We made a reservation here about a month in advance, and I am so glad we did! This place was packed…read morewhen we arrived, as expected since it is one of the most well-known schnitzel spots in Vienna. I was worried this place was over-hyped and more of a place you have to "check off the list" than somewhere you want to eat because of the food. If you have any doubts like I did, forget about them because this was actually the best schnitzel we had on our trip! Their potato salad and tomato salads, also amazing! I love that they had option for their schnitzel - the chicken and original were our favorites! Definitely check this spot out when in Vienna - you won't be disappointed!

This is probably one of the most popular schnitzel restaurants in all of Vienna. Do not come…read morewithout a reservation unless you're prepared to stand outside for quite some time. I had a reservation at 11:30am and there was already an insane line just to get in. Then once they opened the doors other groups of people completely ignore the line outside and just start rushing in. They're in absolutely no rush to seat you so don't have any hope that they'll let you in early. Once you're seated the service is pretty fast. The schnitzel is quite large and good for sharing. I had the original schnitzel with pork. It was thin and crispy but under seasoned in my opinion. The potato salad was the star for me I could have had one all to myself. It was creamy, a little sweet, and tangy. I also tried the soup with clear beef broth and sliced pancakes. Nothing memorable but a nice clean soup if you're in the mood.

Schübel-Auer is a "Heuriger", which in German means "Winery"... or in this sense "Wine Garden"…read more There are dozens of these wine gardens in the outer areas of Vienna...I highly recommend visiting at least one! Schübel-Auer is easy to get to: take Tram D heading north all the way to the end will drop you in front at the Nußdorf Beethovengang stop. This will also get you an interesting look at the less glamorous side of Vienna for the everyday locals. (Next door is another Heuriger called Kierlinger, but I didn't a chance to visit this one) Mostly locals, with a just a few business tourists. All the staff did speak pretty good English. Rick Steve's guidebooks recommend this Heuriger, so they're probably prepared for tourists. First, find the food counter, you'll find items labeled in German and English. We got there later, after 8pm, so the selection wasn't as good, but still good enough. Figure about €10-15 per person, depending if your appetite. I learned the hard way that the pastrami was served cold, but it was till pretty good. Nothing fancy, but everything we picked was good. Second, grab a table, any free table. A waiter will come up for drink orders, aka wine order. Typically there's only 2-4 choices. But the best part is, its cheap! A half liter is only €6-7, or a glass for €1.70. Try doing a 50/50 mix with white wine and mineral water: "Gespritzer", which is popular among the locals. Third, eat, drink, and relax...

Our intent was to go to a heurigen, but we had left the name and address in the hotel. We decided…read moreto head to Nussdorf and take our chances on one. We got on the D tram and rode to the end of the line. From the tram stop you can see the Schübel-Auer sign. It was very busy and there wasn't anyone to seat people so we just grabbed an empty table. Inside they have a food case with a variety of meats, side dishes, and desserts. We grabbed a tray and cutlery and napkins then stood near the food. The women behind the counter dish up the food for you then weigh it to determine the price. You pay them, then take the food to your table. All of the food we ordered was tasty and seemed homemade. It also was a good value. The liter of house wine was very nice. The wine is ordered from the waiter who you also pay. A very special time on a nice evening. And a must do when in Vienna.
