In this spirit, they now carry forward the tradition of the Buholzer family." It's an old upscale Swiss restaurant famous for its table-side Wienerschnitzel and table-side chocolate mousse. We didn't make a reservation but after 12pm and they had tables available. Not everyone was dressed up. Our server was friendly and very chatty. A few more people with no reservations walked in. Although I was curious about their Wienerschnitzel, the portion is for 2 people and I simply wasn't in the mood to eat that. I've been craving pasta and fish (not together) after a few days in Switzerland. I looked up their menu the day before and planned on getting their lobster pasta. Tagliata vom Rindsfilet Mit Hausgemachter Café de Paris und Pommes Frites: Beef fillet Tagliata with homemade café de Paris and French fries. So, basically, beef fillet with buttery breadcrumbs served with fries. 4/5 Zarter Rocklobster Aug Nüdell, Serviert Mit Hummersauce: Tender rocklobster on noodles served with lobster sauce. This was exactly what I wanted and needed. 4/5 Unsere Hausspezialität Mousse au Chocolat mit Schlagrahm - am Tisch geschöpft: "Our house specialty. Voted the best mousse in Switzerland by the NY Herald Tribune: Mousse au Chocolat with whipped cream - served at the table." I'm not sure I've heard of NY Herald Tribune so, I chuckled because it's not like it's the NY Times. I love chocolate mousse and don't care for awards and newspaper features for it. It's rich, dark, creamy and glorious. The table-side prep lasted about 2 minutes. It's not like they make it from scratch next to your table. The server just whips the cream and fluff up with mousse, serve two big dollops of chocolate mousse under the whipped cream on a plate. 4.5/5 Their best dishes are German and French which makes them truly Swiss. I left feeling satisfied. The restroom is downstairs. They have a wall of fame with pictures of celebrities and politicians that have dined at Old Swiss House such as Frank Sinatra, Pres. Nixon, Pres. Carter and Pres. Johnson, Gorbachev, Federer, etc.

It is actually part of a tennis club but open to the public. We arrived at our appointed time and were worried when our online reservation (go to their website) couldn't be found. When I pulled up my email confirmation we discovered I had booked that date....but for a year from now! (A bit surprised an online reservation would allow submitting a rsvp request that far in advance). Luckily for us they had one table left. A group of 44-all the remaining seats-were expected at 7 so we hustled with our ordering. We started with a charcuterie platter then all got the special, grilled white fish (which was really good). Interestingly, the fish came atop mixed fall vegetables (tasty) then in addition, they bring fries and a pasta salad plus three sauces all served family style to the table-so plenty of food. Loved the bernaise with the fries. To their credit despite the presence of the large group, we never felt neglected or ignored. It was fascinating to watch the precision of the small staff in plating and serving the group given the very small open kitchen. A truly hidden gem off the beaten track and well worth taking the train to dine here.

The staff were also super friendly and welcoming, although service was a tad bit slow. The food is quite expensive but normal for Swiss standards, and honestly felt it was worth it given the large portion sizes. The spicy pork bratwurst was juicy and satisfying but a bit too salty for my liking. I also wish it was a bit spicier! It came with some caramelized onions on the side which were drenched in sauce and paired well with the sausage. The potatoes were buttery and delicious. I've had a lot of potatoes during the past two weeks in Europe and these were among the best. The veal schnitzel was also quite good. It was lightly breaded on the outside and succulent on the inside. We ordered the risotto on the side which was creamy and flavorful, but we had a hard time finishing due to the heaviness of the dish. We didn't have a reservation but were quickly and warmly shown to our covered decktop outdoor table. The evening view of Lucerne and Mt. Pilatas was breathtaking. The ambience was warm. I wished the old steamer could tell us its tales. The service was exceptional (yes, they gave us, without our having to ask, menus in English when we were seated) and the food (I'm not a foody by any means) was outstanding. I had the stuffed chicken breast (stuffed with pistachios and apricots, I think). It was seasoned and cooked to perfection. The accompanying vegetable based sides were out of this world. I would definitlely recommend William Tell. If I'm ever lucky enough to visit Lucerne again, I would DEFINITELY eat here again. However, I'd make a reservation first. I decided to try "The Legendary" Cordon Bleu, which is a mouthwatering pork schnitzel layered with ham and generously stuffed with Lucerne mountain cheese, then expertly breaded and fried. It was delicious--crispy on the outside and oozing with cheesy goodness on the inside. My travel companions opted for a variety of dishes, including grilled fish, fried fish, and a rich mushroom risotto. Each of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I highly recommend.
