To begin with, there is a shortage of ophthalmologists in the area. Dr. Schick's entire staff has a maintained a positive attitude despite the impatience of a few. They treat everyone special, and sometimes that means a little extra time with some. They treat us all special, and none of us is above anyone else. Give 'em a break please! As far as care goes, second to none. Dr. Schick is great, and he has passed down his knowledge and work ethic to his daughter, Stephanie. She, like her father, give excellent care to us. Today is December 14, 2021. After my eye exam last year involving dilation Dr. Harold Schick's office failed to provide a plastic sunglass cover to shield my eyes from dangerous Sunlight UV rays. Blinded, I had to cover my eyes with my hands to reach my car and wait an hour so my eyes could handle the sunlight and see again to drive. Additionally, his office is booked 9 months out. I have nothing but great things to say about this office and especially Dr. Stephanie! The front desk staff and nurses were very welcoming before I met with the doctor, and the waiting room was peaceful/very well decorated. I was seen very quickly, didn't even have to wait. Dr. Stephanie was seeing me for my very first stye and she made me feel so at ease, answered all my silly questions willingly and happily, provided excellent care, and even gave me great home remedy tips to help the stye while I waited for the antibiotics to do their job. I had the worst experience TWICE! The two stars are for the two very nice receptionist that ONLY do the temp checks and check ins. They were welcoming and smiled. The other two Hispanic ladies sitting up front are very rude, didn't smile, and barely made eye contact when I spoke to them. Very short with words and not much investment in customer service. One sits in the scheduling appts area (black hair w/bangs). She's the rudest. Looks like she hates being there or talking to people. Like why be THAT person if you have to talk to people but don't want to? The other sits in the middle without a window/view of lobby area. My first experience-it was very full which I understood as I was going in as an add on due to emergency issue with my eye. But they did call me back fast. Dr. Schicks dtr, Stephanie told me she thought I had metal in my eye so, that's prob why I was called in faster. She was very short and quick with her answers, told me she didn't have time to dilate my eye today 'cuz of all the clients and that would put her out until the end of "her day," to check it. I could understand again, but she made me feel like I was more of a hassle than a customer. I was concerned about my vision and damage. She was very vague when asked if my eye would be ok until the "Wednesday" she wanted me to come in on. I am wondering if my asking this made her change her mind? Cuz She then stated to come in next day morning, 8 am soon as they open. I had to ask her if I needed a driver and how long this would take as she didn't readily provide this info to me. Good thing I did cuz I did need a driver. She walked out as I'm still talking so I follow her out (as this was her way of saying she was done). Then, I go to the front where I'm to wait to have appt set. that's where I meet the rude scheduler with bangs. She continues to do her paperwork and ignores me for about 3 minutes. Not even an "I'll be right with you." Not a smile. Then she asks for my copay, gives me appt card, all while never looking at me. Like a machine. I gave them benefit of the doubt since it was end of day, super busy and I was an add on. At first I thought, I should tell dr about this rudeness as it does reflect her business. Then I thought, "why?" She seemed too show me the same disregard. I realized that sometimes it's trickles down from the top or may be a reflection of the stress the top is giving to the reception area, to cause them to respond to clients this way? So I don't. Next morning, Stephanie hasn't arrived at 8 am my appt time. However I get called back, I get dilated, and wait. Stephanie is better but still kinda vague still with her answers about my concerns with my eye. She tells me everything good and to go to ER or them if gets worse. Says to come back in 6 weeks. Doesn't say if it's follow up or what? Then she's done and starts to walk out AGAIN. I go to the front. Ms. Bangs doesn't look at me again. I ask her if the 5 6 week appt is for a follow up or what. She looks at me (finally!) and say, "uhh.." and shrugs her shoulders as if she didn't know. She then goes back to scheduling. I tell her, "you know what? I'll call later to schedule the appt." they lost me! I really wanted to say, "you're all rude af! I ain't coming back here. Forget it," but I held my tongue. My hubby encouraged me to talk to someone. Because they see a lot of seniors, he stated they need to not treat others the same. My thought was, "To who though?Who cares if they don't? Who's gonna change this if the dr is the same-ish?" Shes not the only doctor in Merced and I don't have to go back to them. Thus my Yelp review to inform others instead. My take-Office always busy, staff running like manufacturers and line workers- getting people in and out, non-personable, not great customer service, they don't seem happy and you don't have to go there. Dr. Schick, your receptionist cost you customers. My husband then tells me that his friend also left them due to front staff a year ago. Not a good trend if they keep that up. read more

My young daughter had an eye injury while at school and I had to call around town panicking trying to find an eye doctor last minute and they graciously welcomed us in to be seen immediately. Dr. Stephanie Schick was very caring and professional and even made sure to continue to see us over the weekend during normal off hours and she constantly checked in on her/us throughout the next few days. Impressed was an understatement and I cannot recommend her enough. I've had wonderful experiences with doctors in the past and not once have I ever been given their personal number to make sure I could get in touch if need be. Beware:. In November 2018 I saw Dr Schick and again in January for a recheck since the glasses were not working at all. Finally switched Drs and in May the new Dr found that I had a large cataract in one eye and a smaller one in the other which Dr Schick totally missed. No eyeglass prescription was ever going to fix a cataract. He really should have zero stars but office staff tried repeatedly to "fix" the glasses and they did refund my money when I said I did not want any glasses from them. read more

I am ONLY writing this review to hopefully help a new patient from wasting their very valuable time. My daughter (6) was referred here by her primary physician because she did not do well with her basic annual eye exam. Waited 3 months to finally see an optometrist from this office. Here's how things went: We check in. Wait 1 hour and 30 minutes to be seen. The assistant gives my daughter an eye exam. We were then asked to wait, again. Another 45 minutes later, the assistant does another eye exam, only difference is we are in a room. Then asked to wait again. Waited another 45 minutes to be called into a room for Dr. Schick. He walks in, looks at her paperwork, says they are going to try one more thing and give her some eye drops, then he walks out. 45 minutes later, the same assistant walks in, gives my daughter eye drops and says to go wait, AGAIN. 30 minutes later, they are already closing. We were called to the room, Dr. Schick walks in, looks at her eyes and says the eye drops didn't work, come back in 2 days and a lot earlier in the day so we can try the eye drops again. You have no idea how baffled I was. I, myself see Dr. Chen at Costco (who is AMAZING) I do not know why I bothered to bring my daughter here. What Dr. Schick has done in 3.5+ hours, Dr. Chen will do in 30 minutes or less! Staff was not professional. From where I sat, I heard an assistant on the phone w an insurance company giving vital patient information that should be a violation of HIPPA. No consideration for anyone's time whatsoever. I do not recommend this place!! Save yourself the headache and find an optometrist who will value you as a patient and human being! read more

Can't begin to say how happy we are with Dr.Schick and their staff. My dad had surgery on both of his eyes and the results were incredible. His so happy. My dad had previously seen another ophthalmologist for like 4 years but was always denied his surgeries. Once we got referred to Dr.Schick the wait had been over. As a family member that comes with a patient who needs attentive eye care, this place does NOT care. They take forever to call you in. Once they do call you, you have to wait another 30 mins until your eyes dilate. Then, when they finally call you into the room, they only take about 10-15 minutes checking your eyes and talking to you. Unbelievably sad. Atmosphere: Very spacious seating area. Lots of seats and the front desk is nicely located at the center pod. Bathroom is easily accessible (near the seating area). They have a nice magazine rack for everyone (probably because they know they take forever). Customer service: This seems to be a hit or miss, depending on the mood of the front desk ladies that day. The Dr. assistants in the back though are a different story. They talk to you like you need a hearing aid and seems to get frustrated if you are slow in answering their questions. The Dr. doesn't talk much and always gives a shady look. He is just there to tell you your eyes are either good or bad and then rushes you out so he can leave the room. Overall: I don't recommend coming here unless you really can't find another Dr. or can't go anywhere else! read more

I was in Dr. Schick's "care" for over 8 months, other than a prescription for glasses that improved my vision by 25% he did nothing to take care of my eyes. I left his practice with cataracts in my left eye that are so bad I only have 10% vision left in that eye, symptoms of a detached retina and suspected glaucoma. His office certainly billed my insurance for thousands of dollars and kept a steady stream of $50.00 invoices I had to pay out of pocket; but when it came to actual caring for my vision, he was too busy. It doesn't help that the staff communication is almost non existent. I went to a new doctor in Fresno and had surgery for my cataracts in less than a month from my first visit and am having my other issues attended to. Worst office I've ever been to, brought parent and they kept taking him back and forth this was his second visit because the first one they couldn't do the additional exam because they were too busy. They over book like no other place, send you back and forth between exam room and waiting area. I scheduled an appointment at this office about 4 months ago and just got a call today saying the dr. would be gone for 2 weeks & they needed to reschedule me. Not happy. We found a workable date 3 weeks from now but when I asked if there would be a long wait on that day because of him being out she stated first that "he's always fully booked". But when I pressed further & asked if he would be more than "fully booked" she stated "he's always DOUBLE booked". Doctors should not be permitted to run their practice by always double booking. After having had LASEK surgery in South Korea two months earlier, I needed to have my eyes examined as a monthly routine for the next 6 months (as per surgeon's instructions). So I tried to make an appointment with Dr. Schick's office, on the recommendation of my father, who has been a patient of his for some time. However, his secretary, Camille, came across exceptionally rude and unprofessional. She flat out said they couldn't do it. Fine. But when asked about other options, she told me to go back to the hospital in Korea for 1 year of follow-ups! And when told of my surgeon's explicit instructions, she tried to correct me, even though she'd never even heard of LASEK! Her attitude was condescending and unbecoming of a medical secretary, and is, frankly, a little embarrassing. So instead of taking her BS "advice," I just called the next ophthalmologist on my list.
