Really friendly, authentic winery - the first winery in Ramona! Some of the vines go back to the 1950s, and the winemaker John planted his first vines 30 years ago after he acquired the property. I really enjoyed hanging out and talking with John as I enjoyed my wine-tasting (only $10). We shared a love of Baja and the wines of Valle de Guadalupe, so it was fun to talk about restaurants, wines, and was excited to learn that they host overnight wine-tasting bus trips down to Baja/Valle, staying at La Fonda. Would love to do that with them sometime. More info on their website. I tried the Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc/Chenin Blanc, Harvest Red (a blend of Cabernet and Granache), Merlot and their gold medal winning Cabernet Sauvignon. My favorite was the Cab, and I got a bottle of that, although I liked the Harvest Red, too. They often have special events, and today, they were setting up for a band to play 1-4 pm, and were going to be making pizzas. Wish I could have stayed longer! read more

" Free Relaxing Summer Concert Series " Once again we visited the Schwaesdall Winery in Ramona Wine country this weekend and had a great relaxing day listening to a 3 hour Free concert by the Rhythm Express Band. At these Free concerts, customers may bring their own snacks to enjoy during the concert, or you can purchase a custom made fresh artisan home made pizza of your choice which is delivered by Kara. Kara is a Schwaesdall family member who is so friendly and nice, as she hustles all over the Winery taking orders, she helps making the orders, and she delivers orders. She is AWESOME ! The Winery also has many fine wines for purchase, as well as water and sodas that you can enjoy during the concert. It is really fun and cool to walk around the winery looking at all of the rustic antiques from Trucks, Statues, and Farm & Winery equipment hanging everywhere. I really felt at home here, we go to Napa/Sonoma three times a year and have done Paso Robles/Santa Barbara and Temecula wine tastings. This has truly been one of the most genuine, unpretentious, warm and friendliest places I have ever visited. Such a gem in Ramona, I encourage everyone to experience it and visit Johnny and his wife, their tasting is a steal for only ten dollars. My mother liked the zinfandel and bought a bottle. It was ok. We love the smaller wineries and the location of this one (less than 20 minutes from our house) was great. The owner was a bit too much caught up in his football game to really pay attention to us and the amount of each wine he gave for tasting was really small. To make up for it, there were a lot of wines to be tasted. The wines were decent, but nothing amazing. We took home a late harvest Zinfandel that was a bit more unique. Sweet AND bold! Worth a visit for sure. read more

I purchased tickets to the winery anniversary event this year. The winery seems cool and very down to earth but i fear maybe the anniversary event should only be opened to close family and friends, i had no idea i was purchasing tickets to a wedding anniversary and a collection for funds would come around on top of my ticket purchase for a wine event with music. In the future, i don't think the event should be sold as a music and wine thing but rather just keep it intimate for close friends and family. read more

Visited here recently with friends (locals). We have all agreed: This place is too loud, too dirty, no class, and mediocre wines - at best. Every wines had an obvious flaw, so we didn't buy anything. We didn't dare attempt to eat anything. Though the staff weren't too awful, probably trying to make up for their lack of knowledge. I know they attempted to make the environment appear "antique-y" or "arts-y" but it look more like a fun junk yard. You should never attempt this unless you have extensive "antique-y" or "arts'y" knowledge or education. I cannot imagine having to live nearby - the trash this place attracts and the caterwauling.....! This definitely didn't have the feel of a winery. It felt more like a place where sad people go to drink and make a lot of noise. read more

Every "wine country" that I've visited has a "get you drunk" winery (whether that's the intention or not). At Schwaesdall Winery, for $8 (and yes, you can keep the glass), you can taste up to 13(!) different wines. And I'm not talking about skimpy pours here... The first time that we visited here, we made the mistake of paying for separate tastes, and I had to ask my boyfriend to drive when we left. I'd put Schwaesdall in the same category as Witch Creek, in that it's a fun tasting room (great hostess, fun crowd, and a hay bale roof), but we weren't overly impressed with most of the wines. Some of the reds were pretty good, and when we were there, they were pouring a sweet Zin that could easily have been categorized as a "late harvest" Zin or a dessert wine. It's definitely worth checking out if you haven't been here before, but if your wine tasting time is limited, I'd make some of the other tasting rooms a priority over this one. read more

John and Shirley Schwaesdall are truly 2 of the nicest and warm hearted people I have met in a long time. I just got back from a trip to Guadalupe Valley that they sponsor twice a year. They work there tails off on this trip and make sure that everyone is taken care off. It was so much fun and what a great group of people. I've been a serious wine drinker for 20 years and have been to 100's of wineries all over CA, OR and WA. I have to agree with another reviewer that said the wines are flawed. Every one I tasted was "off" in some way. The straw bale structure that serves as the tasting room was very cool in spite of the poor quality wine. read more

You will enjoy a trip to this winery...even just to meet the owners John and Shirley! They are so much fun and very hospitable. They have great parties and plan all kinds of day trips and weekend trips throughout San Diego and Mexico all surrounding wine. They are a blast and have a very quaint little winery. John makes a number of varietals that are tasty. The last time we bought a nice white and a port....both were very good. Moderately priced too. read more

the owners were very nice. took the time to chit chat with us and talk to us about the other wineries in the area. John actually recommended a new winery for us to check out. They didn't rush us with the wine tasting, which i enjoyed. I was able to talk about each of the wines with my friend before moving on to the next tasting. the tasting was 8 dollars and we were able to taste about 8 wines and keep the logo glass. I think they change up the ones the offer for tasting daily. they keep a white board on which ones that offer for tasting. the pricing for bottles weren't bad either. My friend was able to get a white zin for 8 dollars. I'm already planning my next visit for when my family comes to visit. My personal favorite was a smokey merlot! delicious!!! I would recommend this place to as many people as I can. The website seemed a little outdated to how the place is now. I asked them about it and they said they are updated their website. Until then I would suggest driving to the place personally and checking the place out and not judging it by the website. read more

Funky property loaded with antiques, rusted out machinery, eclectic collections of posters, art, harmonicas, etc. Most of the wines we tasted we heavy on the acidic/tannin side, even a couple that were of 2013-2015 vintage. I went wine tasting here and I think you try about ten wines. I ejoyed them all, especially the dessert wines. The owner is friendly and pleasant. The building you do the wine tasting in is very nice and has an old Italian vibe with something like 12 inch thick walls. If you want to keep the glass it's $8 total. They also have canned goods that are tasty but a little pricey. I had a very nice experience here. They are open on weekends for wine tasting and I will definitely bring friends here when they come to town. read more
