When we arrive the first thing that I noticed were the cute coffee mugs out front. And I said to myself that before we leave, I have to purchase one, and so I did! We sat down and our server came to our table to bring us some coffees and water, and then took our order for our food. I debated for a while if I wanted to order the Dutch baby pancakes because the server did make me aware it would take about 20 minutes for preparation. I allowed everybody else at my table to place their order and then I finally made my decision and I said what the heck, let's get it! I placed my order and to my surprise my order was the first thing to come out! Boy was thrilled. The pancake itself is huge, and the smell alone was amazing. The Dutch baby came with a couple different syrups, some lemon wedges, powdered sugar, and a jam. I decorated my pancake, and I went at it, it was heaven. Soft, flaky, sweet and definitely satisfying. It's a definite must if you're coming here for breakfast or even brunch. The restaurant got filled pretty quickly, it was on Labor Day that we visited, and when we arrived, there were not many tables that were occupied, but slowly the restaurant was filled. There were no complaints at my table, everybody enjoyed their breakfast and everything came out correct and perfect.

My cheesy hashbrowns were great. The avocado benedict was also very good. It was the poor service and having to wait 20 minutes for the check that lost a star on the review.

Allow yourself a little breakfast sin at Perk Up Kitchen…read more It's important to have a favorite breakfast joint in the place(s) you reside and I think we found ours! The interior and exterior vibe are cool and inviting but it's the menu that really makes breakfast here a special experience. Each item is a little work of art in flavor, creativity, visual appeal, and the trendy/classic balance. Let's talk some of these menu items that impressed. Any good breakfast starts with good coffee and juice. The coffee is great and the orange juice is obviously fresh squeezed - the bright flavor that greets your mouth first sip proves it. We chose a variety of different kinds of items. I went sweet with the Strawberry Cornbread waffle. The flavors were a taste of strawberry heaven with its fresh strawberries PLUS a syrupy compote, honey butter and whipped cream. My husband likes to go hearty with layered potato and egg dishes so he went the distance and got the Breakfast Poutine. Layers of goodness in every forkful. What really ties this one together is the white sausage gravy. My kids always choose pancakes but a shout out to the scotch square accompaniment to the kids meal. A little stolen nibble reminded me of when my grandma used to melt butterscotch chips for recipes when I was a kid. Nice touch for kids and their parents reaching across their plates. I would rank this even higher than the bougie, high priced breakfast joints back home (which are struggling to prove their value for me these days). The food here gets you that more approachable decadence without making your eyes completely pop out of your head come check-time.

We even sat outside and enjoyed the fall weather. I started with the Maple Cold Brew Old Fashioned, made with Bulleit Bourbon, espresso liqueur, cold brew, maple syrup, and bitters. It was such a fun twist on an Old Fashioned - rich, coffee-forward, and just the right amount of sweet. For brunch, I ordered the Sunday in Italy - roasted red peppers, bruschetta tomatoes, artichokes, spinach, garlic, Gouda, fontina, and Gruyère topped with pesto. It came with greens with their house maple vinaigrette. Lots of flavor and definitely a satisfying brunch dish. Instead of toast, I upgraded for a gluten-free chocolate muffin, which was a nice little sweet treat to finish things off. Great place to catch up with friends over brunch, especially if you like creative cocktails and dishes with lots of flavor. I'd definitely come back to try more of the menu!

My dinner was especially good....the chicken fried perfectly...all dark meat the way I like it. The potato salad was not what I expected but I was pleasantly surprised. I'm used to a mayo based potato salad but this was even better with lots of flavor! The corn was also delicious. Everyone was very happy with their dinners. The chicken and waffle dish was also good. Ratio of breading to chicken was perfect and perfectly seasoned. The honey butter that came with it was also delicious. The New Orleans shrimp bowl was great too. The ratio of shrimp, which was perfectly cooked, to rice was good. Lots of great flavor. I think that everyone in our party enjoyed what they ordered. The only "ding" would be the service. We had to ask for silverware so we could eat and had to wait for straws because she forgot. I'm still going to give it 5 stars even though the service was lacking a bit. She was very nice but seemed rushed.

Parking is a challenge. The restaurant's parking lot is much too small for a restaurant of this size, and because it's backed up against hotels, finding a spot meant parking farther away. I ordered the Carolina Summer Risotto (GF) for $21.95 because I love a good risotto, and with very limited gluten-free options, this seemed like the best choice. The menu describes it as saffron risotto with Cajun shrimp, tomato, asparagus, zucchini, squash, arugula, and lemon. What I received was a very small scoop--maybe 1/2 cup--of what tasted more like yellow, sticky rice with shrimp. There was no asparagus at all, and only a couple of small pieces of zucchini and squash cut into tiny chunks. It looked nothing like the photo on the menu. For nearly $22, I expected a much more substantial portion--not something that looked like a food-truck serving in a paper cup from the fair. My daughter ordered the 6-piece chicken strips with fries for $17, and thankfully, those were much better and very generous in portions. The chicken was very moist and, in her opinion, worth the price. The atmosphere was another issue. It was extremely loud, almost to the point where it was difficult to hear the person sitting across from you--even though the restaurant wasn't full. The waitstaff was friendly, which I appreciated, but unfortunately, the 'okay' entree food, portion size, noise level, and parking issues outweighed the positives.
