever is put in front of you just because you need a vehicle.

Notified them immediately and they told me that I had to wait 2 weeks to get into service. I did. I gave them a video/audio of the noise. At the 2 week appointment, it wouldnt make the noise, like I had explained to them. It only does it on a gravel road going uphill or down hill. The initial response from service was, "I dont know". Next I asked to speak to the sales manager. Randy Lathen spoke to me and I thought we came to an agreement on how to deal with this very annoying noise. He told me that if he had to, he would drive a service to tech to my residence and drive it so the tech could diagnose. Six days later I had heard NOTHING. On the 6th day I attempted to return the car out of frustration. I was frustrated and angry. By this point we were a month past my down payment, and 3 weeks past delivery. Randy Lathen denied making that agreement. He just kept saying "we don't have any loaners". Then when I tried to return the keys, he refused and told me that if I left the car he would have it towed as "abandoned". I asked if he was going to stand on the "contract". He said you have a contract. I told him I wanted my money back. He smirked and said "That's not going to happen." Lastly, Service Manager, Rudy Hernandez asked if he could look at the car. I said that would be great. We walked to the car and he showed me an adjustment that the previous techs failed to try or mention. I will be attempting to contact the General Manager. I hope the problem is fixed but thanks to being put off for service on my new car and the attitude of Randy Lathen, I no longer want it.

Customer service in the service department has been extremely disappointing…read more I brought in my 2020 Tiguan for an oil‑consumption issue (losing about a quart every 800 miles). I dropped it off on Monday and was told it would be in the shop by Wednesday or Thursday. By Thursday afternoon, I still hadn't heard anything, so I called for an update. They told me it hadn't been looked at yet but would let me know when it was. I asked whether I should make an appointment and was told it wasn't necessary. When I called again Friday, they said it had been in the shop but the technician hadn't finished testing. I never received a single status call or text. When I mentioned I wasn't getting their text updates, they just shrugged. On Monday, they told me my oil was full and therefore there was no oil‑consumption problem. I explained that I had topped it off before bringing it in because I don't drive around low on oil. Only then did they agree to continue testing. After 11 days, they said they found nothing wrong. When I asked about the excessive vacuum at the oil breather cap, they dismissed it as "not a problem." Then they handed me a $170 bill for their "inspection" and tried to upsell me on brakes, a tire rotation, and transaxle fluid service. I declined. Overall, the lack of communication, the dismissive attitude, and the upsell attempt after nearly two weeks without answers were unacceptable.

Mitch and I negotiated the deal via phone and everything was waiting for me upon my arrival. Not only did Mitch have my new truck ready and waiting, but everyone involved in the deal expedited the paperwork and had me on my way - but not before Mitch took the time to explain the endless features of my new Denali. If there was an option for negative stars, Granite Motors would deserve it…read more We brought our daughter's 2016 Buick (with give or take 75,000 miles) into their service department because the check engine light kept coming on. The service writer told us the turbo was the problem and that it was covered by warranty. We were shocked, so we asked THREE different times if he was certain. Each time, he confidently reassured us it was covered. Based on that guarantee, we agreed to move forward and even requested pricing on additional maintenance. By Monday, after hearing nothing, we called--only to be told: "You're going to be upset with me." Suddenly, the story changed. Now the turbo wasn't covered. The excuse? He "fat-fingered the VIN number." This wasn't a one-time slip-up; it was repeated misinformation given three separate times. That's not just sloppy--it's outright negligence. Even worse, the service manager and dealership manager admitted fault, yet the best they were willing to offer was a measly $230 off labor. Then, instead of making things right, they started avoiding us altogether. At one point, their response was literally: "Well, you're more than welcome to come and get your vehicle as we don't have to do the work." That statement sums up the culture at Granite Motors: zero accountability, zero integrity, and zero respect for customers. They admitted fault and still refused to honor their word. That's not customer service--it's a bait-and-switch backed by arrogance. We will never do business with Granite Motors again, and we strongly urge anyone considering them for sales or service to take your business elsewhere. There are plenty of dealerships who actually stand behind their word. Granite Motors is not one of them.
