We celebrated our 40th anniversary there yesterday, and we can't remember having a better anniversary dinner. The staff were fun and generous, letting us try unusual wines and making great suggestions. The food was unbelievable. We did the Rock'n'Roll tasting menu, and there were no duds. Unfortunately I've been here a couple times and the food and service is great. This most recent time, my friend and I got severe food poisoning. We know it was from Sansho because it was the only common item we had over the past few days. I love this place and it really makes me upset to leave a review like this because it really is an awesome spot. Was looking to have a really good meal while on a business trip. I was able to snag a last minute reservation here (previous trip they were fully booked). The restaurant is very simple and modest, but the food is what real really shines here. I did the 6 course menu and wasn't disappointed! The courses are a bit of fusion, but you can def. get the asian influence in a lot of the dishes. One of the highlights was the clam dish, I'm not usually a fan, but here it hit the spot. The staff and servers were very welcoming. The prices are affordable considering the quality and amount of food you get. This was the highlight of my trip to Prague. It came highly recommended by our AirBnb host, (make a reservation, as they barely take walk ins!) and we got a spot for a Saturday evening. Sansho is near the Jewish Quarter in old town, and is easily accessible by foot/tram. The restaurant itself is very simple and basic, which means the food definitely steals the show. It is Michelin rated, and they proudly display that on their window. We were seated by very friendly staff which gave us a rundown of how the menu works. For 1000 CZK per person, they provide 5 starters and 1 main course that is chosen by the chef. It's pricier than most places in Prague, but 100% worth it. We started with the salmon sashimi, mussels with homemade toast, salmon egg with pork and prawn dumplings, crispy melt in your mouth pork belly, SOFT SHELL CRAB sliders, and the main dish which was a fusion of pork knuckle and clams with rice, veggies and a trout salad. The menu here is thoughtful, bright, and absolutely incredible. Everything was so delicious and beautiful, and the ordering was perfection. The staff was so sweet and fun, and more than happy to explain the dishes and give more information. I wasn't expected to be stuffed, but I found myself filled to the brim after everything was served. If I ever come back to Prague, I'll 100% come back. Everyone raves about the pork belly... well, not quite everyone. It's solid but isn't worth the hype. It's actually a bit too generic, really, to even be a signature dish. To be fair, Sansho isn't about signature dishes, they're about a welcoming, delicious experience all around. And there, they deliver. Soft shell crab bun is delicately done, surprisingly mild in flavors, yet excellent. The duck and lobster dumpling noodle soup has an intense broth and a rather small portion of noodles, yet it is delicious by any measure, and the intensity works well. Staff are friendly enough, the cucumber infused water is a great touch on a warm summer day, and the outdoor seats on the little town square are lovely. Well worth a visit. read more

Sansho is a gem of a place for people who want a standout meal without all the pretension. Set in a nondescript building and decorated in a very spartan way, Sansho delivers on what the focus should be on - the food. The 6 course tasting meal was fantastic. Chef's starter was a perfectly grilled pork neck. And then it kept getting better from there - Bloody Mary oyster shooter, salmon sashimi with citrus, soy and sesame (a standout) pork belly, lamb wrapped in what can only be described as two leaves that resembled the taste of black pepper and mint (unreal!), razorneck clams in a yuzu broth with grilled bread, soft shell crab sliders with horseradish on bao, and grilled pork with papaya salad and coconut rice (perfection!). Add to it wonderful cocktails and you have an amazing experience. Did I also say that our server was incredible and the price was incredibly reasonable at $70/person? Because he was and it was! What a find! This place was not too far from my hotel and so glad I came here. Fortunately, I came early and did not have a reservation, yet was able to get seated immediately. For a person from NYC, this place was a gem and the price was extremely reasonable. If I had this meal in NYC, it would have cost at least 3-4 times the amount I paid in Prague. We dined here for lunch during a nice sunny day in Prague and went ahead with the tasting menu. Starting with the good: the service and presentation are both at a 5-star level. The wait staff was very attentive and begin every meal by asking for dining preferences and food allergies - they then get the chefs to substitute in alternatives for each diner whenever needed. Unfortunately, though, the food failed to live up to our expectations. Our party didn't request any substitutes, but the flavors of each dish generally seemed out of whack for a high-quality restaurant. The salmon sashimi and soft shell crab sliders with wasabi cream were probably my favorites, but the pork belly dish was much too salty and the beef and roti dish was just average. Sansho was our first dinner in Prague - it was the only time that worked with our schedule and we weren't so focused on being tourists that we had to eat Czech food the first night. We put our trust in the chef and did not put any restrictions on the food we were served and were wowed by the clams in a savory broth (which I never would have ordered on my own) and the octopus in peanut sauce (which my dining companion would never have ordered on his own), as well as the other dishes. Let's start with the excellent customer service! Prague is not known for it's good customer interactions in general, but all of the servers and staff here were excellent. A very welcome change. We got a last minute reservation and thoroughly enjoyed our Friday evening six course menu. Small bites all around for sharing, and everything was quite flavorful and well-presented. Having lived in Asia for 20+ years, the flavors were definitely on the S.E. Asian side of things, pretty authentic, but also orginal. I dropped by for lunch today and was actually (for the most part) pleasantly surprised. I came for the duck soup, which they didn't have, and I was sad, BUT decided to stay anyways. I ordered the pork belly sliders and the dry, sweet pork with coconut rice and papaya. Needless to say, I was stuffed when I left but I actually finished all my food! Pork belly sliders - A+. As soon as I bit into one I immediately understood the fuss (and this is coming from someone who usually doesn't like Asian fusion). The bun was perfectly steamed and fluffy, the garnishes nice and fresh and flavorful, and... the pork! It was fried to crispy perfection and seasoned nicely, BUT the kicker was that they spread the sauce on the bun so it wouldn't make the pork soggy. With every bite, I got a nice crunch. Good job, Sansho. You know what you're doing with these bad boys. The dry, sweet pork was not as good as the sliders, but still decent. The seasoning of the rice and the pork was really good (even though I tasted a bit of burnt garlic in the pork, sad). But what I couldn't get over was the papaya salad. It was underseasoned and didn't do ANYTHING in terms of flavor for me. I ate a few bites, wanting to like it, but then gave up. Overall, if you're an Asian fusion fan, stop by here. Came here for lunch after reading great reviews and I am so pleased with my decision. I made it to the restaurant a few minutes before the kitchen closed in the afternoon and thankfully, they agreed to serve me! The waiter recommended the softshell crab sliders commenting that this was their most popular appetizer and I also ordered a daily special of sweet pork with papaya salad and coconut rice. Both were phenomenal! After being without good asian food for the past few weeks I was so happy to be able to enjoy something not only extremely tasty, but also full of authentic southeast asian flavors. For dessert I got half an order of sticky toffee pudding and half an order of the chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich with peanut butter ice cream - a nice option the waiter offered me so I could try a few different things. Both were rather sweet, but nevertheless very enjoyable. Wait staff let me sit and enjoy my tea and dessert for as long as I pleased which was greatly appreciated. All in all - flavorful superb southeast asian cuisine, welcoming and attentive staff, far from the tourists, unpretentious atmosphere - honestly, the perfect restaurant experience. Brian W. in a earlier review captured the essence of this restaurant perfectly. It was a two hour dinner experience, and it was definitely interesting. I've provided some additional photos for reference. My favorite thing was the mussels. The other items were presented with fairly uncommon tastes, but things were generally more sweeter than I personally preferred. Oysters on a half shell came from Normandy - they ain't got anything on US Oysters (I'm thing Long Island Oysters, ie. WellPoint, Bluepoint, etc). Cost was broken out by item even though it was a "surprise set menu" and there was no a la carte option at the time we came. Receipt was itemized to the bowl of rice. We didn't have a reservation, and we were able to get seated on a Friday evening. It looks like half the folks here had reservations and half didn't. I sat inside, and around 8:30 or so, I overheard that requests to sit outside were politely being denied. Outside seating shuts down at about 9 pm due to the law. It seemed like there was only one point in the evening at which a 30 minute wait had built up. We were so stuffed by the end of the night we couldn't even finish the main, no matter how much we tried. Stairs down the men's room dang near killed me, but then again, so did the super fast down escalators in some of the train stations, so it might be a local convention I'm unaccustomed with. Service was pretty decent for us. It seems to be a theme for us in Prague where service is a bit cold when waiting to get seated, but once settled in, the servers become as friendly as in the US. read more

If you have never been here before, there is no menu to choose from; you get what's on the menu for the night. A bit different, but very fun. After eating each dish, we kept asking what was next! I found all the dishes very tasty and delicious. Make sure you're ready for seafood, because you'll be served salmon, clams, trout and soft shell crabs. The expectations I had for Sansho outdid the reality. The food here was decent, but compared to other Asian fusion restaurants in other cities, this is average. The FOOD: Salmon sashimi: a bit of a rough cut with the sauce not being too well emulsified. I kept having to stir my fish around in the sauce to integrate everything. Soft shell bao: one of the fluffiest steamed buns I've had, this was probably my favorite thing we ate here. The crab was nicely crisp and the creamy sauce wasn't overdone. Pork and watermelon salad: TOO MUCH HOISIN! The sauce seemed like it was just hoisin and nothing else. It wasn't reinvented. It was way too sweet. I did enjoy how crispy the pork was, but the flavors were overpowered by all of the sauce. Pork and papaya with coconut rice: the papaya was very odd to me. I kept wanting it to be papaya salad, but it wasn't. It wasn't fresh, tart, tangy, sour, spicy--the combination that makes traditional papaya salad addictively delicious. I know it wasn't supposed to be a direct interpretation of papaya salad, but it wasn't a delicious enough dish on its own to make me forget about traditional papaya salad. Also, the rice was very al dente for my taste. Overall, the food quality was good, but the flavors were not always well balanced and well combined. The service was friendly in a Czech way and you can tell they try hard, but I wouldn't recommend a visit unless you're so curious you can't stay away. read more

BEST FOOD IN TOWN! Sansho is on a quiet street in the Old Town district. The outside of this restaurant looks like whatever (might have a hard time finding this place at first) and the inside looks just OK, nothing exceptional. BUT now I know where the owner decided to spend most of his money-chefs. The food was incredibly delicious! I cannot praise more. We were a party of 6 and had their regular 6 course meal (yes, 6!) every course was amazingly delicious especially the pork belly dish. Any thing you order will be good so don't be afraid. I can't even describe how wonderful my time at Sansho was. As someone traveling alone you often feel a little odd at meals. At Sansho I felt like one of the family. And the folks working there felt like they were one big family just all hanging out together ! And that bonhomie translated to excellent food, impecable service, and an amazing experience. The chef/owner was walking around and talking to everyone, and seemed to know everyone in the neighborhood as well. The other people working there provided fantastic service but were also really easy to talk to and made me feel really welcome. The food was amazing. I quite like the concept of no menu, and the dishes were creative. Creative in a way that pairs of flavors that traditionally go together are seemingly randomly chained through each dish. However, I didn't like the final construction. It often had contradicting tastes that created cacophonous clashes. For the price range in Prague, I think it's overpriced for the experimental flavors I experienced. See below for comments on individual dishes of the day. The first dish was salmon sashimi with peppers, sesame, chive, and ginger. Average overall flavor. The salmon was not as fresh as it could have been. The second dish was fried soft shell crab bun with wasabi based sauce. I didn't like the wasabi flavored creamy sauce with the bun. The third dish was star fruit salad with jasmine tea infused smoked trout. Salad was fresh and nice, and fish was nicely flavored, but the combination didn't work for me. Somehow the fishy chewy jerky fish cancelled the freshness of the salad. I didn't like it, but my wife loved this dish. The fourth dish was crispy and pork belly, hoisin sauce, watermelon, mint, and cilantro. Watermelon with mint together was very nice, but too much hoisin sauce overpowered the flavor. The fifth dish was pork dumplings with salmon roe, and creamy sauce. This was the most harmonious dish of the day. Salmon roe was not super fresh though. The main dish was fish curry, mutton curry, and some greens. Fish curry was quite good. Mutton curry was totally non-Indian flavored. It looked like normal curry, but then it tasted very much like pulled mutton drenched in BBQ sauce: did not taste good. read more

Returning to Prague after a four-year absence, the first restaurant we booked was an old favorite -- Sansho. And I'm so pleased to report it may have gotten even better. Our party of five dined outside in the shadow of the beautiful Church of St. Peter. Every course of the degustation menu was an absolute delight -- wafer-thin salmon sashimi with the most delicate, perfectly balanced ginger sauce, a divine octopus satay, the most ethereal shrimp dumplings, accompanied by deliciously briny salmon roe, glistening mahogany pork belly, soft-shell crab sliders on melt-in-your mouth steamed buns. Oh my. The service is splendid, with very good English spoken. This place is just perfection! read more
