He's more laid back, and I'm more on the traditional side so we were at a loss on how to make everything work together. Even more so, we were combining two different apartments into one - not any easy task considering how small apartments in NYC are. Mindy, our designer, was great at taking cues from both of us and working around us when things would get too complicated. Not only was she extremely helpful in helping us edit, but she also had some genius storage solutions for our small home. In the end we made the right choice, and we also made a great friend in Mindy. I recommend her and Decor Aid to everyone who comes over after they stop gushing over how terrific everything looks. And in case we ever move to a larger spot, we're definitely bringing them back on!

STAY AWAY. I waited…read morea while to write this review since I wanted to let my anger abate and I was busy with other things. But months later I feel a moral obligation to warn people about this company. If like me, you will likely read the reviews and the owner's responses and suspect that they are a good company and that the bad reviews are just from impossible people. But they quell the bad reviews with small payouts and gag orders (see the photo). They use contract workers who may or may not be able to get the job done. The discounts they promise never come true. In fact they quoted more than I would pay as a regular retail customer, for every single item I asked them about. (notice that they don't list the specifics of their discounts on their website...) When asked to come through on what they promise, they are unhelpful at best and often nasty (read the owner's comments on bad reviews to get a taste). When your project has gone on way too long, they haven't come through on any promises and you are at wits end, they may offer you a small sum to not write a bad review. I suspect that many of us, on modest budgets, take the money just to cut some of our losses. Before you get taken in by the good reviews and the pretty pictures, read the reviews again. Notice there are almost no reviews in the middle, only really bad and really glowing ones. The good ones all start to sound the same. Go to a website where employees write reviews and note that many say the company writes their own good reviews. See that gag order and think of how many people they silenced. I am out a lot of money and hope this review saves someone else.

He is booked months out on larger residential and commercial projects, so if he fits you in consider yourself lucky. Master craftsmen like Alexander are busy for a reason, and the vast majority do not take on small side projects. Take a quick glance at his work on his website and you'll see what I mean.  I loved working with Alexander. He is professional and has a lifetime of experience. This was particularly important for our project in an old building, with warped, uneven walls that were difficult to drill into. Many people told us it would not be possible to do this project, but Alexander had the skillset to make it happen. He was able to adapt on the fly and work very quickly while maintaining the quality and look we were hoping for. He is a wizard, and even took apart one of our cabinets and redesigned it upside down on the fly so it would open properly under the heavy oak desktop. I was able to watch and learn alongside him. It's like watching an artist at work. As a bonus, he has great stories about old townhouses in Brooklyn if you like architecture and history.   I highly recommend this local business. It's been several months since we completed the project. We've added a dual-screen computer plus books and other heavy objects to the desk and it is solid. The cabinets are working perfectly. I can't thank Alexander enough!

Illume Lighting Gem: LUCA…read more I cannot say enough wonderful things about Luca at Ilume Lighting. I called on a Friday afternoon, just an hour before they were closing, hoping to get help with my beloved Artemide floor lamp that had mostly discontinued parts. Luca answered and kindly told me to come by, while cautioning that they closed at 3 PM. I rushed over, and I am so glad I did. Not only was Luca welcoming and professional, but his knowledge was incredible--he had even worked for the Rondo company in Milan and knew this lamp inside and out. What a rare find! A friend of mine once spent four hours unsuccessfully trying to fix it, and Luca solved it in under 20 minutes with absolute ease. Beyond his skill, he was one of the nicest people I've met in customer service--genuine, thoughtful, and truly passionate about his craft. And I have to add: the most stylish and fashionable electrical engineer I've ever encountered! Thanks to Luca, my lamp is shining beautifully again. I will absolutely return to Ilume for all my future lighting needs. If you want expertise, impeccable service, and someone who genuinely cares, go see Luca. He's a gem.

First we met at my apartment so that he could get a sense of my personality, discuss design ideas, and figure out the overall tone of the job. After my initital appointment at my apartment, I went to see how his apartment was designed so I would get a better sense of the finished look. He then pins ideas to a Pinterest board and posts them so you know exactly what to order if you want to go ahead with particular suggestions. I found that extremely helpful. Michael went above and beyond for me, helping pick out the paint colors, assisiting with window treatments, and even finding proper positions/making suggestions for lamps. After the paint job was finished we went over where to hang my prints on my wall and his recommendations were spot on! I'd definitely work with Michael again in the future and hope more people have the opportunity to do so as well.

Beyond that, I did not have any clear idea as to what I was seeking. Charlie was at all times patient and professional, and was prepared to take on board all of my suggestions, notwithstanding the fact that, with hindsight, some of them were less than reasonable or realistic. He got the measure of what I wanted and needed fairly quickly, and was able to work around these, while simultaneously taking me out of my comfort zone. He did not, unlike some designers, shy away from affordable pieces or ideas, and was always guided by only what was likely to work. He is very knowledgeable as to options available and was an immense source of help in signposting me to suitable sources and sites, without overwhelming me with choice. He was also always open and amenable to accommodate the client's change in direction and mindset. Importantly, the project felt like a journey for both he and I, and it was clear that he took ownership over and pride in his work. He also takes a lot of pride surrounding himself with like minded contractors and suppliers; and when they do not follow through, he is quick to make remedial action. I am thrilled with the finished project, and as one would expect for a residential property it is both beautiful but functional. I would have no hesitation in using Charlie again when I next remodel.
