Huge Scotch collection museum at the Scotch Experience in Edinborough

My wife and I enjoy an occasional Scotch and we really enjoy Scottish history. We decided to tour the nations distilleries and found a wonderful tour with Scholarly Sojourns. Our Guide was Ronnie Berri who also guides independently. Our tour was 11 days by motor coach. We had perhaps another dozen folks on our tour. Every arrangement was made for all of us, from tolls, to meals, to hotels, to tour entrances and of course, to distilleries. The coaches were spotless, modern and very comfortable. Ronnie is not a Scot by blood, but he is a scholar of Scotland, of Scotch and of distilleries. He is also high energy, funny enough to do Stand Up, and also sensitive enough to know how to impart his knowledge so we are able to absorb it. He peaked our interest in the drink, the process, the people and the land of Scotland. The accomodations were in keeping with the spirit of the tour, some for thier age and antiquity, others for their wonderful food, and still others were simply very near one of our destinations but in each case Scolarly Sojourns had vetted them. In 11 days, we toured 22 distilleries, visited 15 restaurants. We actually ate on the bus a few times and we had plenty of time to do some exploring on our own. This was a most remarkable trip. We will return to Scotland we are certain and if we are lucky enough, we will get to visit with Ronni Berri again, and we will tour again with Scholarly Sojourns in another part of the world, we know that as well.

I have been on three scotch whisky tours with Scholarly Sojourns. The first, "Scotch Whisky in Depth," was back in September of 2015. I had such a postive experience on that trip that I joined their "advanced" scotch tour, "Scotch Whisky Connoisseur," in March of 2017. It was sensational, so sensational in fact that I went on that tour again a year later, in March of 2018. Needless to say I thoroughly enjoy the Scholarly Sojourn experience. All three trips delivered exactly what they promised and then some. Common to all three was the whisky expert, Ronnie Berri, who is extremely well-versed in all aspects of the scotch whisky industry and in the history and traditions of Scotland. When time permitted we stopped at monuments and scenic overlooks and Ronnie would share his knowledge of what had transpired at each place. He was patient when we asked questions (I am a retired university professor so I ask a great many questions) and flexible when we wanted to see or do something reasonable "off agenda." He's even answered my questions via email long after our trip had concluded. Also common to all three trips was John, the owner of Scholarly Sojourns, who assumed the role of Director/Coordinator on each of the three tours I attended. John made sure that all of our needs were addressed (for example, at my request he stocked Diet Coke for me on our coach) and that the effects of unforeseen events (they happen on all tours) did not significantly disrupt our time in Scotland. He handled issues resulting from bad weather (it is Scotland after all and weather can be a challenge), accommodation preferences/requirements of the tour participants at our hotels (for example, I have some trouble negotiating stairs and requested and received ground floor rooms when available), health issues of one or more participants, and just about everything else you can imagine with a calm and reassuring professionalism. Finally, our drivers were always friendly (some were even entertaining) and professional. They loaded our luggage and stood watch over our valuables when we ventured away from the coach. All of my experiences with Scholarly Sojourns have been very positive and worth every pound/dollar I have spent with them. I have told John that when his "Whisky on Water" tour has its inaugral voyage that my wife and I will be there. If you are a novice to the the world of scotch then "Scotch Whisky in Depth" will be perfect for you. If you are a bit more advanced and want to taste some truly superb whiskies -- some at distilleries not open to the public (thank you Ronnie), then I recommend the "Scotch Whisky Commoisseur" tour for you. Please note, while the accommodations on the "Scotch in Depth" tour were nice -- clean, comfortable, and often quaint or stately, they did not compare to the accommodations of the "Connoisseur" trips. For those two trips we stayed in castles, castle hotels. or magnificent inns/hotels with spectacular views. I cannot speak to the non-scotch tours run by Scholarly Sojourns; however, from my expereinces with Scholarly Sojourns I can say with confidence that their scotch tours will not disappoint. Bob K.

This is another fantastic MUST SEE Frank Lloyd Wright home…read more After seeing this one, my fiance and I have decided that we will try our very best to go and tour all of Frank's houses. When you pull up to this house, there is a neighborhood that is built around it. Everything preserved though that is on the property, so no need to worry. Sadly, it was raining when we went, but we still were able to have a great experience. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and went quite in depth for each part of the house. I think the tour was about an hour or so. These types of houses are very interesting because while you are being told about how the room was built, how it was used or something else related to Frank or the house, you can truly picture yourself as a member of the family that lived in the house. The tour is so great I'd do it again! Photos attached are from online. No phones allowed so I left mine in the car. Only posting pictures from the outside. See for yourself for the inside!

Our guides were Harvey and Steve, who took us through every part of the house and answered all of our questions. Steve was a patient and knowledgeable guide, and Harvey provided a wealth of stories and anecdotes that added to our appreciation of the house. As an early Wright Usonian, Affleck is well worth a visit, especially in understanding how these houses and plans evolved over time.

I spoke to a park employee when I was there and still wasn't able to get a straight answer. I did find out that if you want to set up a program for kids where they learn about pioneer life, including churning their own butter, then you have to make arrangements ahead of time, and that makes sense. It seems you can wander the grounds and look at the barn and the gardens and the outside of the various buildings from dawn to dusk in good weather. I'm still not clear on whether the museum has regular hours or if you have to call ahead to arrange a tour, though. The nice park employee I spoke to, though, did give me a full tour of one of the auxiliary buildings, between the museum and the barn. They have a really nice hall here that's often rented for weddings and wedding receptions, and they have a whole album of photos you can look at to see people who have used it before. The reception hall is up a flight of stairs, but they have an elevator for handicapped access. I loved this place and plan to go back to explore some more. I may have to borrow a friend's kid for a day and take him or her to one of the programs because they sound like a lot of fun.

The non-profit volunteers have maintained it immaculately and consistent with the Kemph's. The house was owned by the Kemph's, a German American family starting in the 1850s! Both are absolutely wonderful and dedicated to our heritage. I recommend donating money to the Kemph House, a non-profit group.

Curious, my friends and I walked up to the door and saw a sign saying it was open. We knocked on the door and were met with a tour guide who proceeded to give us a private tour of the former UM music professor's house. The Kempfs were a German-American family living in Ann Arbor in the late 1800s (the house was built in 1853). The museum has many original artifacts and the tour guides explained about life in Ann Arbor in the late 1800s and early 1900s (no electricity at first!) One of the items I found really interesting was the baby grand piano in one of the rooms, which the guide explained to be the only piano UM owned at the time. Meaning if the university wanted it for a function they had to take off the legs, move it to the required location, put the legs back on and re-tune, and do the same after the event! The house is not terribly big and the tour was maybe half an hour, but the tour-givers were really great, very nice and enthusiastic and willing to answer all of our questions. I thought it was super-interesting since I love history stuff, and loved learning more about my beloved Ann Arbor before it was the town we know today. If you have some time, I definitely recommend stopping by for a tour! By the way, tours are free but of course they accept donations.

Well worth the time and money whether you live nearby or are visiting from afar…read more My husband and I decided to spend a vacation day in Ann Arbor rather than take a road trip. We are foodies and where a bit overwhelmed by all the places to try when we found this food tour online. The founder, Ani, was our guide and told us a ton about Ann Arbor, past and present, the culture and each venue and tasting. We even learned about the adorable fairy doors along the way. Some places don't open until later but Ani provided recommendations about which ones are worth visiting later on and why. One our favorite stops wasn't a restaurant, it was Fustini's oil and vinegar shop. We also loved the soft porkbelly buns at Miss Kim's. Oh, and a delicious chorizo "burger" at Frita Banditos. Locations vary, so don't have your heart set on an itinerary but I doubt you'll be disappointed! Ani's passion for the business is delightfully contagious so he is great to get to know and spend time with tasting and learning. He sets the standard for other tour guides too. There were a few places that didn't seem quite ready for us, despite Ani arranging ahead, but they pulled it together quickly and everyone treated us well. Oh, and be also gave us cool souvenir hats. Yep, worth it all the way! Give it a whirl!
