Schübel-Auer is a "Heuriger", which in German means "Winery"... or in this sense "Wine Garden". There are dozens of these wine gardens in the outer areas of Vienna...I highly recommend visiting at least one! Schübel-Auer is easy to get to: take Tram D heading north all the way to the end will drop you in front at the Nußdorf Beethovengang stop. This will also get you an interesting look at the less glamorous side of Vienna for the everyday locals. (Next door is another Heuriger called Kierlinger, but I didn't a chance to visit this one) Mostly locals, with a just a few business tourists. All the staff did speak pretty good English. Rick Steve's guidebooks recommend this Heuriger, so they're probably prepared for tourists. First, find the food counter, you'll find items labeled in German and English. We got there later, after 8pm, so the selection wasn't as good, but still good enough. Figure about €10-15 per person, depending if your appetite. I learned the hard way that the pastrami was served cold, but it was till pretty good. Nothing fancy, but everything we picked was good. Second, grab a table, any free table. A waiter will come up for drink orders, aka wine order. Typically there's only 2-4 choices. But the best part is, its cheap! A half liter is only €6-7, or a glass for €1.70. Our intent was to go to a heurigen, but we had left the name and address in the hotel. We decided to head to Nussdorf and take our chances on one. We got on the D tram and rode to the end of the line. From the tram stop you can see the Schübel-Auer sign. It was very busy and there wasn't anyone to seat people so we just grabbed an empty table. Inside they have a food case with a variety of meats, side dishes, and desserts. We grabbed a tray and cutlery and napkins then stood near the food. The women behind the counter dish up the food for you then weigh it to determine the price. You pay them, then take the food to your table. All of the food we ordered was tasty and seemed homemade. It also was a good value. The liter of house wine was very nice. The wine is ordered from the waiter who you also pay. A very special time on a nice evening. And a must do when in Vienna. read more

So much fun!!! I was a bit apprehensive about leaving the center of the town to find this heuriger, but it was well worth the (mini) trek! Upon entering, I was a bit confused, but the staff was super helpful with food orders (inside) and drink orders (outside at your table). The food was fantastic - really fresh and flavorful (and extremely reasonably priced!). I sat outside in a charming garden full of green wooden benches. The weather was lovely. I ordered white wine and was given...a beer mug full of wine! It was delicious and at around 2 Euro, very affordable. As a spot to sit and relax and enjoy a beautiful day with good food, delicious wine and a friendly staff, definitely visit this spot! read more

We tried to go here but they had already closed for season in mid November. Staff was there bc they had a private party that night. One of the waiters directed us to a different Heuriger which was nice until you realized after the fact that he gave us the absolute longest route. If we walked out their back gate we would have been right there. Didn't make a great impression on us. read more

The restaurant has a buffet where you choose and pay for the weight of the plate with food. Everything is homemade and of good quality. The dishes vary from day to day and are seasonal. We had a table in the garden and the atmosphere was casual. If you like to eat at a traditional Heuriger this is a good place. read more

This Heuriger in the 19th district of Vienna rolls with the times but keeps up strong Viennese traditions! Perhaps that's why they've been in business since 1711! The house wine flows at a steady pace and the traditional buffet is filled to the brim with Austrian delights. Most food sensitivities are considered and everyone from vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and lactose intolerant can find something yummy at this Heuriger. My parents were in town for my wedding and I wanted to treat them to a real Viennese experience, but my mom and I cannot eat regularly prepared schnitzel or backhendl. Luckily there is the Schuebl-Auer! If you let them know at the time you make your reservation that you must eat gluten-free, they prepare it fresh for you when you arrive! Their website is a huge plus as well. It has so much information on it concerning their food and history and various rooms. It would be a great place for a party! Only thing is, I forgot to tell my mom that they don't serve rum and coke at a Heuriger, but she was happy with the house wine. Next time we will try the schnapps! read more

Recommend making a reservation. Options to sit outside and inside. Staff speaks English. Menu does not translate. Order wine, beer, schnitzel, fried chicken and small sides from service staff. I guess I just don't get the hype of this heuriger. Supposedly, this is Rick Steves' favorite one. Perhaps if we had come in the summer to enjoy the patio, we might have had a more positive experience. It was easy to get to the tavern since it was just steps from the last tram stop. We weren't really sure how the whole food system worked. We pointed to dishes, and the server prepared them for us. It feels strange to pay by weight but not be able to portion the food out yourself. All the warm items were heated up in the microwave. I got a mixed veggie dish that was good and a spinach dish that was ok. My husband liked it enough to get his own serving during his second round of food. His meats (mostly sausage and slices of beef) were hit and miss. He ended up eating a huge portion of sauerkraut because we both ordered some, and I discovered at the table I couldn't eat it because there was meat in it. I decided to indulge in a cheese strudel since it sounded very Austrian. Luckily I got the creme anglaise on the side or else it would've been a little grody. The dessert just didn't do it for me. I assumed there would be at least a couple choices for wine, but it was just the gruner. It was decent and priced right, but I've had much better gruners. We want here on our last night in Vienna, and I'd absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting Vienna. Definitely one of the highlights of our visit. There were only a couple other tourists there. The rest seemed to be locals. There were a good number of people there for a Tuesday night, but it's a large place so it was very easy to get a good table. The staff were helpful and spoke good English. In particular, the woman behind the food counter recommended some food for us to try, which ended up being excellent. We got pork, kraut, and a pasta dish with bacon. The wine was also excellent. We were pleasantly surprised after reading some reviews that suggested it was just ok. The white wine was very refreshing and good. The red wine was fantastic. Prices were also very good. The red was possibly the best value glass of wine I've ever had. The whole meal came out to about €20 between the two of us, which felt good for its quality. Also, it was easy to get to from the Ringstraße via the D tram. We went to this heuriger on a recommendation, and were not disappointed. This Viennese 'wine garden' was very welcoming to our party, even though we were the only tourists in sight. The staff was very helpful, especially the warm lady behind the food buffet. We grabbed a table in the no smoking section, and a very polite lady informed us there was to be a meeting near where we were seated. She recommended we relocate, which was a great move. We sat at a communal table inside, a waiter took the drink order. We proceeded to the buffet, telling the server what you would like, and she dishes it out. All the food is sold by weight. We ate like kings, The pork belly and 'wild garlic spread were memorable, the house wine was very good. It was a great value. We have a few days in Vienna at the end of our trip and we will be headed there again for dinner one of those nights. I am hoping the weather will be conducive to eating at one of the outside tables on our return. read more
