Lunch menu, bar area
Elizabeth B.

I have been to the guesthouse a couple of times, including dinner in their formal dining room, and most recently lunch. Took a friend who is visiting from out of town, he said his burger was great. My fried fish sandwich was just OK, kind of dry and flavorless to be honest. The menu is very limited, few healthy options. Their prices are pretty much what you would find in downtown DC, so on the high end for the area. Everywhere else I have eaten in Lost River is better and less expensive. Our server, a young woman, was great. We were the only ones there for Saturday lunch. After lunch, we went to have a look at the pool and talked with the poolside bartender. My friend asked some questions and said he'd like to come back with friends to stay for a weekend (note, they are only open on weekends.) It looks like a cool place but there's a lot of apparent deferred maintenance. He asked if we could have a look around and the bartender said, feel free, go on into the clubhouse too. We quickly walked through, and out to a balcony at the far end. We didn't touch anything and were probably there for all of the two minutes, if that. No guests around. We saw one of the owners and my friend said, I hope it's OK that we're having a quick look around. The owner said, actually it's not, it's clearly marked that this area is for guests only. We were really taken aback. Even if that's the case, and we did not see those notices until we were leaving, there are about 10 more gracious ways to handle it. It felt quite rude. Are you in the hospitality business? Do you want to run off future customers? As a result, neither one of us will be going back. This is a small community, and it seems the owners have a reputation. When I mentioned it, two different people said someone had organized a party of 16 friends to go to the bar and the restaurant, where they spent thousands of dollars. I think the friends were all staying there, but the one who organized it lives here so was not an overnight guest. When they went upstairs to the lounge after dinner, the owners told the organizer that he needed to leave. Not only that, the poor white pony in the paddock is being neglected. It does not have a companion, although horses are herd animals. It was literally covered with flies. No fly mask, it looked like there was a large lizard on its face but it was flies. Poor pony was just covered with biting flies, face and body. As a long time horse owner, this was so sad to see. It looks like it did not have adequate shade, and that the paddock needs to be mowed. Looks very uncomfortable. Very sad that apparently this pony is used for marketing, so people can take their photo with it, but is not cared for properly.

The view from our room.

I have never given a review before, but this place was very special. I don't have enough words....

I wish i took more pictures because these don't do this amazing getaway justice. Took a couple of days of much needed rest and spent time in their suite location which was a 1 bedroom with 1.5 bathrooms, mini kitchen (no stove) but refrigerator and microwave with sink and dishes. They had a sauna, pool, restaurant, bar, entertainment area and more. Only 2.5 hrs from DC, this quiet oasis is well worth the drive. The owners were friendly and the location was very relaxing. Also free WiFi which is needed considering you are in the mountains and very little cell hone signal. Definitely will be returning soon!

My fiancé and I had an incredible second weekend getaway to Guesthouse Lost River! Gary & Jesse immediately remembered us from the moment we began checking in, despite us only visiting once before. We have been missing Guesthouse ever since our first visit in April 2018. A weekend at Guesthouse makes us feel so rejuvenated from the immaculate property to the breathtaking West Virginia scenery. For this visit we stayed in the Hobsdon Cabin on the lower level. Our cabin has a recently remodeled bathroom. The cabin has a shared common area and kitchen. And we had our own separate entrance. The cabin felt very private like we were there alone. We were able to enjoy the pool for this visit which was a great pastime. If you enjoy swimming or laying out by the pool, I'd highly recommend coming later in the year for when the pool is open. The pool is stunning and a great way to socialize with other guests. We can't wait to visit the Guesthouse again and plan on coming at least once a year.

My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at The Guest House in Lost River, WV. We immediately fell in love with the place! It's all so breath-taking, the food is good, and the owners are very welcoming. We plan on visiting, again, this Summer. Go! You'll be glad you did.

Certainly I go…read morefor the exceptional beef, but the customer service is amazing and I always learn something new every time I am there. I have heard from many people that their tours and tastings are unbelievable. I cheat a little because I already have a freezer full of their beef and plenty of wine at home, but I think my wife will finally book us for a tour and tasting in the spring. I have never seen a more idyllic setting for a farm, it looks nothing like any of the farms I grew up working on. And for me, I think that is the best part about Ovoka - it is a farm that is unique but no different than many others in that their farm never sleeps, their farmers never truly get a vacation, they earn every penny they get, and unfortunately do not get all the pennies they deserve for the value they provide. Not just value in the sense of the quality of their amazing beef products, but the value they provide for preserving a farming tradition that was once all we had and has unfortunately dwindled, but remains the backbone of our country. This is where your food comes from, not Wegmans or Whole Foods. Before you visit, call to make sure the food truck is open for lunch so that you can take it inside and buy a bottle of wine to wash it down with.

It's awesome to see a woman owned wagyu farm that's only an hour away from home. Touring the farm was pretty cool, even though it was freezing outside. They explained how the farm operates and the different types of cows/cuts. The private dinner was delicious. Our group opted for the premium 3 course menu. The appetizer and entrée were both amazing. The dessert received mixed opinions. After dinner, we stopped by the store and purchased a ton of steaks and hot dogs. Looking forward to going back when its warmer out. Thanks Mel and the Ovoka Farm crew for an amazing experience.

Our daughter's wedding was held June 29, 2024. The venue is beautiful and well layed out. The…read morebeautiful farmhouse accommodated five couples for the bridal party, and the day of the wedding, the Bridesmaids for hair and make up. Food was delicious! Dessert was pies, and they were delicious. The after-wedding bonfire was wonderful where friends and family relaxed with a drink, s'more and snack choices (by bride and groom) provided by the venue. However, there were several issues that we encountered during the day of the wedding, primarily involving the venue's owner. I feel that Leigh Clark, owner and planner, would serve her guests better if she didn't directly deal with them. From the get-go, while trying to corral our guests to the deck area for the ceremony because of rain, she belittled them and was condescending, making facial expressions and rolling her eyes, while using a microphone.... especially for our group photo. Guests mentioned to us that the staff began clearing the hors'doerves well before the guests were called up to the reception. The first issue was with the dozens upon dozens of our homemade cookies. These were outdoors several hours before the 5 pm ceremony.... many of which became soft and crumbling due to the humidity. No food should ever be left outside, uncovered. Tables were set, and water and wine glasses (for the toast) were filled in advance.... making the sparkling wine flat and the water warm. Furthermore, not one server visited tables in my immediate view...the whole barn...to refill water or wine. Red and white wine were to be served. We were also told that the barn would "be cool, trust me," (Leigh Clark). However, one corner fan was not turned on, the other was broken, and all the windows were closed. It was a hot day made worse by no air flow. I went to reach table stains the windows and told them to open them. It did rain right before the ceremony, but there was time during the ceremony to open these windows and create a cross draft. The flow of the evening was rushed and out of order and not what we had requested. The "money" dance was done first when it was expressly stated during the planning stage that the dance must be reserved for the very end of the wedding. At that point, the bouquet and garter toss, as well as the cake cutting, happened in short order. Leigh felt the cake cutting was an insignificant part of the reception despite us saying that it has been a fun tradition in our family. We also paid to have welcome bags set up for guests to take back to their overnight accommodations. They were completely forgotten, which puts me in a predicament of what to do with them. There are no handicap parking spots and no clear parking spaces. The venue needs this desperately, especially to make easy access for the golf cart shuttles. (Gravel can be spraypainted.) Leigh and her limited staff, along with our paid photographer, thought it appropriate to sit at outdoor guest tables to eat. Staff should never take seating away from guests, especially to eat. Ever!!! Sadly, many guests came to us during the reception, informing us that Leigh was rude to them, not knowing who she was. At one point, Leigh became highly agitated with the parking situation and golf cart shuttle accessibility. She was recorded by one guest exclaiming she was "f......g done." I was also told by Leigh as she carted me to the farmhouse to retrieve a pair of shoes that if I was longer than a minute, she would leave me there and I would have to walk back. (In the heat, in my gown.) When we came in Monday to retrieve leftovers, I was told that although the soft pretzels and pepperoni rolls can leave with us, the graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate could not because of food safety issues. With everybody touching both the pretzels and the s'mores, I couldn't see where the food safety issue came into play. We paid for these bonfire snacks and left with half of them.

When I first visited Chantelaire with my parents when we were venue shopping I immediately fell in love. The owner, Leigh, has become a friend of the family due to her playful, but firm attitude towards wedding planning. She knows all. Trust her! Her team knows how to throw one hell of a party! I worked with Caroline (day of coordinator) for about 2-3 months before the actual day. She was such a help. Chanteclaire is an all-inclusive venue, so for 1 price, you are getting the venue (a beautiful, nay, stunning historical barn set with chandeliers), a ceremony space located next to the barn over looking the pond, food (amazing), place settings, tables, chairs, linens, and they have a store room with decor that you are welcome to use, DJ, and planning services. We also had our after party here for an additional charge of a few hundred dollars. This included a massive bonfire with s'mores and they moved our alcohol outside for us. At the time, 2015 (I booked in 2015 and was married in 2017) when we booked they were able to allow BYO alcohol. I am unsure if that is still the case, but WOW did it allow us to save some $$$. The venue throws planning events twice a year once you are booked for you to tour the property, meet some vendors, do your tasting, and touch base with your planning team. At the time, they gave 6 tickets per couple which was great because it allowed each couple to bring their parents. This was incredibly helpful for us because we also threw our rehearsal dinner at Chanteclaire - to make it easy as it was an out of town wedding for our guests (and us). We also rented the two overnight properties for the weekend. One was the cabin and the other the farm house. It was so nice being able to stay close to the venue all weekend. Something to note is that the decor in the basement cocktail area space was recently redone and it is GORGEOUS! I know Leigh plans to do more renovations for the future. A few years ago they had their silo redone and converted it into a bar - it's one of the coolest bars I've ever seen. We had such a blast planning and partying all weekend long! I wish we could do it again!!!
