First of all I'd like to state my feedback. Drop the politics. I realize that some people have political views that do not match with mine. But to have to stare at Trump signs while eating is not ok. My family and I ordered a sloppy Joe, Mozzarella sticks, salad, and a 16" cheese pizza. Sloppy Joe was great, the bun tasted a little old though. Pizza was... mediocre at best. A unique setting - a high school cafeteria turned into a friendly family restaurant- filled with memorabilia, almost 75 years of class photos - with a surprisingly wide range of choices on the menu, and good food and friendly service. If you are riding from Hancock to Cumberland, as we were, it's the perfect lunch spot, right off the trail, at Lock 70. Great stopover lunch if you are on the C&O and need some energy before the last 18 mile push into Cumberland. Very reasonable pricing and amazing family owned business that is community based. Everything is made to order. The fries were piping hot and the burger was simply made, but was packed to give me enough energy for the last part of my journey to Cumberland on the C&O. The guidebook I used does not list this place, but is definitely a good stopover option for all trailgoers. read more

What an absolutely cool place this could be.... This restaurant is well positioned along the C&O Canal, providing the biking sojourner with a much needed break and a hearty, inexpensive meal. The food was good, however the racist claptrap posted both outside and inside the restaurant made my stomach turn. I wouldn't think that such postings make much business sense considering the diverse, cosmopolitan, and educated (ironic given the setting) crowd of bikers that must flow through on a regular basis. My advice to the owners of the Schoolhouse Kitchen is to embrace the larger world and dump the "White Genocide" nonsense. Your restaurant is sorely needed along the trail, but let's leave the bigotry back where it belongs: the 19th century. read more

I've actually eaten here and found the food to be unappealing. Nothing beyond some basic sandwiches and burgers sort of thing. The restaurant itself is very hokey. There's also cringe worthy flyers in the window that talk about how white America is being overtaken. Yikes! It's sad really. It is really cheap. But you get what you pay for. read more

I can't believe this place has been reviewed so rarely and so blandly! It is absolutely perfect in the midst of a long bike ride. It is a very easy ride from the C&O canal trail. One minute and lovely. The food is just what you want in the midst of the long cycling day: quick and yummy Americana. I had a great grilled cheese sandwich and a side of super homemade macaroni salad. My husband had a delicious crab cake sandwich. Let me make this clear, when we make crab cakes we use the very expensive lump. We were very satisfied with this crab cake and it was only $4.00!! Everyone was so friendly. If you are going from Little Orleans, like we were, to Cumberland, it is perfect for lunch. If you are going from Cumberland, it is a great breakfast stop. Either way, it is great. We aren't big on stopping in the midst of a ride. This is a must. read more

What a strange strange place. I stopped here on a long bike trip along the canal (it seemed to be the only good place to stop for a gatorade that morning). When I heard the name I was looking for a small old timey building. It turns out to be a fairly modern shut down high school. The restaurant is was not air conditioned, but it did have ice cold beverages. I can't really speak to the food. The building is also home to an vintage car shop and a hair salon. Very interesting little road stop, but certainly not worth a special trip. There was also a cute cat! read more

Great stop for cyclists, or anyone. Very cycling friendly. Located at the Oldtown School, which closed its doors to students in 2000. No big sign out front, so be careful not to miss. Simple, home cooked menu of all-American fare. I felt right like I was back in school, eating in the old cafeteria, with much of the memorabilia surrounding me, including the school chairs. I had a simple grilled cheese with a side of macaroni salad - just water to drink and my bill was $3.60. Well, there you go....can't beat that! Highly recommend if biking on the canal, or driving on the road. Also about the only place to stop and eat between Paw Paw and Cumberland, so take advantage! read more

The schoolhouse is definitely one of a kind. It will take you back to elementary school cafeteria days, only much smaller. The room is filled with every graduating class picture, old memorabilia, tons of books, and a bulletin board full of ads for local side jobs/ sales. The sweet tea was good. I ordered the equivalent of a Dairy Queen chicken basket. The food was pretty greasy and I couldn't eat much of it. I probably should have gotten a burger! read more

The hamburger and fries were great for $5. I asked for no cheese and the blonde teen working thought "-cheese" meant to add cheese. Absolutely dumbfounding and I just ate it with the cheese. She was also rude when I went to pay. Great use of an abandoned school though. read more

They are open 8am-8pm everyday and are bike friendly. They didn't appear to take credit cards, but they have an ATM there. It seems that about half their customers are biking off the canal path. Food is very inexpensive. $5/person is fine unless you're getting appetizers and desserts. They have baked desserts and lots of ice cream novelties. read more

A biking oasis just off the canal. Absolutely a MUST! Great food. Great prices. Great staff. Close to towpath. Very little traffic. Plenty of parking for bikes and cars. Tons of tables. Bathrooms. Plenty of selections on the menu. Gatorade, water and other drinks available. We were just there on Sunday. Gets better every time! read more

We took 31 of our Seniors here for a dinner trip. Even though they were short staffed, they did a super job getting everything completed and on the tables. The atmosphere was great and several of our members (growing up in the area) had a great time trying to find someone they knew on the senior pictures. They also had several books on the shelves for people to take home if they wished. We enjoyed our time here. Kudos to the staff. We will be back and I highly recommend you stop in if you are looking for great food. read more

Please allow me to tell you that Larry at the Schoolhouse Kitchen saved the life of my son and grandson on this past Sunday evening. It was suddenly cold, rainy and very brisk wind gusts. My son and grandson had been on the bicycle trail for 2 days from PA headed to WV. The weather took a sudden turn and they found themselves on the dark, cold, wet, windy trail. They were far from civilization and then they got separated from each other! My grandson found his way to the schoolhouse kitchen. Because cell phone coverage is so sparse in this region, my son and grandson were not able to communicate. My grandson ended up at the Schoolhouse kitchen with Larry being the most wonderful host possible! He loaned his telephone to my grandson who then called his mom who then called us (we were in route to Oldtown). We were able to get a text to our son who was on the trail in the dark windy rain, trying to find his son who had been right behind him and then was no longer there. Our son then went to the Schoolhouse Restaurant and was reunited with our grandson, Hallelujah! Larry had washed and dried their clothes, kept the kitchen open until we could get there from 102 miles away, and had even loaned my son his truck to go back to the trail where he had disconnected the bike trailer in order to be less encumbered in his search for our grandson! I THANK GOD for the happy ending of this story and for LARRY and his incredible heart of compassion for these wayfarers! I look forward to visiting the Schoolhouse Kitchen one day when the weather is beautiful and I'll look forward to hugging Larry again one day soon! read more
