I am working in Maine this week and the Scarborough Grounds is across the street. It's a beautiful building and has a super northeast cozy feel. The staff are super nice and when you walk in you are hit with the aroma of coffee and delicious baked goods. The selection of baked goods is amazing. The choices are almost too much. My wife and I are always looking to try new to us coffee spots. Today was our first visit to Scarborough Grounds and left not that impressed. I will say this review is not factoring in food as we did not order any so maybe that's where they shine the brightest. Being located on Route 1 I suspect make them a popular spot for tourists to visit. Plenty of parking available which is a plus and they do have a drive thru too. The overall vibes inside are kinda your typical coffee shop that serves food. Nothing off putting but also nothing that sets them apart or makes it memorable. When we stepped inside the line for ordering was about just as far as it could stretch inside and we had an extremely long wait to place our order. The staff definitely seemed overwhelmed and an extra person or two would have went a long way. Drink wise we liked the sound of their specials but unfortunately they were out of blueberry flavoring so chocolate covered blueberry latte was not available. Very disappointing. My wife ended getting the Lemon Cookie Latte and I got the S'mores Latte. Both drinks were just kind of alright and lacked flavor as much as many other spots we have been to. When I'm in the area, this is my café. Big windows lots of sunshine and smiling faces. Their baked goods are excellent and their coffee is top notch. I usually get a double espresso. This morning a couple of the machines went down and the young ladies there just switched it quickly to Paper orders so that the service could continue smoothly. And they did it with cheerful, helpful attitudes. I'm gonna sit here for a while near the window. That's closest to the sunshine and do a little work on my laptop. read more

I went through the drive thru today and ordered two breakfast sandwiches and one 16 oz drip coffee and one 16 oz chai latte for $28 total...when I received my $5 chai latte, apx half of the cup was filled with milk foam. I politely asked the gal to remake and she said she would. I waited for a bit and then she told me to come in to pick it up. Ok fine, will but it was a little annoying as I was in the drive thru for a reason. I went inside and was handed a 16 oz chai latte cup and once again the cup was only half full again, by this time I am frustrated, and my order was remade a third time. Though better, it wasn't a full 16 oz but whatever, I left and won't be back. I am not one to typically care about the price of items, but this entire experience has left me a little bitter. If a customer orders a chai latte, just add more warm milk to the top, it's not rocket science. read more

Food is ok but limited gf options. Furniture is dusty and dated, oversized, room can be noisy, awkward in terms of spacial flow. They seem comfortable with their reliable clientele. I have to preface this review with the fact that our order was delivery for breakfast on a trip to Portland. That being said, I've gotten plenty of breakfast deliveries in the past and know that it's possible for it to be better than this. Firstly, the order took longer than expected and from tracking the app, the driver waited a while at the restaurant. That's fine though, I know places get busy on Sunday mornings so that wasn't a problem. Everyone got coffees/lattes and the cups were all half empty which was ... weird. I got a bacon, egg and cheese on wheat toast. It just didn't have flavor? Salt would've been good? I don't know. A friend got a bagel with cream cheese and the smear was so lacking. Another friend said her breakfast burrito was just meh. Lastly, we got a cinnamon roll and it just wasn't in anything? All our sandwiches were wrapped in foil and in a paper bag and the cinnamon roll was just thrown in the bag with no wrap, no nothing. It was just a weird experience that I can't really recommend. We were at your drive-through this morning, 1/27/2004, and waited at the drive-through order speaker for over 5 mins. Finally, we pulled up to the window and waited another 5 mins for someone to acknowledge us to try and place our order. When they finally came to the window, we were told that they could hear others and didn't know what to say and that we would have to go back through the drive-through line that now had a backed up with more than 5 other cars. This ruined our morning, and we were surprised by the lack of compassion for our situation. A simple apology from Kelly at the drive-through window would have gone a long way. Slow service read more

I have been meaning to stop here as I love good coffee. You have to be paying attention to get into the correct entrance, drive thru was a little confusing, I had to park way down back . It was around 4:00 and a lot of high school students were still hanging about . There was not much left for pastries. I ordered a mocha and was really looking forward to it. I was disappointed by how watery it was it was like a watery hot chocolate with a tiny bit of coffee. I almost took it back I probably should have. I saw some of the sandwiches being served, they looked good. I will return to see if I just hit it on a bad day. read more

In an area with several other chain restaurants offering coffee, it's nice to have a local shop like Scarborough Grounds. The vibe is cozy and completely unpretentious. Although I consume copious amounts of coffee, I definitely don't have a sophisticated palate so I appreciate the large yet simple menu. I recommend going in for your first visit just to check out the menu. I tired an iced coffee and egg sandwich, but there was a case of muffins and baked goods that looked heavenly. Place was super cute with lots of nice seating. I ordered a hot cafe mocha and an egg, cheese, avocado bagel and the total was about $10 which is very well priced compared to a lot of other shops in the area. I'm not a big coffee snob, but honestly the worst latte I have ever had. My wife didn't like her cappuccino either. I've had bad cups of coffee that I have forced down because it's something hot and honestly not that bad, but this latte I was served went straight into the trash can....that's a first for me I've never thrown food or drink away. We found this cafe last week while driving in Scarborough. It's a very laid back,informal comfortable venue with indoor and outdoor seating. Great for breakfast and lunch with many choices from their menu of breakfast and lunch sandwiches, soups and salads. The bagels are fresh and warm. Muffins and pastries are also available. There's a wide selection of coffees and teas. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. We liked it so much we stopped again today on our way home to Connecticut. And we had to go out of our way because we forgot where it was. Totally worth it! read more

Came here for breakfast and coffee with the family on our last day in Maine and it was a nice, clean place. They had a ton of muffin flavors to choose from. Their breakfast sandwich was great, and one of my kids loved their everything bagel with cream cheese. Definitely would rather support this small business than the other coffee guys. read more

First of all ... yes I am a coffee snob and love some coffee with depth and flavor and richness without all of the sugary sweet fixins so that is usually how I judge my coffee and Scarborough Grounds did a pretty good job here with this. I will tell you that the experience itself was ok with the drive thru in a pretty weird spot and the window requiring some maneuvering to get to the person working the counter but other than that it is good to see some local brew here in Scarborough outside of D&D and Starbucks. I ordered two beverages for the wife and I .. I the plain iced coffee with skim milk (again I like the flavor of coffee) but it seemed good enough but a bit watered down and couldn't taste the rich flavor that it wanted to showcase (I know this because I like to talk to my cup of coffee from time to time) and for her I ordered the caramel latte and she really didn't like hers but I think she is biased because she likes hers sugary sweet and this wasn't meant to be so sugary. I will come back again to see what a hot one tastes like and not the iced next time around to continue to support the local brew house and to see if the watered down taste was just a one time deal. read more

One of the things I love about it is it's a throwback to the way coffee houses were 20-30 years ago before the refined modern starbuckification of the world, with big leather chairs and couches and cozy decor. You can linger here, read, play games etc. It just needs some live acoustic music on the weekend brunch hours and it would complete that vibe! read more

I've driven past here so many times and never stopped until a few days ago. My boyfriend and I decided to stop for a quick coffee break before going to a movie on Valentine's Day. He has been here often when working and loves the dirty chai. I was struck by how warm and cozy it is inside! There are plenty of seating options including tables and chairs, high top seating, bar seating, and comfy plush chairs/couch. We sat on two of the comfy chairs in the sun and it was indulgent. I could have fallen asleep right there. I got a hot latte and it was perfect! It was quiet on a Thursday afternoon but I'm sure it gets crowded on the weekends. I will definitely be coming back here to do my homework or read a good book (and of course people watch). I can't wait to try their other drinks and maybe a breakfast sandwich as well. read more
