Italian hoagie
Kay H.

Pros: do you love Jewish Delis?! If so, this is going to rock your world Cons: None. Well, parking can be a smidge tricky. No more traveling to Ann Arbor to scratch my Ruben itch. These babies are toasted, packed with the good stuff, and staff are great. I also love the ambiance of the location. It's old school, comfy, and fabulous! Truly, it is charming as heck. My hubs tried the Italian hoagie and I got Evan's double dip (corned beef AND pastrami with kraut and 1000Isle on toasted rye). My hubs hoagie was great -the French roll was perfection; really nice chew. My sandwich was glorious! Perfectly toasted and nicely portioned. I also got a slice of banana cake.... It was MAGIC! You cannot find banana cake around here and I hadn't had a slice in probably 25 years. It was as good as my grandma's. A moist sheet pan slice with the most amazing cream cheese frosting. I highly recommend! The Big John is next on our list (my hubs is obsessed with Big John's in Lansing). They were sold out when we visited, but we'll be back! Side note on parking: there are a few spaces along the sidewalk in front. There is also a small parking lot in the back that is shared with other businesses. It wasn't terribly clear where we could park back there so we crossed our fingers and hoped for the best. Additional side note: there's a bakery 2 doors down where their bread is made! Check it out for breads and sweet treats!

Whole size - Pastrami on sour dough with cheddar and mustard.

First time at what is obviously a local favorite for lunch. Fun deli feel with very helpful people to walk you through making a custom sandwich. Half and whole sandwiches are only a dollar apart and a difference in a quarter pound of meat!! I had a pastrami with sour dough and it was heavy with meat. My wife wanted a grilled cheese with ham, and was a bit disappointed it was not melting with cheese. However they both tasted great. Potatoes salad is very flavorful with tons of potatoes! It is had plenty of seating and some parking in front and back, but try to get here before the rush as noon!

This is a delicious deli. The sandwiches were so so good and the sides. We did not try the cakes but they looked amazing. Can't wait to come back.

The Rancher's Roast Beef

One of the best deli's in GR. The Rancher's Roast Beef has all the best savory flavor combinations that will warm you up on a cold January day.

This deli does not disappoint. My husband and I split the Reuben and the corned beef was delicious, but the bread alone nearly stole the show. I loved the broccoli salad as a side, but there were so many amazing options to choose from. Staff was so nice and even brought our food out to us at their adorable street seating. Overall 10/10 and I'll be back very soon.

Pastrami sandwich.

Very disappointed!! In Grand Rapids for business and was looking for a delicatessen. Found Schnitz's the only Jewish style deli I could find. Stopped in for a Pastrami on rye with some brown mustard to go. When I got back in my car and on the road again. Took out half of the sandwich looked ok,not as piled high as described in some of the reviews but decent. First bite was spicy but ok. Thought the mustard was pretty spicy but it was the amount of pepper that was on the meat, so much so that my mouth was on fire and I drank half a bottle of water. It didn't have a Smokey flavor at all and it seemed that there was no coriander used. The meat it self was tough not moist and fall apart at all. Like a corned beef brisket cooked to fast. Service was fast and good. But. Never again!

So glad to be able to finally try this place!! I love delis and this place is the best. Fresh sandwiches with any combination you can think of!! Order at the counter and then they bring your food out to you and call out your name. Really quick service! Fountain pop and bottle available plus a variety of sides. Really super reasonable pricing and some sandwiches you can order as a half. They also have soups. I got the #9 and it was delicious. Pasta salad was tasty too. My friend liked her #8. Can't wait to come back and try more!!

Red skin potato salad

Schnitz Rueben Red skin potato salad I asked around and apparently this place has the best Rueben in town. I will say it was pretty damn good. Generous with the corned beef and just the right amount of kraut and dressing. Fresh bread and good cheese. I'll say it's the best in town I've had. I'll probably go back soon to try the pumpernickel/pastrami version. I also got a side of red skin potato salad which was creamy and savory but the bottom was a little bit frozen. Still tasty though. Also they have a good variety of cakes that look absolutely incredible (I'm scared to know how many calories are in one piece). Great little deli! They also have coupons on their website for extra discounts and goodies. Only downside was how incredibly loud it was inside. Seriously someone needs to come study this place I didn't think it was possible for a small shop to be near deafening.

It's a cozy little space on Michigan Street with takeout, pick-up and dine-in options. The food is great and the service has always been very friendly. I've sampled multiple menu items and have not had a bad one yet. While the French Dip and Italian Bomber are good, I have been gravitating towards their burgers, which are exceptional. My boys and I have tried over 40 places for burgers in the GR area, and this is one of our very favorites. The Pickle Poppers and Truffle Fries are tasty sides and the 'Pickle Dippin' Sauce' is quite addictive.

And by god, was I impressed. It's a small little sandwich shop off of Michigan Ave that has seating for maaaybe 20 people. I ordered the spicy chicken sandwich to go, and when I got home to open my box, my jaw dropped. These guys put not one, but TWO mf chicken breast cutlets on this poor, poor bun. Topped with delicious house made pickles (their namesake), a fresh and tangly slaw, and a spicy oily sauce, this thing was a behemoth. And for, like, $15?? This is two meals for the average person. My only complaint was that the bun simply could not shoulder the monstrous burden of what it contained. Additionally, dude the fries are phenomenal. And they absolutely LOAD you up. Get the truffle upcharge, it's worth it I promise. I have been a Two Beards fan for the better part of the past 15 years, but man, in terms of value, The Toasted Pickle takes the cake. I can't wait to experience whatever else these guys are whipping up behind the counter.

They will let you try samples in store if you ask. I recently tried their new summer menu and while the picnic burger was delicious, I expected it to be a bit larger for the price (it was on a slider bun). The Hawaiian mac salad was tasty, but was a little heavy handed on the red onion for my own personal preference. I will for sure be trying some other things on their picnic menu, but honestly looking forward to the fall hoping that they will switch back to their regular menu with soup and grilled cheese. I support whatever helps them stay open since I assume soup isn't the most popular option come July and heat waves!

Their menu includes 10+ different soups each day, as well as several sandwiches and some salads. I ordered the garage sale: white cheddar, fresh mozz, rosemary goat mousse, havarti, and swiss on challah. I also got the steak and mushroom soup and the snert soup for Nate. When I arrived my order was waiting for me - it was nicely packaged and secure so everything was safely contained for my short drive home. The sandwich wasn't very melty, I ended up heating it up in a pan myself which helped. It was super tasty, though! I love the combination of cheeses. The steak and mushroom soup was really good, with chunks of meat in a creamy broth. The snert soup was very salty! The menu description indicated the snert soup should have sausage or kielbasa in it, but we didn't notice any. The restaurant itself is pretty small with limited seating, but I'd probably just order there next time. You can also get samples.

They even have their own canned root beer. How cool is that. Unfortunately it was a little too sweet with maple syrup/molasses taste for me (to be fair the waitress forewarned me about the fair. But why not try their signature root beer. I don't regret it one bit). My only issue, which is out of their control was that the parking lot was packed on a Saturday 6pm, so we had to find street parking down the road.

It is just gas station cheese and chili from a can. Again, not horrible just nothing special. Overall, I probably wouldn't recommend this place but I also want to steer someone away either especially if you are drunk and at the bar across the street. I'm sure it tastes much better. That being said, I think it's a perfect restaurant for its location. There is not a ton of competition directly next-door or across the street. And technically, the Bar across the street has food of a similar quality however it is a nice alternative It's up to you. When I walked in, the place was packed. It's a small space, and it was bustling around 1 pm. I was noticed by a kind employee who let me sit at a cozy booth. The menu is huge and includes tons of sandwiches, burgers, wraps, and salads. It was tough to choose but I went with the Irish reuben (grilled pastrami, corned beef, bacon, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, thousand island on marble rye). Sandwiches come with chips, or you can upgrade to fries (regular, sweet potato, or Southwestern dipping fries) - I went with the Southwestern dipping fries, which are seasoned potato wedges. My food came out quickly and I was amazed at the large portions. It was a full basket of fries and a sandwich that would equal two full sandwiches elsewhere. The sandwich was super hot and delicious and packed with meat. I think it's one of the tastiest reubens I've had in awhile. The fries were good, but I think I prefer regular fries. Glad I got to try them, though. They have a daily special where a specific item is discounted, which makes it an affordable option for lunch. I was there on a Tuesday so the special was a spicy fried chicken sandwich or wrap for $12 served with chips or fries. That's a great deal! I will definitely be back for one of their specials. The employees I interacted with were all very friendly and kind and working really hard. I always appreciate good customer service and I found that here. Finally, they serve beer and wine, so if you want a drink with lunch, that is an option as well. The only downside is the small dining area, so I wouldn't say it's great for large groups, and they are only open Monday through Friday for lunch. Luckily I have a flexible schedule, so I'll be back for lunch again soon!
