As a first time home buyer I had been told by many friends and family to expect the inspection process to be less than desirable. Luckily, I chose Scott Home Inspection and my experience was great! The office staff was professional and helpful, and my inspector (Jeff Trousil) was on time, kind, and patient. He went through his list with me, took the time to explain his findings, and showed me things that I would not normally understand. He was quite thorough and I felt very empowered and knowledgeable after our meeting. I highly recommend Scott Home Inspection to anyone needing their services. Our first inspection by Scott's was excellent. Extremely detailed & in depth. That's why we came back. The most recent one was a different story. The inspector seemed to gloss over many things & tried to downplay issues without evidence. We were called prior & told our inspector would take only two hours to finish an inspection that normally takes longer -- I think he glossed over many things as a result. Specifics we found after moving in that a visual inspection should have caught: * An interior door on the second floor with visible crack/damage from being forced. The report says interior doors were tested. This one isn't noted anywhere. * Mouse droppings under the kitchen sink -- a cabinet he opened & photographed -- & elsewhere in the home. No mention in the report. We now have an active rodent problem we didn't know about at closing. * The front door handle sticks & fights you when unlocking. Entry door locks & latches are explicitly listed as inspected in his own report. On top of that, three window coverings fell off the wall the first time we pulled the cords. Technically outside inspection scope -- but it speaks to the overall condition of a house we were told had basically nothing wrong with it. The in-person review made it worse. We were told there was basically nothing wrong with the house, & our questions were treated as an inconvenience. He seemed annoyed, arrogant & unkind. When asked, he explicitly said he didn't see evidence of mice -- verbally & on the report -- leading me to believe he was lazy & sped through it. Not characteristics of a great inspector. His own report lists 59 maintenance items & 8 repair recommendations -- so the verbal summary & the written report told two different stories. When I hire an inspector, I'm more impressed by people who are nit picky than forgiving. This is a huge purchase so I prefer someone who's kind, willing to take the time to make sure he doesn't miss anything at all & looks out for us. There are less expensive inspectors out there who are less forgiving than Scott's was this time around. I pay for anal retentive. That was not my experience. Worst of all? I asked for a refund & they flat out refused. It's possible they could do the same for you. I don't think we'll use Scott's ever again. I wouldn't recommend them & ESPECIALLY not Todd Brualdi for inspection services. I'm disappointed in Scott's leadership. Once upon a time, (in my opinion) it felt like a well ran firm that cared about their clients. That's not my opinion, anymore. read more

They pulled off, via screwing the metal plate, the plate on an electrical car charger causing a loose wire that almost caught my home on fire. They claim it was loose, but it was never loose before the plate was pulled off. They are doing zero to fix the issue. They want proof, but having a correctly installed box for over 2 years with no issues until they opened it was not proof enough.. Horrible company hired incompetent young inspectors without proper training. read more

I requested a sewer inspection, but because I wasn't having the home put on the market, they refuse to perform the service. It's listed as a service on their website. Apparently the $275 they were going to charge for the inspection for the sewer pipe wasn't enough. An inspection is an inspection, isn't it? read more

Matt the inspector did a very thorough job and he took the time in the evening to go through the report in detail with us. He was very factual with his findings and the rationale behind them. This allowed us to make an informed decision on our potential new to us home. The scheduling team was also awesome and they helped pivot days/times of availability. I would not recommend Scott Home Inspection for anything. They did not do a thorough job on the inspection. Especially the inspector Mark O'Meara who is not trustworthy and does not own up to what was discussed during the inspection. During my inspection Mark verbally told us that our house had a passive radon mitigation system and that only a fan would be needed to activate the system to reduce the radon levels in the house. When we hired a radon specialist to come to the house to activate the system, there was no radon mitigation system to be found. Matt did a very poor job with our inspection. And when confronted, conveniently Matt stated that he does not remember anything from the inspection. What a POS. This unexpected cost is now going to cost us out pocket money which could have been avoided if Matt did his job. If I could give 0 stars I would. Do not go with this company. They have no integrity. So. The original service was great. Quick, easy, and got good results. However. We finally moved into the house they inspected and there are leaks everywhere that were not noted on inspection. When I looked through it all, the images of where the leaks are show that there really wasn't an inspection, as there was stuff from the previous homeowners covered everything. We will have to replace over $6k of things in order to correct the leaks between bathrooms and the kitchen. Pretty disappointed on that. read more

As a first time home buyer I was told many times that the home inspection process is one of the scariest parts of purchasing a home. The number of items that come back can be daunting and can often cause buyer's remorse to kick in. Lane Ward was kind, friendly, and made me feel comfortable throughout the entire process. The office had given him some notes it seemed from our original conversation so he knew that this was my first purchase. I asked him if I could follow him throughout the process and ask questions and he was more than happy to let me do so. He explained to me the process of what he was looking at, what he was looking for, and also gave some helpful recommendations along the way. As it would be the case with any home, but especially an older home, he explained some common things he sees with older homes and what he has heard from some customers about that they do to their homes to improve any issues they find. He was so thorough and had great attention to detail, pointing out things I would have never noticed. The office staff was friendly when I called and when they asked what kind of inspection I wanted, I was truly unsure as I didn't know what was typical. We recently did a home inspection on a house that we are considering purchasing. The primary home inspector did his inspection and then quickly went through his checklist. He didn't really seem to be very aware and knowledgeable about much of anything at all and I would never use him again. There was a loose pipe in one of the sinks and I said, "oh, did you try tightening it" and he replied, "no, that's not my job". This is just a poor attitude and this was only one thing. Several things like the roof couldn't be inspected because of the snow and I asked him to come back as I had paid for those things as part of the inspection. He agreed, but definitely was not forthright in offering to come and do them. I would personally use a different home inspector in the future as Scott seems to not have the best talent. read more

I have to rescind my initial rating. After being in the house for a year I can no longer recommend this company. I'm now dealing with foundation issues because they missed that my gutters were a complete disaster. Every gutter person who comes by says they are the worst gutter install they have ever seen, water is basically going straight down into the foundation which has in a year caused my exterior and interior walls to crack significantly among other issues. They didn't check the shower pan on my tiled shower so I have water pooling in the corner so I'm going to have to get that redone. My whole bathroom was smelling like sewage and I couldn't figure out what was going on. Turns out, that same shower also didn't have a ptrap in it. Also in this same shower (even after the ptrap issue was fixed) I get the loudest gurgling noises emanating from the drain when you run the washing machine. The venting for plumbing is all wrong in this house. Also not too long after moving in, my basement bathroom flooded and got sewage everywhere. I was getting an insane amount of bugs on the first floor and after getting sprayed multiple times realized (when my earbud disappeared into the abyss) that I had a massive hole under my vanity that led direct to the crawl space... no wonder Also the plumbing job they did on this vanity^ was abysmal - looked like it was done by child. That's just the tip of the iceberg of the issues I've run into. The last year has been issue after issue. I've been so focused trying to deal with it all and it just hit me that this stuff should have been caught by the inspection. I remembered that I had given this company a good review so I came back to at least fix that. I still agree that the organization of the report was useful but you should 100% get a second opinion if you choose to use them. read more
