I've heard great things about Sarkozy Bakery for years, but never had a chance to stop in since they close at 5 pm or earlier. We happened to be in town during lunch time so Nate and I stopped in for a quick bite. Their lunch menu includes some sandwiches, a couple salads, pizza, soup, and quiche. I got the ham and cheese sandwich, and Nate got an 8" pizza. The food came out pretty quickly, and I liked the sandwich. It had plenty of mayo and thickly sliced ham and cheese. It came with a little cup of pickled veggies, which I enjoyed. I had a bite of the pizza, which was very tasty! The prices were great - I think my sandwich was $7.50. We also got some pastries for dessert - I chose the cherry danish, and Nate got the pistachio croissant. Both were very tasty and not too sweet. The vibe of this bakery is more old-school and homey than some of the more "trendy" bakeries that I'm used to - not a bad thing, just a little different. They sell loaves of bread, cookies, and pastries. I loved their merch, too - cute pins, hats, tote bags, etc. They have brunch every Sunday and they were swapping out some art while we were there. I just love this bakery, as do my kids! The ham and cheese croissant is my go-to of late, and my youngest loves to get the chocolate croissant. I have enjoyed many of their offerings and happily enjoy them again. The staff are so friendly, patient and helpful. Of course the owner, Judy, is just an all around amazing person. I'm not sure if I ever got to visit the old location, but I love the touches in the current space: the bread door handle, the unique paintings, the open floor plan. Here's the thing. Sarkozy's U.S. a well-beloved local bakery and a Kzoo treasure. I just wish their product was more stellar, or at least less variable in quality. Their brewer's bread for example is wonderful, unusual and delicious with a good crumb. The sourdough is middle of the road: often very holey (a too-quick rise?) with an undeveloped flavor profile. I like the one at Whole Foods, say, or Zingerman's much better. Cookies: love the ginger, the lemon could use more snap and zest, and the choco chip tastes fine but is consistently too hard. Any chewiness would be an improvement. Their pastries are uniformly ghastly, at least all those I've tried. Honestly guys, buy yourself a true pastry chef or just eliminate it from your roster. See? I'm SO demanding. But hell, Zingerman's is only 1.5 hrs away and has shipping, and you can find a Whole Foods in GR. I'll still be back for the Brewer's bread though. read more

I used to walk here a few times a week When I worked downtown on Michigan Avenue, they have some very tasty lunch options daily rotating soups and they make some really good personal pizza with the best homemade crusts! SO GOOD. Stopped in on a whim between appointments and had the best lunch I've had in a long time. I got half a chicken salad sandwich and half a Greek salad. That with a cookie and a cup of unlimited coffee was $10. Great price for the portions. The chicken salad flavorful and served on delicious fluffy bread. The Greek salad was simple and fantastic. I remember the morning when we learned Sarkozy's burnt down. We had seen a concert the night before in Ann Arbor, and that morning as we drove home we decided to stop at the bakery on Burdick Street. We were driving on King's Highway heading toward town when we saw that we were getting closer to what looked like a fog bank. Except it wasn't fog, it was smoke. We thought it might be Mr. President's or the Rickman House, but then we realized it was the Sarkozy bakery. Sarkozy's is one of those iconic businesses in Kalamazoo. I suppose bakeries are like that. I think of the long time Country Maid Bakery on Portage Road that way. I would guess that one of the fears of customers, once it reopened, was that Sarkozy's would be unable to replicate its old recipes. There was a story circulating, which I am not sure was true or not, that the original recipes were lost in the fire or were perhaps never even written down. I think people were reassured when the bakery restarted several years later that the Sarkozy product had returned. But I find the new location downtown less than accessible; parking can be a challenge. So I usually get stuff at one of their outlet locations, like the Parkview D&W. Our faves are the various coffee cakes (cherry, raspberry, cinnamon), the Oatmeal Bread, the Challah Bread, and the round French Bread. I like the cookies and the bakery favors a flat, very crisp style of cookie. Judy Sarkozy often provides the cookies for Gilmore Festival events, and so I find having one or two satiates me at intermissions and that keeps me from buying and eating six. My girl believes everything that emerges out of the bakery is always overbaked, so she thinks everything is always this side of too dry. The coffee cakes are very much like that. The last thing we bought from Sarkozy was something new to us: a challah round with golden raisins. I hope it's seasonal because I could eat that year round, toasted slathered with butter, and that would probably greatly annoy my physician. read more

I tried an almond croissant, chocolate cherry hand pie, and chocolate chip cookie. The hand pie was really good. The chocolate chip cookie is very crispy and was also good. The almond croissant was slightly too sweet, so maybe try less paste or a less sweet recipe. Everything was fresh. I like the modern décor too. I stopped in again to try cherry, chocolate, and rum custard packzis. So good. Small and not too sweet. Way better than the overly sweet calorie bombs at Sweetwater. I came in another day and tried the oat cookie, raspberry pinwheel, and cream cheese pastry. All fresh and very good. I like that their stuff isn't too sweet. read more

I came into Sarkozy one weekend because I had looked at their menu online and because they are incredibly popular and renown in Kalamazoo. I ordered chocolate au pan, an almond croissant, and hot chocolate. The other person with me ordered a pizza and a hot chocolate as well. The pastries were fantastic. The almond croissant was definitely fresh and one of the best that I have ever had and by the time I finished it I was ready for another. The chocolate au pan was fine, but not life changing. The other person with me enjoyed their pizza and when it was brought over to them it was still hot and they were offered a pizza box in case they couldn't finish it all, so the service continued to be very accommodating. My only complaint with the food is the hot chocolate. I am a fan of very rich, chocolatey, and creamy hot chocolate and I really only could taste the milk in this hot chocolate. I felt as if it was 3/4 foam. Lastly, I have to say that if you want to take full advantage of the menu that you should arrive early on a weekend and not closer to close. They did not have everything on the menu by the time that I arrived, which is completely understandable. But if you want to take full advantage of all the amazing things they have to offer than I would recommend arriving earlier, rather than later. You MUST go here! Judy Sarkozy is back with her wonderful breads , savory & sweet baked good AND lunch! I have been a fan of Sarkozy since my son was just a pup (20 years ago). I still visit to get the breads but there is lunch. Although it's a limited menu it's all good. From house made personal size pizza's to sandwiches and soup. Today I had home made bean soup which was lovely! The flavor was out of this world good with fresh herbs, white beans, carrots, onions AND you get scrumptious rye crackers to enjoy (make sure to bring home a bag to enjoy with cheese). It is not easy to see the store sign when you are driving by on busy Michigan Ave. Sunday Monday closed, weekdays 7:30am~ "5" pm, Sat 7:30~4pm. Great for lunch (Pizza at bakery) We love the home made not overly sweet flavorful Pastries, Danishes & Cookies also fresh baked French bread and Kalamazoo Sour Dough. Some friends say they are not sweet enough, and go Mackenzies bakery, but we love Sarkozy's subtle sweetness, really highlights all the good ingredients and love of a baker. Here's the thing. Their bread is amazing. Their ham and cheese croissants are life changing. BUT. A lot of their sweets have nuts, and they arent advertised. I got 2 chocolate chip cookies, because they looked absolutely delicious. I took a bite. I tasted nuts. I hate nuts. I asked about them, and the person said yes, of course, they have walnuts. I told her I hate nuts, never would have purchased 2 cookies if I'd known they had nuts. She just nodded, unconcerned. I also told her that could be a huge problem for someone with a nut allergy. Again, unconcerned nodding. My son has an egg allergy, so I'd already asked about a few of their doughs, but if you don't even label for nuts, can I really trust that you're that concerned about other allergens? I was shocked, but maybe their regular patrons know what has nuts and no one else cares. Just seemed like a big concern. read more

I really adore this bakery right down the road! I know for a fact there are even people across the state who rave about this place. While roaming downtown, it's always a special treat to walk over here to satisfy your sweet tooth. I've never placed a large order here, but stopping in for a cookie, or two, or three is really inexpensive and decadent! A beloved little bakery. I have a history with the old location and Madame Jude. I loved the old location prior to it burning down. It was so old-world and rustic that it made you feel like you stepped into a time warp with warm memories. Madame Jude even let me take some black and white photos for a college project of the bakery without question, but were since lost in the fire. Since the reconstruction, it lost that charm and replaced it with modern/industrial style. It's incredibly clean and well maintained, but it lost some of the charm. As for their pastries, they are a little expensive, but still very good. Those haven't changed since they relocated. I love their tarts, danish, and walnut honey crusted pastry - I was never wowed by their bread, but am a fan of their designer artisan bread they use to keep in their windows at their old location. As a place to eat - it unfortunately does not have a wide selection. They have pizzas, sandwiches and quiches. A regular affair of generic foods that don't really play to their strengths as a bakery. It would be nice to see a little more variety of things such as perhaps filled snack breads or something that utilizes their freshly baked breads or pie crusts. read more

Everything I've ever had here is amazing! And the staff is always knowledgeable and friendly. My favorite thing to do for a treat for myself or to bring as a small gift/ treat for someone else is to just stop by and see what looks tasty in the case that day. They gave a variety of baked goods, sweet and savory. They generally have croissants and cookies of different types. I've been impressed by everything! The croissants and other flaky pastries are very rich and buttery yet light, and always fresh. I also was fortunate enough to have paczki from Sarkozy this year- now these are actually authentic! If you thought a paczak was just a jelly doughnut... be sure to get to Sarkozy for Fat Tuesday! They're definitely made traditionally... but do be warned, the rum is detectable in the flavor! This is a must-stop. The individual treats are extremely reasonably priced, too. I definitely plan on coming back often! read more

This place was suggested to us by the brewary tour guide at Bell's eccentric cafe. Bell's provides raw ingredients from their brewing process to Sarkozy to make their delicious bread. Needless to say, the brewers bread is amazing and limited in stock. So be sure to get one before they sell out. The wise thing we did is to call in advance and ask them to keep a loaf aside for us and they did so very kindly. So it was a great suggestion by Bell's eccentric cafe! read more

I expected a better experience from one of the most celebrated bakeries in Kalamazoo. This morning was my first chance to visit since they opened their new location, which is a nice space. I wanted to like them since they seem to be so rooted in the community and have a positive connection with many other great businesses. My four-year old liked her croissant (which was quite small), but the $5 spinach feta sandwich (croissant) I ate was not good at all. It didn't taste fresh and somewhere in the warm-up process the edges became burnt. The croissant was thick and soft, it didn't have any fluffy or crisp to the dough. It was so salty that I couldn't eat more than a third of it - and we Greeks know our spinach & feta pastries. When I let the staff know that it wasn't good, there was no comment, no apology, no offer to replace it with something else, and no offer to refund my money. This was the true bummer and their response could have turned the situation around. The selection and stock level of pastries was not great, and I was afraid to buy the coffee sitting in an airpot since who knows when. I was disappointed overall in my meal and my experience and won't plan to go back. Too bad. I will walk over to Water Street Coffee, Food Dance, or Black Owl next time - all nearby with much better baked goods. read more

Wonderful bakery with friendly staff & outstanding food. Some may think the prices are a little high, but for the quality & flavor they bring, it's worth it. I stopped in while running errands downtown to pick up some of their amazing onion rolls & decided to try their broccoli & cheese quiche. Light, fluffy, amazing egg pie goodness with plenty of the veggies & cheese inside. The crust was light and flaky, just like grandmas. I skipped my usual savory croissant at first, but couldn't leave with out one, so it will be a nice lunch addition later. Their croissants are the best! read more

It's a little tucked away, if you don't pay close attention you'll miss a treat. Delicious snickerdoodles, chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, cranberry walnut cookies. I expected more based on reviews. I was looking for old school, old fashioned and that is not what I got. I picked up a few pastries for my aunt, and ended up sharing them with her later that day. They were a bit dry. I was eyeing the hand pies but stock was low, so I passed. There really didn't seem to be a lot to choose from, and this was a Sunday morning, so I was surprised. There was more display case than pastry, and a little band playing in the space, so I could see myself sipping coffee there and sitting for a bit.
