This place is amazing and very affordable. The owner is a super sweet lady that goes out of her way to please.

What an absolutely cool place this could be.... This restaurant is well positioned along the C&O Canal, providing the biking sojourner with a much needed break and a hearty, inexpensive meal. The food was good, however the racist claptrap posted both outside and inside the restaurant made my stomach turn. I wouldn't think that such postings make much business sense considering the diverse, cosmopolitan, and educated (ironic given the setting) crowd of bikers that must flow through on a regular basis. My advice to the owners of the Schoolhouse Kitchen is to embrace the larger world and dump the "White Genocide" nonsense. Your restaurant is sorely needed along the trail, but let's leave the bigotry back where it belongs: the 19th century.

This is the only sign....but look for the bikes!

Food was good but could have better dessert options. A good place to grab a bite to eat.

Great stopover lunch if you are on the C&O and need some energy before the last 18 mile push into Cumberland.

Cute little road side restaurant with ample parking. If…read moreyou are passing by, I would definitely stop by for a quick meal. They are known for their biscuits and burgers. So that what we tried. They serve breakfast all day and offer carry out. Walking in, it was the standard, small town welcome. Everyone (staff and patrons) looks at you and stares. Even after you say hello, they just stare at you. As a person of color who has been refused service in a small town restaurant (Lynchburg VA) I get really self conscious. I was not sure if was order up or seat yourself. There were no signs or staff instructions. Luckily our friendly and lovely waitress ( Mickey) acknowledged my wife and I. We got our seat and ordered. Lots of seating options. Can seat groups of up to 6. The menu has lots of options, but even more are posted on the wall...they have something for everyone. The portions are big and prices are very decent. Our waitress was friendly but slow only because she was the only one in the front and the place was packed it took over an hour to get our food. Having time to sit ana wait for our food. It appeared that the kitchen staff was new and the morning staff ended their shift as we got there. So with lack of proper turn over, there was a bit of confusion. The food was OK. Nothing to spectacular but not bad or poor quality. They had scrapple which is hard to find.

I ordered the seafood special and there was nothing special. Frozen bay scallops, frozen small shrimp, and frozen spinach in a diluted sauce. It would have been better to ordered buttered noodles. Drinks were fine, stocked bar, friendly employees. Poor food and not worth the $.

A guy I assumed was the owner or manager was sitting at the bar watching TV and doing a crossword puzzle. A few minutes later we ordered a burger (well done) and a blackened salmon wrap. And then we waited. And waited. At 3:42pm I asked about the food, noting how long we were waiting. The waitress said it was coming right up (our waitress was kind and understanding). However, the owner grumbled at me that "the food is cooked to order." Ok. Great. I told the owner we only ordered a burger and a wrap and that doesn't take almost 40 minutes cooked to order, especially considering the place was empty. The owner got up and started talking back aggressively and in an irritated tone about how we didn't wait that long. I repeated that it doesn't take that long to cook a burger. I asked if he treated all his customers like this. If the owner is reading this: Here's a tip. Get off your behind and manage the restaurant. Don't blame the customer when the cook takes forever. Instead say, "I'm sorry it took so long we will get right on that" and then pop back in the kitchen to see what is happening. I'm so sorry that customers interrupted your important crossword puzzle. My "well done" burger was burned. I wanted it cooked through not a piece of charcoal. Not good. And my wife's salmon wrap did not have a lot of salmon. For what we got, it was very expensive. The waitress was excellent, but the service from the cook and management was abysmal. We will not be going back there again, which is too bad because as locals have enjoyed going to City Lights during the summer to sit on the patio for dinner.
