This is a great, hole in the wall restaurant and bar. The place has ample seating along with a small bar. My fiancé got the fried chicken and it was so good. I got the fricken chicken sandwich and it was just OK. We both got two pieces of pie/cake and omg, all of it was AMAZING. Our server, Finn, was so nice and attentive. Lastly, as someone who does not drink, I was impressed and happy they had a non-alcoholic beer option. We highly recommend stopping by!

Nice people and very welcome. Visit these place if you're around and the food is delicious not to forget a drink to top up the meal. And by the way they sell liquor, beer and wine

Mixed feelings with my initial visit. There were hardly any people in the restaurant after the lunch rush but it took an extremely long time for food to come out - 40 minutes or so? I asked for the Smokehouse burger and, while it was delicious, it didn't come with the sauce the menu said it would have. I should have said something when I got it (a fault on my part) but part of me also saw the burger as like a signature item; the description on the menu was what I expected, so I'm not sure where something went wrong. Their fries were amazing. The turtle cheesecake was the bomb, as well. I feel like this could have been a really good experience (probably 4 stars) but between the long wait and not technically getting what I ordered, I feel like something was kinda lost.

This is such a great place. Honestly I was skeptical was it was kind of in the middle of nowhere, hence the "lost river" I guess but anyway. The staff was friendly, the food was incredible. I had the honey garlic pork chops and my hubs had the liver and onions and they were both phenomenal. The drinks were great too. We are in the bar area but the restaurant part looked nice too. I highly recommend this place if you are ever in Lost City, WV. If I could give more stars I would.

The boxed mashed potatoes

My son really enjoyed his meal of meatloaf, mashed potatoes (kinda) and green beans. I also got him a cheesecake which he enjoyed. I did like my side salad with the balsamic vinaigrette. I order a sirloin rare. Not only did I get medium well someone even cut into it to look inside. Apparently they put the wrong steak in the wrong to go container. The green beans are salt overload. The mashed potatoes is the part that gets me the most. The are instant mashed potatoes. If you are gonna make someone pay that much they damn well better be fresh mashed potatoes. This is a meal my teenage kids would have put together. I'm eating it because I'm hungry and I'm from out of town so this is all I have for dinner and they are too far down this winding mountain. But damn is it disappointing. I would have given it one star if it wasn't for the fact my 12 year old liked his.

pesto torteilini

We stopped in because we were in the area. This is amazing. Staff was so friendly. Salad was so fresh. Everything looked good. The tortellini with pesto was perfect. Sat on the screened porch was so nice end of day. Definitely make this a stop if you are going through this part of the country.

A group of 16 of us booked for the weekend and I honestly can't think of enough great things to say. Seriously, everything about this place was AMAZING! I organized the trip, so I got to work with one of the owners, Jesse, to get everything set up. He was helpful, responsive, accommodating, and really kind. I organize a lot for my friends and myself, and this was one of the easiest. Upon arrival we were checked in by the other owner, Gary, who immediately made us feel like we were at home. He gave us a wonderful tour of the property and told us everything we needed to know for a wonderful stay. This property is nestled in the hills of WV and the views are STUNNING! Every space and room is beautifully appointed, really leaning into the upscale rustic vibe you'd expect in a mountain retreat. So many beautiful nooks and crannies to sit and read or play games or just nap. The pool and hot tub are gorgeous and Logan at the pool bar will take amazing care of you! They provide a complimentary breakfast of freshly cooked eggs, meats, and biscuits/scones. The lunch and dinner menus are varied and everything we had was delicious. Our servers, Rain (spelling ??) and Angie were stellar and the ambience was just perfect. Every single one of us left feeling refreshed and we were all sad to leave. Do yourself a favor and make the trek out to Lost River and treat yourself. This place is amazing and I'm already planning my next trip here with my partner.

However, our visit was overshadowed by our concern for the wellbeing of the mini horse at the entrance. As I understand it, horses are social herd animals, so it's quite unfortunate to see this guy living in solitude without companionship. Also, his shelter seemed fairly small, with limited shading, and mostly on a steep hill that was largely unattended to. These were our general observations while visiting. Maybe this pretty pony has another home he visits and is there temporarily to entertain visitors? We couldn't be sure. Regardless, I hope others share in this concern and that the owners consider ways to improve this guy's digs and, ultimately, quality of life.

The Inn at Little Washington lost its third Michelin star in the 2025. The timing coincided with…read moreVirginia's state tourism office declining to pay a reported ~$360,000 fee to expand Michelin coverage into more of the state. Others see it as part of a wider "reset" affecting other longtime three-star spots like Alinea (Chicago) and Masa (New York), which also dropped to two stars at the same time. I'm not completely sure why the slight decline but here's my honest view. The scenic drive from DC through the Virginia countryside sounds breathtaking--rolling hills, charming small towns, glimpses of Blue Ridge Mountains but in actuality all of the turns and hills made myself and friend sick. We had to pull over and gather ourselves. The restaurant itself is gorgeous, filled with artwork, pink, green and gold monkey wallpaper and Victorian tables, and English country style. It's maximalist--opulent without being stuffy. Our waitstaff made the evening extra special for my birthday. They constantly wished me a happy birthday, asked thoughtful questions about my life, shared jokes, and engaged in small talk that felt genuine and personal. Not to mention the menu with my name. Each course on the 7-course tasting menu was beautifully presented. We loved having three menu options to choose from: a new seasonal tasting (always fresh and surprising), Enduring Classics (with signature dishes like the iconic lobster preparations or herb-crusted favorites), and a full vegetarian Good Earth menu with the eggplant course being our favorite. The unlimited warm bread service with fresh butter and flaky sea salt was a simple but perfect touch. The Champagne options were endless (their wine list is legendary, with a massive cellar and expert sommeliers), and they even offered a dedicated book/menu highlighting rare waters from around the world--everything from iceberg sources to unique mineral springs. I've never seen a water book before. Standouts for me was the caviar egg, lamb main course and tomato amuse-bouche. If you're looking for a special occasion spot (birthday, anniversary, or just because), this is it. Four people will run you around $2500 including drinks. Con- I would work on the cocktail menu (the Diana tasted like cough medicine). Bring back the pear dessert and portion sizes from 12 years ago. My main lamb portion was embarrassing. Reviewers see pictures for example sizes. Please offer a dedicated pescatarian menu. Overall, Chef Patrick O'Connell and his team did a great job.

We stayed one night at The Inn at Little Washington and dined at the restaurant during a period of…read moretransition: when we made our reservation, the restaurant held three Michelin stars; by the time of our visit, it had dropped to two. Still, given the reputation, the extensive media coverage, and a total spend just under $5,000 for one night, expectations were understandably high. The arrival experience immediately fell short. The valet area was crowded, so we drove around town briefly and returned--only to find no one at the door. No greeting, no valet, no assistance. When we walked in, the front desk seemed surprised by our arrival. My husband was asked to go back outside to identify our car and luggage. I was offered a welcome cocktail; my husband was not, until someone realized the oversight while showing us around the property. The inn itself is undeniably beautiful, especially decorated for Christmas. The design is rich with detail, and the public spaces are comfortable and inviting. Our Superior Room was also lovely and very comfortable. The minibar is complimentary, which is a nice touch, but it is not refreshed during turndown service--so once you drink the water or ginger beer, you don't receive more unless you ask. We appreciated the welcome letter and snacks waiting in our room. We did have to call for washcloths (though they were ultimately found tucked away), which again pointed to small but noticeable lapses in attention. Dinner was, in terms of food alone, excellent. Each course was beautifully executed and full of flavor. We shared a wine pairing--having learned from experience that two pairings can be excessive--but were surprised to receive just one glass for a $250 pairing, rather than two smaller pours. The tasting sommelier was the most personable and engaging member of the staff that evening. Our biggest disappointment came before dinner at the Monkey Bar. Cocktails are $25, which is fine at this level, but my husband was casually encouraged to change the liquor in his drink, without clear mention of a $35 upcharge. Two pre-dinner drinks came to $88. We also noticed we were not served the truffle popcorn that nearly every other guest around us received--and which features prominently in videos and reviews. It felt less exclusive than arbitrary. Combined with the upselling, it came across as sneaky and surprisingly lowbrow. This leads to the overarching issue: everything felt pro forma. From valet to front desk, tea service, anniversary acknowledgment, turndown, dining choreography--it was all clearly checklist-driven. The motions were executed, but without warmth, personality, or joy. Nothing felt intuitive or genuinely hospitable; nothing surprised or delighted us. The aggressive upselling continued at dinner, including a push for premium bottled water that bordered on silly. At this level, such tactics feel unnecessary and even tacky. Dessert was another letdown. Many guests (and countless videos) reference the iconic pear dessert--an intricate creation that takes days to prepare. It was not available during our visit, and the substitutes were unimaginative and frankly disappointing, reminiscent of upscale chain restaurant desserts rather than a Michelin-level kitchen. This was my fourth Michelin three-star-level experience, and I left feeling that the money would be better spent at a restaurant striving to reach the top rather than one resting on its reputation. Given the chef's bravado in interviews and the volume of press, the experience simply did not live up to the promise. I'm glad I went. I won't go back. For all its beauty and technical competence, The Inn at Little Washington did not surprise me, did not delight me, and ultimately did not feel worth the cost.

And, Yokum's, in business since 1923, and with a family history in the area since the 1830s, is THE hot spot to feed and supply visitors to this beautiful area. It's a casual and reasonably-priced kind of place with historical charm; there's a constant flow of visitors. The General Store offers pretty much anything you would need for a trip to the mountains -- from coonskin hats, to firewood, ice, pantry items, drinks, snacks, and West Virginia souvenirs (including t-shirts, refrigerator magnets, jams and jellies, and so much more). The Grill offers breakfast items (breakfast burritos, bagels, muffins), as well as typical grill items -- burgers, chicken sandwiches, fries, pizza, wraps, etc. Of particular note, they've been named as having the state's "2nd best West Virginia-style hot dogs" on the "50 best hot dog trail." The Grill offers both indoor and a few covered front porch tables. We had, however, visited Yokum's for two very specific reasons -- (1) we had just hiked the Seneca Rocks Trail, and wanted to reward ourselves with ice cream! On that note, we found a freezer with all sorts of ice cream treats in the General Store. My husband opted for a pint of Hershey's Cappuccino Crunch premium ice cream. (We had a freezer for the unconsumed portion!), while I chose a Dove ice cream bar. We later realized that, based on reviews on Yelp, the Grill *might* have offered hand-scooped cones but we hadn't checked. (2) we heard that Yokum's has Wi-Fi, a luxury that wasn't available in the National Recreation Area nor anywhere else for at least ten miles. We were able to sit at one of the indoor tables near the Grill, enjoying our ice creams while utilizing the free wi-fi to send a few texts and to plug in some maps for the next leg of our journey. Also worth noting is that Yokum's has an excellent view of the Seneca Rocks rock formation, is in close proximity to the entrances for the Seneca Rocks Visitors Center and the main hiking trail, has easy access off nearby roads and sufficient free parking, offers a clean restroom, and has some large outdoor signs describing local outdoor attractions. Staff were efficient and friendly enough. Yokum's also runs Yokum's Vacationland, offering a variety of accommodations including cabins, bunkhouses, teepees, a motel, and a campground., as well as Yokum's Stables. We didn't visit either.

It was a long and frustrating day, it took us almost 9 hours to get the car to Elkins and then to get back to our cabin. We always stop here for ice cream anytime we are in the area. There aren't a lot of options but this place has fantastic food and ice cream. Their hot dogs are rated #2 in the state for the official WV hot dog tour that took place a few years ago. Definitely worth a try. The cheese fries are really good, but not good for your figure haha. They have a huge convenience store with thing like milk that you can't get without driving 30-40 minutes. Lots of interesting local items such as honey and jams and jellies as well as some coffee. They also have a huge gift shop with locally made crafts and jewelry as well as shirts and hats and stickers, all the good stuff. Order yourself a hot dog and some ice cream and roam around the store and do some shopping. And if you can find the grumpy cat give him some love.

Great Find In Luray…read more Went hiking with my family in Shenandoah National Park this weekend and overnighted in Luray. We happened across The Chop House by mistake and a lucky one it was! Everything about the meal was fantastic! Our server Pete was terrific. My brother-in-law hit the nail on the head when he said "He was the most unpretentious, informative and friendly server I've run across". Very polite and helpful, you could just tell it made Pete happy to be helpful. The menu is not large, but the dishes we ordered were all top notch. First the Focaccia Bread came and it was just right, a good sigh of things to come. Next the Crab Dip. We are from Annapolis, a crab crazy town on the Chesapeake, where every restaurant has their own "award winning" crab dip, so we are very well acquainted with some of the best, but this one knocked it out of the park. It would win the "Best of Annapolis 2026" if this restaurant was in Annapolis. Next came the Sirloin, at Pete's recommendation. Salted perfectly, and cooked correctly to medium rare, with a side of asparagus cooked to crisp perfection and seasoned with a garlic butter that was just fantastic. We rapped it up with a flight of deserts to share, at Pete's recommendation. Deconstructed Cheese Cake, German Chocolate Cake, Creme Brûlée, and three of their house made ice creams. Again, just Wow. And when the bill came, again a very pleasant surprise. Steak dinner for 4, with cocktails and wine and the bill came to $250. Back in Annapolis that meal would have easily been $400 or more at Lunes Steakhouse, Ruth Chris or the Chart House. My wife and I agreed this meal was better than any we've had at any of these high end resturants. I can't recommend this place highly enough. We'll be back, and nothing against the other servers, but we'll make sure it's on a night Pete is working. Great job Pete and to everyone in the kitchen, just a terrific meal. It was hard to choose from the delicious options but I landed on the catfish and hubby the filet. The drinks were divine sips, crafted expertly and the crab dip was delicately balanced with the crab, seasoning and cheese. The chips were warm and crispy which added great texture to the dip. Hubby's steak was cooked to temp perfectly and he said the mac and cheese was the best he'd ever had! I'm not sure how to describe how good the catfish was, dare I say clean and fresh!
