STAY AWAY. I waited a while to write this review since I wanted to let my anger abate and I was busy with other things. But months later I feel a moral obligation to warn people about this company. If like me, you will likely read the reviews and the owner's responses and suspect that they are a good company and that the bad reviews are just from impossible people. But they quell the bad reviews with small payouts and gag orders (see the photo). They use contract workers who may or may not be able to get the job done. The discounts they promise never come true. In fact they quoted more than I would pay as a regular retail customer, for every single item I asked them about. (notice that they don't list the specifics of their discounts on their website...) When asked to come through on what they promise, they are unhelpful at best and often nasty (read the owner's comments on bad reviews to get a taste). When your project has gone on way too long, they haven't come through on any promises and you are at wits end, they may offer you a small sum to not write a bad review. I suspect that many of us, on modest budgets, take the money just to cut some of our losses. Before you get taken in by the good reviews and the pretty pictures, read the reviews again. Notice there are almost no reviews in the middle, only really bad and really glowing ones. The good ones all start to sound the same. Go to a website where employees write reviews and note that many say the company writes their own good reviews. See that gag order and think of how many people they silenced. I would strongly advise against using Decor Aid. I had a very bad experience, resulting in a half-finished project that I do not trust them to complete in a satisfactory manner. Over the course of a year, I had to work with 3 separate designers because 2 of them quit the company, which caused huge delays in my project. The first time, the company never even called me to let me know. It was only after months of emails and phone calls did I find out he had left and they realized they needed to assign someone else to work with me. He also left after a month. When I finally was paired with a proactive, responsive designer, things initially were going well but we eventually ran into issues with cost. Despite having voiced wanting to be conservative on cost, I kept on being shown very high cost items (if I'm not willing to spend $4,000 on a dresser, do you think I will be interested in spending $6,000 on two cube custom upholstered ottomans?) Finally, they misrepresented some of the pieces to me. They rendered an $1,800 table in the living room like it would be a small side table between two chairs. The table arrived and it was a completely different size that was not appropriate at all for the space( see pictures). When I asked about it, I was told it looks nice in the space elsewhere and that was it- returning it would be on me including the 25% restocking fee and shipping. These guys rock. We used them to pick new outdoor furniture and we liked what they did so much we had them re-do our kitchen and bathroom as well. They took care of everything including finding qualified contractors, drawing up plans, ensuring the contractor was on-track (and getting him back on track when things slipped near the end), and putting on finishing touches. They took care of all the ordering and purchasing and working on our schedule to get everything installed. I really like how they don't add commissions to purchases - you are paying them by the hour so they're not incentivized to find expensive items to add to their cut. Amanda, our designer, was very receptive to our design ideas and suggested lots of ideas and worked with us to make a perfect design. She paid attention to what we already had, asked what we liked and what we didn't, and always kept an eye on our budget to ensure we got good value for our money. I really loved the experience of working with Decor Aid! They made the process fairly straightforward, answered all of our questions, hired very skilled professionals, and handled a few odd mishaps with grace and ease! Our designer, Jenna, was a saint. My husband originally had us sign up for an online service that doesn't even come to your home - who would have thought, and who has the time? We sure didn't and couldn't keep up. I had just moved into a new bungalow in Loz Feliz that's the largest home I've ever had and I had no clue on what to do from room to room, I just knew that I wanted something that was unique and not like everyone else's mid-century modern homes. My designer quickly created inspiring moodboards and introduced me to transitional aesthetics and I love the results. My home is rich and layered and stands out among predictable L.A style. And the service was excellent and really fun. Everything was centered around me and not a designer's diva moments. After meeting with several other interior design firms, my partner and I settled on Decor Aid to help us combine our furniture in our first home together. He's more laid back, and I'm more on the traditional side so we were at a loss on how to make everything work together. Even more so, we were combining two different apartments into one - not any easy task considering how small apartments in NYC are. Mindy, our designer, was great at taking cues from both of us and working around us when things would get too complicated. My first time using my own decorator, designer Mandy and the team at Decor Aid made my experience so unlike what I remember my parents going through. Mandy was professional, had zero attitude, and had a great eye and decorating ideas that had never even crossed my mind for my small apartment. Having recently purchased the place, I wanted to start from scratch, but I am not a fan of everything looking brand new. I like a mix of modern mixed with French antiques, pieces with character - an aesthetic that takes a very particular person to make work. Mandy worked with my core tastes and expanded on them, she did not dictate what she thought it should like without me. She took care of everything and worked with a contractor and painter to re-do the kitchen and bathroom and I have to say, the kitchen is so sleek and incredible, it looks like an art gallery!  Mandy made the space look bigger by finding furniture that had glass tops, and was smart to recommend objects that are easily movable. And there was no mystery behind any of the fees and prices on furniture and objects I got. I remember my parents would be up-charged for furniture to the point that it was a joke by their decorator. In fact, I saved money by using Decor Aid as I got industry discounts on almost everything. DecorAid really impressed me and I hope to be able use them again in the future and have toId everyone who comes over about them. I highly regret my decision to work with Decoraid and would urge friends or strangers against working with them, and I feel personally taken advantage of. The final outcome took over 9 months and left 40% of the proposal unfilled with no payment back to me for missing services. My main feedback is that the process the firm runs is *incredibly* inefficient and leaves almost no opportunity for collaboration. The other is that the designers are basically just internet shoppers, with no connection to the things they're actually buying. With two in person meetings followed by a single proposal, there's basically no chance to actually get a good outcome. No one knows exactly what they want in the first meeting, and if they did they wouldn't need Decoraid. It takes working through options and figuring out what works well together. Neither designer I worked with (I was given a new designer after 4+ months of nothing happening with the first) used a pinterest board (something that seems super weird for an interior designer) that we could have collaborated through. Instead, they sent over single rug options without any context on other pieces that would fit with it. The reason I would pay someone $2,000 to help design a studio apartment would be for their creative spirit and perspective, and neither were proactive at all - basically just taking the things I wanted and googling them to find options. If you see a couch without pillows or a blanket, shouldn't she be calling out that I need that? Shouldn't she be architecting what to do with a blank 2 floor wall that's 20 feet wide? This seems to be a foundational expectation hearing about friends' experiences with other designers. The other missing aspect is that the designers used entirely cookie cutter options - only limited to West Elm, Crate and Barrel, and All Modern. Interior Designers are supposed to know more than you and do things you can't do in your own free time. They're supposed to have a good eye and be tuned in to off the beaten track options, visiting markets and fairs and hunting for good options. To be honest, they weren't even been good at the cookie cutter options - suggesting terribly uncomfortable itchy thin rugs, and couldn't find a Brass Mirror that was available to order which I found for myself within 10 minutes of looking. Of the first three items to arrive, I returned two of them because they didn't fit. With the amount of effort this took on my side and the time it's taken and the bad results it's yielded, along with no recourse for missing items from the initial proposal, I feel taken advantage of. read more

Not only did the designers provide great ideas for enhancing the look/feel of my studio, they literally kicked off their heels and helped me completely rearrange all my furniture for a better layout. There wasn't anything pushy or salesy, just talented, helpful people. I recommend them 100% and will definitely use them in the future when I move or decide to give my apartment a refresh (though I don't see that happening thanks to the Decoraid designers). read more

Decor Aid - Simple, Modern and Perfect! - Interior Design Near Me - New York, New York

My experience with Decor Aid was eerily similar to that of another recent reviewer. Like the other reviewer, our designer was also terminated, and I, too, only found out after weeks of unreturned calls and emails. I, too, was verbally abused and disparaged by the CEO and lied to by the staff. I, too, had only been sent partial plans and incomplete details, and our renovation has been delayed as a result. Read on for details. Like the other reviewer, everything was going well at first. Markus Weber, one of the founders, and the designer, who I liked a lot, estimated "Phase 1" (pre-renovation planning and design) would take 60 hours to complete. I purchased 20 hours to start. The designer came up with a few pretty good general concepts for the kitchen and bath, had some interesting partial layout ideas and comments to our architect's plans, and for the most part, responded to my emails and questions. I purchased another 20 hours, at which point everything changed. The designer was suddenly spread VERY thin, and was notably less responsive. When she did respond, it was usually to tell me she was planning to respond soon. I received one partial kitchen board and a revised bathroom board during this time. Shortly thereafter, communications stopped completely. After weeks of unanswered emails and calls, I called again and spoke to Sean Juneji, the other founder, who finally told me the designer was no longer with the company. I was not pleased that I had to call Decor Aid to learn about the designer. Based on what I'd received from the designer to date, and that roughly 2/3rds of Phase 1 was still not complete, I estimated the designer spent (at most) 22-23 hours total on my project. I paid for 40 hours. I asked Sean for documentation showing which tasks were completed and time each task took (which Markus had promised to provide me upon request as a condition to me agreeing to hire them in the first place). I expected a refund for any services not rendered. Sean said it would take a few days to compile. The documentation was never provided. A week later, Sean and Markus sent a chain of emails between the designer and me, which they had pasted into a single document. It did not have any tasks or hourly information. According to Sean, based on those emails, the designer had done "substantial work" in addition to what was in the proposal, she spent 40 hours on the project, and, therefore, they would not issue me a partial refund. However, the majority of emails they claimed were "additional work" were actually questions FROM ME to the designer, most of which were never answered. Sean had no response to this, nor did he have a response when I asked why, even assuming so-called "additional work" was done, no one notified me that I would be charged extra. I again asked for details on the hours spent on each task, including further explanation of the so-called additional work, and for clarification on how they got to 40 hours. They refused to provide this information. To make matters worse, Markus and Sean (mainly Markus) have quite the tempers. Markus ridiculed me and made snarky comments rooted in personal attacks, especially when they did not have answers to my questions. I was stunned. Sean threatened to sue me if I posted a negative review. Sean's only proposed solution was that I purchase another 20 hours to complete Phase 1. After being treated the way I was, and having already paid thousands of dollars for services that were not rendered, the idea of paying Décor Aid thousands more was hardly a reasonable solution. The way this was handled by Decor Aid is pretty unbelievable. Renovating is stressful enough without being bullied by a design company. At one point, Sean said he and Markus had left lucrative jobs on Wall Street to start Décor Aid, so they "shouldn't have to lose money" because of this. I find that incredibly ironic. Had someone just bothered to promptly pick up the phone, explain the circumstances, apologize for the inconvenience, assure me they won't miss a beat and propose a plan to get back on track immediately--not to mention treat me with some respect--this probably would have turned out differently. In any event, I'm quite certain I'm the only one who lost money because of this. read more

They completely accommodated me from taking me shopping to their favorite furniture/design haunts in Brooklyn and keeping it within my budget. Money well invested! Decor Aid is literally my dream come true as it comes to home design. I've always wanted a well decorated home but I don't have the talent needed (so I wasted a lot of money throughout my life buying furniture that ultimately didn't go well with other items I already had) nor the money to pay tens of thousands for traditional interior designers to come decorate my home. Decor Aid allowed me to get the help I wanted for a very affordable price. My living room pieces are now arriving and I love the result. Because I live out in the suburbs in Boston, they did not have a person that could come to my home. However, they still helped me my putting me in contact with their NYC office (Meredith Cook was my designer, she's amazing) and we did all the work through skype/phone/email. It was very convenient. Meredith was very professional, responsive and patient (with the couple of times I changed my mind) and really tried to work with me in understanding my style before proposing a plan. I grew up with a mother who loved decorating her entire life and though it rubbed off on me a great deal and I've collected a slew of mid-century scores over the years, my husband and I found ourselves seriously short on time in decorating our new home before our first son arrived. After reading all bad reviews I still gave them a try to work on my new condo, because I liked their work on design and believe that people could exaggerate, but I am very disappointed with this comany. I've wasted a week of my life to find out that designers, that handle projects "like mine" in Brooklyn are fully booked for the season and unavailable for next couple of months! You know when I was told that? A day or two before planned appointment, as we were trying to coordinate it with my broker, which days of weekend will work. Not a word about limited availability or busy design season. So, at first they told me that weekend might work, then they said in a couple of weeks I'll be taken care of, next email(oh dear, sent like an hour later) stated couple of months there is no one to come look at my place for initial consultation. Can't you find me a designer that works not on a projects "like mine" to save a client and your reputation? Grenpoint is 20 minutes away from your store/office! That's all after I told coordinator, Maia, that I am available almost every weekday and weekend! Seriously? Did every designer quit their job? You might be questioning, was my budget to low, so I've got PIV treatment, opposite from VIP? Nope, I said I have opened budget. Each peace of furniture in around $1000 range. With potential extra expenses on renovation(only for design needs), if such occur. And we are looking at 2 bedroom condo with backyard, that needs designer touch. As new construction in Deep Ellum can be really boring and basic, I needed help to make my home feel unique and cozy. I had fun shopping with my decorator Giselle and she did a great job bringing everything together. In less than a month she completely furnished my place, besides my sofa, which I was happy that she liked! The experience was great overall. I enjoyed my time with her, I didn't have to spend too much of my own time working on it, and I love my new home. It looks like no one else's in the building and now my neighbors keep asking me what or who helped me. I had a very good experience designing my newly purchased 1 bedroom apartment with Decor Aid. They called me once I signed up for a free design consultation and listened to the details of my renovation project. I felt that the project coordinator had a really good knowledge about interior design and in particular the renovation process. I sent in my floor plan and a link to my pinterest account. The next day I received suggested meeting times and some background about my assigned designer. The meeting took a little more than 1 hour and I felt a real chemistry with the designer. She listened to me, took many notes and gave helpful tips. The project coordinator sent me an overview of the design work with the amount of time. It stated a fixed fee and I called them to ask more questions and to remove some items which I wanted to find myself. The designer did not have an easy task because I tried to incorporate different styles and items from my travels to create a hotel/resort like feeling. Needless to say New York 1 bedroom apartments don't have the space to make it easier. I really loved the presented ideas and went ahead almost purchasing all the suggested items. Their purchasing team handled all the orders for me and got me some good discounts. I decided later to add the items, I planned to find myself, back in and purchased more hours. I'm not the one to usually write reviews but now that the apartment is ready, I absolutely love it. During my housewarming party a friend actually said "It looks almost like a boutique hotel". Katie created an ingenious space plan that allowed us to put our exceptional amount of clutter neatly behind closed doors. Katie's space plan allowed us to really maximize the space in ways we hadn't thought of. She also researched different ideas for furniture for our offices. And when we switched it up on her at the last minute saying we wanted to go with Ikea furniture, she provided a detailed purchase list that I was able to take to Ikea and have them order everything I needed. I recently booked an initial consultation, where I had two designers come to my place. At first I was wary, as I had a very limited budget for my apartment and wasn't sure what could be done, but the girls came up with a proposal which didn't require a single furniture purchase. They rearranged, repainted and completely de-cluttered my space - it looks completely new! At the end I decided to add one vintage chandelier, which they helped me to find with a great discount. This is the FIRST time I've ever bothered to write a Yelp review and the only reason why I'm doing it is because the service I received from DecorAid far exceeded my expectations! As a background, I'm a first time home/apartment-owner and I needed serious "grown-up" help with my place. Moreover, I was going to get a washer/dryer installed in a spare closet and I didn't know how to reconfigure it. I emailed DecorAid for a 1-hour consultation. They responded immediately and soon, not 1, but 2 designers came to my place! I peppered them with questions like where to put certain stuff (noob that I am) and they offered some advice on the spot and took pictures of my closet. Within a week, they gave me a presentation of their various design suggestions for my place AAAND also provided not 1 but TWO detailed closet layout options to give to my contractor! They also happily gave me electrician recommendations (that I actually used. no need for Angie's List!) and double-checked with their contacts to ensure that my contractor was charging me a fair price. They are just super knowledgable about lighting/decorating/design/layout/NYC building code requirements (yuck)/etc and saved me HOURS of research that I would've had to do otherwise on my own. I never realized that this level of service came with just their most basic package (I was too cheap to spring for anything more). Also, their recommendations come with NO STRINGS attached. I was worried I'd have to pay for more stuff or be forced to buy stuff but all they do is give you ideas and information and you make the decisions (kinda like a personal shopper but so much better!) Another plus is that they work around your schedule. I really DID NOT want to take any more time off from work (after so many plumber/contractor/electrician appointments that are never on time!). They happily accommodated my request for weekend/after-work visit/calls and were always super prompt. For anyone who thought that an interior decorator costs way too much money (um, that would be me) should SERIOUSLY try DecorAid out. We had a fantastic experience with our designer, Mandy. She very quickly pointed out that our accent wall idea was a bad one (in a very nice, gentle way) and then steered us away from the colossal mistake of going with a saturated color which I'm sure we would have been annoyed with after a month of having it up. She was kind, professional, extremely knowledgeable and at the end of it all, I gave her a hug because that's how much she helped us! This firm is great! I had a very low budget project but a big vision to revamp my home. They sent Lauren as the decorator. She was wonderful--very friendly, down-to-earth and helped me create a vision for the space. We're not done yet, but I anticipate that she'll support me as I create a new home. What I like best is the unpretentious nature of their firm. They treat low-budget projects (like mine!) with the same care and attention as high-end ones.
