Went here with my partner while we were visiting the area and we enjoyed the meal experience. Had a really great server as well who was helpful with menu item choices. As someone from the southern US, I knew that despite the descriptions, the meals weren't gonna hit like that for me, but that was OK because I went in with tempered expectations. I got the jambalaya which was good, but definitely not as flavorful as I typically get back home. Some of the real standouts where the shrimp which were tasty, and the crabcakes were also delicious! Looking for seafood? This may become your 'go-to' restaurant in the region. I've never been disappointed with the food here. On this particular occasion I felt like a late evening bite to eat and ordered the 'mushrooms neptune' along with 'voodoo chicken balls'. Tried these for the first time (I usually go with the excellent crab cakes but, well, I was feeling adventurous this time). Both appetizers were excellent and good portions too! The staff were quick, efficient and friendly as is typical of my usual experience here. It's a quiet spot with a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere. I'll be back!! read more

The authentic jambalaya is amazing! Just the right amount of spice, tons of protein and a very flavourful sauce. The coastal crab cake is likewise delicious, sitting in a bed of lobster bisque, so flavourful mouthwatering. Will definitely return! read more

Went for dinner last night. Ordered the tuna poke. The tuna tasted like it has been seared earlier in the day and sliced. It came to my plate tasting dry. No sesame seeds. The accompanying rice was left over ( I know what leftover rice tastes like). It had clumps in it plus it was cold. Does Balsamic glaze really belong with tuna poke? No! Slices of avocado and edamame would have been a preferred accompaniment along with pickled ginger. All in all an expensive disappointment. The one good thing about the meal was our server. read more

I'll preface this review by saying our waitress Barb was an exceptional, attentive server. Chef Jarrett too, stellar, he came out and spoke to us during our meal to see how things were. I have zero complaints for the food or the service. However, this was by far the worst dining out experience ever. A much anticipated celebratory birthday dinner Dec 6 ended in shock, and for days later is still having an effect. Flew in from Alberta to spend time with my 94-yr old Mum who doesn't recognize me due to dementia. My dear life-long friends made reservations for my 63rd birthday at this restaurant they had been wanting to try for some time. On arrival we sat at the comfy bar and enjoyed a delicious Caesar. I went to the washroom before we were to move to our dinner table. Upon entering the restroom there is a sink to your right and two stalls ahead of you. There is an approx 8"step up to the stalls. On the face of the step is a sign that says WATCH STEP. Upon exiting the stall, I stepped down and stumbled forward, rolling my ankle. When I left the washroom I went straight to my friend who has a visual disability and told her to be mindful when leaving the stall there's a huge step. I then went to the barmaid, owners daughter I since found out, and told her what happened. She seemed indifferent and I wasn't given much of a reaction. After using the washroom a second time, because he's an architectural engineer, I took my friend's 39-year-old son into the ladies washroom to show him the step. He fully agreed it was a hazard and was also a little dumbfounded that there wasn't additional signage on the inside of the stall. After dinner the owner, Scott who was familiar with my friend's husband, came to the table to see how our meal was. I quietly said to him I wanted to let you know.....and reiterated what had happened to me. I said I'm not seriously hurt, but I did roll my ankle. I motioned to my friend and said she did the same thing despite me telling her earlier of the step down. He immediately got angry and defensive with his response being he didn't own the building, it's an old building and it was built in the late 1800s. I said that's neither here nor there, this is your establishment and I'm just bringing it to your attention, and I also let your barmaid know earlier. He got louder and said now you're being rude. I was stunned and said being rude??? (I'm guessing because I said that's neither here nor there???) I'm merely bringing this to your attention as there is potential for a serious injury. He was so angry and made comment that I was free to sue him/take him to court. In disbelief I said What??? that's not my intention at all, I'm just bringing it to your attention as owner that both females in this dinner party launched out of the stall when we exited. He said that's on you, you're a "fu**ing idiot". He called me a "fu**ing idiot" twice during our brief conversation. At this point my friend's son interjected and said it doesn't matter who owns the building, this is your business, and there should be at minimal yellow tape defining the transition. I have never been spoken to like that by any person in any business establishment ....ever. It was all an unbelievable flurry. He pointed to my friend's husband and said "you're OK buddy, but the rest of these people are fu**ing a**holes". ......huh??? Truly inconceivable that this altercation was happening. My friend's husband paid the bill and we left, all in utter disbelief. Shocked, shocked, shocked at owner Scott Brownlee's behavior. Even if he internally thought she's a "fu**ing idiot" .....as owner, a thank you for bringing that to my attention would be expected. Instead I was shamed and verbally assaulted. My friend was also chastised with Scott yelling at her "Even after I brought you a free dessert"......the whole thing was surreal. A similar WATCH STEP or STEP DOWN on the INSIDE of the stall door would advert injury/potential injury. The sign on the step entering the stall is not as necessary as one on the inside. You have to step up to enter the closed door of the stall so you're more than aware. After doing your business your automatic thoughts are to head to the sink to wash your hands, not to step down 8". The floor and step meld together. At minimal cost, black and yellow hazard tape to define the transition from the step to floor, would be a definite attention getter as your eyes would gravitate down. Scott unequivocally ruined what was to be a great weekend as it took up most of my time & thoughts to process the unwarranted degradation. read more

I gave this place a 2 because we loved our server. It would have been a 1. Tuna was bland. The first salmon was so salty. The corn had grill marks but was ice cold. The fennel cakes were really chewy. My friend ate them, but he will eat anything in front of him. read more

Was there tonight (Monday) they had James Anthony amazing blues player. $2 off beers on Mondays. Ordered the jambalaya and it was very good. On Dec 6 my friend from Alberta arrived. It was her 63 birthday that day and we decided to celebrate at the Coastal Kitchen. It started off great. My husband, my friend and I decided to have a drink at the bar while waiting for the rest of the party to arrive. We were impressed with the comfy bar chairs and enjoyed our Caesar. My friend visited the washroom and came back limping. She immediately told the owners daughter who was bar tending what had happened, explaining that she had fallen out the stall door and turned over her ankle as there is about an 8 inch step to get in and out of the stall. It does say watch your step going in but the danger was coming out, there was no warning on the inside of stall and the flooring was exactly the same giving the illusion that the floor is all the same level. My friend suggested that there should be a sign inside of the stall door advising of the transition as it was very dangerous. We moved over to our table and ordered our food. On the sly I asked our waitress if I could order my friend a desert as it was her birthday. She replied yes birthday people get a free desert. I went to the washroom and I was leaving the stall when I found myself sailing through the air while thinking...omg my friend warned me yet here I am doing the same thing! I was visibly shaken when I returned to the table. My friend took my husband into the washroom so he could see the dangerous transition. This is when Scott Brownlee the owner confronted them being very hostile. He said that the building was built in the 1800s, that he did not own it and that it was not his problem. My friend suggested to him that the warning needed to be on way out of stall not the way in. Scott then called my friend a F**king Idiot not once, but twice. My 39 year old son who is architectural engineer came to her defense saying it doesn't matter who owns the building it is his business and when there is a transition in the flooring yellow tape should be on the lip...that it is code. Scott then pointed to us all at the table and said you are all F**cking A**-holes! My friend tried to explain that she wasn't looking for a discount or anything just giving him the heads up to a dangerous situation. Scott replied, "Here I was being nice to you giving you a free desert." I replied the waitress told me you give a free desert to all customers celebrating their birthday. Scott was now in a frenzy and yelled across the bar, Go ahead and sue me I don't give a f*ck...My friend replied, "Don't you understand I'm letting you know this so that doesn't happen in the future." My friend still had a full Sangria and her birthday desert on table but we paid our bill and left... Waitress Barb was wonderful...Chef Jarrett Smith was fantastic....Owner Scott Brownlee was a total failure as a human being and business owner. All he had to respond to the situation was, Thank you for bringing it to my attention" and it would have been done and over. read more

We were a group of friends and all enjoyed the meals. The Jambalaya was very tasty, and the seafood pasta special had a very generous portion of seafood, and it was just the right amount of sauce, not drowning in it. Other entrees enjoyed were the Taco Con Pollo and the Margarita Chicken. Portions are generous and very tasty. All they need is some Creole Zydeco music in the background to add a touch of authenticity. Great food and good service. Looking forward to another meal here! read more

Sassafrass is fantastic! It's become my favourite eatery around here. The service has been exceptional on each visit. The menu has something for everyone but if you like Louisiana style fare then you are in for a real treat. Highly recommended! read more

This restaurant is Newly renovated With new owners and a lovely new look The service is amazing Our waiter was courteous and knowledgeable The food was creative Excellent shrimp I had the bayou bullets ( stuffed jalapeños)... these should have been cooked more but the taste was good Wife had the burger.... it was ok Had the pulled pork tacos with salad... this was pretty good These guys are well on their way and with a few tweaks to the menu and presentation, they will be a real hot spot read more
