I had a fantastic dinner here celebrating my friend's birthday with beautiful views of Lake Lucerne, delicious food, and amazing service. I would give this place 6 stars if I could! We were traveling to Switzerland to celebrate my friend's birthday, so I wanted to make sure that on the day of his birthday, we had a nice meal to celebrate, and Scala didn't disappoint! The restaurant is located in the Art Deco Hotel Montana. I made a reservation on their website a couple weeks in advance with the note that we were celebrating a birthday, so they gave us one of the best tables with a view by the window. From the moment we stepped in, we were greeted with impeccable service, from the coat check to letting us try the house wine before committing to the complimentary birthday dessert. It was the best service by far that we received at any restaurant during our trip. The meal started off with a delicious complimentary baguette, paired with regular butter and curry butter. The baguette was super crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and both butters were fantastic. We also each got a glass of their house wine for $10.50 each. Both the red and white house wines were delicious. One of the reasons I chose Scala is because the menu is very vegetarian friendly. There were multiple options for my friend. We had a large lunch and weren't super hungry, so we shared one appetizer and each ordered an entrée. The tomato carpaccio ($28) was delicious when paired with the fried burrata. My entrée was the braised veal cheeks ($56 for a large portion), which ended up being one of the best braised meat dishes I've ever had. The veal cheeks were super tender and flavorful in every bite and went well with the saffron risotto and spinach that comes with it. It was a HUGE piece of meat, and by the end I was struggling to finish, but I managed with lots of breaks. My friend got the burrata lime ravioli ($44) and said it was the best ravioli he's ever had. I tried a bite and I had to agree, it was pretty flavorful and amazing. We were completely stuffed but still wanted to end the meal on a sweet note, so we each got a scoop of their sorbet. I got the strawberry and he got the mango-passion fruit, and as you'd expect, both were on point with their flavors and were exactly what we were looking for in terms of a light dessert. They also came by and presented us with a complimentary birthday cake and candle, which was a pleasant surprise. Halfway through the evening, a pianist came and started playing the piano, so the meal here felt like such a classy and elegant affair. Excellent experience at the bar on a May evening for drinks and food in a classy, jazzy, relaxing setting! ARRIVING: Restaurant Scala is located in hotel Montana. There is a cute small funicular that takes you from the bottom of the street too. We didn't have a reservation when visiting, but our party of four was offered bar seating which we accepted graciously. VIBE AND AMBIANCE The ambiance is really nice, service is top tier (polite, efficient, friendly) and there was a live pianist playing on a weekday evening. There's views of lake Lucerne behind the windows, and the bar is extensively set up and seating on couches or bar seats or smaller table tops are all options. FOOD AND DRINK The menu is smaller but includes pasta, salad, mains, and an extensive drink list. We enjoyed aperitifs including red vermouth and sparkling wine. Food is excellent. The BEEF TARTARE comes in two sizes and also comes with a good portion of toasted bread on the side, with an option to adjust the spice level to taste. There was finely minced onions on one side And a shower of small sprouts on top. The PASTA WITH PESTO was a generous portion and delicious. The STEAK FILET was cooked medium as ordered, and served with an herb butter and roasted vegetables. All were seasoned wonderfully. The salad of the day was also excellent. The house red wine was fragrant, and the rose selection was good as well. SERVICE We never felt rushed at all, and service was polite and friendly and attentive. We enjoyed our stay so much that we would love to come back for dinner in the restaurant itself sometime. Reservations recommended as it seems like this is a popular place. Wonderful! Don't be fooled by the high ratings on Google reviews. The only redeeming quality of this restaurant is the view. Service was extremely slow, and food was down right awful. Worst meal I had in Switzerland and also the most expensive. Dishes felt like try hards. Passion fruit crust did not go well with the veal, which tasted like it was boiled. Sea bass also dry. Lamb chops themselves were good, but none of the other items on the dish complemented it. Scallops and ravioli were okay, but you only get two scallops for the large portion. read more

I would rate Scala Restaurant a easy 8 Star if I could. I was in Lucerne Christmas Eve and as a solo traveller far from Canada ,I was nervous being so far from home and all alone. I should only post how incredible the Christmas Eve Dinner was but I could not give it the praise it deserves,....it was brilliant. Previous dining experiences in different restaurants would always be the same, very good food but I was always treated the same. They would put me out of the way into some secluded spot in the restaurant, if possible, not to be seen it seemed. I walked into Scala Restaurant reception area and I was surprised how warm the reception was. They knew I was alone and as she escorted me to my table, I could see the restaurant was full with families and couples enjoying the night together and my heart sank that I would be hidden from everyone...that was not the case. My table was next to the windows overlooking Lucerne. Very nice. I looked out the window and felt comfortable knowing they wanted me to have a great evening and each and every server who came to my table had a smile that would warm the coldest days and with their smiles, any insecurity I had vanished. A great location overseeing lake Luzern .... even where torrential rain is falling !! The service is impeccable. Appetizer: Scallops, beet coulis, summer truffle, parmesan ice cream, orange pana cotta, cured ham. Scallops cooked perfectly but in short supply compared to the " accompaniment s ". Comparatively speaking the truffle was served rather generously. The dish has great freshness and the parmesan in its iced presentation is not overwhelming. The orange pana cotta while good was a bit of an enigma. Main: Barbarie duck with parsnip puree, chard, sautéed rosemary potatoe and blueberries. A very enjoyable main course. Everything was cooked to perfection from the tender duck, to the unctuous parsnip cream, to the blanched chards. A lovely dish. The blueberries did not hurt anything but were more a garnish than a highlight or a contrasting element. Cheese selection: Great cheese selection (you don't get to choose though). The highlight was the Aberot from Dumi (Berner Oberland). Coffee came with an offering of 3 homemade chocolate truffles variations: I tried them all !! Chocolate. Strawberry coconut white chocolate, hazelnut salty milk chocolate, mango lime dark chocolate. The latter was intriguing in the best possible way. read more

Amazing views from this hotel perched high above Lake Luzern. The glass funicular ride up to the hotel was fun too! We had a great relaxed meal, with attentive service. We started with the Montana salad which had a variety of fresh local produce and had the rack of lamb and the fish of the day for our main courses. We both enjoyed our choices and each were prepared beautifully. Along with the meal we ordered a French Bordeaux that was wonderful. We were not as thrilled with the white chocolate brownie, but the raspberry sorbet served with it was delicious. Overall a pricey meal, but for a special evening it was worth it! read more

We are here while staying at the Art Deco Hotel for a weekend in late June. The food was actually extremely well done! I had the chanterelle ravioli and my husband had the veal. Both were very tasty and beautifully plated. The ravioli was incredibly flavorful and soft. The veal was so tender! Our food and drinks were served quickly and the hospitality was exceptional! My only reservation was the price, but it is on par with restaurants of its caliber. If you want amazing views, great food and excellent service, I would stop by Scala! read more

Friendly Staff. Attentive polite and skilled. Elaborate and tasty cuisine: French, Italian with a dash of Swiss flavours and local products. Rather in the more festive price range. The menu is a nice combination of flavours and colours. We tasted a successful match of scallops, truffles with delicious ravioli. It is refreshing to be able to pair the menu with different courses. We stayed in the Hotel MONTANA and ate dinner in their restaurant out on the patio. The hotel is beautiful and the view from the patio is exceptional, overlooking the lake. The service was very attentive, with a complicated menu full of unique ingredients like saltwort. But the food was average at best. Stayed in this great hotel and decided to try Scala, their hotel restaurant. The only reason it gets two stars is the amazing view. The food is average and very expensive. We started with the crab cake which was bland. The Risotto was also average with uninspiring vegetables. The entire presentation of each dish was surprisingly elementary for such an pricey restaurant. We expected great flavors and thoughtful presentations, we received neither. Be sure you locate the funicular from the lake level to arrive at this hotel high on the hill overlooking lake Lucerne. You should definitely come for the al fresco dining in the summer, but you should return anytime for the gourmet cuisine. At first, you may think that this is a special occasion-only destination, but truly the pricing and ambience warrant a visit anytime you can. The food presentations are beautiful to behold and intricate in flavors and textures. We ordered from the ala carte menu, but a multi-course tasting and wine pairing menu is also available. We had long lag times between courses so I can hardly imagine how long it would take to dine through 7 courses. I would come back just for the views. read more
