I am very happy with my decision to use Affordable Interior Design and with Stephanie, the designer I worked with. First, the design questionnaire was excellent - especially for someone like me who doesn't know much about interior design. It was able to identify my design preferences by showing different living rooms and asking which ones were to my liking. In addition, its questions served as a great preparation for the home visit, so Stephanie came well prepared for our meeting. Stephanie was very creative, professional, and helpful throughout the process. When she visited my place, we decided on a design together, in an efficient process, where she was able to translate my needs and preferences to interior design decisions and furniture choices. After two weeks, she assembled a furniture shopping list, within the budget I requested. I purchased all items she suggested. The furniture items were sourced from many furniture stores and I felt she did an excellent job finding items that were beautiful, fit the overall design, and reasonably priced. I get nothing but compliments about my place (even from my Architect friend who is quite stingy with design related complements...). Well done Stephanie! As to the cost-effectiveness of the service - had I done this process myself (even with friends help), I would have surely spent more time, more money, getting worse results. Finally, the service was well structured and transparent. Good stuff overall. read more

Paulina helped us get our dream bathroom! She has such a great eye and helped us save money on a lot of materials too because she knew the right places to look. It's my favorite room in our house now, and I'm excited to work with AID on our kitchen renovation too. read more

Affordable Interior Design by Uploft - Our after photo of our bathroom. It was seriously so ugly before this that I didn't take a before picture. - Interior Design Near Me - New York, New York

I loved Affordable Interior Design so much I used it twice. I worked with Betsy both times - first moving into a one bedroom from a studio and getting all new furniture, then moving into a new one bedroom with a totally different layout and re-using as much as possible. As a bachelor without design sense it was one of the best investments I could have made. It saved me so much time and anxiety about which pieces to pick and every single person who has visited has been amazed by how nicely decorated my apartment is. The process is exactly as described by other reviewers - introductory call, questionnaire, in home visit, and follow up call a week or two later with a mood board and shopping list. Betsy was incredibly personable and easy to talk to. I was also impressed with how much her suggestions matched my style even though I didn't have the vocabulary to communicate it. Everything fit within my constraints and preferences and Betsy helped with follow up questions and suggestions as pieces came in and as I decided to swap out a few pieces. read more

I've worked with Betsy on several different projects for my house now over the past 8 years, all as virtual consults because I'm in CA. I absolutely love working with Betsy and have learned so much from the multiple experiences, the most important lesson being - don't question Betsy's guidance! :-). I like to think I have good taste but that doesn't mean I know how to pull a room together. Plus if left to myself, I would stay limited to what I know. And working with Betsy helped me realize I didn't know that much. If you ever feel like there's something still missing to your space, you know what I mean. I actually worked briefly with a local designer just because I thought it would help to do it in person, but I was never totally comfortable with her because she wasn't as approachable. That's the other thing I really value about working with Betsy and AID... they never make you feel like you can't afford to have a great looking room. They never, ever make you feel uncomfortable about budget or intimidated about the process. I think that's one of the best things about working with Betsy and her team. They make good design assessible. Plus Betsy is an awesome designer. For me, she really "got" me. She knew I like color and pattern so when I asked for a neutral MBR recently because I aspire to have a white room but can never quite keep my passion for color at bay, she came up with such an amazing solution for me and spec'd furnishings and colors (yes, color!) that I would not have thought of. Took me out of my comfort zone at first. But I went with it and I LOVE IT! Below are pics from my MBR and my 18- year old son's room that we upgraded so he could feel like he's in a whole new space for his stay at home freshman year of college. read more

We worked with Stephanie for a common area for a multi family building and for an apartment staging. She is amazing to work with as she listens to what you want and need. She has great design ideas and is very efficient in the way she works. She is perfect with timing and getting everything done. Stephanie will design your space in the most space saving and functional way to fit your needs and desire. Highly recommended for any and all your interior design needs. The staff is nice, but the interior designer I was assigned to wasn't able to get it done...she's not based where I reside (I live in NYC), so I found out the hard way she wasn't familiar with what could/couldn't happen with apartments in my area, plus, she wasn't familiar with the parameters for which the handyman services (provided by AID) could actually help with certain tasks. I was told to make calls to a couple of companies we agreed to use in order to complete the project and ask design-specific questions...which I couldn't understand (especially since it was for companies AID has trade discounts for; I imagined making those type of calls were part of the package I paid for, but apparently I was wrong). Ultimately, I was sold a dream on a concept that couldn't happen (after the initial disappointment from the first reveal call because she didn't focus on what I explained was my design style). I tried to hang in there for an alternative solution for as long as I could, but between the design fee, and a few items I purchased off the curated shopping list which the designer sourced for my project, I'd already spent thousands of dollars...for nothing; I had to stop before it got worse, because I'm disabled with a budget to stick to, and I could only see things continuing in a downward spiral. As I stated in the beginning of this long review...at least she was pleasant. Nevertheless, this experience was a waste of both my time and money....based on these other reviews from the highly-satisfied, perhaps I simply didn't have the right designer for my needs. Ps Response time (which is primarily through email) isn't the best). If I needed to speak with my designer because of how frustrating the email response time was, I had to pay additional money. read more

Affordable Interior Design did a FANTASTIC job of helping me pull together the dining room and living room of my "new" mid-century home (built in 1962). PLUS they did it from over 2,000 miles away (I'm in NM, they are based in NY). From consultation to design to the order process everything went smoothly. Betsy and her team really understood my taste and desires for my little desert oasis and they delivered quickly, efficiently, and on budget! I have had numerous guests who have commented on how elegant and perfectly styled the place is. I couldn't be happier! read more

I love this company. I have a studio in New York that needed change, as I was working from home because of covid. Tired of looking at same old stuff. Stephanie worked with me and was fantastic. Very responsive to emails which was important as am clueless on what to do. I once called on a Sunday, because I was at a furniture store, and needed help on a couch. She responded right away. Absolutely love what she did. It is a whole new apartment that looks so much roomier than it is Highly recommend read more

I can't say enough about Affordable Interior Design. I recommend them to everyone who is looking to improve their living space. We first used them a few years ago in our NYC apartment, and they transformed the place from basically a dorm room into a beautiful space with functional living areas that is a pleasure to be in. We returned to the company a few months ago to help us design and furnish our new beach house, which was built in 1903. Stephanie has been unbelievable. She drove to our house (1.5 hours from the city) on 3 separate occasions and spent many hours with us there doing 4 3-room makeovers, including outdoor spaces. We started with an empty house and Stephanie has provided us with one beautiful design after another. She worked one on one with my 3 teenaged daughters to help them envision and choose items for their rooms. My husband and I are terrible at visual art and all we had to do was give Stephanie an idea of the colors we like and the general style (old-fashioned to match the age of the house, but beachy too) and she took off from there. She found breathtaking pieces at affordable prices and we cannot wait to set everything up and live in the gorgeous spaces she has envisioned. The company also has a shopping service where they buy all the items for you using their designer discount. Maggie is our shopper and she is very sweet and helpful as well. Megan coordinates everything for us and is super-personable and very responsive. Use Affordable Interior Design! They will change your life like they changed ours. read more

Everything I hoped it would be. I recently moved from Manhattan to the 'burbs and was struggling with creating a cohesive look with my existing furniture from a 1-br apartment in a larger house. Paulina came to work on two rooms in my house (living room and home office). She asked great questions to get a sense of my style, helped steer me in the right direction, and provided a great curated list of suggested items within a few days. She also provided extremely specific instructions on where to hang art, place the furniture, rugs, etc., so it was idiot proof. Additionally, she followed up with revised mood boards based on my feedback from the follow-up phone call, and provided revised sites to purchase items from. The staff was incredibly professional and the process was so quick. Loving all the purchases and my house looks so much more "finished." Highly, highly recommended. read more

I did the Makeover package for an alcove studio apartment in Manhattan. It started off with a 15 minute intake call. After the call, I filled out a questionnaire and a designer came to my apartment for 2 hours to look at the space. I then received an item list a week and a half later. There was a follow up call to discuss the item list and, based on the call, I received a few alternative items to purchase. Overall, I was pleased with the experience. I thought the designer did a very good job of finding furniture that met my needs and objectives. My only gripe is that they weren't as responsive as I would have liked - some times days would go by without a response to an inquiry. That being said, I thought it was a good service and I would recommend using them. read more

After 2 years of living in my dull undecorated apartment I decided to contact Betsy for the 3-hour budget plan. Being a musician, money is always tight. I didn't want to spend any money on decoration that I wasn't sure was going to work in my apartment or not. This plan seemed like a great deal since I had absolutely NO IDEA what to do when it came to interior decorating. For the first hour, Betsy help me decide on how to arrange my furniture so the living space would serve all my needs, but also followed good feng shui. I have a huge piano in my living room which took up half the space leaving barely any room for a tv/lounge area. I didn't even have a place to eat. Betsy somehow helped me figure it out so I could have all my needs fit in one space..without making it looked cramp (in fact my living room looks even bigger now!) The second hour consisted of us figuring out what kind of furniture and decoration was needed. It was like taking decorating 101. I learned so many things about decorating that I could apply to not only in my current space but future spaces if I ever decide to move. In the 3rd hour, Betsy emailed me links to furniture that she personally picked for me. I really loved all of her selections and the fact that they all fit within my $1000 budget was amazing. I started implementing the ideas I learned from her the minute she left. 2 days later the apartment already looks like a different place. The $275 is totally worth it if you are in a situation like me and really have a desire and motivation to redecorate your apartment. Betsy will leave you with a strong foundation and the confidence to make future design choices on your own. And in case you need extra help in the future, you can always hire her by the hour. read more

Betsy is the best. She transformed my apartment from a boring, tasteless, new place to live into a HOME. Her fees are reasonable and well worth it because I never could have done it on my own. My $79.99 mirror from Ikea she recommended gets me complements from all my visitors who think it was more like $400 or so. And she made me love west elm while recommending the more affordable pieces there. And the best part is Betsy tells it like it is. Consider this exchange: Me: "Betsy, where should I put this lantern I bought in Europe?" Betsy: "I think it would look best in the closet." Me: "Oh okay, what should I do with it in there?" Betsy: "Put it in box so people don't see it." Highly recommended! read more

Classes are structured in a very practical manner. It sets up a basic layout and gives you a foundation about what to take care of step-by-step. And yes, Betsy is absolutely an amazing presenter. That being said, it's not an inspirational design class focusing on creativity like in school, Betsy's lectures contain extremely dense information and tons of directional tips such as what to look and where to buy. For most people, that probably works. For me, one of the down sides is that I am not a Parisian, Bohemian, or edgy romanticist, but rather, a fonder of minimalism, Japanese/northern European style. I doubt Betsy shares the same taste as I do. So I would have to be my own designer. But thanks so much for opening the door of interior design. It totally helps me think and learn going forward. Affordable Interior Design is very unpretentious - could be a little bit more classy in my opinion. Last but not least, I love Betsy's fast-paced speech and lovely humor. read more

I am incredibly happy with my experience with Affordable Interior Design. Stephanie, the designer I worked with, was fantastic. I was impressed with the initial layout she designed during the initial home visit. Stephanie was able to interpret what I was looking for even though I'm sure I didn't do the best job of explaining it. However, I was blown away with the moodboard during the reveal call. The pieces were things I would have never picked but somehow totally me. I was obsessed with 90% of the pieces immediately. Stephanie easily adjusted the moodboard/shopping list for the few items I was unsure of. I really loved the mix of higher-end and mid-range pieces she chose. The result was a living room that makes me smile every time I enter it. I really feel the home visit is what makes Affordable Interior Design stand out. It was a nice mix of personal experience and online service. I had tried other online designers and the experience was impersonal. I would definitely recommend Stephanie and Affordable Interior Design to anyone who needs a little help bringing their design vision together. read more

After months of struggling to properly decorate our condo (smart Manhattan developers know how to maximize square footage for sale to increase prices but do not always create livable space for the resident), I researched interior design companies and found Affordable Interior Design via Yelp. My husband and I were not looking to create a showroom of our home; what we wanted was a warm, welcoming environment in which to live. We worked with Allison R in Summer 2016 to help decorate our living room and master bedroom. The entire process was a delight. I worked in management consulting for many years and appreciate a streamlined process focused on positive results as well as an engaging client experience. Betsy (the owner) was our first point of contact. Our email interactions with Betsy were prompt and professional. Prior to meeting with Allison, we were sent a questionnaire which probed deeper into what our vision for our home would be both aesthetically (color palette, style, etc.) as well as what we want our home to be from a living perspective, i.e. how does our home function for us and how do we want it to feel. In our work estimate, we opted to decorate two rooms of our home. Post-questionnaire submission, Allison visited us at home. She was prepared, punctual, an excellent listener (thank you Allison...you made us feel heard), and very knowledgeable (just by viewing our space she was able to make excellent estimates about rug sizing, furniture placement, etc. but did also take precise measurements to ensure accuracy). She made sure she knew which items we were willing to replace as well as items we wanted to keep. Post meeting, Allison scheduled a call with us to go over our design board. She walked us thru why she chose certain pieces and how they would work in our space. We were also given electronic link suggestions as to where we could purchase the items. We emailed Allison a couple of times for clarification about our design board and she was responsive and thorough each time. Overall, I am very pleased with Allison's suggestions and her vision of our home. We purchased items piece-meal so it took us a bit longer to get everything we wanted but that was our choice. Thank you Allison for helping us pull together a look that not only visually appeals to us but also functions for our lives! read more

I'm so behind on leaving feedback for Affordable Interior Design, and particularly Kelsey Surock. I worked with her almost a year ago, and I can honestly say I am still so happy with the results. From start to finish, it was a completely spectacular experience. From the get go, Betsy was very helpful coordinating and scheduling with me. I was on a bit of a time crunch, and they totally took that into account and made it work! I had moved into my lovely, albeit sterile, new development-y apartment 5 months earlier. I love pre-war apartments and old finishes, so this was an uphill battle for sure. I was really hoping to make it look and feel more like home - like a personal sanctuary in this crazy, busy city. I have a pretty specific design aesthetic, but I don't have the time and patience to source items, and I'm particularly terrible at finding rugs, lamps, and curtains that work with a space. I had most of the main pieces I needed, but I really needed help pulling everything together. And my walls were a very sad, blank slate. I feel like Kelsey did a good job of understanding my aesthetic. I was very pleased with the items she sourced and her vision for the space. She completely transformed my living room and bedroom walls with interesting artwork and placement. She designed a gallery wall that I just love. I'd say I purchased about 60% of the items Kelsey suggested, and I've been happy with all of them. I've gotten so many compliments on how lovely my apartment is, and that's 100% thanks to AID. The most important aspect for me was the timing. I was in a rush to get items in place before I had a VIP guest coming to stay (new, long distance boyfriend!), and Kelsey literally moved her schedule around to make it work. I was so grateful! If you're hesitating at all, do it. You won't regret it! read more

I'm so happy with these guys! I worked with Paulina and she was so wonderful. She did a great job of capturing my style while still encouraging me to be a little more creative. I love that there's zero pressure to buy. Some of the pieces Paulina recommended were so unique that I bought them right away. Others, I've been happily hunting Craigslist for similar (or even exact) copies. I'm slowly accumulating things, but once everything is done I'll put photos on here. On a totally random side note, my windows cannot have curtains so I thought I was doomed to high-priced custom blinds. Nope! Paulina found me blinds that were completely affordable and great-looking. That alone was worth like half the fee. Now I can sleep-in haha. read more

This review is way overdue! We hired Betsy 4 years ago to design our one bedroom apt and she did not disappoint. We didn't have an idea of how we wanted our apt to look other than we wanted to be functional, wow our friends and not be broke after doing it. After a short questionnaire, Betsy (who has a great sense of humor) walked us through the entire process, told us exactly what to furniture/pieces to get and where to place it to get the look we were looking for all at a budget we were comfortable with. Every person who has come through our apt since has commented on how great our place looked, which shows that great design doesn't have to be expensive. Our house was furnished with a mixture of old, new and hand-me-down furniture of various styles and looks. I needed help bringing everything together and making the mish-mash of styles and furniture feel cohesive and "homey." Not only did I have a limited budget, I wanted to keep most of the furniture we already had. After reading mixed reviews of Home Polish and Havenly, I came across AID and have been so pleased with the results. Paulina provided a beautiful design and a concrete, easy plan for implementing it. She met with me for a few hours, in which we discussed everything, and she took pictures and measurements. Shortly thereafter, we had a call in which she presented me with a detailed floor plan complete with measurements that I could simply give my handyman, as well as a list of items to purchase (with direct links to the stores), and a mood board which gave me a sense of how everything would look once it came together. This was a perfect solution since I don't need assistance in purchasing or installing items in my home. Paulina is an incredible designer. She transformed our living/dining room, and master bedroom. She quickly grasped what I wanted to achieve and stayed within the various constraints I had in terms of budget, the items I wanted to keep, and various practical concerns of a family with young children. Even before I bought a single item, Paulina vastly improved our space simply by rearranging our existing furniture. I've slowly been adding to the design with the items she recommended, and the result is a cohesive, polished look that works with our family - even with two children under the age of five. I'm sure she has many clients, but she the level of individual attention I've received and her knowledge of my home and what I wanted to achieve made me feel like I was the only one. read more

My husband and I recently worked with Betsy to design the living area and bedroom of our one bedroom rental. We had been living in a studio for a few years and it was time to upgrade. We were wilting to part with most of our existing furniture and wanted to create a space that we looked forward to coming home to and would allow us to host friends and family. We had started looking online and thought we had some great ideas in mind. After visiting a few furniture stores we realized we were going to overspend on furniture and it would not come together like all the pictures we saw. We came across Affordable Interior Deign and decided to reach out. They got back to us right away and scheduled the onsite visit to work with Betsy. Before the onsite, Betsy gave us a few questions to fill out and asked for a few pictures of ideas we liked to get sense of our style and personality. During the onsite Betsy came up to our apartment and walked us through several layout options weighing the pros and cons of each. Once we decided collectively on the layout, we talked budget, furniture and measurements. Betsy provided exact measurements where all the furniture and wall hangings should be placed. After we finished our walkthrough Betsy said she would have our furniture picked out in a week. We scheduled a call with Betsy within the week as promised. During the call Betsy provided us with options for all the furniture items we picked out and going over why she picked each item. The ending result is a living/dining room and bedroom that is comfortable, practical, stylish and a place we love coming home to every day! read more

Paulina from Affordable Interior Design was AWESOME. She came to my home and within 10 minutes had given me enough suggestions to make the cost worth it. She worked within my budget, we went back and forth on email several times on different ideas, I sent her pictures of items she had suggested once they arrived and she sent me tips on how to make them look best. She is clearly a design expert giving me best practices like how high to hang all pictures and how far apart, size and height of bed side tables and matching lamps, how to make things match but not overly so. She was really good at helping me decide where to spend what money and what I could save on. It was so great to consult with a professional who had an eye for what works together and what size furniture would work. My husband and I were impressed from the very beginning with Affordable Interior Design. The intake process is very professional: first there is a phone consultation, followed by a questionnaire to help them understand the client's taste, as well as their needs and goals for the space. Working with Allison R. was great. We really felt that she understood us. She helped us work out a solution to our slightly tricky living room space planning. By the time the home visit was finished, we had the layout figured out. About a week later, we had a phone conference to go over the mood boards and shopping list that she had put together for us. All of the items she sourced were perfectly within our budget, and where we weren't 100% sure about some of the initial suggestions, she came up with alternatives. By the end of the phone conference, we had not just a list of items to buy, but a structure/vision for our space that allowed us to go shopping with confidence - even where we deviated (slightly) from the list, we did so confident that the items we bought would fit the vision she helped us shape. As the deliveries trickle in, it's a pleasure to watch our space come together in a way that simultaneously perfectly reflects our taste and is better than we could have come up with without help. read more

Our experience with Affordable Interior Design was all that we hoped for and more. I can't say enough about our designer, Paulina. Highly recommend! Exceeded all expectations. Helped us to to design and decorate our new big 2-bedroom apartment in South Brooklyn, and we are extremely happy with all of the recommendations and love the look of the place. Betsy actually chose many of the pieces (from shower curtain to mirrors to table lamps to desks to area rugs) we needed to buy and it was worth it. Besides saving me the time I would have spent searching for things, Betsy knew exactly what size articles would fit where. (Friends are really impressed and asking where I bought my things). Essentially, all the work was done for us. Guests who come over cannot stop complimenting on what we have done with the place. My favorite part of what Betsy chose is the artwork to match the apartment. (No, let me rephrase that, EVERYTHING that Betsy chose and recommended was perfect for the place and perfectly matched to each other, in both color and style). I cannot stress enough how glad I am that we found Affordable Interior Design and a knowledgeable professional who knew so much more than we ever could. The details: we chose the 5-hour plan and also buying the articles for us according to the style the we chose (approximately 35 articles, including drapes, bedsheets, blinds etc). In retrospect, this was a perfect decision and saved us a ton of time and probably money, as well. (The articles were chosen according to our budget). We had no idea how to decorate the place and what furniture goes where, and Betsy outlined all the details for us perfectly, down to inches (with our feedback, of course). (We also discussed built-in closets and putting up some walls, so this was a large project). We recorded Betsy's detailed instructions and followed her recommendations to the detail. The results: thumbs up and perfect! We are a busy working couple and we simply have no time nor knowledge for decorating a new place. Highly recommend Affordable Interior Design. A++. An absolute must. Thank you, Affordable Interior Design!! This was so much fun! We will see you for our next project! Y and I. read more

I never thought I could afford an interior designer until now. Betsy has a truly unique and helpful business model.
