I had been here once before today and the experience was ... fine. The staff were a little rude and pushy but at least I got the fabric I wanted. HOWEVER today I was considering going back because I needed some cheap satin, and the employee was being extremely rude to a woman trying to buy fabric from him, going so far as to intrude on her personal space to try and intimidate her. I had been wanting for so long to get to LA to get to the fabric stores! I've discovered that I can really sew( not runway status yet)but, love to do it in my spare time. Anyway, I went to this store and begin browsing around and settled on the section with cottons. There were several people in the store ahead of me being serviced on the opposite side of me and I was in no hurry. I had never been to this store, so I asked the guy, "if there was a line?" He proceeded to tell me sharply and rudely, that there was no line AND, I needed to wait my turn!!!... Being a Christian and quite patient,beyond my own belief, at times, I told him that I had no problem waiting and that I was in no rush, I just didn't know how he operated things and I wanted to be sure that "I"was doing things correctly. So, when he finally got to me, he never spoke, just asked, what did I want, or something on those lines. So, I started asking him questions about the materials that I was interested in, he was just RUDE and short with his responses...everything I asked! I finally reached Jesus status and wanted to "turn over tables"-- instead, I told him that I was his customer and didn't need or like the way I was being treated and talked to! He was just so argumentative! He said it was the way he talked and he couldn't help the way he talked, everybody talks different...as if I was stupid and didn't know the difference between a language barrier and kindness!!!! I told him that I didn't come to argue with him, it wasn't my intention. I deserved better treatment. I still purchased several yards of material there and was satisfied with the material, BUT his customer service skills were non-existent! Thank God my husband and daughter weren't with me, they wouldn't have allowed his rudeness! I gave it 3 stars ONLY because I liked the material! I went with my kids looking for some fabric. The man working at the time was extremely rude. As we were trying to figure out what fabric we wanted, he kept yelling at us to move out of the way-we had been in the store less than a minute. Then he finally said, "If you don't know what you want, then you need to move out of the way." How were we supposed to decide if we couldn't even look at the fabric? Were we supposed to stand on the sidewalk to decide? Mind you, NO ONE was in the store at the time. If you can put up with extremely rude customer service, then you can buy stuff here. They have nice fabric and decent prices, but I realize there are cheaper chiffon around the corner at $1/yard while they sell it for $1.75/yd. I think the guy is the owner. He is very grumpy and seems to hate his job, his life and his customers. He is very short tempered and impatient. I will not come back here anymore due to his attitude towards me. I do not recommend anyone coming here because he is not appreciative of any of his customers unless you can speak in quick short sentences and keep your distance. read more

They have good prices on some of the fabric but they are extremely rude. Despite the name, not everything is 99 cents. Some fabric is much more expensive. I was waiting outside for my mom when I heard the employee yelling and swearing at her. The employee's math was not good. (Please see photo. The total should be 41, not 42.) The worst part is that she gave them really good business, buying 41 yards of fabric! She spent over $50 there. He was a little bit nicer and remorseful after I came up to him and pointed out that his math was wrong and asked for a business card because he knew this bad review was coming. That still doesn't make up for the fact that he mistreated a customer. They definitely need to learn to treat their customers better. Street parking is extremely difficult to find in this area. There are also parking garages that you have to pay for. read more

I usually go here for all my heavy duty satin needs. They have a variety of color and shades. This is a tiny hole in the wall corner store on a major street in the fashion district. I've been shopping here since 2007 and have always been satisfied with my purchases. While some fabrics are priced higher than 99 cents, it's still a bargain than buying from JoAnn's. I've made many an evening gown, sailor scout, pretty cure, etc from these high quality satins. The high qualtiy satins usually run at 1.99 a yard with a 3 yard minimum purchase, but it's still a hell of a deal. I've long moved from LA to the the east coast. This is my go-to place still for high qualtiy satins at a bargain. Check it out if you're in the area! Tip: Remember to always, always wash your fabric after purchase. While this is a no-brainer, fabric bought from the LA fashion district is outside and God knows where that fabric has been. Always, always wash! read more

I went to this store today. They had some OK fabric and I wanted to buy some. I asked the employee to explain to me the difference between a roll and a yard since some signs priced the fabric by the roll. He did not look at me rather spoke to me while facing forward. He smirked at my question, asking "what do you mean?" I asked him the question again and he continued to smirk while feigning his confusion with my question. His smirk, avoidance of eye contact, and lofty attitude bothered me so much. I told him "forget it. You're not been helpful at all." I walked out. Very disappointed in the employee. I have been going to the fabric for almost years. I have found that each store in the district has its own personality and fabric specialty. I have found LA 99 Cent to be a perfect store to find a variety of fabrics. In general, the fabric district is NOT for the novice sewer. When visiting the Fabric District, you must have a CLUE about sewing, notions, and fabric types you want to purchase. The district merchants' customer service is not about helping you to figure out your project design, fabric type, or notions. If this type of customer service is needed, Joann Fabrics, Michael's or Hobby Lobby is better suited provide this type of service. read more

This is my most favorite fabric store. I Heart them with a big fat heart. I've been shopping here for years and years. They guy who runs the place is really sweet. Very honest. It's a small store, and their selection is ever-changing. So, it's best not to shop here with a definite fabric in mind (though I've gotten lucky a few times) and just keep yourself open to the magic of a 'good fabric find'. They always have great, very high quality fabrics available- at the amazing price of only 99 Cents a yard. They have a 3 yard minimum per fabric. Occasionally, they have a small selection of higher priced fabrics- like $1.49 per yard. I've never paid more than $3 per yard- and that was for silk. Silk! Beautiful silk Charmeuse at $3 per yard!!! Incredibly rude staff. I was looking at a poplin blend fabric and asked a staff member if it would hold pleats. He told me it would not. I then go to look at a cotton blend fabric since I know it will hold pleats, but I asked the worker if it would, just to be safe. Again, he told me it would not. Odd, this kind of fabric should work but I will take his word for it since he should know more about fabric than me. I then asked him what fabric he would suggest. He suggested chiffon. I politely told him that I would prefer something that is not sheer, and asked if they had anything else in stock that may work. His response? A shrug and an "oh well" before walking off to talk to someone else. Their fabric may be cheap, but I chose to walk away and support a business that appreciates their customers. read more

I was shopping in the area for a large amount a fabric. Ran across this place and I will 100% agree with the other negative reviews on this place. The guy was rude so rude that I walked out when I was ready to spend over $100 at his shop. We simply asked him question very politely and then asked it one more time 5 minutes later to confirm before he pulled the fabric I needed. (Mind you this was a simple question of do you have 30+ yards of this?) And he decided to just go on rant as if we insulted him. Really bro? You got issues... One of them being lack of decent customer service. I get it this LA this isn't Joannes Fabric retail store. But I don't have it in me to hand my money over to someone who is straight up rude. Do yourself a favor skip this place there are a half a dozen other vendors with similar prices that are happy to assist and be helpful as you spend money in their store. read more

Walked in here with my elderly mother and saw some beautiful fabrics. Asked a man some questions and he seemed like he did not want us there. He did not help us so we kept looking around. My mother went back to look at it some more and the man with the earring was very rude to her. He said to stop touching the fabric and either buy it or leave. He claimed we were making a mess. I do not know how this store can even stay open with such rude people. How can someone be so rude to an elderly person and a paying customer. Really cool little fabric store. It has become my new quick stop for all my fabric needs. The guy who's running it is really cool and always super helpful. He sometimes has a little pile of discounted fabrics. It is small but there is always variety and new stuff fabrics every time I go. OMG Love this place. Not that I love to share my secrets on where I get the best deals, but this is the one place that I absolutely will never pass by if im anywhere in the area. They have great quality satins at 99cents a yard or prints at 1.99. Its the quality stuff that other sell for over 2.99-3.99 or more. i buy by the roll from them because they deal in closeouts so you will probably not find the deal again. The guy who owns it is really really nice, and the employees are very helpful. they cut fast, accurate and load the goods into my car. Its always pretty busy so you have to be patient but its well worth it even if you have to wait. a few weeks ago i bought pink and blue faux leather at 99cents a yard! where can you find a deal like that in the fabric district? And they have new stuff all the time so its never a wasted trip. read more

I drove over 600 miles to purchase material for making wedding dresses. The prices were excellent, along with customer service. After walking about over 100 shops, which starting prices were averaging $5 on up, I found the best prices for the material I was purchasing here. Despite the previous poster disputing $1, I would gladly pay $10 extra. The prices here for the same material start from $35 a yard, the price I paid was $1.75. Yes it would have been nice to purchase it at 99 cents, better yet free would have been nice, but c'mon the owners have to feed their families also. I give this place 5 stars and will be making the trip again to visit this shop. read more
