Our first time here and not sure we will return. The food was just okay. I ordered poached eggs to go with my avocado toast and they came out more as hard boiled. The restaurant itself was not the cleanest and restroom was not the best. Giving it three stars because our waitress Tasha was awesome or it would have been a one star rating. This place has the small hometown diner feel with plenty of parking. Sandy and her staff treat us like family and did I mention the breakfast is delicious. My husband loves the chicken fried steak and I'm a half skillet type girl. They have daily special breakfast on their chalk board at the entrance that I occasionally take advantage of. The coffee is also very tasty. (Pro tip) if you ordered coffee while eating breakfast, you can ask for a to go cup of coffee and they will gladly do it for you! Must try if you're in the area. The food was okay, it was very bland and on top of that the service was slow because the workers kept side eyeing us as we were waiting to be seated and many seats and tables were open. It was not until a white couple walked in they helped them then us (we were only a party of 3) which makes no sense. SANDYS CAFÉ IS A JOKE. Some friends and I got together to have a nice breakfast to celebrate the new year. We came to this restaurant expecting it to meet our standards. IT DID NOT. Right off the bat the owners daughter was rude towards all Hispanics (aka racist). We had just received our coffee when the owners daughter started yelling at all of us asking who parked in a no parking spot. After yelling at everyone, the owner of the vehicle got up and waived at her saying he was going to move it. The man was a older man who spoke only a bit of English. My friends and I were so confused as to why the girl was talking to him the way she was, we were disgusted by her customer service. We weren't going to leave but as the man walked towards the door the OWNER walked in YELLING at him. Asking why he parked in the no parking zone. The "No parking spot" was actually just her parking spot. The man let her know he was already going to move it. He came back inside and told his wife he wanted to leave (he felt uncomfortable). They paid for the food and left. My friends and I decided to leave, (keep in mind, hadn't even touched our food yet) the owner yelled at us threatening to call the cops then proceeded to record us.... We let her know we didn't touch our coffee but left them a 20 dollar bill anyway so she'd STOP COMPLAINING. We didn't want to deal with a racist lady who doesn't appreciate her clientele. I went so much into detail because I believe that Sandy's Cafe does not have the customer service piece it should have. Instead of aggressively yelling at the man who had gone in to eat with his wife for parking in a spot that reserved for the "owner" they should have kindly asked him to move it. Although it's had a Country Kitchen makeover the bones of the original diner are very visible in the roofline, the rock wall entry, and the breeze block style circles in the cement wall in back. With classic diners dying daily and Denny's serving crappy fast food it's refreshing to find a diner serving authentic diner food and offering the classic experience. Omelettes, hash browns, pancakes were all perfect. The coffee is kinda bad but that's often expected at Diners. I live near here but never got around to trying it until a few days ago. The place is small and cozy, and the tables and floors are kept very clean. There's ample parking outside, and the restaurant itself was very beautifully decorated. The menu was very straight forward and I ended up ordering a blueberry waffle. When the waiter brought my waffle, he asked if I wanted whipped cream and powdered sugar, then very meticulously put them on my waffle. The attention to detail here was amazing! The waffle was delicious, and when we went to pay, the owner (I'm assuming Sandy) gave us a free meal because my friend is an Oakland PD. Sandy's son apparently works at San Jose PD so she happily said the meal was on the house as a thank you for my friends service. She was so kind and generous, and we will definitely be returning to add to her collection of cop items that she collects! read more

Stopped by for breakfast at 11:30am before hitting the Garlic Festival. Easy parking, no wait, quick and friendly service and crazy reasonable prices. Tried 1/2 special skillet, a biscuit with gravy (which they subbed for a side with my skillet --cool) and a short stack of pancakes. Skillet was excellent!! Small pieces of diced ham, peppers and onions in a cheese potato'ey grilled and a bit greasy (expected) bowl of goodness. Great flavor. Pancakes were standard fare, nothing special, as was the gravy over a nice fresh biscuit. The best gravy I ever had was at the military chow line, and I measure the quality of the gravies against that experience. We would return.... read more

Had lunch at Sandy's today. The chicken noodle soup was awful and sent it back. It was thick gravy with processed chicken parts. The corned beef in the Ruben was really bad, with lots of fat and dried out. Turkey sandwich was your deli turkey on white bread, House salad was actually good. My family and I (total of 5 people) came here as travelers and first time visitors to Gilroy. Our hotel recommended this place as a good local brunch place but coming here was the biggest mistake. Not only is the food mediocre at best, but the service was extremely slow. We were told the wait time for food was 30 minutes but we waited ALMOST TWO HOURS for our food. We waited as the restaurant was emptying out and watched as some people who came before us received their food (one table had more people than us). We ordered their basic breakfast plates too. At the end when I mentioned the wait time to the manager she was rude and didn't acknowledge the long wait time. What stood out to me most was the act of kindness done by Sandy's Cafe's very own Sandy. My husband and I decided to take our boys ( 1.5 & 2.5 years old) to breakfast before Gilroy Gardens. We arrived to the restaurant, got seated instantly and within 10 minutes we had our drinks & our order had been taken. We were waiting and as some of you may know, toddlers are VERY fidgety, loud, HANGRY! The boys were trying to climb the seats, screaming, laughing (obnoxiously) and I started getting very nervous and anxious. As a young mom, especially with 2 toddlers & during the pandemic.. I started wondering what other customers were thinking or if they were annoyed, etc. I saw Sandy walking towards our table and got super nervous. She could have: asked me to leave, asked my to quiet my boys down but instead she brought me a plate of cut up strawberries and said "here, they're hungry" with a smile & walked away. The boys of course started eating the strawberries and calmed down. It took all of me to not break down in that moment. I started crying because I don't think Sandy realized how safe and comfortable she made me feel in that moment. Many parents, especially of toddlers, hate eating out because of all the criticism / looks we receive on our babies behavior. Sandy, thank you so much. I am updating my review of this place. A few months ago a friend told me it's his favorite breakfast spot, which shocked me, until he told me it had a new owner since I had reviewed it in 2013. So I have gone there twice in the past month, and it has surely improved! Sandy is the owner now and the place as made a full turn around and is now one of my "go to" breakfast spots. I had the chicken fried steak and eggs which was outstanding! One person I was with had the French toast special, she had to ask for the food to be re-heated when it came out, it she said it was really good. The other person I was with had a cheese burger that he said was "outstanding" but the fries were a little cold. This was on a busy Sunday late morning. On the second trip we had all breakfast foods and everything was hot and tasted great, decent portion sizes etc. On both trips the silverware was not real clean, it they also had a sign saying they were hiring a dishwasher hahaha. Amazing fresh delicious food and friendly efficient service. I had the waffle combo that comes with eggs, bacon, and hash browns. The bacon was cooked to crispy perfection and wasn't salty which was nice. The waffle was really good, warm, chewy, toasty, and tasty. Our waitress kept our coffee cups full of good smooth coffee. Had good experiences in the past - good quality food and good-sized portions, but today- after convincing my boyfriend to try this place- I got my pancakes with a long string hanging out if it! When I told the waitress she said "ok" -uh, no, not ok...may I please hear "I'm sorry about that, let me get you another one?" Nope. Asked for a new pancake and she said "oh, ok" She went to the cook and he shot me a dirty look...ok, I don't want a new pancake. I'm sure you understand why. I thought I would give them another try, my eggs were so over cooked I should have sent them back. The rest of the food was good. I used to be a cook and if I were to hire a cook I would order them to do eggs every way you can and see if they could handle that correctly before I hired them. They put the chicken fried steak "to go" order on aluminum foil in the styrofoam container. The steak was FULL of gristle and hard to cut. So what happened?? The aluminum foil went ALL IN THE FOOD as I tried to cut up the meat. These cooks don't know what they are doing....ruined what should have been a great lunch...most of this meal went in the trash, definitely won't go back... :( read more

After eating there, I wished I lived closer to enjoy this delicious breakfast daily! hash browns...crazy good, corned beef hash...crazy good, Ortega omelet...crazy good! breakfast is breakfast and it can become mundane and boring. Even though the items we ordered are typical, they tasted untypically delicious. Our waiter Steve Chab was freaking amazing! so much energy. You can tell he is dedicated to his job and customers. I don't know if he's a manager but he was a boss!!! my wife's toast had come a little crunchy, he asked if she was ok with it or wanted a new order. My first impression of the restaurant was how clean and orderly everything was. They have high standards at Sandy's cafe. It was difficult to choose between breakfast choices. We tend to lean towards breakfast with veggies and there were at least 4 options. We ordered the 1/2 skillet and the chef's choice omelet. Lots of veggies and totally delicious. If you love breakfast and are in the area, do yourself a favor and stop in. You won't be disappointed. Turn-over was quick so the wait wasn't painful. Although, there were groups of people standing at the enterance like it was the worst thing ever. My thought, "then go stand outside where there's plenty of space!" The pancakes are huge and fluffy. (Get the pancakes!) My husband was feeling his Canadian bacon and eggs and our coffee cups were never neglected. Orange juice is freshly squeezed too! Great for large groups and famillies. This place is a gem. I am stuck for a day at a nearby Truckstop so I stayed at the Motel 6. I ate at Sandy's for breakfast as it was my only option. The menu did not have Chorizo on it, so I asked if they had it, which they did. The chorizo they use is made locally and is very good. My waitress was superb. Sandy was walking around and talking to all the customers. She was delightful when she cashed me out. Overall a great dining experience. read more
