If I could give 4 1/2 stars I would. I had the beef filet and it was perfect. Just as good if not better than other high priced steak houses in the area. Server was nice and knowledgeable however service itself was slow. It took much longer for a three course meal than our liking. I had the snow bend salad the dressing was fantastic. For dessert I chose the vanilla bean creme brûlée which I would get again, but other members of the party got the benets, I will get those next smelled amazing nobody left a piece!!!! Excellent service! Food was fantastic! My reason for 3 instead of 4 stars is price for content. While it was very good, smaller european type portions and for our market the price is on the high end. I will go back but not on a regular basis. While Hot and Hot or Highlands are two of my favorite, Satterfields could be just as good with a couple of adjustments. Also, being a little out of the way allows you to make reservations day of in some cases (not around Christmas I am sure). I wish I could give a 3.5 in this case! read more

Wife and I went here for our anniversary last weekend. They even put a nice touch of personalization on the menu with Happy Anniversary at the top. Our waiter and the entire staff were top notch and super courteous. Started off with the coddled egg as an appetizer. Amazing. I could have made a meal just eating several of these alone. Both of us ordered the braised veal short rib as an entree. Cooked to perfection. For dessert we had the blood orange dark chocolate parfait. We did get a laugh when they brought it out, they had written Happy Birthday on the plate. Regardless...we were celebrating and didn't think anything of. Had dinner here recently on a Saturday and had reservations. We were immediately seated in the bar area. We waited for a little while for a waiter to stop by for drink orders and after close to ten minutes one of the bartenders came out to our table. I can only assume there were staffing issues. The bartender took our drink order as well as our appetizer order. We got our drinks soon after, but waited quite a while for the oysters. The oysters were very tasty! Once the oysters arrived the bartender took our dinner order. Both of us got fish, one gulf and the other was the mahi mahi. It took quite a while for the dishes to arrive. Both were very well cooked and quite tasty. The portion sizes for both pieces of fish, however, were a on the small side. This evening the two bartenders seemed to have the whole bar section of the restaurant. Our reservations were not specific to the bar, which was quite noisy. We made reservations in advance for Valentine's Day. We got a 9pm in the dinning room because we did not want to be near the chefs bar. Well when we arrived we were settled at the chefs bar because the dinning room was full even though we had reservations specially in the dinning room. The food was good but not for the price. It was very small portions and just wasn't it's best. Maybe because of the late night?! Not sure. We both had one glass of wine with our dinner and by the time we left our bill was over 300 bucks and we left starving. Not worth it. Waitress was very nice and informed. Simply put., Satterfields is outstanding. The place does not pretend to be anything that its not. It is very good food, prepared with a lot of care and detail, but it is not pretentious in any way. The menu, updated daily, is not big but it does offer selections to every taste, two or three fish/seafood options, a game option (duck or rabbit on recent visits) and meats. Also usually feature a pasta dish. Chef Haller runs a tight and friendly kitchen. They work well together and if you sit at the chefs counter you get a great show of the controlled chaos that is a busy working kitchen. The grillmaster, Patrick, always cooks grilled items to perfection and seems to have a sixth sense for getting it perfect. The sign of a good griller is when they get visually upset when someone orders something welldone. On a recent visit, someone ordered a $38 filet butterflied and well done. Why would anyone want to eat a hockey puck. Wine list is varied and offers somehting to every taste and budget. No bad juices on there at all! Waiters are attentive but non-intrusive. We love Lucky the waitress. Very friendly and always provides great recommendations and honest assesments on the wines, without trying to upsell. In short, a terrific restaurant, they care in the kitchen, and you always get a consistently good meal. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for, and here, you get a solid dining experience. Local food, novel menu and excellent quality. Since I have a garlic allergy, it is difficult for me to get a tasty meal at a restaurant. I had one of my best meals ever (pork chop....yum!!). Wish they were in my hometown. I would go back often. Everyone in our party was happy with their food...from the crispy deviled eggs to the salads and seafood entrees to the desserts. We did Dinner for 4 on a Monday night and sat at the chef counter. The two cocktails I had were excellent. Started with the classic blood and sand and then went to a house recipe that I can't remember the name of but it was a nice stirred gin cocktail. We started with the cheese plate which I enjoyed very much. My girlfriend got duck and I got the Venison Osso Buco. The skin on the duck could have been more crispy but the flavor was very good. The Osso Buco was surprising on the dry side but still was a good dish. Fix the two issues with the entrees and this is a five start establishment. read more

I have really enjoyed this local neighborhood spot. My wife and I have eaten at the bar here several times. The menu changes frequently and all of the items I have had have been good. The service is attentive without being over the top. The bar tenders are knowledgable and selection is great. I am not a dessert guy, but my wife frequently has a dessert. My husband and I went last night for restaurant week. We were early and seated promptly. The restaurant has an elegant atmosphere, so I expected "foo foo" food and that's what we got. We ordered off of the restaurant week menu, which gives you two choices for $30 per person. We both got the salmon. We got a little green salad, salmon with one fingerling potato and a few green beans. Then we got a small peach dessert. I haven't been everywhere in Birmingham but this place gives me hope. This is food and service as I would expect from a top notch restaurant deserving of 4 stars. The menu is solid, cocktails are interesting--the bartender even ages his own bourbon which is a GREAT touch! We sat in a corner booth which was a little awkward for 4 but we managed. I had the duck and it was done perfectly with a sauce that was sweet but didn't take over the whole plate as it often does. The beau and I went to celebrate his recent house sale (woot!). We were both exhausted from a week of hustle-bustle and needed some downtime on a date night. Satterfield's delivered in all the best ways. We arrived early for our reservation and were seated immediately in a cozy corner table. The ambiance was upscale but not pretentious. Immediately, the bartender, Chris, brought over two glasses of champagne to help us celebrate. This was so thoughtful. We immediately melted into the comfy seats and took big sighs of relief to have 'survived' our crazy week. This little touch meant the world to us and allowed us to fully enjoy the rest of our phenomenal meal with full presence. Our waitress, Lucky, was so positive and helpful. She guided us through cocktail selections... I wish I could remember the names of what we got: on had rye bourbon and yellow chartreuse, the other was bourbon based too... both ended up being divine. She also suggested the Coddled Egg which was such a savory treat of an appetizer. The portion was huge so be sure to keep this in mind when ordering. Chris had suggested the rabbit pasta, which we got, along with a salad and brussels sprouts on the side. Everything was so well-flavored but not too fussy, and super high quality. The plating was beautiful. Throughout, Lucky made sure the table was always prepared for our next dish and was an attentive but non-intrusive presence. I ended up ordering dessert, though I was plenty full, because the description of the chocolate mouse sounded too good to pass by. I wasn't disappointed: this pastry was executed with perfection. We left in a semi food coma and in total bliss. We were so thankful for this meal/visit because it allowed us to punctuate a really exciting occasion with such a nice experience. This would be a fantastic place to cozy up to someone special to celebrate a special occasion or to just enjoy one another's company. Absolutely unbelievable. Satterfield's is the best food in Birmingham, without question. My wife and I go to a fine dining restaurant every couple of weeks or so, and have been to almost all of the nicer restaurants in Bham. For some reason, we neglected Satterfield's, despite the fact that a good friend of mine used to work there and told me repeatedly how good it was. For some reason we always went somewhere else. Never again. If the best of all the others is a 10, Satterfield's is a 15. It is that good. We split the Coddled Egg appetizer, my wife had the grouper, and I had the filet mignon. The Coddled Egg was amazing, as good as anything I've had anywhere else, maybe better. However, the main course is where Satterfield's blew us away. The grouper was the best fish either of us have ever had (I'm from New Orleans, she's from Mobile, so we know good seafood). The fish was so fresh you would believe a tsunami had carried it to the door of Satterfield's. The seasoning was beyond words, and it was cooked to perfection. The risotto that came with the grouper was rich yet delicate. Somehow they allowed the veggies to shine through the richness of the risotto. It was perfection. The filet, on my plate, was the best steak I've ever had. As with the grouper, the cut, the seasoning, and the preparation were a trifecta of perfection. The veggies were perfect. I can't say enough. Go to Satterfield's. Then go back! It is truly Bham's best, and would rival the best of any major city. That grouper plate! The chef deserves a place in heaven for it. read more

Great food every time! A friend and I had reservations for dinner but our table wasn't quite ready when we arrived. We sat at the bar while we were waiting for our table, and opted to just stay there. It turned out to be the best decision. The bartenders are so knowledgeable. They asked what flavors we liked in drinks, and whipped up something for us on a whim. It was great! Food is delicious! If the filet with chimichurri is on the menu, get it. A very good quality Birmingham restaurant using quality ingredients and providing excellent service. I'd encourage anyone who is planning on a visit to get a reservation. The quality and service yield a good sized crowd every night. Satterfield's is divided into a couple of good sized rooms with an accomplished jazz band or acoustic guitar (ordinarily) playing in one room Wednesday and Friday nights. It also has a very nice patio and "chef's counter". The waiters all seem quite knowledgeable - which is one of my favorite things in a restaurant. I love when the wait staff actually are knowledgeable and engaged with both the menu and the bar selections - and Satterfield's staff seems very well prepped on the menu and the drink specials. I'd recommend the sweet tea brined pork porterhouse as an entree. Absolutely delicious. The beignets with sautéed apples is a very good choice for dessert. Drink specials are creative and I'd recommend trying whatever the bartender has concocted for the evening. They are usually a good bet. read more

Sometimes a single word comes to mind when I think of a restaurant, and that word for Satterfield's would be adventurous. The meals are delightful in their originality. One small downside to being adventurous is that people who want average middle of the road flavors will not necessarily be pleased. However, a foodie will be quite happy here. Presentation is lovely and the service is really top notch. The chef makes her own sourdough bread on site and it is wonderful, especially appreciated in a town where great crusty fresh bread is rare. She even sold us a loaf to take home. I asked for my scallops on the under done side and they were perfect - crispy on the outside but just how I like them on the inside. We sampled an after dinner cocktail that offered wonderfully complex and subtle flavors, a house made limoncello drink with lavender overtones. This is also available in "grapefruit"-cello if you are a grapefruit fan. The ambiance is great for business dinners; despite the open kitchen the noise level is manageable, possibly attributable to the liberal use of wood in the interior decoration. A possible downside is that meals are a bit on the pricey side, but in my opinion well worth the dining experience you get here. All in all one of the top restaurants in the Bham area! read more
