I ordered the Osmanlieh with ashta a few weeks back and it was very disappointing. The ashta was not creamy at all but of hard consistency and gummy so I could not enjoy it at all. Wasted $30. The ashet-sarayah though, also made with ashta, was pretty good and creamy. So I'm not sure if they just messed up the Osmanlieh that was a special order. read more

I used to get cakes and pastries from other nearby bakeries.. boy was I missing out! Sarkis Pastry has the best tasting, most fresh cakes than any other local bakery in the area AND their prices are fair. They use high quality ingredients and you can really taste the difference. I wish they had an extensive website with different photos of cakes to make pre-ordering a bit easier, but they always have ready made cakes available at all times. My friend were working late and all weekend and was craving desserts. Glendale has a few handful of spots to get Middle Eastern pastries, but this one has an awesome variety. Their Nazook is soft with a flaky outer crust. Their fruit tarts yum and humongous. Today, I tried the Aish Al Saraya and it was cold, soft & creamy all in one. It reminds me of mochi consistency with pistachio crumb toppings. Oh so good! The lady behind the counter offered for us to taste it before deciding. One bite for me did the job. I was game! Their pastries are fresh and just so appetizing. The shop is clean, and have lots of variety. Last Friday, I went there to order 2 Kunefes Bejebenehs and 2 Sahlabs. Sahlabs were delicious; however, the Kunefes were disappointing. 1st, the percentage of cheese to the simite/wheat was probably 40%. I could not taste that I was having enough cheese inside. Additionally, it was almost cold. A few months ago, it was much better. The cheese inside Kunefes were almost falling out and it was hot enough and delicious. Craving some baklava and Yelped the nearest place near Glendale Galleria and this place came up and it's delicious! The baklava was crispy and flaky - the outer puff pastry shell and the inside was warm, doughy and chewy. Drizzled with generous amount of honey and crushed pistachios on top - nom, nom, nom!!!! The right amount of sweetness. I got the banana flavored baklava; the regular honey flavored baklava with birds nest design shell; the baklava with nuts and their Honey Doughnut Ball. Even their Honey Doughnut Ball was amazing!!! A lil hard on the outside since it's glazed with honey, but once you bite thru it, the explosion of honey rips thru your taste buds, delightful! The lady, who had helped me even gave me samples to try. At first, I thought she showed me, but nope, that's to try, nice!!! :) I bought 1 lb for $10 and that's a pretty good deal. Since I don't live in LA, I rely on other sources for eating tips when I visit. The LA Times wrote an article about Armenian "tahini cookies" and said that Sarkis was one of the few who sold the "snail shell" variety. Well, anyway, they made it sound tasty. I know, snails and tahini! Ben and Jerry's won't be featuring that anytime soon... The cookies are really delicious, along with probably everything else they make, but getting them requires some effort. The only employee didn't speak any English, and I guess the word "tahini" isn't Armenian... look for lime-sized cookies and get a lot and share them. They have this intensely doughy taste, especially at their center. Mmm! UPDATE, Feb. 08: Still delicious! You have to go and try their creamy thing. I don't know what it's called by it will change your DNA forever. I never even knew that sahlab existed and was introduced to the stuff here by my friend. It's cream that's looks like condensed milk that's hot and sweet (but not too sweet). They add some cinnamon on top which makes it perfect if you love cinnamon as much as i do. After we warmed up with a nice cup of sahlab, they brought out our lavash wraps that had fresh feta cheese, chopped olives, chopped tomatoes, and mint leaves. It was very different than the wraps you would get from delis and restaurants because this had fresh baked lavash bread! Wow, this was a great discovery. In addition to what we bought, they also sell the usual cookies, cakes, and pastries. There is one entire display case for the baklava. Stopped by to pick up some Baklava when visiting a friend in Glendale last week. On Sunday 10 a.m. in the morning it was relatively empty and I was quickly attended to. I decided to get the two pound tray of Baklava and enquired on their best selling ones so I could restrict myself to those, but got a curt response that all were very good, so I decided to get a little bit of everything which cost around $20 for the two pounds I tried to enquire about other sweets like halwet and Kunefa but the response were not very forthcoming, almost as if it was a pain for them to explain their different deserts. I must mention that the handful of other people making purchases were all speaking Armenian so it seems to be a locals preferred type of place. Anyway coming to the taste of the Baklava it was a let down and was not up to the mark. There were two things that stood out, firstly the quality of butter/ghee used in preparation is very low which leaves a starchy after taste in the mouth on eating the Baklava and secondly a lot of the pieces were not fresh as their texture felt like they had been sitting there for some time. I shared the tray with friends at work and their feedback too was that it did not taste fresh. Overall the quality of Baklava did not work for me and I'll look elsewhere for my repeat orders. read more

Go early, before 3pm, if you want their sahlab. Sahlab s a warm, slightly sweet yogurt based drink with mastic as thickener. Sahlab is floral...a little like orange water. Also worth going early for are their sandwiches. I saw a pic on yelp but I didn't see sandwiches on their menu. The girl at the counter says there are 2 kinds of vegetarian sandwiches: oregano or oregano, tomatoes, mint and olive. Get the second one. It is amazing. It's wrapped in a soft wheaten flatbread. OMG it's so wheaty and so good. The green oregano gets everywhere in your teeth so watch your smile after you eat! It's so worth it and so inexpensive. Baklava is very fresh. It's crisp and cooked thru. Sometimes I get baklava that is dough-y and that ruins the whole experience. It's not too sweet either. Some baklava is soft and wet with honey. This has just the right amount of honey and all the texture. I've tried the diamond, the finger, the rose water and the birds nest. My fave is the birds nest because you get optimum amount of crunch with that one. I ordered the halawa jbneh. It's a soft cheese rolled in some spongey wrap. I'm not sure what that wrap it but it's similar to the texture of injera. It's barely sweet, the cheese flavor really comes thru. I thought this was the pastry that is doused in rose water but it's not very rose water-y. Maybe I'm thinking of another dessert altogether. Service is super nice. I did not feel rushed or outcasted. There's plenty of free parking in their lot or the adjacent one by 7-11. They take cards too. 4 baklava, 1/2 lb of halawa jbneh, sahlab and sandwich totaled $13. Best Armenian Pastry establishment! I've tried them all and this is my favorite. True, most of the sweets aren't traditional Armenian desserts but even in Armenia dessert is not a real strong point so we've learned to do French and Middle Eastern pastries real well. I have very fond memories of when this place used to be located across the street in a smaller location in the 80's. Whenever we would stop in, my mother would let me get an eclair! Maybe it's because these were the first eclairs I had but my entire life I have measured every eclair with the Sarkis Pastry one and none (except the mini pistachio eclairs in Florence, Italy) have satisifed me! If you go in not knowing exactly what you want, I guarnatee you will be overwhelmed by all the choices. I recommend the Zakhdar Croissant for something salty and the kenefe and napoleons for something sweet. Then again you can't go wrong with anything here so go buck wild! Order anything! read more

Went here on a whim and will definitely be coming back! How did I not know about sahlab before today?! Theirs is warming and delicious, and their baklavas and other pastries and cookies I tried are fresh and tasty! Sesame cookies, pistachio baklava, walnuts in a sweet nest of thin pastry, and zalebi which look (and taste) so similar to the jalebi found in India. I'm always down to try new ethnic food so here i went :) He told me it's called a koon ef eh (i probably butchered it, but that's how it sounds). It's some bread pastry with cheese and something else and u put sugar/honey water in it. Simple, but delicious! The cheese wasn't to overpowering (really i couldn't tell it was cheese) and there was a hint of cinnamon in the breading. The sweetness from the sugar/honey water worked well with it. It's a breakfast thing! I saw myself eating these with coffee or tea. Yum! Do you baklava? I baklava. This place makes the most awesome baklava ever =) Seriously. I absolutely love their baklava. I have had it for a few years as part of company to company Christmas gifts and things like that. However for the first time, I got to go here in person... The grub was awesome. My daughter loved the cookies that she ordered and I loved the baklava that I got as well. They have a ton of different options here and instead of selling it as you would think, it is actually sold by the pound (for the baklava). The service was attentive, but a bit aloof as i believe that we were a completely a typical customer. Overall though, we were well taken care of here and got some great desserts for very cheap. I gotta say though, that the baklava here is better than a lot of the homemade baklava that i have had and definitely head and shoulders above all of the other mass made baklava that ive sampled.
