I grew up eating Schoop hamburgers and having green rivers - and moving back to the region I was excited to have them nearby. However, after having many smash burgers in my life - this place needs something new. I'm finding the buns they use soaks up all the condiments and when your burger is well done - like they always cook it - it leads to having a dry hamburger. I would have them add more salt to the burgers, create their own signature sauce and get some new buns. Can't say anything about the food. Two of us sat down, ordered our drinks and looked at the menu. When I saw the prices, $15 for a double hamburger, $5 for an order of fries and $4 for a soft drink we drank our soft drinks and left. Our bill would have been including tax and tip, nearly $65 for lunch. If we were in downtown Chicago, I might have expected something like that but we were in a small town in Northwest Indiana. Just the 2 sodas alone with tax and a below average tip was $10. That in our opinion was ridiculous. That explains why at lunch time we were nearly the only ones in there. I was in the area and wanted a burger so I decided to stop here. I did not read any prior reviews before making my decision. I started to leave once I read some of those reviews however I stayed. Went to use restroom to wash my hands. It smelled fine but the divider had some rust, mildew action going on. They need to address this yesterday. The dryer does not properly dry your hands. While walking to and from the restroom I noticed a fry, napkin, paper on the floor. The server was nice, friendly. The place was almost empty. The food tasted good, decent to me. Decided I want to bring my family out to eat but didn't know we would walk into a place we didn't feel welcomed at. The waiter 'Missy' not sure if that's her name but she had blush all over her face and nose like a anime character. There were spider webs everywhere. When a white family walks in they greet them with smiles. The waiter forgot about us (even though we were sitting right upfront) and words came out her mouth were 'oh I forgot them'.. maybe that's when I should've got my family up and left but tried to allow the kids to enjoy themselves since it was out family day. Not overly thrilled which is sad to report because I have been watching these places throughout since moving to the area. They seem rather appealing from the curbside. Presented with the opportunity this evening we ventured in. I like the old dinner decor. They weren't very busy as the wait staff was all hunkered around the center station, Periodically tending to closing duties. We were the only ones eating in the facility tonight. I was reading the reviews and rather surprised by the low stars. Then I started taking it all in and identifying what other members were pointing out as pro's. & cons. First let me tell you that if you are naturally hot then this is the place for you. The climate control pendulum was swinging full on cold, I mean so cold it was uncomfortable. Looking over the menu the pricing seemed rather steep. Approached by our young waitress, I asked what was the signature burger? I followed the recommendation and ordered the recommended burger. I was rather disappointed with what was served to me. For a $10 burger, I would have certainly expected a better presentation. Both of our orders were very sloppily served. Don't get me wrong, I love a great sloppy bring a bib style burger, but this was just disappointing. My girlfriends burger had 1 skimpy leaf of lettuce applied. I don't quite understand why the burgers we ordered were placed over the utensils in the baskets. These burgers remind me of those coming from Steak & Shake in fact this place shares other similarities to the Steak and Shake decor which is cool. It would have been far better with a little TLC. The floors were dirty and a visit to the men's room proved to be challenging. The floors were very damp and slippery as I lost my footing entering. If there is one point I have never understood, it is we as a society are so concerned about germs being transferred with the use of paper products and the dispensary of such, so in place we put these air blowers that do nothing more that take the water from our hands and introduce them to the floor creating a slip hazard. Interesting trade off. After leaving the bathroom I felt I needed a shower. It was pretty dirty. At the conclusion of our meal, 2 burgers and an order of fries was a steep $31. Equivocally speaking the same exact meal would've only ran me about $15 at the local steak and shake. I have been to the Burgerhause down the street and paid $9.00 for an all around better burger. Now I wasn't looking for or expecting the premium burger at a McDonald's price either. That being said you need to consider the value for the money invested. I personally don't feel the value is here. What I do see is facility hiring high school kids(low wage & entry level) with inadequate application to maintain a business model that supports the menu and pricing structure. I read other reviews indicating a better experience at other locations and while the pricing may not change, I'd like to see whether or not the value for my dollar is consistent with each location before ruling the franchise out entirely. For a place with 2 only reviews as I am writing this right now, the reviews provide a best-worst case scenario of 4 stars and 1 star. I think it belongs somewhere in the middle. We were driving through NW Indiana on the way to a family get-together when we stopped here for lunch. Schoop's is a diner and appears to be promoting its burgers as their primary menu item, though their menu is much larger than that. We seated ourselves and thought it was lunchtime during peak Christmas shopping time along Indianapolis Blvd/Wicker Ave., there was plenty of room inside. We got our menus immediately. We were going to try the chili but asked for a sample from the waitress. My wife found it too spicy. I found the meat and beans too bland, but there was a spicy aftertaste, so neither of us went for it. The place still has that old 50s feel to it and it appears to be a local hangout for older folks. Each table has its own mini jukebox, though I don't think they work. Still, it was funny to see my kids look at it and wonder how the thing works or if it "streams" music if you push the buttons. Silly kids, that was back in the days of vinyl! When I was your age.... In the end, I chose a Maxwell-style Polish sausage and my older son and wife both got burgers. Service was about average - not slow but not like a fast casual place either. Schoop's makes thin but very flavorful burgers, comparable to Meatheads or Smashburger in quality. While my Polish was good, I would probably go for a burger here on my next visit. The fries were good and the onion rings were thick and crisp, just the way I like them. By far my favorite burger stop in NWI. The "Mickey" with your choice of toppings is the perfect lunchtime food. I ask for extra tomatoes and get the oldest ugliest flattest most tasteless tomatoes I have ever seen.
