I am not a cook and you don't have to be I learned coming here for meatloaf is great and in the summer time shish ka bobs marinated in luscious sauces such as teriyaki and or buttery garlic herbs. The customer service is the best with fresh faced staff members ready to answer your questions and treat you with first hand care like you're the only one in the store. Fresh coffee ready and hot soup after you make your circle past the cranberry and walnut bread and more freezers stocked with satiating meats to pick from such as BBQ pulled pork and or various seafood items. My choice is the tuna steaks and scallops. And the deli is available for slicing your favorite cold cuts for a sandwich or buying a fresh salad in there case such as the popular spicy pasta salad or some marshmellow fluff dessert of some kind such as my sweet tooth kick in with the pistacho pudding and orange fluff. There is Welches festivities at the local fair grounds seasonal and grilled to bring out the steak sandwiches as the Saturday mornings bring to a sunny warm weekend in St. John, IN. The smoker in the back is smoking throughout the week dog bones and more. Enjoy the ambiance throughout the middle of the week with happy hour on Wednesdays. Welches location is in a soft and quaint corner near 93rd and off of a quiet turn light on traffic and stop lights. Just a great little spot to get in and out of in a hurry or convenience with friendly customer service all day. Top off your purchase with a slice of cherry pie and chocolate covers berries for dad or the kiddos. For me I end my stop and shop experience with the sweet heat beef jerky right at the register. People behind the counter have changed--not customer service oriented--picking up meat with bare hands after touching hair and face--and indignant when requested that sanitary methods be used; many beards and hair with no covering; simple request refused because "too busy." I've gone here for many years, people are very polite, they have a selection of different goods. They carry meat and lunch meat, but they also have some canned and boxed goods as well as some fresh vegetables. It's nice to be able to go somewhere and quickly grab a few items to make a quick dinner. In the summer I think it's Saturday and Sunday. They have a grill outside and they will make grilled steak sandwiches and perhaps hotdogs? I have no idea what else they serve because I always get the steak sandwich! It is very tasty. read more

I was in there today, Horrible customer service. There was seven guys in the back room behind a glass window and I was waiting for about ten minutes to be served, there was one lady being served and one old guy serving her. Then three other customers came in and the all ran out to serve them and when I said I was next this tall rude ass told me they were here first and someone else would help me. I think he thought I was with the other customer. So I spoke up again and said I was standing here for ten minutes, the other customers even said that I was here first. Then the big tall guy said someone else will help him and dismissed me. WTF if I want crappy service I will go to stracks and get crappy service there and crappy meat. This is a great little grocery store and deli. Competitive prices that you would expect from a big chain store but with all the qualities of the small hometown store. This is one of the few places that I'll buy my steaks and ribs from and the quality of the meat is always much better than other options in Saint John. They also have a grilling area outside the store front on the weekends where you can stop on your way in or out and pick up some great steak sandwiches, along with hamburgers and hot dogs. I would also suggest trying their wide selection of pre-cooked "homemade" meals. Very convenient for anyone who is in the go a lot and they are priced just right and contain very large portions. Before YELP or any social media, you could ask anyone in Lake County, IN where the best place to buy steaks and they would tell you to go to stop and shop in St. John. A family owned business since...well, way before I was born, they have been serving the community with good eats and friendly smiles. These are the best ribs in the region, and so far, any place I've had ribs (sorry, Memphis -- I just wasn't impressed). Any of their in-house bread/rolls are great too. 4 stars instead of 5, because I think they're just a bit too pricey. This place is consistently voted best of the Region--with good reason! My fiancee calls this place a meat emporium...It's all that and more. We come here on weekend when we plan to grill for our cuts of meat. I've had regular and stuffed pork chops (delicious), baby back ribs, ribeye steaks, hademade sausages/brats, and their marinated chicken (southwest is my fav). All are definite winners. Not a bad cut of meat in the place! They also sell frozen packaged meals, like pulled pork, italian beef, etc. Made there, all you have to do is bring it home and heat it up. Convenient and great value for the prices. They also bring in homemade peroghies from some place in Whiting (home of Peroghi Fest)...Try the spinach and cheese! I could go on and on...They have meat sticks and beef jerkey too. So flavorful, so fresh! Addictive! All of the employees actually seem happy to work there too! It gets crowded in the summer, but their staff are quick, so don't be turned off by the crowds. This is genuinely one-stop shopping. You can get produce, spices, condiments, desserts, side dishes and salads (separate counter), snacks, and the main course! There are not enough good things to say about this place. Always treated fair and with high respect. The staff is amazing, they will answer any question that you may have. The deli and meats are amazing. This place will not disappoint. Just one small complaint and it was not enough to lower the rating, check the dates on the some of the pre-packaged foods. Im so sad to say that something must have changed in the last year or two...its very hit or miss now. I still shop here on rare occasion but dont find the quality or freshness to be the same as it used to be...i even once bought rancid smelling chicken from here which was wrapped up for me BY THE MANAGER ON DUTY...HOW COULD HE HAVE NOT SMELLED THAT?? Turns out, they were having problems with their cooler for a couple days but when i bought the rancid chicken back to them, the same manager was selling other customers chicken from the same cooler =/ i tend to come here more in the summer when the turnover is high and ONLY if the meat in the coolers looks fresh..so sad read more

I've been here a couple time since I discovered it was hiding behind the other shops. I have gotten the meatloaf (LOVED), the parmesan garlic pork chops (they weren't bad, but not for me) and various steaks (great cuts!). I have not gotten any of the frozen soups or meals, I am sure I'll get those in the winter. Hoping the Italian beef is good! But let me go back to that meatloaf for a second. I make a pretty good meatloaf myself. Hubby's never complained, it's always full of flavor and juicy. I usually spend about as much on meat as I did on the already prepared meatloaf. This meatloaf was amazing! I don't know what they put into it, but it was delicious, tender, juicy, not greasy, flavorful, like actual savory meat, not over seasoned flavor. So good! I've also gotten the jerky, decent price compared to other places. Cajun is my fav so far. My only meh about the place and I didn't take a star away for this b/c honestly I go to a butcher shop for the meat, not for the frozen pierogi or pastas, but their prices for those were a couple dollars more than I've seen at other small grocery stores or butcher shops. Trying to find a good place for hamburger meat, I tried Welch's. Since I live just down the street, I gave this store 6 tries to get it right, they never did. My first visit result was pretty decent hamburger. So I went back for another try. Bought a roast and when I got home it smelled so bad I had to throw it out. To give them every opportunity, I went back four more times. One visit resulted in a decent steak, the other three times were like the second visit, all meat had to be thrown out when I got home. I will not eat meat that is brown and smells bad. Also, while browsing the shelves on my first visit, I noticed that some of their soda was out of date (freshness), when I told the woman at the checkout counter she looked at me like I just called her a name. This was over a year ago and I have not, and will not, go back. For the money I wasted here, I might as well have kept shopping at Stracks. read more

We used to buy from Triumphs in Richton Park until Bob retired and they closed. We discovered Welchs and have been purchasing not only meats but even prepared foods ever since. Customer service has always been excellent and they accommodate customers with the way they cut or package the foods. We get the package deals at least twice every summer because we like to grill. If you're a Vienna Beef hot dog person you're gonna love their hot dogs, you can get burgers in 3/1 or 4/1 combinations, thick cut bacon (it's own food group), various different types of marinated chicken or sirloin strip steaks, just to name a few. Go on a weekend when they have the grill going outside and get a steak sandwich, you won't be disappointed. We used to go here all the time, but the quality has gone down hill. Their ground beef is a good example. The fat content has definitely went up. I can barely make a burger on the grill without having a huge amount of flare ups. Also the potato salad used to really good now it is about the same as the market across the street. The meats are very good and very fresh. They have a variety of other products like fresh baked bread and daily soups that are great. Their jerky is homemade and available in a variety of flavors. It's basically a butcher shop. When I go to the meat counter I get very prompt service. However when I go to the deli section more often than not I am waiting for an employee to come over to help me. It has happened repeatedly. I do love the little old lady at the register she is the best and always puts the customer first. The inside of the store is very clean the walkway outside could use a good power wash though. All in all its a ma and pa shop and I love going!!! read more

We have been shopping at Welch's for about 4 years now and the quality and price have always been the best. This past year it has begun to decline like crazy. The meat quality is low. There selection of frozen Italian Beef for sandwiches has become nothing but tasteless mush.
