During the time of coronavirus, I decided to give Scaddabush at Sherway Gardens a try. They are currently advertising 25% off curbside pick up, placing your order by phone or online.
I decided to order the Shareable Bundles for 4 Option #3 online, which includes choice of one salad, two pastas, and two pizzas; it comes with one free Charity Bread and two free Chocolate Toffee Jar Cakes; all for $65.00 plus tax (bundle pricing already reflects the 25% discount).
When ordering, I found out that the deal comes with restrictions. Only the cheapest items are available as part of the bundle. Only Italian Garden Greens and Caesar Salad options are available. Only San Marzano Spaghetti, Fettuccine Bolognese and Spaghetti Carbonara options are available. Only Margherita Pizza and Americano Pizza options are available. At the end of placing your order, you select your preferred pickup time.
Pickup at the restaurant was uneventful. The food was ready when I arrived. The takeout food was sitting inside insulated bags, which had heated plates in them. Service was friendly with a smile.
We started the meal with the free Charity Bread. The olive oil and Grana Padano came separately in the takeout container, which was a nice touch. Having had the bread when dining at the restaurant, the take out serving size was comparatively small.
I ordered the Italian Garden Greens (carrots, radish, grape tomatoes, fennel, chives, honey lemon dressing). The salad was mostly lettuce, not much of the other ingredients, but at least the lettuce was fresh.
For pastas, I ordered the San Marzano Spaghetti (San Marzano DOP tomato sauce, house dried tomatoes, basil oil, fresh basil) and Spaghetti Carbonara (wine cream, smoked bacon, chives, garlic, black pepper, soft egg, poor man's Parmesan). Packaging was good; inside the pasta container, there were two small containers with sauce, to be heated and added to the pasta before serving. There was no fresh basil in the San Marzano; other than that, taste was fine. The Carbonara was very oily, and definitely not as good as the one served in the dining room. Each pasta serving was enough for two people.
For pizzas, I ordered a Margherita Pizza (fresh basil, San Marzano tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, Pecorino, house dried tomatoes, basil oil, extra virgin olive oil) and an Americano Pizza (Ezzo pepperoni, tomato sauce, Pecorino, wild italian oregano, Scaddabush spice). The Margherita had no fresh basil on it, so it was actually a sundried tomato pizza, not Margherita. I'm not sure why, but the bottom of the pizza stuck really badly to the box, making it a poor experience. The Americano pizza tasted fine and did not stick to the box. The pizzas were small in my opinion; I expected them to be a bit bigger; each pizza was only enough for one person.
The free Chocolate Toffee Jar Cake (chocolate ganache, toffee caramel, vanilla whipped cream, candied walnuts, sea salt) was underwhelming. It consisted of two small chocolate cake pucks with a little bit of chocolate ganache and candied walnuts. The candied walnuts were nice, but the chocolate sauce was too little, and the toffee caramel, whipped cream and sea salt were nowhere to be found.
I had good experiences dining at other Scaddabush locations in the past. Unfortunately the experience does not translate well for takeout.
TLDR; takeout experience not as good compared to dining room experience read more
