I was in the market for a Sari top... right when I walked into Sari Palace, I was greeted by friendly faces asking if I needed help. The saleswoman helped me find a beautiful top to match the bottom that I already had, she also wrapped the full Sari on me, so that I could see what a great match the top was. Then, several of the staff helped me with finding the perfect jewelry to go with my Sari. They were all so kind and helpful and the shop has a beautiful selection of Sari's! Also, I ended up leaving a piece of my own jewelry there... I called after I left the shop and they had put it aside for me! I was going to send 16 of my wedding guests to buy Indian clothes here, but the owner (a very nasty woman who smiles at you as she cheats you) tried to outsmart me of $50 by changing how much I paid for an outfit. Eventually because I was tired and didn't want to invest more time in finding the outfits I'd picked out for some of my bridal party, I lost a total of $200, but the transaction filled me with such distaste, I would NEVER go there again. Go to ROOPAM instead. Their quality is better. If you check the finish, fit, and fabric of Sari Palace, you'll understand and would never go there either. I purchased my wedding and reception outfit from here and I can say it came out very nice. besides the fact we had to drive about 1.5 hours each time it defiantly was worth what we got. A couple of things weren't exactly how I wanted however aunty ad uncle were willing to fix it and made sure I was happy with what I got. My husband was happy with his outfit as well. For big events I would recommend going to sari palace as they have the high quality stuff with the latest trend and styles. The staff at Sari Palace were so nice and helpful! I went in with my nine-month-old to get us each a suit for a Punjabi wedding we're attending. We were just looking for readymade outfits, and ones that were not too expensive. The lady that was helping me was really nice, and did not judge at all when I told her our budget. She showed me a ton of options for my daughter, and suggested a style I didn't have in mind when I came in, but ended up buying in the end. When it was time to find my suit, I really liked that there were separate racks at different prices. That way it's easy to see all the options in your budget. I ended up finding a really cute suit pretty easily. I think I will have to alter mine a bit as it's not very fitted, but overall I'm really happy with the suits I found. And I can't say enough good things about how nice everyone that works at Sari Palace was!! They also gave me a little free gift with my purchase! In comparison to another shop I went into, I think Sari Palace has really good prices. And there are sale racks if you're on a budget, which is nice. read more

The one thing I ask for from a store is that I get what I actually buy. Is that too much to ask? With Sari Palace, it apparently is. I recently purchased a Jodhpuri suit at Sari Palace for an upcoming wedding (not mine, thankfully). I don't know the names of the salespeople or anything, but the service was very inconsistent. The first person sent me straight upstairs to the discount section, where I quickly determined that there was nothing there that would work for me, despite the saleswoman's statements to the contrary. When I went back downstairs, I found one I liked, and tried it on, and the saleswoman tried to convince me that it fit fine despite the fact that it was hanging off of me. So I left. Then I came back, because I really liked it. When I came back, a different saleswoman helped me, and this one was actually very helpful. She told me that yes, it was far too big, and that they could order a smaller one from India. So we did that, I paid for it (expensive, even after the 55% discount), and waited four weeks (instead of the three weeks they'd originally quoted) for it to come back. When it did come back, the vest was the right color and design (which I'd been worried about) but the jacket was (is) a completely different color. It went from off-white to light brown. I naturally mentioned this to the owner when I went to pick it up and saw it for the first time. His response? "Yes, that happens sometimes." It does? Well, that would've been good to know before I dropped $325 on a differently colored suit. Is it because I'm male, people think I just won't notice? Well, as far as the people at the wedding are concerned, it'll look fine, because they never saw the original colors. But I'm very disappointed. My advice is that if you like something at Sari Palace, buy it only if it fits off the shelf and you can walk out with it. Don't let them order anything from India. Incidentally, the groom of this wedding had a much worse experience with Sari Palace trying to get his outfit from India. First, the embroidery came back completely wrong; second, the size came back all wrong, and they've been trying to fix it ever since. So my experience is certainly not isolated. read more

To someone who is challenging me saying she/he is whiter than white and have a tattoo - you went for an alteration, I am talking about ready to wear clothing. This store might have paid them to write this 5 star review. I knew the owner, his wife, daughter and entire family personally for years - someone with a bad attitude doesn't take the trouble to know the store owners personally, get along great with them and give them thousands of dollars of business over the course of years hence please do not judge like that. It's because of my history with the store that I was so shocked. Going to the Peninsula or towards South Bay to shop for Indian clothes is 1000 times better than shopping here. I used to buy at least 1-2 ethnic Indian clothing every month from this place for two years and they would sell me each item at a 50% discount. When I purchased something from here or just about anything, they would give a straight up 50% discount on each (I don't know how many people know of this but all my friends who shop here are still given that 50% discount). The owner of this store used to tell me - "We do this for all our customers. The prices marked on the item is just for the sake of it. Anyone who buys from our store gets a straight up 50% discount." I used to get that discount and used to shop very often at this place until one day I got married and went to this store with my caucasian husband to shop for some clothes for us. The owner did not even recognize me! Someone who has shopped every month for 2 years suddenly the owner has no recollection of who I am, wow! Selected two sherwanis for my husband and two salwar kameez for myself and guess what? They charge me the full price that's marked on the items and don't honor the 50% discount that they did for two years and when I asked the owner "What happened?" he says "We don't offer any 50% discount we never did or do". Now that's really funny because a dozen and more of my Indian friends in East Bay still shop here and still get that 50% discount. I was aghast and bewildered! I figured they clearly did that out of discrimination towards my husband as he is non-Indian and were intentionally charging us the full price. If you are non-Indian, want to shop here and do not care about their high prices then fine, but if you do care then please do not shop here! It's better to buy from a business where people are not discriminated against. I walked out of the store without buying anything and never coming back. Their entire way of doing business is a scam. This is one of the largest and most popular stores in the Bay Area, which sells traditional Indian clothing such as saris, salawar kameez, lehengas, men's punjabis, accessories, and much more for women, men, and children. Sari Palace has a wide variety, from the simple, but beautiful everyday wear, to the lovely, extravagant formal bridal wear. The lower level consists of more dressy outfits, whereas the sale items, casual wear, and children's clothing are located on the upper level. Sari Palace is opened Tuesdays-Sundays, and is closed on Mondays. I was very intimidated to set foot into the store, for fear of sticking out like a sore thumb and getting strange looks; however, the sales people were all smiles and were very welcoming, which made me feel really comfortable shopping there! The salespeople are very friendly and do not hesitate to help you find the perfect items you are searching for. My experiences have been pleasant, and I do recommend that you take a trip to Sari Palace and peruse through the great selection of beautiful clothing. A BIT OF ADVICE: The items seem to be a bit over-priced. Many of my family members have warned me in the past not to go on my own because I will surely be over-charged- a combination of my ethnicity, my unfamiliarity with typical costs of the various fabrics, and my lack of bargaining skills. I did not heed their warning once, and learned I got a pretty good deal on some of the items I purchased, so I went again recently. I picked out silk saris as gifts for my family, and the prices on the tags ranged from $250-$420. The owner of the store, nice, but hard-nosed, gave me a "discount"- prices ranged from $100-$150. I felt like it may still have been over-priced, so I tried to bargain, writing down the prices that I was willing to pay, on a post-it note, which the store owner had given her initial quotes on. As I suspected, my offers were declined. I finally asked if I could get all for $120... (I guess, a no no in bargaining) She agreed. At the time I thought I was getting a reasonable deal. However, one of my family members went to exchange the sari I had given her, only to have the store owner tell her that she would not have sold it for more than $70. I understand that that's the way this game is played, but it irks me to be in such a situation. I felt as if I might have been duped... It's a little unfortunate that it has to be this way. Don't be discouraged though! It is a great store. If you're happy with the discount you are given (usually up to 50% off the sticker price), then great! For those who enjoy the thrill of bargaining, that's great too! I highly advise, if you are not a confident bargainer, like myself, please take someone who really knows her/his stuff. It really helps to be firm and know what it is that you are buying. That is something that I need to learn! Also, keep in mind that the amount of work/detail, such as the sequin, stitching, coupled with the fabric (silk, chiffon/georgette, cotton, polyester, etc.), affect the pricing of the sari. The more work/detail and the better the fabric, the higher the price. However, know that the prices on the tags definitely seem marked up. Amazingly Sari Palace continues to amaze me. After all the fiasco noted in my original review, they called me a week later to tell me to pick up the blouse meant for my friend's wedding. I was confused, because not only did I pick up the blouse, but we had it altered because it did not fit comfortably and I needed to wear it for the wedding in 2 days. They later informed me that they gave me the wrong blouse and that I needed to pick up the right blouse. How do you give someone the wrong blouse?! Granted they were both the same shade of red, and the pattern of the fabric was similar, but when someone else is picking up the blouse for another person, you as a business need to make sure you give the same blouse. In anycase, we picked up the blouse, the blouse still does not fit correctly. Waste of money and time. Avoid this place for all sari alterations. If you have no other choice, then give them 6 months, and make sure you bitch them out when you don't get what you want. read more

I'd gone in yesterday and found a lehnga for my wedding reception that I absolutely LOVED. Unfortunately, since my mom was paying for it, I had to wait for her to see it the next day. When we got there, I saw the lehnga sitting on the counter, ready to be packed up for another customer. Tears!! This place is hit or miss. They have a wide selection of suits and saris, but their staff is arrogant. I came here with my wife to buy some clothes, but after I made a joke about a pattern on the sari, the lady started putting away the clothes and did not want to help us. Total opposite of the experience I had last year. Last year, the sales staff was very attentive and showed us almost 2 dozen pieces before we selected 2. Catchy name and eye catching sign. I passed by this store hundreds of times when I was an undergrad and always wanted to have a reason to get a Sari. Fast forward 10 years and my friend is having a traditional Indian wedding! One of my first stops is Sari Palace! My first reaction was-this place ain't that palacial. My second response was why is nobody helping me-I have all this cash burning a hole in my pocket! I went in with my friend who is from India originally and she felt the indifferent vibe also. Some lady did eventually help me and she was nice enough, but she had to keep on checking in with this sour faced owner/authority looking man whenever we had a question. I kinda like this place. I've never bought anything from this shop before, but I think it has the best selection of desi clothes in the bay. The service was okay, but I try to put myself in the sales peoples' shoes and understand that customers can be pretty annoying sometimes. The lady helping us was very attentive and clipped me in all places for proper fittings. She showed me a total of four lenghas, and I ended up purchasing the first one for some more weddings and receptions to be attended this year. The prices, and specifically, price tags are hilarious. I think the price tag on the green lengha that I selected was in the $600 range. I asked her how much it was and she replied $300 something, so about 50% off. This is a great place to practice some negotiating or bargaining skills, if you have an idea of how much work, fabric type and do some weird mental calculation of the overhead costs that go into the final product and transportation to the bay. I managed to get it down another $100, and had quite a fun time coming up with random stories to persuade uncle ji! The Punjabi tailor aunty on the second floor is also super sweet and does an amazingly good job guesstimating (I was a lil wary of her not taking down my measurements for the blouse fitting)! Overall, although the service isn't so hot, it's a great place with the newest and hottest designs. The Satya Pal store in Fremont is another great option, but it's super pricey, and more sari-focused. read more

If you want to feel like a movie star from bollywood you shop here and nowhere else coz everyone else sells saris that are outdated and suitable for a auntyji from the 70s. Asha, the owner visits India every 2 months and updates her collection based on the trends in India and sometimes far exceeds the excellence and passion of some of the best designers in India. She is truly in league of Ritu Beri, Manish malhotra and many of those designers whose clothes you dream of wearing once in your lifetime :) I love clothes and I spent nearly two weeks spending hours in every store speaking to the staff, going through the avaialable options and this is the only store in my research that stands apart as exclusive. If you pay 50 to 100 dollars more as compared to the rest, believe me it's worth it!!! The staff here are equally as passionate as the owner. They have a clean work environment with a good pantry upstairs. I like businesses that care for their staff. Plus Sari Palace has a tailor onsite and she is extremely efficient, she can alter your blouse in a matter of half hour. The jewelery collection is not as wide as the saris, lehengas and salwars they have.And did I tell you, you can pay a small advance to place a hold on a sari you like. I have place a hold on a $250 Sari by paying 40 bucks to be picked up within the week as I once had Bank of America blocking transaction on my card suspecting an irregular activity on my debit card which was just a false alarm. But again, due to excellent service and consideration at Sari palace, I am reunited with my beautiful excluise sari :) read more

My all time favorite indian clothing store! This place is clean, organized, spacious, and I love that they have a huge selection of clothes. I'm EXTREMELY hard to satisfy when shopping for clothes esp indian clothes. They have quality pieces and their sales people aren't pushy or annoying. A majority of my indian outfits are from Sari Palace and a lot of them are timeless outfits that I have worn for many years and will continue to wear for years down the line because the quality is so good. They will also custom fit outfits for you on the spot for little to no cost, and have it done the same day. Sari Palace is a little bit on the expensive side, but I'm more than willing to pay the extra $ for great quality, beautiful fabrics, custom fitting, and great service. Incredible selection of Indian clothes: saris, salwar kameez, and lenghas. There are children's clothes upstairs. From the moment I walked in until I left, it was a very pleasant shopping experience. All of the salespeople were super nice and very patient with me and my pickiness about color. Because of their huge selection, I found exactly what I was looking for, 1 wedding sari, 1 fancy salwar kameez and a chandni jewelry set. The owner Asha is super kind and has a very lovely and positive vibe about her. Also if you need tailoring, there's a sweet punjabi auntie upstairs, who I discovered is from the same village my dad was born in.. whoa, small world. Like the others said, don't be alarmed by the sticker price, you're likely to get a 50% discount if there's a sale going on, and if you buy multiple items, even more so. Make sure you know how to bargain, though. It'll still be pricey for some. The sari itself was $100 and I'm sure I could have worked on haggling them down, but I just don't really know how to do that. I love the weight and color and texture and sparkliness of the one I got. The saleswoman was very helpful, the seamstress upstairs managed to tailor my top to me by just eyeing me in 5 minutes, and then when I left my petticoat accidentally, they not only tracked me down, but held it for me for a week until I could have a friend pick it up for me. "My boyfriend needed to get his last fitting for an Indian suit for our friends wedding. I was only supposed to be there just to make sure I gave an honest opinion of his fitting. Let's just say, you can't help but be distracted by all the beautiful sari's and jewelry! The slacks were a bit snug so he asked if it could be made a bit looser. The lady who was mainly helping for the fitting smiled and said, "Sure that can be done in less than 20 minutes!" My man and I looked at each other, like as if we were expecting to wait another day or so, but she surprised the hell out of us both. While waiting for the slacks to be worked on, we made our way to the clearance items up stairs. I felt like I was in wonderland for I was picking out kurtas, tunics and other tops like crazy. Of course I wanted my boyfriends opinion on everything so he gave. Some items were amazing and some just were not quite right. Then viola! he saw a lady put a kurta back on the rack and grabbed it as if some crazy lady at a Macy's after Thanksgiving sale were going to snatch it right up. At first I was so hesitant to try it on...it was burnt orange mind you. But, needless to say, he has a good eye for what REALLY looks good, because it looked amazing! Our sales assistant even said it was perfect...as she was handing my boyfriend his slacks. He then tried on his suit and I couldn't believe at how perfectly fitted and handsome my boyfriend looked. I poked into all the sari stores on University Ave. the other day looking for my bridal outfit. This was the only one that didn't give me a dirty look when I asked for bridal lenghas (and I'm Indian by the way, but my Hindi is not so good). Asha was the lady with the answers, she showed me the catalog and described the process for getting a custom-made lengha. I will return here to buy my lengha. This is by far the best service I found of the sari stores. UPDATE: I finally went in to get my bridal lengha. Asha helped me pick out the perfect style for me. It is just what I wanted. I can't wait to get the final outfit (it's being made as we speak). I also picked up loads of accessories and saris for my bridesmaids. ANOTHER UPDATE: You have to understand that no where are you going to get great service at a sari store. That being said, I loved my lengha. There were a few issues: a few small spots on the top (they couldn't help me on that, luckily no one noticed them); a few stones missing (I asked for extra and just glued them on myself); the cups inside the top were weird (I had them remove them, but I had to go and ask twice). The bottom line is that I loved the outfit in the end and everyone thought it was very modern and pretty and looked good in the photos. Hints: go on a weekday for best service. I always thought Sari palace would be too expensive because their selections are so that extra dollar sign value ($$$). But I was quite impressed! I bought a GORGEOUS, and very unique suit for 200$, and I didn't leave with a bad taste in my mouth which usually happens from over-bargaining and haggling at indian clothing stores. This doesn't strike me as a place that you should bargain for that extra 10-15$, the owner arrives at a reasonable middle point for price, you just have to tell her your budget. But isn't that so nice not to exhaust yourself fighting for every last buck? And actually feel like you're getting your money's worth? Also, I am extremely picky and they were so patient with me as I shuffled through so many suits before arriving at the one I love- and I didn't feel rushed even though it was closing time. The owner actually waited for me 15 minutes after closing, and after all her other employees had left, and helped me find earrings that matched my suit. And folks! I wasn't dropping thousands for that kind of customer service at all :) These people know what's up, and know how to take care of their customers. After having a terrible experience at Roopam Sarees, I headed over to Sari Palace a little defeated by the lack of customer service and quality of clothes I had experienced from Roopam Sarees (and Saree Boutique). I was so pleasantly received and attended to at Sari Palace. You guys are awesome- thank you! I came to Sari Palace the minute I got engaged, even before I set a wedding date! My best friend had recently gone to the shop for her wedding outfit and had had such a positive experience that I knew I had to go in myself. When I walked in the store I honestly had no idea what type of outfit I wanted, and that made me very nervous. Fortunately Hiral, the owners daughter, was there and was able to make the process so easy and comfortable. Hiral spent hours with me going over what I liked, what I didn't like, and in the end helped me create the exact piece I had always envisioned. It was so nice to have someone with design knowledge sit with me and literally draw out what I was thinking and what my outfit would look like. I was able to pick out every last detail, even down to the color of the small stones we would use. Being able to create a piece that was unique to me was a great feeling. It was also very nice not having to worry about alterations or things not fitting right. Although we did have a few minor set backs with fittings, Hiral quickly took care of things and immediately sent the necessary items back to be redone so that it would be exactly how I had wanted. At the last minute I also decided to add some work to the sleeves of my blouse, and Hiral gladly said yes and didn't charge me extra for it (yay!). I know most people suggest going to India for bridal wear, mainly to cut costs, but honestly is it worth the headache? I am so happy I came to Sari Palace for my bridal outfit because I walked away 150% satisfied and did not have to stress once throughout the entire process. Every time I went into the store I felt that I had the full attention of whoever was working, and most importantly I never felt as though I was promised something that they were not able to do. Hiral was incredibly kind, as were her dad and the rest of the staff. I truly felt like family with them! I would highly suggest Sari Palace to all the brides out there! read more

I bought my wedding lehenga choli here and had a wonderful experience. As a silly white girl getting married to fine, fine Indian boy, I had no idea what to look for, what was appropriate, etc. They were extremely patient with me and very helpful in finding something that I liked and that my future in-laws would consider appropriate. The alterations were done quickly and very well. My sister bought her bridesmaid lehenga choli here as well, and they gave her the same great service. Oh, and I guess my husband got his wedding stuff there too. Their selection is the best I have found in the Bay Area, and they seemed to have the highest end stuff, too. They also had midrange and lower end clothing, as well as jewelry and beautiful fabric by the yard. Next time there's an Indian event on my husband's side of the family, I'll go to Sari Palace for the selection, quality, and service. read more

I got my nikkah lengha from Sari Palace last March. I had been searching high and low for months where I live (Los Angeles) and either couldn't find anything I like, or if I did like something it was outrageously expensive. I went on a quick trip to SF for my birthday and while we were there he suggested we stop by the shops in Berkeley just to see. The ladies were very helpful and the first lengha they pulled out for me turned out to be the one! We got it the same day and they altered it for me right away (for free), so we were able to leave with it within a few hours. Amazing service. I loved my lengha and got so many compliments on it - the skirt is made of pure silk with amazing swarovski stones as well as on the blouse and dupatta. I ended up getting my jewelry from Little India in Artesia when we got home, but that's okay. I'm so happy I found this place :) if I ever need another fancy outfit I'll definitely drive all the way back to Berkeley. read more

Very beautiful selection of Sari's - and I am picky! I went to numerous stores in the bay area and this was the only one with a stylish selection of Sari's and Lehenga's. The owner (Asha) and her husband know a lot about Indian clothing and were extremely friendly in helping me select what works best for me. I learned about what is in style in India and chose accordingly. Everyone (from India and US) loved the lehenga so much that they encouraged me to wear it for my main event in India as well. Some people have commented on the pricing...I think it's hard to compare the prices to other stores because the quality of the clothing at Sari Palace surpasses that of other stores in the US. Even my mother in law from India said that the Lehenga's are similar to what you find at expensive boutiques in India. The alteration lady can measure you up just by looking at you and she knows what she is doing. She did a great job! I have taken in my dress for a second alteration since I have lost a few pounds...so let's see how it goes! read more

Namanya (sp?) was so sweet and helpful. She helped drape and pleat the sari when I was trying it on, and also helped me wear it the day of my event. The entire store is beautiful, with different saris, lehengas, jewelry, etc. Just let them know the color/pattern you are interested in and your budget and they'll have it :) read more

The sari is the most amazing garment ever invented. I bought my first sari 10 years ago when most non-Indian women didn't know a sari from a burqa. According to Sari Palace owner Asha, more and more non-Indian women are discovering the mystique of the sari for weddings, parties, and special events and Sari Palace is the only place to go for gorgeous sarees, lehengas, and salwar kameez. A sari will make you feel like a goddess -- feminine and elegant. Asha has an extraordinary selection of sarees in various fabrics, designs, colors, and prices. Be serious about buying when you go in because "trying" it on takes time and improper handling can damage some of the more delicate silks and embroidery. But all of the women who work there are incredibly helpful and know their stock. One room is all sarees, in cubbies, stacked floor to ceiling. In the next room are lehengas -- usually worn by younger women and can be quite extravagant. Salwar kameez, a tunic/pants combination are both upstairs and downstairs. Upstairs are scarves, shawls, and a dazzling assortment of fabrics for creating the choli or blouse that's worn with the sari. The tailor is as sweet as a doting grandmother and takes good measurements to custom fit your choli. Asha travels to India several times a year and works with artisans there to create the sarees she proudly sells in her store. She and her husband have owned the store for 26 years and have a loyal following. Once you've met her and found a sari (or two), you'll be hooked. I told my companion the last time we were there that I wanted Asha to adopt me so I could acquire a some of her flair and style. Highly recommended! read more

The staff wore masks and were following Covid precautions. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic the store has not received new shipments ( I have heard for close to a year from the surrounding stores). I asked to see bridal lehengas in a specific color but was only shown 1 of my choice. The ladies were nice but were insisting that I place an online order for my choice of lehenga. I made it clear to them that I didn't come here to place an online order but came to see your in-store designs. They quickly gave up on showing me more items so I finally left. I was thoroughly disappointed since Sari Palace has always been the one place where the perfect outfit can be found. But again I can't blame them entirely. read more

Do not use the onsite tailor. She did a terrible job altering my outfit. Plus she didn't fix missing beads and the tie back was put in improperly and I asked her to fix it and she didn't. read more
