Her baskets were incredibly beautiful and well put together with high end items, yet the cost was extremely competitive. As if I wasn't happy enough with her (by the way, she delivered and carried the baskets into my office), when I ordered a second round of baskets, COVID-19 hit, and I didn't get to deliver them all when I had to abort the project and work from home. The guide at the top knows a lot of history and is more than willing to take your photo. The view from the top is stunning. I like that there are resting spots as you climb that you can rest and look out. The authentic Seminole Chickee Hut was a nice shady spot to talk with other guests. The admission is reasonable, and it all goes to restoration and staffing. I passed this lighthouse so many times when I was growing up, so it was a thrill to visit and and climb. There is a stunning banyan tree that is very impressive. There is also a dock where you can watch the passing boat traffic. We happened to see a pair of Manatees, which was a real plus.

This Ancient Spanish Monastery located in North Miami is an enclave for European architecture and…read morehistory. Built in Spain in 1133, the cloisters and outbuildings were purchased by William Randolph Hearst in 1925 with plans to bring them to the United States. Taken apart stone by stone, it was packed in 11,000 wooden crates. In 1952, two Miami businessmen purchased the Monastery with plans to turn it into a tourist attraction. Time magazine called it "the biggest jigsaw puzzle in history," completed in 1953 and $20 million dollars. Sold to Robert Pentland Jr. in 1964, he in turn gave it to the Bishop of Florida. It is currently owned by the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida. There is a museum with historic Spanish artifacts. While the church is at its core, the monastery surrounded by beautiful gardens and courtyard is an oasis of peace and serenity. A great place for special events. A wedding was being set up while we were there on a Sunday. Open 10-4 Monday to Friday and varies on weekends depending on events. Entrance fee is $10.

I will say, the grounds are absolutely delightful, especially if you go in the Springtime as we did where flowers are all in full bloom, that alone is worth the ticket price. The architecture is exquisite! A feast for the eyes in so many ways. When we came to visit, they were doing renovations. You could see the water damage on the roof and walls, probably caused by one of the many Summer storms, because of that the tickets were at a discount that day but we were still able to appreciate the beauty of Viscaya. There are two cafe's. One in the garden of the main house, and another across the street where farm animals use to be kept. Surprisingly, the food and drinks are reasonably priced. The day we were there, a wedding was going to take place and there was a lot of commotion going on. Fancy tables being set up, fine china, crystal glasses, the whole works. We asked a security guard how much it costs to have a wedding reception there and he said: "Just to rent the space, no tables, no nothing, starting price is 100k". So if you have 100k lying around, and plan to get married soon, this could be an option for you. Jokes aside though; I'd definitely visit again.

The property and history is pretty amazing. As many other reviews have mentioned, a good portion of the rooms and structures are closed for renovations. They have reduced the entry to $20 from $25 but it still was a little disappointing that the casino building and several rooms in the house were closed. Being that it was the offseason, some of the gardens did seem to be past their peak. We hope to return when everything is open in season and tour the whole facility.

Visiting here for the first time during a summer trip in July, it was an accidentally found pleasure in a mall in the Design District - a place that has a blend of trendy shops/boutiques as well as casual restaurants - eateries. Haitian Heritage Museum is w/ in a quaint, intimate space towards the end of the mall-esque area. When you enter, you are gievn a warm greeting, HHM's history is explained, and then you are able to view the exhibit(s). The "Nostalgia Primitive D'Haiti" exhibit that was viewed started in the beginning of Haitian Heritage Month (May 2023) and ended in November 2023. The exhibition consisted of beautiful, colorful, vibrant oil on canvas paintings created in the late 1970s to early 1980s. Artists that included Dambreville, Dave Millevoix, Sully Obin, Rodrigue Richard, Frantzy, etc. Created artwork that depicted country life, everyday in all its beauty as well as painting of gorgeous people & landscapes. Two favorites are artist Rodrigue Richard's "Schoolyard Recess" & "Wedding Day." Absolutely Cool! We were warmly greeted once inside, given a brief introduction to the exhibition, and then began to look around. Sabrina Gustin's photography of La Sud or The South of Haiti was relatable and captivating. Yet, I wanted more. I am grateful that HHM exists and recognize the undeniable effort made to realize but also sustain this dream despite gentrification. However, I would love to see the growth of this museum's footprint over time given the magnitude of our contributions to Miami and the U.S. as a whole. Whenever I return to Miami, I will look forward to visiting HHM as part of the self-guided tour of Little Haiti Miami that I did not have the time to complete. Kenbe la HHM!
