    Italian hoagie
    Kay H.

Pros: do you love Jewish Delis?! If so, this is going to rock your world Cons: None. Well, parking can be a smidge tricky. No more traveling to Ann Arbor to scratch my Ruben itch. These babies are toasted, packed with the good stuff, and staff are great. I also love the ambiance of the location. It's old school, comfy, and fabulous! Truly, it is charming as heck. My hubs tried the Italian hoagie and I got Evan's double dip (corned beef AND pastrami with kraut and 1000Isle on toasted rye). My hubs hoagie was great -the French roll was perfection; really nice chew. My sandwich was glorious! Perfectly toasted and nicely portioned. I also got a slice of banana cake.... It was MAGIC! You cannot find banana cake around here and I hadn't had a slice in probably 25 years. It was as good as my grandma's. A moist sheet pan slice with the most amazing cream cheese frosting. I highly recommend! The Big John is next on our list (my hubs is obsessed with Big John's in Lansing). They were sold out when we visited, but we'll be back! Side note on parking: there are a few spaces along the sidewalk in front. There is also a small parking lot in the back that is shared with other businesses. It wasn't terribly clear where we could park back there so we crossed our fingers and hoped for the best. Additional side note: there's a bakery 2 doors down where their bread is made! Check it out for breads and sweet treats!

Whole size - Pastrami on sour dough with cheddar and mustard.

First time at what is obviously a local favorite for lunch. Fun deli feel with very helpful people to walk you through making a custom sandwich. Half and whole sandwiches are only a dollar apart and a difference in a quarter pound of meat!! I had a pastrami with sour dough and it was heavy with meat. My wife wanted a grilled cheese with ham, and was a bit disappointed it was not melting with cheese. However they both tasted great. Potatoes salad is very flavorful with tons of potatoes! It is had plenty of seating and some parking in front and back, but try to get here before the rush as noon!

This is a delicious deli. The sandwiches were so so good and the sides. We did not try the cakes but they looked amazing. Can't wait to come back.

One of the best deli's in GR. The Rancher's Roast Beef has all the best savory flavor combinations that will warm you up on a cold January day.

This deli does not disappoint. My husband and I split the Reuben and the corned beef was delicious, but the bread alone nearly stole the show. I loved the broccoli salad as a side, but there were so many amazing options to choose from. Staff was so nice and even brought our food out to us at their adorable street seating. Overall 10/10 and I'll be back very soon.

Very disappointed!! In Grand Rapids for business and was looking for a delicatessen. Found Schnitz's the only Jewish style deli I could find. Stopped in for a Pastrami on rye with some brown mustard to go. When I got back in my car and on the road again. Took out half of the sandwich looked ok,not as piled high as described in some of the reviews but decent. First bite was spicy but ok. Thought the mustard was pretty spicy but it was the amount of pepper that was on the meat, so much so that my mouth was on fire and I drank half a bottle of water. It didn't have a Smokey flavor at all and it seemed that there was no coriander used. The meat it self was tough not moist and fall apart at all. Like a corned beef brisket cooked to fast. Service was fast and good. But. Never again!

So glad to be able to finally try this place!! I love delis and this place is the best. Fresh sandwiches with any combination you can think of!! Order at the counter and then they bring your food out to you and call out your name. Really quick service! Fountain pop and bottle available plus a variety of sides. Really super reasonable pricing and some sandwiches you can order as a half. They also have soups. I got the #9 and it was delicious. Pasta salad was tasty too. My friend liked her #8. Can't wait to come back and try more!!

    Red skin potato salad

Schnitz Rueben Red skin potato salad I asked around and apparently this place has the best Rueben in town. I will say it was pretty damn good. Generous with the corned beef and just the right amount of kraut and dressing. Fresh bread and good cheese. I'll say it's the best in town I've had. I'll probably go back soon to try the pumpernickel/pastrami version. I also got a side of red skin potato salad which was creamy and savory but the bottom was a little bit frozen. Still tasty though. Also they have a good variety of cakes that look absolutely incredible (I'm scared to know how many calories are in one piece). Great little deli! They also have coupons on their website for extra discounts and goodies. Only downside was how incredibly loud it was inside. Seriously someone needs to come study this place I didn't think it was possible for a small shop to be near deafening.

The menu is still huge and very overwhelming, but for this visit, I just decided what type of sandwich I wanted (turkey, ham, roast beef, corned beef, pastrami, chicken, sausage, vegetarian, vegan, or salad) and I knew I wanted it grilled. From there I mostly looked at the starred favorite options and went with the #35 Hulihee: Corned beef, pastrami, cheddar, caramelized onions, roasted tomato, garlic mayo on white or wheat. Most of the sandwiches come in half or whole sizes - the half is just a smaller version. For an extra $2 I went with the whole. The menu also includes soup options and salads. They'll give you a table number if you're dining in and then bring your order out to you. The sandwich was toasted and hot, and had a generous amount of meat. I didn't notice all of the other ingredients (I don't think I had any tomato? And didn't really taste a lot of cheddar), but it was saucy and tasty. I really enjoyed this sandwich and I'm glad I went back!

The space is small and seating was a bit cramped. I wouldn't cone with more than 3 people max if you are hoping to be able to sit. But great if you want to grab it and head home. Shop was very loud due to the small space, music playing and people talking but thats expected. For me the cost seemed a bit high. The sandwiches just come on a standard size bread you would make at home and most of the options are just various ways to make a grilled cheese. And while they taste good, they are still $10 or more for a grilled cheese. Same for the soups, they taste good and lots of choices but for the small (12oz) you are still paying $8 or more. Which means even for just a standard grilled cheese and tomato soup you are spending $18 or more so it feels a bit expensive at that point. I had a Ruben (on standard sized bread) and a pastrami soup for $23. Also, no real need to upgrade for a $1 for the roll to come with your soup. Not really anything special about it. But again overall it did taste good on a cold day. Just which the cost was slightly lower and seating didn't feel cramped.

They even have their own canned root beer. How cool is that. Unfortunately it was a little too sweet with maple syrup/molasses taste for me (to be fair the waitress forewarned me about the fair. But why not try their signature root beer. I don't regret it one bit). My cousin and I sat at the bar, and you can get full service at the bar. She ordered a hot dog and I had a pizza. The hot dog came with that weird neon relish, in typical Chicago fashion, and was on a poppyseed bun. The fries are crinkle cut, and I don't know what seasoning they use, but it was so good! A little sweetness mixed in with the spices. The pizza was good; thin crust and cut square style like they do in Chicago, which I forgot about and kind of hate. I should've asked for silverware, but didn't. Next time I'd ask for it pie cut instead. The flavor was really good though. It was a bit pricey for what it was - it was a 12" pizza, and each topping an additional $3. $21 just seems high to me for a thin crust pepperoni mushroom pizza. I had draft beer and my cousin had a mixed drink. She had no complaints about hers, and mine was quite good! So many places draft beer tastes a little soapy, whether it's the way the clean their lines or how they wash their glasses, but I didn't taste any of that here. There aren't many choices on draft but was a good variety. They also have a full bar and lots of canned beverage choices. They don't have the healthiest menu, but that's not surprising since they're known for Chicago hot dogs, Italian beef, and pizza. If you know what you're going for it's perfect! The vibe is good. The space is pretty open, gets a decent amount of light, is clean, and there is parking! The restrooms are tiny, but clean, and I appreciate that after you wash your hands the door opens out so you don't have to touch a handle. We went on a Monday after work, which does turn into karaoke night, but we had time for a couple drinks and food before that really got going. It also wasn't crazy in there and we could still carry on a conversation at the bar without having to yell. I'm glad I finally made it in, and fully appreciate having them in the North Monroe area. I will definitely plan to have more happy hours here!

When I walked in, the place was packed. It's a small space, and it was bustling around 1 pm. I was noticed by a kind employee who let me sit at a cozy booth. The menu is huge and includes tons of sandwiches, burgers, wraps, and salads. It was tough to choose but I went with the Irish reuben (grilled pastrami, corned beef, bacon, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, thousand island on marble rye). Sandwiches come with chips, or you can upgrade to fries (regular, sweet potato, or Southwestern dipping fries) - I went with the Southwestern dipping fries, which are seasoned potato wedges. My food came out quickly and I was amazed at the large portions. It was a full basket of fries and a sandwich that would equal two full sandwiches elsewhere. The sandwich was super hot and delicious and packed with meat. I think it's one of the tastiest reubens I've had in awhile. The fries were good, but I think I prefer regular fries. Glad I got to try them, though. They have a daily special where a specific item is discounted, which makes it an affordable option for lunch. I was there on a Tuesday so the special was a spicy fried chicken sandwich or wrap for $12 served with chips or fries. That's a great deal! I will definitely be back for one of their specials. The employees I interacted with were all very friendly and kind and working really hard. I always appreciate good customer service and I found that here. Finally, they serve beer and wine, so if you want a drink with lunch, that is an option as well. The only downside is the small dining area, so I wouldn't say it's great for large groups, and they are only open Monday through Friday for lunch. Luckily I have a flexible schedule, so I'll be back for lunch again soon!
