The coveted 5 stars. I truly try not to give 5 stars unless it's a special experience. This met that on a number of levels. One, people. Renee behind the bar was awesome. Before long she was treating me like a regular. Since it was a bit of a rough day, that really made a big difference in my mood. Two, the food was really good. Went simple with chicken parm with red pepper risotto. Found out later from a regular that I hit on a sweet spot. Chicken Parm there is legendary. The sauce, I could've eaten it as soup. Amazing. Three, did I mention the people. It was St Patty's Day so I stumbled in on the right night. It's usually packed I was told but the three guys around the bar that I talked with welcomed the southerner with the funny accent Ken, Dave & Ed were great to chat with. They also have their own Knob Creek Barrel Select that while it's a 120 proof, drinks so smooth. If you're in Green Tree give it a shot, you won't be disappointed. read more

Wanted to try something other than our regular places. We arrived very early to sit at the bar. The bartender was so welcoming & attentive. Even though it was 4pm on a Friday the bar was full with what it seemed like regular patrons who visit often. We had the potato leek soup recommended by the bartender. It was creamy, spiced right & amazing. I really wish I would of gotten a bowl instead of a cup. I read so many reviews of the zucchini & they were all right. Wonderful light & cooked perfectly. We did get the side of horseradish which was also yummy. I didn't care for the taste of the tomato sauce, the green pepper taste over powered the tomato sauce. Crab stuffed mushrooms were ok. What a fantastic dinner we had before the new year. I had never been and heard so many great things from the friends who invited me. Our server had excellent recommendations for everything and checked in with us all through the evening. I enjoyed the tasty Salmon and shrimp dinner with a side of pasta. It included a house salad which had an excellent Italian vinaigrette. The meal overall was a generous serving for me, so I took homethe leftovers to savor for lunch the next day. My boyfriend and I had a gift card for this restaurant and finally got around to using it. We didn't know what to expect since reviews were limited and mixed, but we were really impressed! We did feel a little underdressed in jeans and didn't have a reservation, but at least we know for next time. We had the fried zucchini, which I highly recommend -- it's one of their signatures. We also loved our bread bowl, salad and chicken pastina soup! For our entrees, my boyfriend had the NY strip steak with mushrooms and I had the eggplant parm. My boyfriend loved the steak and my eggplant parm was amazing -- definitely made fresh and the portions are huge. We also got a side of pasta with our meals and the homemade sauce is amazing. I've seen a few comments where people are saying that the portions don't justify the price and I don't see how that's true at all. The portions are HUGE. You will have leftovers 100%. The chicken parm had 3 pieces of breaded chicken, and came with a side of pasta and a soup/salad. The chicken was super flavorful and perfectly breaded and juicy. The appetizers are also easily shareable with a group 3-4, especially the zucchini and the calamari. I've also had the pasta Scoglio with white sauce which again was a huge portion and had large shrimps and scallops. Service is always very attentive where your drinks are always filled and you're checked on during your meal. The interior takes me back to an 80's movie, but it is super cozy. Dress code is definitely more on the conservative side. One of the better Italian restaurants in the Pittsburgh area! read more

Thank goodness for local's. I come to the Pittsburgh area at least 6-7 per year, and I normally find restaurants near my hotel. I was attending meetings at one of our offices that's located in building 8, and a colleague, recommended Scoglio's. First, I never knew that building 7 had a restaurant, and second, why didn't she tell me earlier? When I walked in, I already knew I was going to like this place...a lot. The atmosphere was cozy, comfortable, and relaxing, and I could tell that the 'locals' dine hear quite often. Normally I would belly up to the bar, have a couple of cocktails and eat dinner at the bar. Not this evening. I wanted to relax, take a deep breath, and mentally unwind, so I dined in the dining room. The hostess sat me quickly, and my waitress introduced herself, and handed me a menu and asked what I would like to drink. Being the nice guy that I am, I acquiesced (Not really) her offer for a vodka tonic, and when she came back she went through the specials and wanted to know if I had any questions. Normally, I can look at a menu and I can make a quick decision, and I was on track to order a pasta dish, but Swordfish was one of their specials. I know what you're thinking. Swordfish, in Pittsburgh? Why Swordfish? Why not the Chicken Marsala, or the Salmon, or the Chicken Parmigiana? Well, the main reason was I like Swordfish, and I haven't had it in a while. I bypassed the appetizer, ordered a house salad with blue cheese (The blue cheese is fantastic) mixed veggies, and Swordfish, Medium-Rare. Quite frankly, my expectations for the Swordfish were quite low. When the waitress brought my entree and sat it down in front of me, she asked me to cut it to see if it was cooked to my liking. That was a good sign, as normally if you're not asked to cut into a nice piece of fish, that mostly means it was frozen. So, the fish was cooked perfectly, seasoned well, and the Swordfish was absolutely delicious. Who would have thought? Well, the many patrons that visit Scoglio and my work colleague. I was hesitant to come here because of the mid-level reviews, but my boss took us out to lunch! The dining chairs were so comfy! Tables covered in linen, bread with dipping oil, water glass in addition to your beverage. Old school higher end dining experience right in a business plaza. As a vegetarian, I got the portabella mushroom pasta with rigatoni noodles. I didn't expect much honestly but this was the most flavorful pasta I've had in a long time! Large portion with a flavorful marinara sauce, thick cut sautéed portabella mushroom pieces with a garlic butter taste to them. I also got the house salad with Scoglios dressing- wow that dressing is sour! I LOVE sour dressing so I was in heaven - but I did actually pucker my face a couple of times! Sooo yummy. My coworker got the pecan ball dessert which looked really really good, and it was about the size of a baseball. He said it was really good! Very good food and fast/friendly service. Weird rule about not being able to substitute (even for a fee) wedding soup for the one they offer a cup of with your pasta (and warning, their menu link on their website starts out on the LUNCH menu), but the prices are well worth it. I got a TON of food including some of the biggest scallops ever in my Scoglio. Delicious food and large portions. I hadn't heard of it before it was suggested for book club, but it was really good. They also have a ramp (completely unmarked - lawsuit waiting to happen) on the way to the restrooms, so beware! I'm downgrading my review to 3 stars (from 4) after the management defended their ridiculous policy of offering one of their 4 soups (all the same price on the menu) for free with the pasta and not even allowing a substitution for another soup of the same menu cost for an up charge). We will NOT be going back. Plenty of great Italian restaurants in the area that are very good (and most of them are less expensive). read more

Was my first visit to Scoglio's and I was looking forward to it. Started by ordering a Beans and Greens appetizer - one of my favorite Italian dishes. A generous portion was served but the escarole was tough, chewy and bitter (also the opinion of my lunch mate). I told the waitress that I wanted to send it back. She took it away but shortly returned to say that the chef had said there was nothing wrong with it and that I couldn't return it. I called over the manager who voiced the same. WOW! I am a long time restaurant diner and have never experienced such a refusal. Their menu consists of traditional Italian dishes with a variety of sauces and preparations available. I have never had a bad dish here. This place was good. It was convenient to access from Greentree and there was lots of free parking. The restaurant is kind of dated but the food was delicious. I was a little bit disappointed by the homemade ravioli which seemed to be a rather small portion for the amount of sauce and the price we paid. I was told I got the very last of it because the person who makes it didn't come into work that day. So not quite as fresh as normal. My fiance made her own pasta combination with mushrooms and chicken. She barely put a dent in it and had leftovers for 2 more meals. We may be back again, but only if we're in the area. read more

We have gone there when we are in the area, or we want a good meal. The food is consistently very good. Now, it's usually an older group in the restaurant and many customers appear to be regulars. But I take that as a very good sign. Who would keep going back for bad or mediocre food??? The staff is so friendly, knowledgeable and professional. Great group of waitresses. My wife loves the crab cakes and I love their pasta bolognese. I order the slow roasted bolognese often when I'm out. Scoglio's is the best around, in my humble opinion. We usually order their Fried Zucchini, very light breading, and flavorful. They warn you it feed 2-4, in our opinion, closer to the 4. But it's definitely worth it. If not an appetizer then we'll have soup & the Scoglio salad. We also love the English Spots and any of the Parmigiana selections. Consistently good food, well prepared a served with a smile. At 22 years of age and as an immigrant we had very little money but chose to have our wedding reception at Scoglios. we had a cash bar as that was all we could afford then. The owner was extremely rude. She told us at the end of the night that she could have made more money keeping the restaurant open instead of having our reception there due to guests not Splurging on alcohol as much as she probably wanted. she also demanded that we go to my parents house, wake them up, and return with a cash payment for the reception at the end of the night. We have been married now for ten years and I have to say my memory of this reception has soured our wedding day. The owner only cares about the dollar, could not give a shit about the customer. if you aren't white and don't go in reeking of cash don't waste your time. Hidden in a sprawling office park (building #7 to be exact), Scoglio's apparently exists to serve the archetypal company man or woman. It is a place for the annual Christmas party where Barb in Finance gets tipsy and does karaoke or for the after work drink during which colleagues vent and tell each other how they really feel about the CEO. Kay and I stopped in for dinner in the thick of the Yuletide Season, driving around for a few minutes before coming upon it (remember kids, Foster Plaza, Building #7). A holiday get-together was underway, so we were seated near the bar by a server with a Santa Claus hat and snowflake earrings on. We knew at that moment that we were in for a meal of Italian tradition and not fusion, tapas, or anything fussy or trendy. As my regular readers know, that's kosher with me. A stunning house of cards that was Scoglio's take on fried zucchini was whisked past us, but due to its serving being intended more for five than two (I would have snapped a photo but wasn't fast enough) we instead went with a serving of Baked Rotolo to begin our supper. Spinach, ricotta, prosciutto, and mozzarella are rolled in a carpet of housemade pasta with a Farlenaise sauce. Some research indicates that the creamy, tomato-imbibed gravy is either a creation of the restaurant or another sauce (Alfredo? Bechamel?) modified or renamed. Regardless, this was essentially a successful hybrid of a Swiss roll and a ravioli with the salty-sweet ham rising above the cream of the cheeses and the mysterious sauce. An entree in itself, it almost seemed unfair for this to be considered an appetizer. The signature, house-dressed, feta-topped Scoglio Salad acted as a tangy, chilly, fresh, palate-wiping prelude to the Stuffed Sea Scallops, a quartet of thick, quivering mollusks filled with tuna salad's warm crustacean equivalent in Crabmeat Imperial. Dressed with a milky, chowder-ish spinach sauce, the newly captured scallops bled sea water, mingling with the flavors of the broiled crab and its lardy, hearty binder. Dessert was a Pecan Ball Sundae garnished with seemingly fresh whipped cream (cream ruled everything around this meal let me tell you) and chocolate sauce, recalling fried ice cream with that crunchy, nutty, sugared shell that covered the globe of frozen vanilla. Despite our obvious non-affiliation with whatever businesses occupy Foster Plaza, Kay and I were absolutely doted on by our server as if we'd been dining there for years. On a cold, winter evening, we felt as if we had dropped in on a loving relative who didn't care that we were disheveled after having put in a hard eight and just so happened to have dinner ready with enough left over for the two of us. I half expected her to introduce us to everyone in the room. Scoglio's won't expand your tastes or cause upheaval in your personal culinary world. Rather, they'll merely charm you with smashing, impeccably realized renditions of the classics, and in an era of blurring innovation, a plate of truly tasty, carefully homemade spaghetti is sometimes preferred over the next molecular gastronomy experiment. read more

Only thing was the hostess was a male with glasses Im waiting for 10-15 minutes to be taken care of, he was not at the front desk he was in the bar. When he came over to seat us I had smelled alcohol on his breath. Wasn't sure if your aloud to drink at work or not but very inappropriate. Also right before we left we seen him yelling at one of the waitresses, saying she don't know how to do her job she's a piece of sh*t right in front of all the other tables she had, very embarrassing for him and the poor waitress. called to place an order a day early-- spoke with a lady who said would be ready at 11:30am, came in at 11:30 the next day to get order and got attitude from lady at hostess stand stating "well we don't open til 11:30am so it wont be ready yet" ---- not sure why I was told 11:30 directly from an employee then was made felt like I was being an inconvenience to them.
