I went with a group of 6 on a weekday evening. Overall, this place was just okay. My biggest complaint is about the service. The place was nearly empty and it felt like nobody wanted to help us at all. When we were served our food, nobody provided us with silverware... we were nice and waited, well over five minutes for a server to reappear from outside or the kitchen with no luck, so someone from our table had to walk into the kitchen and ask for help... even still it took a few minutes before the issue was addressed. For before the only table that seemed to order food... it took a long time to get silverware. There was also well over 5 servers walking around. The food itself was okay... nothing to write home about. We got a macaroni and cheese inspired dish that I felt was over salted -- otherwise I would have really liked it. The food is great, though the portions might disappoint you. Nice atmosphere and good service. Beer was ok. Ordered the winter beet salad. It was $16. Literally .20 cents worth of arugula with 3 slices of canned beets (the menu said roasted beets) and a tablespoons worth of pecan bits at the bottom of the bowl. Paying more to eat healthy is pretty standard at restaurants but this took it to the next level. Pretty disappointing. read more

Love the atmosphere at Schnitz Ale! Lots of space. Lots of attention to detail. Our server was tremendous! I had grilled cheese & tomato soup; my favorite combo. The soup was nice & earthy. I really enjoyed it. The sandwich was nothing special. Felt more like a big crouton for the soup, but I was good with that. Hubby got the smoked wings. Tried a bite. Wow! Those were really tasty! Could definitely taste the smoke, but it was not overpowering. I had their Dunkel. It was fine, nothing to write home about. And glad I only asked for a taste of the rauchbier. Wasn't a big fan of that either. Didn't mind about the beverages. We had great service and great food all within an hour. For this hockey family that finds itself at Barons rink many nights a week, this is a 1,000x better option than IceHouse. Hallelujah! read more

I tried a beer flight, which was great and we'll priced. We had a watermelon mojito which tasted good but, could not taste any alcohol at all and it was $10 a glass. The reason for only a 2 star is for the food. Granted it was only the first time there and only 3 menu items were tried so, that's all I have to go on. Beef stroganoff. Wow was I disappointed. Soo salty I couldn't eat it. I didn't want to wait to have them cook another dish so I just packed it to go, leaving almost all the gravy on the plate. Well the meat itself was also very salty so, I tried eating what I could because it was $24 and didn't even come with a dinner roll or anything but, never again! The everything pretzel. This was good, the beer cheese was ok, not as thick as other places but the flavor was good. The mustard was not good to me, all you taste is horseradish. The other dish was the Brewsket sandwich (minus the bun). They didn't have anything else to offer besides the brioche bun. (I now see the menu shows they have marble rye bread she could have offered). The brisket and fries were good. The coleslaw again, not a fan as it tasted like horseradish. I'm not sure what was more disappointing--my meal at Schnitz Ale Brewery last night or the blatant misrepresentation of it on their menu. I ordered the Chicken Confit, described online and in-house as "Chicken Quarters over seasonal vegetables and mashed potatoes." For $28, I expected a classic preparation: chicken slow-cooked in its own fat until tender and flavorful, with crispy skin and savory, herbaceous notes. You know, actual confit. Instead, I received a sticky, sugary mess that had no business calling itself confit. The chicken was drowned--smothered--in what tasted like honey or syrup. It was disgustingly sweet and inedible; I couldn't make it past one bite. I had asked for a salad instead of mashed potatoes, trying to lighten the dish, but that too was compromised--polluted by the sweet, gooey sauce that had oozed over everything on the plate, including the seasonal vegetables, which were rendered just as nauseating as the chicken itself. To her credit, the waitress seemed empathetic and did consult the kitchen, but came back with the worst possible answer: "That's how we do it here," per the chef. She also claimed it was listed on the menu as honey-coated. That is simply not true--it is not listed that way on their website, nor was it on the printed menu I saw last night. If you're going to stray that far from a traditional dish--especially one with centuries of culinary history--the very least you can do is describe it accurately. To serve a sugary glaze and call it confit is culinary malpractice. If I wanted dessert chicken, I would've gone to a carnival. Schnitz Ale Brewery should either revise their recipe or, at the very least, stop misleading customers who know what chicken confit is supposed to be. Until then, I'll be taking my appetite--and my money--elsewhere. read more

Stopped here on the way back to Akron from the West Side Market. A few observations. Upon arrival, the bartender ignored us completely. Didn't receive a menu, a hello, or any other acknowledgement that we were there. That particular employee was too busy proudly telling the patron right next to us that his friends played college football. This is my only negative. The beer was good and cold and creative. The service from everyone other than Mr. Football was outstanding. We didn't eat, but every plate that we saw looked great and smelled better. Super clean environment and a really cool upstairs option that had two holiday gatherings at the same time. The staff hustled to make every order in a timely fashion and there were a few "regulars" while we were there who seemed to really enjoy it. We plan to go back and get some of their food. I have been twice with a decent group of friends and the staff is always accommodating, especially since I'm in a wheelchair. They always make sure our table is easy to get to for me. Also they always have a chair moved out of the way. Last time I went I asked if the chef could cut my elk burger in half and they gladly did. This is close to home and we've visited a couple of times. Saturday, we had a large group birthday dinner. I was so pleased, I had to write a review. First, I'm so glad we had a reservation because it was really packed on the ground level. Call for a reservation if you have a party greater than 2. Second, starters: We love the beer cheese covered pretzel and flat bread (it's called something else with an "S" but can't recall the name). We had a couple of nice IPAs. All - Excellent. Our server was so sweet that when we changed our order, even though it was already made, she had our order re-made, with a smile, and quickly. So kudos, also, to the kitchen! For the main course, we raved about our food! The mac & cheese with pulled pork was plentiful and delicious - and this is per a very picky eater. A couple of us had the all beef hamburgers. OH so good! I LOVE their fries! Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Note: even the burgers are smoked, so you won't be able to order "rare" or "well done" - it is what it is. The wings were devoured - ordered as a "side" they ended up being an entree. They were huge and the devourer didn't speak as he cleaned the bones. The Brewsket sandwich looked great and was a pleaser, too. Third, I haven't been upstairs, but it looks really nice. It was a bummer that there's only one single restroom on the ground floor. My son and recently had lunch here and we have only great things to say! Starting with our server, Samantha. She was friendly, efficient and even tried to find us a growler so that we could we could take some beer with us! We tried 5 different brews, with the Copy and Pastry being our favorite. We ordered the large everything pretzel. Came with cheese sauce and mustard- both tasty. We shared the very large and delicious Nashville hot schnitzel. We also had a side of spaetzl-if I have anything that could be improved it would be the spaetzl. It was good tasting but a bit dry. A great experience! We initially came here when they first opened and they were still getting set up so had a limited food menu. We came this time and it was even better! They have a full beer list and wine/cocktails now. They have a full food menu with daily and weekly specials too. And dessert! A one stop shop. Very clean and attentive staff.
