There's nothing quite like the family owned and operated ice cream shop in your hometown! That's Schaffner's for me. They have recently opened their beautiful, spacious new dining room (which is probably 4x the size of the old building), new drive thru, lots of nice seating, and public bathrooms too!! Same great menu and hardworking staff. Most often the workers are teenagers from the local high school, but they really bust their butts to get food and ice cream out quickly. There's usually a short wait, it's definitely not fast food; but please be patient & remember you're supporting local. I think they always have 6 flavors of soft serve now, a few rotate every couple weeks while the basics are always available. And you can get pints of any of them to take home too! My favorite is the pumpkin, which usually only comes around in the fall. But their black raspberry is the local favorite around town! Skip the franchise down the road and support a local family business instead; you'll thank me later! read more

When I got back to work to eat it there was no chicken on the salad. The salad itself was prepared great, just no chicken. When I called to let them know there is a recording. I would give Schaffner's a 5 star rating if they brought back their steamed buns! We frequent this now bigger shop about 3 times a summer being from out of town. My father used to go on and on about how Schaffner's used to have the softest steamed buns around. I found out quickly that the process of steaming their buns went by the waste-side. I feel that this kind of bun makes the food more enjoyable than just a regular toasted or plain bun. read more

Good place for ice cream. Never, NEVER, order hot food. Overpriced and not even remotely good. I believe the buns were from their original opening in 1959. The mac and cheese they proudly displayed as being a new item by the register was basically plain macaroni with only slightly melted cheese throughout. 3 bad sandwiches, 3 mediocre sides, one sundae, and 2 regular drinks hardly justifies the near $45 it cost. I was in Baltimore to meet a client at the Library. The library was closed, but that's another story. We ended up on the picnic benches outside of this place. I went in and got an amaretto iced latte concoction...it was delicious. No seating inside, and it's not a "Drive Thru". You must park and walk inside to order. Great "old school" feel, a real community treasure as you can tell with all of the baseball team photos, etc. on the walls. Great place to stop for a "treat" while in Baltimore! read more

It is similar to Dairy Queen, but it's a family-owned business. They do have different flavors of soft serve ice cream and the flavors vary during the season they are open. Make sure you have cash, as they don't take the plastic cards or your cell phone payment app. There is no indoor seating, so you either take it with you or eat it outside. read more

This little ole shop on the corner is very old school & I love it! Has an option for "drive in" but I got confused on how that worked seeing how they didn't have an order board outside so decided to come inside despite how busy it seemed. Came in around 7pm last night and it was pretty packed, more so because their waiting area/service counter area is pretty small so you either had squeeze in or just wait outside for your turn. First time coming so not sure if it's like this on the daily or just because of the Baltimore festival yesterday. Either way, I didn't wait in line for very long! I got a large PB milkshake and a medium mint chocolate chip. First let me tell you how big the 'large' was....oh my goodness it was huge (next time I'll take a pic-there will definitely be a next time) and the crazy part is they have an "XL" option. The medium was like a large. $7 for both of these delicious drinks. The milkshakes were so, so, good. Workers there are very friendly and they work pretty good under pressure! A what seems a respected long standing local establishment in Baltimore, there seems to be a steady flow of people stopping in here. It's open during the warmer months, not sure about fall and winter. I do know kids come over after school to grab and go. It's soft-serve ice cream. If they don't have the exact flavor, they have syrups and mix-ins. Unfortunately, they don't have a mint chocolate chip soft-serve, so they used (I didn't see, but am assuming) a mint syrup, and I couldn't taste it. It was basically vanilla. The chocolate shavings get pretty chopped up in the mixer, so that was a bit of a bummer. My niece got their daily special - peanut butter - and that thing tasted like eating JIF from a spoon!
