Just took my dad here for his 83rd birthday. It started out to be a nice time. The waiter was attentive, the hostess could not have been nicer, and the place had a genuinely upscale vibe. The paper towels in the bathroom were so soft I wanted to take them home - but I didn't. My issue was with the chicken limone I ordered. The plate consisted of some boiled linguini from a box, two of the smallest pieces of chicken I've ever been served, then topped with a very basic lemon sauce and a few capers. All this was $18 before tax and tip. I didn't take pictures because I was too embarrassed. But let me paint a picture for you. Imagine two McDonald's chicken nuggets. Now flatten them to be the thickness of a pencil. That actually may have been what they did back in the kitchen. I was sad because the lasagna my brother ordered looked awesome (and generously portioned). My dad's sandwich was fine. All our meals were around the same price so I don't get the difference in portion size. Anyway I can't forgive these two ear sized chicken things that took 4 bites to eat, leaving me with a plate of carbs I really didn't want. I was in Wheeling for work and stayed at The Westin, so Saranello's was my go to for breakfast and dinner. The breakfast buffet is pretty good, the food is super fresh and they offer a lot of options. Eggs, bacon and sausage, potatoes, yogurt and fruit, toast, muffins, fruit, coffee and juice. It's a good spread! I also dined for dinner once and I like the bread with olive oil to start. They had quite a few dinner options as well but I ultimately went with the gnocchi al a vodka. The gnocchi was cooked perfectly, the vodka sauce was amazing. The fresh basil was a nice touch as well. The service is consistently good as well and the prices fair. read more

The food is not that great and there's nothing unique about it at all. Service is bad - the person at the host stand welcomed me into the place by saying "welcome to maggianos....I mean, uh..." The place looks nice and you'd think it's a great place to go if you're staying at the hotel - I would say avoid it if you're at the hotel. We were treated pretty rough even as guests of the hotel, they act as a separate business so they don't really care where you came from once you come in the door. Try the German or Italian places across the street, or Cooper's hawk, really anything but this place, you'll thank yourself later. read more

One of my favorite brunches in the area! Mimosas, and a brunch buffet you can't go wrong! Saranellos is located right next to the Westin. There is plenty of free parking and has handicap parking right outside the main door for accessibility. We had reservations for brunch (only on Sundays from 10am-2pm) and were seated in a booth. The booths were large and spacious for the 3 of us. Once we were seated a waiter came by and offered us beverages (bottomless mimosas are included in the brunch price!), and we were on our way. The buffet was lavish with assorted breakfast meats, omelet station, carving station, entrees and of course, desserts. For the cost per person, the buffet is a great offering. The quality of food is great, and there is a great variety. The only reason I had to remove a star is because of the service, we had trouble getting beverages refilled even just water. They also kept taking our silverware and we would have to keep finding someone for new silverware to eat. Otherwise, we had a great experience and I would absolutely recommend and will bring family and friends bad. :) read more

We recently attended a successful Yelp Elite event at Saranello's, and were eager to return to try a dinner again after 2 1/2 years, so that I would update my review to 4 or even 5 stars.  We chose to have a dinner there to celebrate Valentine's Day, we were not looking for a romantic dinner with nice surprises, the bar was set not very high.  I pondered after the dinner for a long time and still could not elevate it to above 3 stars, there are pros and cons, good and bad in every aspect of our dinner there.  However, last time it was 2 1/2 stars rounded up to 3 stars, now it is 3.45 stars rounded down to 3 stars.   Firstly, it is about service.  The two women at the host area were aloof and didn't smile at all.  One woman just told the other one to lead us to number whatever "in the back".  She led us to turn to the right to the bar area, that I had never been to after so many years dining there.  Both women didn't even bother to ask if it was OK for us to sit in the bar area.  Our server Marc was friendly, though.  However, it looked like he was covering for many tables and might have been spread too thin.  His assistant took out the entrées for us and was courteous too.  There were several people coughing in this section, including a waitress who didn't serve our table.  When we were about to leave, this waitress came over and asked Hubby what his name was.  He answered her and then she handed him his credit card and said "He (our server) left your card in the machine".  We would have left without the credit card!  So, we thanked her profusely!  While we truly appreciate this waitress returning our credit card, I do believe that the restaurant has the responsibility of returning the credit card to the patron after charging him, as a member of their staff, she could have apologized for them too.  It was Valentine's Day, but no body said "Happy Valentine's Day" at all!   About the ambiance, the bar area was totally separated from the main dining area.  There were no chandeliers (although they only hang rustic ones in the main dining).  There were two wall TV sets showing different sports.  Some tables have displayed a vase with a rose, but it was missing at our table, Hubby had to steal one from an empty table.  Good thing that that table remained empty for the rest of the night.  There were unexpected pros of our seating, though.  We had a large C shape booth that was clean and comfortable.  It was at the end of the section right by the entrance/exit, while it was drafty from time to time, it hopefully provided more ventilation to the air of this section, in which some people coughed.  We found out that the exit was only steps away from the Westin Hotel lobby and main entrance, which made waiting for a car at the door easy.  The main entrance had automated doors that we like.  We also explored the lobby a little bit, which was nice and modern, good for business traveling.   Now onto the food.  The complimentary Italian bread was warm and very good, crunchy on the outside and soft inside.  I had a Blood Orange Lemonade ($7.95) which was a mocktail and was very good in a large size, with the right amount of sweetness and tartness, I would order again.  We also ordered two Clus Du Bois chardonnay ($12 each) which were nice.  We each ordered a King Crab Tagliatelle ($37.95 each), which was tasty and the pasta was cooked al dente and just right.  It was only available from the Valentine's specials though.  The small House Salad ($8.95) had nothing special to write about.  The Banana Tiramisu ($8.95) was always big, creamy and yummy here, large enough to share.  What surprised me was how salty that little cup of Minestrone ($6.95) was!  I bet the chef must have forgotten and seasoned the soup twice! There was a 3% "Restaurant Surcharge" on the check, a fee that was added when there was the pandemic, but I wonder why it is still added now.   We feel that the restaurant targets travelers who want a casual dinner and nothing fancy.  We saw a couple tables of patrons entering directly from the hotel side.  All in all, it was not a bad meal, but there were rooms for improvement.  As the restaurant is only 6 minutes from us, we will still go there for casual dinners and rustic Italian food. read more

This may not bother others but we waiting a really long time for the bread basket and we finally had to flag down one of the busboys to get it - they used to bring it right after you sat down. There are plenty of Italian restaurants in the area - what Saranello's did so well was serve you that hot, crusty bread right when you sat down. Maybe that results in some people ordering less but for my family of 5 it started the feast and everyone ordered an appy and entree. So I am not sure if this is a policy change or a slow night but I probably will not not go back again and spend the usual $300 to treat my family. Your loss Saranello's. read more

This is by far my favorite Italian restaurant. I've been here many times. I made a reservation but I didn't need to as there were plenty of seats available when we entered just before 5:00 on a Friday. We were seated and were given our choice of tables. Their bread comes out first with olive oil and parmesan cheese. The bread has a thick crust with a soft center, just like a good Italian bread should feel and taste. My favorite feature is that all of the pasta is handmade daily. As Sherwin C. tells me "it's so bouncy", which is the sign of a good noodle. They have a very good noodle which means that despite many other good entre choices, I almost always pick a pasta dish. I got the potato gnocchi. It was delicious. It was light but satisfying and filling. The server was pleasant and attentive. Insider tip: if you need to, take advantage of the bathroom here. It is one of the nicest bathrooms I've ever encountered at a restaurant. Saranello's deserves a five star rating for the fancy, clean and upscale bathroom. The restrooms are on the second floor and you have to traverse a narrow staircase to get there, but it's well worth the trip. Saranello's is a fantastic Let Us Entertain You Restaurant. Ordered fried calamari and the mussels as an appetizer for a party of 4. It was the perfect amount of food to not get full before your entree. The calamari was crispy and flavorful. We ordered the mussels with white wine and it came out hot and fresh. Ordered the New York strip steak as medium rare and it came out perfectly cooked. It was a bit bland so i added salt and pepper to enhance the taste. Truffle fries were fresh and the portion was enough for two people. The ambiance inside is amazing. This restaurant is attached to the Westin hotel on Milwaukee Avenue in Wheeling, IL. First thing to know is no matter when you go, you're probably going to want to make a reservation. I've never seen a time where they're not busy, but it's always worth the wait. It's a comfortable low lit, almost speakeasy type vibe. Great for date night, girls night or even a business meeting. To say the food is fantastic is an understatement. I get the same thing every time that I go but anything else that I've tried has been phenomenal as well. The entire staff is welcoming and attentive and I've literally never had a bad experience here. While it's definitely not an all the time destination, I have to go at least a couple times a year. Out of all of my favorite restaurants to visit, Saranellos simply offers an environment that I feel so comfortable in, and the service is something above the rest. They are stellar. It could be the delicious freshly made pastas and meals, or the amazing service received from the friendly people that work there. The dinners are amazing, but my go to is Sunday brunch "oink oink". Especially when they have ravioli on the menu! It's so delicious!! But honestly, so is everything else I've had. Let's not forget the unlimited mimosas and bellinis served with brunch on Sundays from 10a until 2p. I'm leaving the area for awhile for work, and I am truly going to miss this place, and everyone I've had the pleasure of seeing there. 5-stars all the way. We went here for our 8th anniversary and the service and food was amazing! Bobby was our server and he was attentive, bubbly and gave great recommendations. The Chicken Pesto was rich and creamy, I requested it spicy and the kitchen added the perfect amount of red pepper flakes. The lobster ravioli tasted like a delicious deconstructed lobster bisque. I appreciated the fact that he even told us what menu items he enjoys but may not work for us based upon the questions we asked. Mixed feelings. More of a 3.5 but I'll give them four because the service is friendly and the atmosphere is good. I really enjoy being here. There's a pleasant vibe and it's quiet enough to have a conversation without yelling. The bread they serve you with olive oil is among the best in the area, and the pasta definitely tastes homemade. I also enjoyed the calamari appetizer, though it was expensive and not the best I've had. My main quibble is they put cheese on everything without asking and without mentioning it in the menu description. I'm almost certain my shrimp and linguini had a touch of parmesan, which I despise. My wife, who's allergic to dairy, detected the taste of cheese/cream in her minestrone soup, where cheese definitely doesn't belong. This is after my wife went out of her way to ask the waiter what the soup's base was and was told vegetables. My wife also ordered a pasta with garlic and olive oil and it came soaked in cheese. She had to send it back. Again, she was told the pasta was simply pasta with those two ingredients. No one mentioned dairy when she ordered but they admitted it when she complained. This restaurant isn't alone in dumping cheese on everything, and it's a shame. Good Italian food doesn't need this ingredient, but if the restaurant thinks it does, at least make it clear so no one is disappointed. read more
