    How it started.
    Lorena L.

I was at a department store when I saw this simple, cute dress that wasn't even lined and it cost $150. I thought "I can make this myself" and that's what I decided to do. Mind you, I can barely sew a hem much less make a dress, but I was determined. I took pictures of the dress, the tags, went home looked it up online, saw the type of fabric used and found a pattern that closely resembled it. What else did I need other than skill set to make it? I then went to SAS Fabrics. They have such a huge selection of fabric. I spent hours in there just perusing through all of their inventory. The ladies could tell I had no idea what I was doing but they couldn't have been any nicer, extremely helpful and gave good advice. They showed me where to find the Jersey matte fabric, the polyester material for the lining, zippers and the special elastic I needed for the sleeves. All in all, I walked out of there spending a grand total of $60 for everything. I borrowed a sewing machine from a friend, watched a couple of YouTube videos and locked myself in my spare bedroom for weekends at a time making these dresses. Thankfully, I bought extra material in case I made mistakes (and I did - plenty of them). I finally had to call in a friend who knows what she's doing and she supervised me until the dresses were complete. With the extra material, I was able to make shirts for my pup. While the dresses aren't perfect (they're a little wonky here and there), I will be wearing them come spring and summer. I was proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone and attempting something new. One of my New Year's Resolutions for 2025 was not to be complacent in any aspect of my life, to learn - challenge myself, grow and I did just that. Needless to say, I won't be giving up my day job to become a dress designer but I'm satisfied with my efforts and the final product. I would absolutely go back to SAS and highly recommend them for any fabric needs - they have it all. The ladies there know what they're talking about, are extremely helpful and provide excellent customer service. Five stars all the way.

A shot into the interior of the store ... it goes a long way back loaded with fabric.

Arrived late afternoon on a Saturday. Items clearly marked with prices ... very reasonable too. I didn't know what I was looking for, but, after talking with the helpful staff, they knew what I needed and made their recommendation - which I took. There is a lot of space here filled with just about anything you'd need I think. So glad I stopped in!

First time in the store after not finding what we needed at Joann's Fabric. This store is amazing. First, I love supporting small mom and pop stores and this definitely felt like one. They have so much fabric too, a variety that rivals Joann's. There's bolts of fabric sold by the yard, fabric sold per pound, upholstery fabric, bargain bins with fabric for $1.99/yd. The prices were very inexpensive. We found most of what we needed on just this one trip. I highly recommend this place. Will definitely come back again!

I'm in love with this and creative juices flowing

Wow so I was looking for ribbon that you couldn't find everywhere. I found this place just passing by. I looked up and said perfect place for my project! I found fabric and more than I actually came for! I'm going to make a skirt and headwrap with a couple of the pieces. They have so much stuff it's overwhelming so make sure you have time The staff is so friendly and helpful, gold star on the customer service

Our upcoming visit to the islands is just around the corner, our creative & talented seamstress has her own prints but we'd like our own designs to choose from. We've purchased here before (can't believe I haven't done the review!) and Jacqueline actually loved their prints--so did we. The Aloha Shirts were simply fabulous! So here we are again to find more distinctive Hawaiian designs. Today, only "Baba" ("father" in Farsi) was in attendance at the shop, the last time we were here (if I'm not mistaken) was probably before the pandemic. Back then, there were a few ladies working here and were all Pacific Islanders. Baba was friendly & personable. The selection is fairly massive, wall to wall, 2 aisles worth and some on the back wall that were plain (I did not check that back wall!). Pricing? Definitely sky rocketed, just like everything else. It's about $10/yard (the material that's thicker). Hubby needs 3 yards per shirt (XXL Tall). It's a pretty penny, plus the price for custom tailor, that's another discussion lol. Given the price tag, perhaps we will explore other fabric stores (next time) that will accommodate our needs. Plus, when we purchased from the ladies that were here before, they gave us a discount for the amount we paid for the fabrics. Little perks go a long way. In any case, this was a good (learning) experience.

The place seems smaller than the Wall St location but theu manage to fit 100s of fabric rolls from the ceiling to the floor (literally). The shop is located behind a dollar/bargain store. The area is a bit rundown on the outside and there was a fight happening in the parking lot by the alley (yes at 10 o'clock in the morning lol) which was kinda scary esp in an unfamiliar area. The place has a lot of beautiful fabric types & designs so many to choose from!! They also sell bracelets, hair clips, flags and other accessories not only of Samoan representation, they also have Māori, Chammoro, Tongan, Hawaiian, iTaukei, Mao'hi, and other polynesian islands (sorry if I didn't mention your island). Check em out if you're looking for island fabric. I highly recommend!!!

My mother and I've been loyal Michaels customers for years as full-time artists and hobbyists,…read moreunfortunately the customer experience at this store, specifically at the Vista Store in Torrance, has declined significantly. I hope my feedback warns other customers and helps management understand what's happening at the store level. A few days ago, I went in to quickly pick up an online order after receiving both email and text confirmation that it was ready. My name wasn't on any of the pickup bags, so I asked for assistance. A manager briefly looked around, said he would check by the registers, and then proceeded to count cash in the register instead of helping me. After I approached him again, he passed me off to another employee who also couldn't find the order. I eventually noticed a bag with my name on the floor behind the register. They scanned it, and I left. When I opened the package later that night, I realized not only was the bag dirty--with a footprint on it--but the product inside was the wrong brand. I had ordered a specific brand on sale, and they substituted an Artist Loft item without informing me. The receipt label didn't match the product at all. I returned to the store the next morning, where the female manager told me they had substituted their own brand because the original item wasn't in stock. That explanation made no sense--if a customer orders Prismacolor, you don't replace it with Artist Loft. When I questioned it, she impatiently said, "Well, I'm returning it for you," with no apology, empathy, or effort to acknowledge the mistake. Not only did I waste over 30 minutes during the initial pickup, but I also had to make a second trip to return their error. A simple, sincere "I'm sorry" would have gone a long way. While I was there, I asked about another pending order. They told me if the item was on the shelf, I can get it. Even though the item showed available at this store, we couldn't find any. I ended up canceling it. More waste of time! Later that afternoon (4:11 p.m., Dec. 3), I called the store because the website was now showing the item in stock. The person who answered the phone cut me off with, "No, I'm too busy," without any courtesy or suggestion to call back. The level of rudeness at this store has become consistent and noticeable, even my young child has commented on it. This pattern of dismissiveness, errors, and lack of customer care is extremely disappointing. I hope regional or district management takes these issues seriously and restores the professionalism and positive atmosphere Michaels was once known for. (I've never shopped at Hobby Lobby until recently, and the vibe there is completely the opposite. It's warm, friendly, and the price of same brand products WAY cheaper than Michaels!!!) A few additional concerns for fellow customers: Many art supplies are significantly cheaper at Hobby Lobby, Amazon, or Dick Blick online. I genuinely prefer supporting local stores, but not at the expense of higher prices and poor treatment. When returning online orders paid through PayPal, you can request a cash refund. Store employees stubbornly claim they can only issue store credit, but when I called to ask, customer service confirmed that is NOT true. I now have over $100 in store credits! And I'll tell you next why I wouldn't opt for Michaels store credits. At the Redondo Beach location, an employee scanned two store credit receipts--each worth over $80--and told me they had no balance. He even asked if I wanted to throw them away. I later confirmed this was his error, but when I brought it up during a future visit, the same staff member simply shrugged while leaning on the register with his leg up. He no longer works there, but the value of those credits was never recovered, and I never received so much as an apology. Another ongoing concern is price inconsistencies. As someone who shops at Michaels often, I know the prices and watch for coupons like most loyal customers. However, the prices on the shelves frequently do not match the prices at the self-serve kiosks. I've asked for assistance on this four or five separate occasions, and it's surprising that the issue remains unresolved. Even worse, staff often appear visibly irritated when the discrepancy is pointed out. Right before a recent 40% promotion, prices on many items were increased in the kiosks but not updated on the shelf displays. I picked up a few items, excited to finally use the long-awaited 40% discount. At the register, everything rang up at the higher price. When I asked about it, I was told that "the overnight crew forgot to change the tags," even though every version of the item was still marked at the regular price on the shelves. In the end, it would have been cheaper to buy the items at their regular price with the standard 25% coupon than during this so-called 40% sale. I wondered why I still shop there. I guess because we are creatures of habits!
