I am a white, American bride, marrying a punjabi and therefore, wanted a dress that is the perfect fusion of indian and american. Sari Palace delivered! On the day of my appointment, the mother-daughter duo helped me fully customize my lehenga and choli based on other things I liked from their website and additional inspo from the webs. I was able to pick and choose fabrics, embroidery types, straps and even the level of fluff under the lehenga. From there, desi aunties took my exact body measurements, asked questions about how Id style the outfit and what level of modesty or immodesty I hoped to have LOL Im very big-chested so it was lovely that they could customize my top for support and coverage.When I came to pick it up, about three months later, I was OVERJOYED. It is literally exactly what I wanted and fits like a glove. I also purchased my haldi and mehendi outfits here, one of which had to be taken out and a stain removed. They did it no problem and offered a discount, too. Every time I am in here, they greet me by name and are incredibly friendly. The selection is insane!! The only reason this is a four instead of five is because I do feel the price point is high for some of the off the shelf items but for custom, I felt the $850 I paid was reasonable especially when a lot of "american" wedding dresses are $1k+ in addition to alterations. read more

I had a really uncomfortable experience at Sari Palace. Reeya, the owner's daughter, came across as bossy and as if she thought she was better than everyone else. The staff were doing their best to help, but I felt uncomfortable hearing the way she spoke to them and directed them on what clothes to show. To me, the way someone treats their staff says a lot about their character and the business as a whole. I take that seriously when deciding where I want to shop. When I asked if they had a particular color for the bridal party, Reeya kept questioning who would choose that color and what it even looked like. The cashier was also rude about the bridal party's color preferences at checkout. I'm only a wedding guest, so those choices aren't mine to make, and I didn't appreciate being treated that way for simply asking. The prices felt very high for the quality. The pants from a $200 kurta pajama outfit ripped after one wear, which was really disappointing. I was also told there would be a two-week wait for a simple hem on a pair of cotton pants--just one inch on each side. That felt ridiculous for such a minor alteration. I don't typically write reviews, but I feel compelled to share my experience so others do not run into the same issue. I came to Sari Palace last week at the recommendation of a friend and in hopes of supporting a local business. I came with my sister-in-law to purchase two blue-toned lehengas for a wedding in March. The owner kindly offered two outfits for me to try, both extremely large for me. I asked if they had ones that were closer to my size, but the owner kindly reassured me that they would be able to easily tailor it to my size. We purchased two lehengas, mine for over $400 and my sisters for over $500. Fast forward to pick up today. The initial adjustments were way off and the top way too big. The tailors there tried to adjust it again at which point the seams were way off center, which I brought to their attention. The seamstress then said that it is difficult to tailor this top because of the zipper on the side. I asked if they could try to make it more centered and symmetric. They tried again 3 more times, at which point I had lost all confidence in their ability to appropriately tailor the outfit. None of the seamstresses took accountability for the lack of quality in workmanship, and they tried to convince me that it looked fine. The latest iteration was closest to fitting but still completely off center per the images that I've posted. I asked if I could come back with my husband (to have a second set of eyes) to have it re-adjusted and they said they would charge me for it. Overall, I feel I did not get a product worth the amount I paid. I am left feeling like the owner clearly misled me into believing that the oversized lehenga would be easily tailored to fit me for the purpose of getting my money. The experience shows total lack of integrity, and I cannot recommend Sari Palace in good conscience. Don't waste your time or money. read more

My sister purchased her bridal dress and jewelry set here, and unfortunately the experience was incredibly disappointing. The prices are extremely high for the quality you actually receive. You'll pay over $3000 for plastic sequins all over. Beaded embroidery fine, but just plastic sequins? The bigger issue was the jewelry set. It honestly looked cheap, with uneven coloring and a painted metal appearance. We came back hoping to exchange it, the younger manager immediately became defensive and said they don't "force" anyone to buy anything. No one said my sister was forced, the point was that this set never should have been recommended to her in the first place, especially at that price point. She felt pressured and ultimately regretted the purchase. My sister went back and I met her there to help her with the tough conversation. Any clarification questions I asked were dodged, and both managers spoke to me in a very dismissive and condescending way, even though I remained respectful the entire time. I think they got used to my sister saying yes to everything, then were unhappy to have someone question them. They then showed us another jewelry piece we actually liked, but it was almost $400 more on top of the $750 already spent. When I asked what made it higher quality or more expensive, the older manager straight up said "there was nothing different about the material or jewels" and that they were simply charging more because they paid more for it. That response alone said everything. To make matters worse, the bridal dress was packed tightly into a small bag. When we opened it, it smelled strongly of chemicals and glue. (Um....it was supposed to be hand stitched....so why glue smell?) When I asked about it, they casually told us to "just steam it...? like you do regular clothes...?" For a bridal gown costing thousands of dollars, the presentation and preparation were shockingly poor. I've purchased bridal dresses elsewhere that arrived properly hung, covered, and ready to wear. What's most disappointing is that I've recommended this place to many people over the years and have personally shopped here multiple times. After this experience, definitely won't be recommending anymore. The customer service, pricing, and quality simply do not match what they advertise. Go elsewhere, even worth traveling to LA to see their bridal offerings in Artesia versus defaulting to local shops in Berkeley/SF. read more

I understand that bargaining is common in India even though it's not my favorite part of the experience, I respect that it's part of the culture. My mom is very familiar with the pricing and quality of Indian outfits, so she tried to negotiate a fair price. Ultimately, she didn't feel the cost matched the quality, so we decided not to purchase anything. The staff's behavior was the most concerning part. While we were downstairs in the men's section, a younger woman who appeared to be a manager or owner approached another employee and spoke negatively about my mom while we were still there. It was uncomfortable and unprofessional. Additionally, the way the staff spoke to their employees came across as dismissive and rude, which created an overall unwelcoming atmosphere. At one point, my mom tried to look at items on a shelf and was told not to because they were arranged a certain way. The interaction felt unnecessarily rigid and unwelcoming. Overall, the environment felt tense, and the customer service did not match expectations. We ended up going to a nearby shop where the staff was much kinder and more respectful, and the quality of the outfits was noticeably better. read more

As a Punjabi woman who is also very tall it is hard to trust Indian clothes will fit but Harjinder showed me suit after suit after suit in any color I wanted with so much kindness & patience. I had a wonderful experience here. I am not Indian, but am going to be part of the wedding party for an Indian wedding. The three women who were working were so nice and helpful. This was the second store I went to. I am heavy and was told at the first store that ready made outfits in my size would be hard to find. The first store also wouldn't let me take pictures of myself in the one outfit in my size that I tried on so I couldn't get a second opinion. I also have a Sari that was gifted to me by the bride, but the blouse needs to be stitched. They don't do that which is fine, but when I asked to try on a ready made blouse they wouldn't drape the sari for me. All I could do was hold up the fabric. At Sari Palace my experience was the complete opposite. They had a great selection of outfits, let me try on lots of different styles and take pictures so I could get second opinions. They do stitch blouses, but it was going to take too long to get back. So I looked for ready made blouses and they had no problem draping my sari so I could see how it would actually look. They even did it twice because one of the women recommended I try a different blouse. Which was the blouse I ended up getting. They made an experience I was nervous about wonderful and so much fun. Four extremely helpful and sweet ladies at Sari Palace put together a wedding guest sari within a week for my friend's Indian wedding. 1). "Cashier lady" was the negotiator and probably one of the owners who had a stern face, but she's really sweet and gave me a reasonable price with discounts; 2). "Jewelry lady" picked out all the Indian head pieces that matched my description (pearl, crystals), and found one that was exactly what I was looking for right before I walked out- it was perfect! It originally cost $45 and she gave it to me for the price of $30; 3). "Fabric/bead details lady" picked out a sari "blouse" for me because they didn't have time to sew me one. So, she picked out a dark pink one with gold accents that went well with my sari skirt that they made. Yes, there was an unnoticeable huge stain on the left chest, but they offered me a discount from $65, and she found the exact beads to see in the back that were missing. She also helped me try on the whole ensemble and pinned the sari scarf so I'd have an easier time to wear it at my friend's wedding; 4). "Seamstress lady" made my dark pink, elegant silk sari skirt that was perfectly fitted to my body measurements. It looked amazing! $75 for a fitted sari skirt to be made from the Indian silk and material my friends brought back from India. Successful sari ensemble made me look like a South Indian princess, and it was all thanks to them! If you don't have time to get your sari made in India (way cheaper), then you can get it made here for $170 plus $45 parking ticket (Berkeley is known for their attentive parking attendants, ugh). read more

I had bought a beautiful timeless wedding lengha a few years ago during the pandemic from Sari Palace. The staff was supportive and helpful and even though it was the pandemic, they were able to offer a great selection and get my perfect silk lengha made to my fitting. Now, years later, I need this same lengha adjusted . The tailor-Mrs. Harjit Kaur --who has been with this store for YEARS, did a PERFECT alteration job. I can now wear this lengha at future events. The adjustment required not just a hem but a removal and remend of a belted area that had a specific design. She was able to perform this alteration seamlessly and professionally and efficiently. I do not know how she does this--she is the main alteration person for Sari Palace and has many clients and tasks to work on weekly--yet she still is able to make time to accommodate all her clients. thank you Harjit!! Everything in here is absolutely beautiful and EXPENSIVE. Want a fake silver necklace with earrings and a bracelet? $800 non-refundable. Want a Sari? $1,200 and up, non-refundable. Don't look closely at the bead work, you will see how crooked it is and even dried glue. Want to try on a specific color? Forget it, you have to try on the dress that's already out of the plastic. I had mixed emotions about this place. Initially I was very excited, but that soon evaporated. I stumbled upon this place via a quick google search. I was in need of a dupatta with medium work on it for my Nikkah. (I had bought my wedding dress in India but the dupatta wasn't decked out enough for a bride to be.) I understand it's a tough request for JUST a dupatta in the US, but I figured I'd try my luck in the Bay Area since I'm from Dallas and was in SF for work. I walked in with little hopes of finding the exact color or at least a similar design and explained my situation to them. Lo and behold, by the forces of the universe, I had finally found it!!! They actually had a few medium to heavy work dupattas lying around upstairs by the raw material. The seamstress told me they were from custom orders that maybe had a mismatch in color or design from previous customers. Another woman's trash turned out to be my treasure! Beyond excited I went downstairs to inquire about the price, since there was no price tag. I was expecting to pay $50-60 max since it was just the dupatta and not a full outfit. Yeah right!! The woman (At the register) quoted me $250!!! She must have been out of her mind! I said no way and immediately called my mom, who advised me to speak directly with the owner to see if he'd cut me a deal. I spoke with him, who was very nice btw, and he told me $175 was the lowest he could do... Which is still A LOT of money for a dupatta... but with my situation, this was going to be the best I could get. So I sucked it up and coughed up the cash. Yes, I know as a consumer I could have not purchased it and ordered something again from overseas, but it's the principal of a store/business using someone's situation as leverage to charge whatever they please... I don't live around here so its not like I'll ever shop here again, but for those that do. Please just be aware. An amazing store with a great selection and superb service!! My fiancee found her beautiful bridal lengha at Sari Palace!! The entire process was very easy with service that went above and beyond other stores we had visited previously. My fiancee and I were looking for our wedding outfits for a few days until we stopped by at Sari Palace. Not only did we find a large selection of beautiful bridal lenghas, but they also have excellent service! They were able to help my fiancee who is of Latin descent with all of her questions and did a great job of explaining the latest styles and how to wear the different styles of outfits. Other stores we had been to previously either were not interested in helping us or were too pushy. At Sari Palace we were greeted when entering the store and they really took care of us from there. They asked us what we were looking for and began to show us the many different styles and colors they had for bridal lenghas. My fiancee was able to try on all the ones she was interested in. They did not hesitate to bring out a variety of clothes and even took off clothes from the manaquin so my fiancee could try them on. They also explained to us that they are able to custom design and make alterations. The fabric and stitching of the clothes were of very high quality and for a very respectable price. Throughout the whole process they were very friendly and informative!! We felt at home when shopping at Sari Palace and can't thank them enough. Some were missing buttons, sizes were wrong, but the worst part was that some of the dresses were the wrong color?!?...6 weeks away from the wedding and we have no bridesmaid dress....SARI PALACE to the rescue!!! We told them exactly what we wanted and they spent a lot of time taking in each detail of the dresses to appease to our liking. They promised that we would have a bridesmaid dresses within 5-6 weeks, heck they got it done in 3.5 weeks flat. I use to shop here years back but now this place is not the same anymore. Couple times I went past the store I saw tacky fabric display on the doors and glass. Below are things I noticed in my recent visit " noticed before also never got a change to write my review: A) The ladies don't want to take out stuff that's behind the metal rack display to show. Not to mention my friend said he has been going here since he was 5 years old with his sister and they hide good stuff. B) when you ask for red , blue , green, pink colors , they take out beige and brown to show. C) they don't post accurate prices on the tags ! They expect to know what range you are looking for . -- how can you tell them the range when you don't know the exact price. If the tag says $1000 but the actual cost is $500 and after bargain it's $200 then what range should i provide! Should I say $1000 or $500? What a ripoff. I'm not comfortable speaking about the range. Show me the good stuff that you have then I can decide if it pleases my eye. For that reason I have walked out few times from this store. D) I picked out something from second floor which was couple sizes bigger. The lady told me $25 for alteration and the cost of suit was $150. You still paying $175 for a ridiculous out dated style and on top they want to charge for stitching. Use to be free for alterations when you bought from here. E) You can not repeat these clothes all the time so use your cash wisely and purchase at reasonable price online. You will get more clothes for wedding events for your same bucks. I encourage all the people who don't know about Indian pricing system to look online and purchase ahead of time to save yourself from the rip off. What needs to change! You know more and more people are going online to purchase so your cash intake is less now. Why not boost your revenue by changing old habits. You should change that habit to attract customers especially millennials. My family has been coming here for decades- all the staff is really helpful and super down to help without being pushy. They definitely will work with you, especially if you don't know much about Indian clothes like my family, to get the right clothes for the right event. This is definitely my recommended location for Indian clothes in the East Bay, or maybe the entire Bay Area. read more
