A complete nightmare! BEWARE!! The owner Amy is full of herself and has absolutely no professional etiquette whatsoever. Starting with her inability to answer straight forward questions and ending with her backing out of contract and cancelling our order 50 days before my wedding after I already paid the down payment! She cancelled the contract and refunded the down payment I made to hold the date - leaving us to find another cake vendor on short notice! Her excuse? She has worked "for Bert's for 42 years and made over 10,000 cakes and feels like no matter what she does, she won't make me happy." Photo attached. All I did was ask about the pricing for the samples because no other cake vendor had required payment for samples so I didn't know how much they cost. I also asked her which location we should visit to try the samples. Lastly, I told her that I couldn't believe that she was charging us the same amount to deliver the cake across the street as she would charge us if she were driving across town. I didn't say I wouldn't pay for delivery... I just told her I was surprised that she would do that. The other cake vendor we were considering wasn't charging us a delivery fee at all and they are located 30 miles away from our church! I was put off by how unprofessional she was from the beginning when I first reached out last fall. The only reason I decided to finally give Amy a chance is because she was cheaper and right across the street from our church. Now I understand, you get what you pay for...... because Amy is a MESS. Absolutely awful and I feel sorry for anyone who has had to deal with her. I saw in other reviews that she is described as rude, cheap, disorganized, snobby, and that she talks down to customers. I can confirm that she is ALL of these things and worse. The cake isn't even that good and at this point I'd rather buy one from Sam's Club than have to work with Amy and her staff. She doesn't send you a contract until you pay her a down payment, which is strange. Typically you create a contract/agreement, have both parties sign it, and then you ask for the deposit. The contract looked incredibly sketchy - Words were misspelled, font was all over the place, punctuation and grammar were hideous. Photo attached. Just so you know, AMY - Nobody cares HOW MANY YEARS you've been making cakes, HOW MANY CAKES you've made in your lifetime or HOW GREAT YOU THINK THEY TASTE if you continue to be a an inconsiderate, egotistical, uneducated, defensive, stubborn old woman who can't figure out how to treat people and keep your word. Stopped by yesterday because I had never tried this bakery before. I ordered several items from the case. I assumed because I came early in the morning that everything would be fresh. They weren't. The eclairs had a strange aftertaste and the custard center was off- it was almost gritty. Everything I tried was hard and old tasting with a very weird aftertaste. Nothing was fresh. I visit enough bakeries to know the difference between fresh and stale. The lady wasn't particularly kind and almost seemed annoyed that I was in there. Too many good bakeries around to mess with this place. We ended up throwing out a chocolate cream filmed horn pastry, an entire eclair and a cannoli. I looked at other reviews to see if I was alone in this but another customer also felt the same with items from the case having a weird plastic aftertaste. The owner replied to that person and said to let items sit out. That did not take care of the staleness and weird aftertaste. They need to put fresh items in the case daily. I ordered a half sheet cake to celebrate my son's 50th birthday party. I asked them to duplicate on the cake his newborn photo and current photo. Both turned out perfectly. It was decorated exactly as I had asked and ready for pickup as promised. I worked with Amy, the owner, who was very accommodating, especially since I was ordering from out of state. Everyone at the party enjoyed it and commented on how delicious the cake was--light, moist, and not overly sweet. It was quite a hit. Today would have been my Great-Grandma Tuts 101 birthday. She passed away in 2010, but I love to celebrate her life every year on her birthday. My husband had to go pick up some stuff for his work a few hours north and he came back with some beautiful cupcakes and a hot cocoa bomb. The idea of getting cupcakes for her birthday was from a gift I actually made her as a kid, one of those plastic things kids paint and you hang it up usually in a window. I made her a cupcake with purple frosting, which I now have and hold dear to my heart. Unfortunately, Bert's Bakery didn't have purple frosting on hand (if we had called for a custom order and given them time they may have but this was a last minute decision) so we got 2 chocolate and 2 vanilla cupcakes. Bert's Bakery definitely fit the bill for some delicious cupcakes. I've been here in the past and no doubt I'll come back again, the sooner the better. They are so much better than the grocery store / big box store options in the area - there are a variety of fillings to pick from and the decorating is always gorgeous. Very disappointed with the staff the cake decorator was extremely rude to me. She is narcissistic. She was saying that the image that I sent to her was a different color. I had four people agreed that the color was purple and she was saying it's blue on the image on my cake I ordered I paid $50 I overpaid for an 8 inch cake. I've been meaning to write a review for awhile, but it was not until I tasted the cake at my niece's wedding that really lit the fire to write this review. First off, this was a free cake she won at some event that showcased businesses for weddings. I believe the prize was a $500 cake. That being disclosed let's get down to the cake. The cake looked fairly good, but could have been done better in my option. My biggest complaint is the taste and here is the flat out truth: IT TASTED LIKE IT CAME OUT OF A BOX!!!! Don't understand what I mean? The cake tasted no better than what you can buy at the dollar store and make yourself with a box of Betty Crocker, Duncan Hines, Pillsbury, or even a store brand version. I seriously don't think there is any difference between those and what Bert's made. Next was one of the flavors of the tiers was a vanilla cake with raspberry. This tier had 5 layers of vanilla cake with vanilla frosting between each layer and on top and there was only one small coating of raspberry gel on the top of the third layer. From top to bottom of the tier I would say the cake was 6-8 inches high and the raspberry flavoring was about 1mm, if that. You didn't taste much, if any raspberry. The other flavor of cake was almond poppy, and while that tasted about right, the almond was too lightly flavored and totally over shadowed by the overall, It Came From A Box Taste. I have had much better cakes, heck, I just bought a slice of cake from Sawall Heath Foods on Sunday for ~$12, it was 6x4x4, Gluten Free and from come Canadian Bakery in British Columbia, and while not the best I have had, it was leagues better than Bert's. Additionally, I have been in their store and have bought cookies, cupcakes, and slices of cake. The cupcakes and cake slices are just that same as I have described above and the cookies are, well... Go to subway and you will get a better cookie. Personally, I would just go to Insomnia Cookies, more expensive, but leagues better. Bert's needs to try to improve their game, they are just stagnating. read more

I've ordered from Bert's bakery before at their Kalamazoo location and they did an excellent job on my dads 50th surprise birthday cake. However, this time around I placed an order for my mom's 50th surprise birthday party and was all around disappointed in this cake... I emailed them the look of the cake and then went in to place the order. I did it this way because last time they told me I needed to email them first. I got a lecture as to why you're suppose to email after you've placed your order. Moved on from it because it's not that big of deal to me. I had requested to have a cake similar to the one I have shown. They said they can do everything but the chocolate covered strawberries on the top of the cake. Not a problem, so I bought macaroons to be added instead. I also specified I wanted as close to rose gold for the drips on the side of the cake. Lastly, I asked to have a two stacked cake to make it taller and they said that's something they could do. All around, had confidence they could make the cake I asked for, especially with a picture of what I wanted. I paid for the cake ($90) and didn't mind paying that much to have the cake I wanted for my moms birthday. Come day of the party, I pick up the cake and it's to say I was deeply disappointed in it was being generous. Now, I wasn't expecting it to be perfect, but for the price I paid, I was expecting at least something similar. The macaroons looked almost wet, the drips were just icing they did on the side, and the cake was cone shaped rather than sitting straight up. Just to top it off, the icing on the side of the cake was so thick that it fell off before I could even get it to the party. The reason I gave it a 2 star was because the cake did taste good, just very disappointed on the look of the cake for the price I paid. Will be calling to see if I can get a partial refund. Edit: Called the bakery and they were able to get me a $30 credit so I raised my rating a bit for them being accommodating. I appreciate them apologizing for this since their typical custom cake baker was gone this week and tried their best to accommodate my request. read more

Today is my wife's birthday and, for the tenth year in a row, we are celebrating with a birthday cake from Bert's Bakery. This year's cake seems even better than I remember: the cake body is light, moist, and tender, and is delicious in it's own right, but the butter cream icing is simply to die for -- so light and smooth and the perfect degree of sweetness! While eating it, the room was silent except for everyone going "mmmm-mmm"! This was simply the best birthday cake we have ever eaten. I've always thought of Bert's Bakery as the nearest local competitor to the Boonzaaijer Bakery. I suppose this belief dates back to a time when my mother favored the butter cream frosting of the Boonzaaijer Bakery, while my father liked the people who worked at Bert's Bakery. I, personally, like the cakes and pastries from the Boonzaaijer Bakery. As I have said before, Boonzaaijer cakes will be featured at my funeral. But today was not about me, and the person of honor had been hinting about trying a cake from Bert's Bakery. She chose a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting with a raspberry jelly between the two layers. Likes: 1. The cake was a denser cake than what Boonzaaijer's makes. When it comes to chocolate cake, the denser, the better. 2. Much prettier flowers made with frosting adorned the cake. Dislikes: 1. The two layers were not of equal size. The top layer of cake was twice the height of the lower layer. 2. I still like the frosting Boonzaaijer's uses more than Bert's Bakery's. 3. The bakery misspelled the person of honor's name though I handwritten it out in big block letters for them beforehand. (And yes, I did check before I walked out with the cake, but decided the fix - the bakery couldn't have just make a simple letter substitution, because then the spacing in the name would have been obviously wrong - would have been too much trouble. And, anyway, I knew the guest of honor would care least of all of us.) read more

I have never really used a bakery for any reason. But my bestfriend birthday was coming up and he liked egg custard pie and this location was the only one I could find it. When I called them their service was great and gave me tips on how to save money next time since it was last notice for them to mend it for me but still made it. But when I arrived to the location it was ready on time and customer service was excellent especially this lady who wore all black with a hair cap that was like bakery hat was very nice and fun to talk too. It is always a great experience to get food items from them. Definitely will come back and recommend anyone looking for bakery items that good and good Serivce :) read more

I'm assuming Amy is the owner for the reviews, she's rude and unwilling to work with you. I tried to order a croquembouche, given it was last minute but I was told that was fine. She could only give me a price for it (that's seemed kinda steep) but she didn't know the measurements for or how many cream puffs she'd have to use, because she hadn't made one in years. She immediately told me she could not make it for the amount of people. After trying to reason with her she with the size she denied my order and told me I should have given her more of a notice because it was an all day job My problem is, I was told that the short notice was okay and I was trying to reason with her to make a smaller one so it wouldn't be an all day job. Why don't more locals know abou this place? I had to call around asking where to get a cake for a recent family dinner. Someone at Sarkozy's recommended it since they don't make cakes. and after hearing the supermarket makes theirs and FREEZES it at a central location I couldn't be stopped. Berts Bakery is amazing! Amy is wonderful to work with! She cares about customers and wants them to have a great experience! Every order we have placed has been delicious and looked great! I have ordered Birthday cakes, Graduation deserts, pastries on and on! The last time I reached out to Amy we had cancelled my daughters graduation party due to Covid and then at the last minute we decided to pull something small together for, I contacted Amy to see if she could put together something for me but also told her I completely understood if she couldn't because I had just read on Kalamazoo Menu that she wasn't taking any custom orders for a few weeks. I just wanted to reach out to double check and see what she thought...she gave me the best ideas! I ended up buying some pastries from her Bakery and she suggested another bakery for a few unique other ones and cutting a few cake slices in pieces and I made some wonderful desert trays! I have given this bakery several chances and I'm afraid I'm all out of patience and won't be returning. I ordered a cake for my son's birthday and was told to email the owner a picture. I did and received no response. I called 5 days later and was told they were extremely busy and hopefully they received it. So, I'm just supposed to hope my cake will be ready, a cake that I paid in full upon ordering? I figured it was spring and the beginning of wedding season, so I hoped for the best. On pick up day, the cake was ready at the specified time and I wanted to make sure it was right. I went to lift the lid on the cake box and the owner snapped at me. "Don't you think it looks good? Why are you opening it back up after I JUST taped it?!" I spent $80 on the cake and I want to make sure it's what I want. The exchange left a bad taste in my mouth, figuratively and literally because the cake was dry and the frosting was too thick. I tried Berts for lunch one day and the sandwiches are surprisingly delicious. However, while eating in the establishment, the owner was having a problem with a wedding couple. She pulled a worker aside and sat down at a table right next to mine. She then proceeded to call this wedding couple, who were not present, every name in the book. Something about flowers and their cake and it wasn't her responsibility. I thought this was extremely unprofessional to rant about another customer in front of a current customer! Every time I have been in there, the workers have been busy and the owner just sits in her little cubicle. I heard her planning a cruise last time I was there. Must be nice to treat your customers like crap then sit back and sip margaritas. Stay away. You are better to make a cake at home than waste your money here. read more

Another 5 star experience at Bert's bakery! Today is my son's birthday and I was nervous that perhaps a lot of places would be closed because of the holiday, but Bert's was reliable, as always! I called on Monday to order my son's cake. The whole process took maybe four or five minutes which is great when you have a toddler who doesn't give you more than a few minutes of silence to talk on the phone. I picked up the cake this morning and it was beautifully done and tastes amazing! We've had a few different cake and frosting combos from here so far and they've all been good.
