Very thorough and efficient. I was so impressed with the state of the art equipment with a staff that is just as impressive. Dr. Smith gives you his full attention to listen and address any issues and symptoms. Discovered I had an eye issue which required attention of a rheumatologist that I have been battling with for years. So blessed to have found a good ophthalmologist in Merced! Be sure to allow at least 3 hours on your initial visit but it is well worth it. We only have one pair of eyes. Yelp update on my 2nd annual eye exam yesterday 1/23/19: Yet another good experience getting my eyes checked. Greeted as soon as I walked in, friendly professional staff, very thorough tests on various high tech equipment, evaluation of my medical history then doctor came in to do his evaluations. Zero wait time. This office runs like a well oiled machine. Very organized and clean and friendly plus they look for ways to save you money. Took in 2 pairs of my year old glasses that I didn't take very good care of that were stretched out to be fitted. They did that right away and handed back clean and tight. Asked if they could get the scratches on one daily pair and they said under warranty. I get new lenses for zero cost. My contacts and glasses all being conveniently mailed to my house. Dr. Smith was great. He was very friendly, thorough and knowledgeable! The office was very clean and the staff was friendly. My only complaint was the long wait before my appointment started. However, this could have been because I had somewhat of an emergency and they fit me in the next day. All in all, I'd recommend him highly. read more

The staff here are very friendly. I had to take my son to an eye doctor after some concerns. My husband came here and thought it was a very thorough exam. My son was given a very thorough exam as well and they don't brush off any concerns. I am very happy with their detail and my son's care here. I recommend this place. They can put you on a list to get seen when they have a cancellation. Very clean and they sanitized everything before my son used their equipment. read more

Yes, they're friendly. And incredibly unorganized. They often do not answer during business hours and they don't return emails or voicemails. Their billing is never, ever correct. I don't think anyone in this office communicates with anyone else. An initial eye exam took nearly three hours - most of that was sitting in a room by myself. Whomever handles scheduling isn't even trying to be efficient. This was one of the worst experiences I've ever had with a medical professional/eye doctor. I doubt Dr. Smith has a clue that his office is such a mess. read more

If I could give a complete thumbs down (zero stars - I would). Don't waste your time, money or insurance here. This office is a scam! They will not help to rectify a complaint about an eyeglass prescription. I was told they couldn't reverse my insurance claim, but in fact they can per my insurance company. They are just refusing to reverse the claim and refund my cash portion. On another note, they try and force to your purchase the OptoMap scan, which is not covered by insurance. If it is so important, it would be covered by insurance. Totally unprofessional office help. They are extremely rude. I will NOT be back to this office or doctor. read more

First of all, we have been coming to Dr. Smith for several years. We have never missed an appointment and schedule our appointments a year in advance. They now have a policy if the patient does not call to confirm the appointment, the appointment is cancelled. The problem is that they call the last day so if they are unable to reach the patient, the appointment cancelled. I understand the need to confirm; however the burden of confirmation should not fall on the patient- particularly one who has never missed an appointment. This is not a courteous nor beneficial way to deal with patients. If the office wants a confirmation, they should call ahead of time, not just send a postcard. We have multiple doctors who will either send a text or make a call to confirm. Needless to say, we will be looking at a new optometrist. read more

Great eye doctor. Friendly and helpful. Doesn't treat you like just cattle or just another patient. He'll take the time to listen to you and your concerns and answer all your questions. Dr. Smith is a great doctor. I just recently had my first eye exam with him and I'm overly satisfied. The way he explained the exam so I could understand was exceptional. I actually understood what he was explaining to me and felt much more at peace. Not only did he explain my exam. He also did one of the most thorough exams I have ever had with an optometrist, he makes sure you understand the health of your sight and makes honest recommendations. I have recommended all my family and friends after because I am really satisfied with his services and his staff was just awesome. Oh, and they accommodated me for my schedule since I work 8-5. This was one of the BEST if not THE best eye exam I've ever had. Dr. Paul and his staff are professional, welcoming and very knowledgeable of their products. I'm so glad I drove 2 hours just so Dr. Paul Smith with his expertise and awesome patient attention was able to help me with my headaches and new perception. I love my new bling (glasses). The staff were very good at letting us know what frames look good on our face. My 5 year old was also seen and the patience and experience with children was amazing. We left happy and excited for our new glasses. I highly recommend Dr. Paul Smith, eyes are not something to be taken lightly and the man knows what he's doing. read more

The wife and I went here the other day on a whim. We finally were able to get her eye insurance and needed both contacts and glasses. Every single person was amazing the entire time. From the nice front desk woman who helped us make the appointment, to the techs as well as Dr. Smith himself. We were treated extremely well from booking the appointment, appointmentto the Dr. helping us understand different contact options, and the nice young lady at the end with helping my wife pick out a pair of glasses. We will definitely be recommending this office to anyone that asks. Again nothing but positive through the whole experience. Thank you guys for all the help. read more

I am not one to write reviews on Doctors office's, but I like to read the reviews before I make my decision on that doctor. Dr. Smith does do a great eye exam, however, he will recommend to his staff what he feels best for your lenses/eyeglasses which is over priced, his staff is not honest and up front from the beginning of the initial visit so just an FYI if you mention you are interested in contact lenses (interested) at the end of your visit you will be charged a $60.00 fee. Even if you did not follow through with the contact fitting you will be responsible for that fee. I spoke to the office manager who advised me she would reimburse that fee as I was not properly explained the process by his staff and the doctor disagreed only wanting to credit me my co-pay amount of $10.00. When I discussed my glasses the amount after my insurance coverage with (VSP) was $210.00. I have never paid out of pocket that amount for my lenses. I am not sure what this office is doing but I would definitely not recommend him. Please be cautious and choose wisely. read more

I was a patient for quite a few years and finally had to leave for another doctor. I couldn't stand the rude staff anymore. I wonder if it was really their fault because they didn't seem to be treated very well. It always felt a little oppressive. They messed up orders and insurance billing, and even normal money exchanges. They were constantly trying to upsale me on everything. More than once, they tried to charge me for glass features that I specifically had said no to. I shouldn't feel like I am going to a used car dealership when I'm getting my eyes checked and new glasses. The Dr. was constantly trying to get me to pay an extra amount for this optiscan thing. He told me that it was so superior to the old way of doing exams. I looked it up and found studies that said the exact opposite. He even made us sign a paper saying that we understood that the service was inferior because we didn't want to pay the extra money for the scan. What!? Really!? Now we have a doctor at Gateway optometry that is really passionate about eyesight and not making more money to pay for the new office! read more

I came here after Dr. Meyers retiring, and even suggested for my family to come here. After a year we have had several instances where the staff was rude, and quite frankly had no idea what they were doing. This week the piece that goes on the ear had broke off of my glasses and I went to go see if they can fix it, and they were rude. When asked if they can fix it they instantly said they cant and to use duck tape and had really didnt even look at the glasses. She went on to say if i want to get a new frame its gonna be a lot of money. When I asked if I can make a new appoitment to just get contacts since i havent been seen since january of 2017 she said you were a no show to your appoitment in January of this year she would have to see. I paid the cancellation fee, and had a family emergency so I was unable to make the appoitment. When my family goes in to get glasses the prices dont really match and nearly double the price of what they were at Dr. Meyers. I have seen several posts about how they miss manage insurances and honestly wouldnt put it passed them. read more

I usually just get on yelp to see what I should eat for dinner while out of town, but this place was absolutely amazing, I needed to make sure people know about it. From point A to point B everything was great. I was greeted like an old friend, and then Dr. Smith was able to help me better understand all the things going on with my vision. Staff is rude and don't seem to know what they are doing. My family and i have been visiting this office for many years, but its ridiculous that i bring my money and time to a place where it literally seems that they do not care and even seem to be annoyed by having patients the at times. they cant wait to charge you for any small service yet have trouble and take their sweet time answering any questions you may have. if your having and problems with your eyes might as well by something over the counter be Dr Smith does not prescribe actual medication. read more
