After we arrived and checked in to our hotel, we realized we were starving. This restaurant was recommended by our hotel since it was raining outside and close. So glad we experienced such a fine Swiss meal. There were 8 in our group traveling from the US. Our server was excellent in recommendations based on our wants. We opted for the pasta with creamy cheese sauce with onions, roesti (their signature dish), the fish fingers (actually fried fish that was delicious) with crispy fries, the lamb stew and the pork and veal sausage. When it comes to wanting a quaint and cozy European café/restaurant feel, this restaurant is certainly a great stop! Walking in it feels like you are walking into a café that the Snow White, and seven dwarves have sat and had a meal at! I was here with a group of 35 people And I always question if the service and food is going to be good since it's a set menu. They started us off with a butternut squash soup that was delicious especially served with the bread. It would've been nice if they would've had butter to go on the bread. Our second course was a chicken dish with rice and vegetables. The chicken was in a white mushroom sauce, and I just mixed the whole thing together. it looked so disappointing when it came to the table but it actually tasted amazing! I kind of wanted seconds. For dessert we had a chocolate mousse with whip cream, and the mousse was smooth and delicious and chocolatey but not overly sweet. Definitely something I would recommend if it's on their menu. Alles war in Ordnung...or meh, as they say in the States. Our greeting at the door was exceptionally bright and friendly- very welcoming. However, after being seated at a rather dimly lit table, Paulo took our order brusquely- perhaps having a bad day or annoyed at being seated with a party without a reservation? We attempted to communicate needing a second order to take away and somehow that was understood as wanting a box (even before we'd received our food?), however he decided not to bring the box, choosing instead to see if we'd actually need it. The food was as named in the menu, but nothing special: no crisp on the Rösti potatoes, cheese perfunctorily melted on top, Riesen Cordonbleu and French fries presented like a cafeteria order, and Rahmschnitzel noodles were strangely reminiscent of linguini, not German/Swiss Nüdeln. When we were finished eating he returned (no offer of a second beer or second mineral waters with our meal) and we reminded him we still needed our take away order. No apology, just the explanation that it would take some time-so we ordered dessert to pass the time. The mousse was a nice chocolate flavor and whipped crème was a generous portion, but the sliced apple and mandarin orange garnish were an odd addition. Might have just been an off night all around, but the food had neither a home-cooked taste nor the polish of a fine dining establishment. read more

We got their Authentic Lucerne roesti with bacon, cheese, tomato, chive and egg, and their pork sausage with onion sauce and roesti which were both yummy. We also got their chocolate mousse for dessert (since you have to try everything chocolate when in Switzerland) but it was a pretty standard chocolate mousse (good, but nothing super wow). We got seated right away since we went at an off time. It also felt like eating inside a cave. A little on the pricy side, but that's Switzerland for you. When in Rome, errr, Luzern Switzerland, eat what the city is famous for, Stunggis, AKA lamb and vegetable stew. Reservations for lunch made a month in advance guaranteed an incredible table at this cozy, unpretentious restaurant recommended by the Michelin guide. Classic Swiss food of the region done right. Seasonal, of course, this is Switzerland. Autumn brings with it wild boar and venison but sticking to the classic, the Stunggis. Wow, just wow. Extremely well braised lamb, not stringy, not fatty, no connective tissue to worry about. The lamb is soft, very gamy, with excellent mineral notes. You can taste the grassy fields that these animals grazed on. The stew, very simple water, root vegetables (carrots, parsnips and silky low starch potatoes), and red wine and mounted with some excellent, rich butter. Warm and comforting. Not to be out shown, Switzerland's favorite sausage, the St. Gallen Bratwurst. No exaggeration, this sausage is a full 16". Naturally cased with a good snap. Extremely rich, oozing fatty juiciness with each bite, almost fluffy consistency, the mild taste of free ranged veal with a hint of the mysterious mountain herb seasoning. It pairs perfectly with a sweet caramelized onion sauce. Served with rosti, think hash browns crisped in rich Swiss butter that makes for a true stick to the ribs belly buster. Simple wine list with emphasis on Swiss producers. Luzern is well represented. As with all Swiss wines, alone, not very impressive but paired with the food of the region, beautiful. We visited Wirtshaus Taube for dinner during a 2-day trip to Lucerne and it was fantastic. The restaurant is centrally located in Lucerne city. We did not have a reservation but our party of 4 people was promptly seated on a weeknight. The restaurant setting is historic and quaint. We ordered the Wildbratwurst mit Wildjus (venison sausage), Herschschnetzu anere Wacholderbeerisauce (venison schnitzel) and Stunggis Eintopf met Lamm vo de Göschener Alp ond Gmües (lamb stew) as main courses, and all were absolutely delightful. The traditional accompaniments of spaetzel, chestnuts, cabbage, and brussels sprouts did not disappoint. The vegetables were slightly overcooked but this seems to be the swiss way. For dessert we had the Willisouerringli-Parfait met lauwarme Waldbeeri (parfait of pastries with a warm berry compote) and it was really unique and tasty! This is some pretty high-end Rösti. We got the Chögelipastetli --- veal dumplings in a pastry shell, with rice and veggies --- and the veal Bratwurst with a savory onion sauce and Rösti (fried potatoes, something like a giant hashbrown). The Rösti here is more fried than usual --- almost a cloth woven of very thin, crunchy french fries. The veal pastry was also delicious; tender dumplings (like little balls of bratwurst), chunks of veal, and a savory gravy. The rice wasn't especially memorable, but the veggies (including some fennel) was a nice addition. For drinks, we got a nice prosecco and a passable pinot grigio, both by the glass. Wirtshaus Taube is more of a nice restaurant specializing in countryside food than an actual countryside pub; there's something self-referential about the food. However, that's not a bad thing --- this was delicious. They were booked up on a Saturday evening; we got a table by bartering to be out by the time the reservation arrived. Calling ahead is probably worthwhile. read more

Each time I come to Luzern I book a reservation at Taube. The food is great every time, and the various friends we have brought here have always had a positive experience. You definitely want to reserve in advance as this place gets packed. The atmosphere is incredible inside. The walls are a type of white stucco, that creates a cozy almost romantic atmosphere. Their is a good wine list to choose from, and the menu offers a great selection of Swiss German food choices. My favorite is the rosti. It's hard not to order that when I come here, as it is one of the best I have had in Switzerland. read more

During a 10 day tour of Europe and spending 2 days in each city it's hard to pick just one place to go to eat. This place happen to make it on our list and I am very pleased. I ordered the homemade meatloaf with a side of mashed potatoes and loved every second of it. It was made with pork and bison meat which made it savory and the dark gravy on top just enhanced the favors. My dad and sister ordered the traditional pork sausage with pan fried hashbrowns and loved it so much then didn't want to share. I've been in Switzerland for about a week, and have overall been unimpressed with the food. Die Taube changed all that! First, it has a fantastic atmosphere - stucco walls and dark wood paneling downstairs. Upstairs the wood paneling carries through, making for a much larger space. I had the veal meatball, which was amazing! It was essentially a small meat cake, wrapped in bacon and with an egg on top. The meat was so tender and well seasoned! It also came with a side of green beans and mustard mashed potatoes. Even though I was full, I couldn't help but continue to clean up those taters! Die Taube is my favorite restaurant in Switzerland. They offer true, traditional Swiss food and amazing service. There is beautiful outdoor seating, overlooking the Reuss River and the indoor seating has such an intimate beerhall-feel, you will have to try Eichhoff, Luzern's native beer. The service is so-so; but, worth the wait and trouble. Must have dishes include the Alper Magroni and the Geschnezeltes or anything on the seasonal menu. Look behind you, if you are facing the river, and you have a gorgeous view of Mt. Pilatus, Luzern's beautiful protector. Enjoy! English, Swiss-German, and German spoken. read more
