TLDR: Great everything, go see Arturo. If you're anything like me the thought of getting a custom frame is intimidating. I recently purchased a print from one of my favorite artists and felt it deserved something better than a flimsy frame from target, it was also a unique size and there was no way I was going to take a pair of scissors to it to cut it down. So I found Allan Jeffries framing on yelp and decided to pay them a visit fully expecting to walk out of there and shame because custom framing was too expensive and having pushy salesman make me feel that if I wasn't buying the very best I didn't appreciate the art. Instead what I found was a super helpful and down to earth Guy by the name of Arturo. He seemed to have a genuine appreciation for artwork and I deep understanding of how frames can complement not only the piece but also the surrounding decor without overpowering either. Still hesitant, I interrupted Arturo to let him know that I did not have a big budget to work with, he did not flinch or scoff, he told me they had a variety of beautiful frames at various prices and he would not sell me something that I wouldn't be 100% happy with without breaking my budget. Even though I wasn't a big money customer he treated me as if I was. He went above and beyond to get me a frame that the artwork deserved and that I loved for a price I could afford. he did a Great job of clearing the aura and mystique of custom framing and in doing so gained a customer for life. I have been to many frame stores from the West Side to the South Bay. If you want to frame a piece you care about or need professional suggestions on how to frame... just go here. 100%. As part of the original team of employees at Art.com in the late 90's in Chicago, you'd think I would know something about framing art. But, I don't. On this visit, I needed my newly acquired Thomas Hussung pop art piece framed that was very different from anything else in my house. Totally clueless. Found this place nearby on Yelp and recalled another one of their locations from when I lived in Santa Monica. Swung by on a random Saturday afternoon. The expert there was named Arturo and if you have a chance to get his advice, you will be in excellent hands. After a series of questions, we quickly arrived at the perfect framing style for my piece. On the day he said it would be ready, about two weeks later, it was. And I took advantage of their Yelp offer which helped too. Little more about Arturo... he is truly passionate about his job and your art. Got some education both on frames, but also on how to hang art, including heavy art. I explained how I had this massive mirror on a single nail in my home. He gave my two heavy-duty mounting hooks to hang my heavy mirror properly and the stress of that falling on my son during an earthquake is gone. So grateful for that. Coming back soon with a print that my wife's cousin (@fishingforgyotaku) made for our son... we'll see how Allan Jeffries does with an ink print of a fish. Sadly, Allan Jeffries Framing (AJF) did not live up to the hype, at least not for us. Although Aturo seemed very nice and competent on our first visit, the level of professionalism completely vanished after. We came to AJF to have a large work of art (on canvas) removed from its frame so we could send it to the artist's representative for replacement (it had been damaged by light). We spoke to Aturo on the phone ahead of time, and he told us to 'come over' right away - my husband loaded the piece in the back of a truck (it's very large), and drove the 20+ minutes to AJF. Aturo waited on him - removed the canvas, rolled it up for us, even tried to find a box for us. He said to bring back the frame with the replacement piece when we receive it so he could remount/back for us. Several days later, after the artist's representative received the rolled canvas, we were asked to have a professional framer precisely measure the frame openings so the new piece, which would be printed on metal and enhanced by the artist, would fit perfectly. We called Aturo ahead of time, brought the frame to him, and, while on the phone with the artist's rep, he made the measurements they needed. After the call, I received a call from the artist's representative - she wanted to warn me that Aturo had been very "rude and condescending" to her. I apologized, assuming that it was a misunderstanding, since Aturo had always been professional in his dealings with us. A month (or so) later, we received the new artwork - it was absolutely gorgeous! We called Aturo to make an appointment to have him remount and back it. He set an appointment date for soon thereafter. My husband loaded the work and frame in a truck, and drove back to AJF. When he arrived, despite having an 'appointment,' Aturo said he was 'busy with another customer' and didn't have the time to work on our project, but said that he felt we should have him install a UV protected covering in the frame. He made a NEW appointment for my husband to return a week or so later. Upon returning home, we discovered that the new appointment date conflicted with other plans we had, so we attempted to call Aturo to reschedule. We attempted to call him SEVERAL times over SEVERAL days - leaving messages (during his business hours), without any response whatsoever. When we finally were able to reach Aturo on the phone, no apology for not returning calls (okay - some people ignore their emails and calls - not very professional, but it is what it is!). I told him that we'd need a new date due to a conflict. He said that he was 'very busy' because Christmas was coming, and that he then was going to be closed between Christmas and New Years. Although he looked at his calendar, he kept saying he was very busy for the next few weeks. I told him I had absolutely no problem waiting until after the first of the year - he was VERY grateful, and chose a date (January 5) and a time (1pm). Yesterday, January 5th, my husband, again, loaded up the frame and artwork in a truck and drove to AJF for the appointment. When he walked into the shop with the project, Aturo said 'I can't work on your project now, I'm with a customer.' My husband asked when he should come back, and he said 'maybe next week.' My husband reminded him of the appointment, Aturo didn't seem to care - he was 'busy.' SO, having learned our lesson, we decided to NOT go back. I called the artist's representative to ask for a referral to another framing store. When I mentioned that Aturo was going to put UV protective plexiglass in front of the image - the artist's rep said, emphatically, "NO!" Adding 'you NEVER should put glass or a UV plexiglass in front of artwork printed with this process on metal,' that the printing process already puts a layer of UV protection, and that putting glass or UV plexiglass in front of artwork produced in this manner would significantly diminish the beauty of the image. She said that Aturo clearly had no idea what he was doing with regard to this new medium, and she was relieved that we did not end up using him for the project. I looked up other framers in the area with 4.5-5 star reviews and found another gallery (not far away from AJF) who not only told us to bring the piece in right away, but quoted a price, wrote it up, and gave us an estimated date to pick up the completed project - no need to sit in the car for several hours while they work on it because they 'don't have room' - this shop was organized and professional (and in the neighborhood for, I believe they said, 20+ years). I'm very sad and disappointed that AJF did not live up to their reviews. I have several other pieces of art (including some originals) that needed to be stretched, mounted in new frames, and backed, and hoped that we would be able to build a relationship with AJF to do, not only on our current re-frame, but other new framing. I went in to get 2 prints framed for my boss. Arturo was very knowledgable & helpful in the process of framing. Unfortunately, I damaged one of the frames in transit & went back to see what they could do. Arturo assessed the damage & gave me my options. I fully expected to have to pay for the repair of the damaged area. Arturo let me know they could probably discount the repair, but would let me know. I got a call the next day from Arturo who informed me that Allan would actually repair the damage free of charge! While hanging pictures in my 18 month old's room, I accidentally dropped two of the frames and broke the glass. It was a big mess and now that he's walking, I was concerned about him finding a missing piece of glass. I took the frames into Allan Jefferies and the gentleman I spoke with suggested that I use plexi instead of regular glass. I wouldn't have even thought to do this. He then gave me a great price and told me it'd be about 6 days. He called me 3 days later and told me the pictures were ready. I was led to Allan Jeffries from a recent Groupon and it is now my go-to frame store. As you walk into the store there are hundreds of types of frames to choose from. It can be a bit intimidating at first, but with the wonderful help of Sean you will no doubt be able to find something that will fit your piece and compliment your decor. Sean is extremely knowledgeable and offers great suggestions for frame types, mats glass, etc. He helps to walk you through the process and doesn't miss any detail. The prices can go up exponentially, so make sure to tell Sean what your price range is and he'll try to get you the best frame for your budget. I originally came to get 3 surfing prints framed and I was so pleased with the way it turned out, that my husband and I came back for 2 more custom jobs. Thanks Sean, you're amazing!
