Five stars, but with a real caveat: the equipment and technical side was rough. We came in on a busy Sunday for a birthday outing with six D&D loving adults, and we had multiple technical issues during the game. Several wristbands had to be tightened awkwardly because they were not staying on correctly, and we had to stop around five times during the session to fix equipment or tracking issues. For something this short and this expensive, that part was frustrating. With that said, we still had a great time. The experience is kind of like the mini golf of the future: a little janky, a little cheesy, a little stupid, and genuinely fun. Even with the stops, we were laughing, yelling, trying to coordinate, and talking about it afterward. I would not go in expecting a perfectly seamless sci fi theme park ride. Sandbox VR is one of my favorite places to visit when looking for something fun to do with friends. I've played a handful of their games over time, and the experiences seem to get better with each visit thanks to the improving technology. I still remember my first game at Sandbox VR--back then, the setup included a bulky mini-PC strapped to your body and a heavy headset. Fast forward to now, the headsets are much lighter, and all the gear allows you to move freely, which really enhances the immersion. The only downside is that the staff can sometimes be a bit inattentive. It's taken multiple attempts at times to get assistance, and on one visit our game had completely finished for several minutes before anyone came by to help us remove our gear. The initial check-in and introductions are always friendly, but once the game begins, support can be slow to follow. Overall, though, Sandbox VR remains a unique and exciting group experience--especially as their technology continues to evolve. read more

We came here with a group of 8 for a birthday. Everyone read the instructions properly. They tell you to come 15 minutes in advance but really, you won't even get to play until like 45 minutes after your booked time, due to the delays and lack of organization of the workers. They split us in 2 groups, telling 4 to sign in one time slot, then 4 in another. For some reason the system kept switching one of the players. It didn't seem like a big deal and easy fix but their system made it more complicated than it needed to be and added an extra 10 minutes. The group that was supposed to go second, ended up getting geared and went first. The first group kept getting move around. They told us we couldn't sit where we were sitting because another group was getting ready, then we got moved, then moved again. Pieces of devices were missing and mine was broken. The strap didn't secure and was ripped. They told me to use it anyways. The whole set up process took SO long that by the time we started our game, our other group was practically done...it's quite expensive to play for 30 minutes. Not to mention we spent more time in the facility waiting, moving to another area, gearing up, than the actual game. While you're playing the game, the VR headset is VERY heavy. Everyone was covered in sweat and our goggles kept sliding down from it. The microphones have a slight lag so when you talk, you can hear it outside the headset then lagging in the headset. The whole experience was so unorganized and annoying. The rooms are all open as well so you can hear other people screaming the entire time. Would definitely not come back. read more

Second time coming and this experience was a lot better than the first. Our first experience was 5 for vibes and overall attitude and fun with our group, but we had a lot of technical difficulties this was about 3 years ago shortly after it opened when there was only 2 or 3 games to choose from. We had to constantly stop our game due to a player or two not having any vision, and their weapons not working. This time, there were no issues! Staff did a double check before we got in and after we were in the games. We had people who needed help with getting the game in focus but other than that was perfect. We played the Squid Games games and it was super fun! Very approachable for a mix of players and abilities. read more

What a cool event space. Compared to Escape rooms, this is so much more fun, interactive, engaging, and highly collaborative. Book your experience online. Plenty of spots are always open but book ahead for ease of check in. Once you walk in, you sign in at the tablet kiosk. An employee will walk up to confirm your booking and prepare you for your tactical gear. They'll also photograph a selfie of you and allow you to name your group. Why? Well you'll see why. It's very cool. Get into it and don't be afraid. Our first experience as a family started with the Squid Games experience. The second time we went with deadwood phobia. Deadwood phobia was soo sickkkk! I had so much fun. I thought I'd be scared out of my mind but my fight or flight mode instantly kicked in with an urge to save and protect my family. My 5 year old also enjoyed it. While it can seem traumatizing for a young one, he did well. The only small but not large issue was that he couldn't hold the faux assault rifle upright but that's because he's a child. It was such a thrill. There's nothing like it. It's a radical experience. Tips: Yell out pause if anything feels uncomfortable or not working. Things to Know: There is always someone monitoring your entire game. At the very end, you'll receive a video of your role from a virtual and reality view. The cool part is you can share it or save it as a memory. Another one for the books! Can't wait for new games and challenges to hit for another night out of fun. read more

Please do some additional training with your staff on customer service. We had some time to kill and were in the area before going to an event. I asked if they did walk-ins and if they had time right now, and was told yes to both questions. After PAYING and signing the waivers for my son and nephew, I was then told to come back in 40 min. I let them know I was told there was time now, and the staff person told me there was a group that just walked in behind me and she couldn't manage both groups (they had a reservation, so of course that makes sense for them). But why get me to pay and sign the waivers, with the understanding that they can accommodate us immediately, to then be told to come back in 40 min. Super shady, and I'm not a fan of that kind of service. Even if the VR is amazing, customer service is everything and I'm not booking anything here in the future. read more

This is easily the best VR experience I have had. The gear is more comfortable than other places I have tried and the details in the game are very well done and high quality. It is quite immersive and we had a blast~ I love the myriad of choices they have for games as well as weapons and you get to see hilarious videos of yourself at the very end. The personalized pictures that are embedded in the video are a nice touch too. Overall, it's a very memorable and fun time for friends and family~ read more

Came here with friends for a birthday celebration which seems to be a popular event for this event because I heard a lot of people saying/singing happy birthday. I unfortunately wasn't able to join in on the fun because I can't stand without the assistance of a cane, but they happily brought out a chair for me to watch my group. I took pictures of them having fun playing a zombie game. The girls told me the employees told them to just close their eyes if it gets to scary so not to worry. They helped put on the gear and was very quick. I noticed the fans would turn on sometimes because the players really do get hot playing this active game. At the end, a video of what they played and how the group plays in reality is shown to you as well sent to you to enjoy at home and reminisce. Definitely a good time for all. Their location is upstairs close to the movie theater ticket line and near a whole bunch of restaurants and retail stores. Parking is tight but not really hard to find, even on a rainy evening weekend. read more

This was our third VR game experience with our group of 6 and we had a great time playing Seekers of the Shard! We have done other VR games before, but this was the first one where I felt like we had to kind of rely on each other as a team to get through the challenge! I was super funny to see the playback videos too where we are all freaking out in real life! LOL. I think 6 is the max number of players you can have for this game, or else you will keep running into each other. The play zone isn't particularly big, so you will likely run into each other. The wrist and ankle sensors are not very comfortable, but once you're in the game you kind of forget about it. The game DID lag twice, but after yelling for them to pause the game we were able to get back on track. Overall a really fun experience and hope to be back!! read more

I had previously tried Deadwood Mansion and Seekers of the Shard at other locations, so I had somewhat high expectations. And our recent experience at Bay Street Emeryville did not disappoint. Amber Sky 2088 was fun and imaginatively futuristic. All gear and weapons were fully functional and easy to use through our entire VR session. Located upstairs on Bay Street next to Shake Shack Sandbox VR is fun for the whole family. Came here on a weekday with the whole family (cousins, uncles, aunts, about 20 people) and basically had the whole place to ourselves. It is kind of expensive for 30 minutes of play time I think it's $50/person? Not to mention as we were playing our gametime got cut by accident so we had to restart and finish the last 5 minutes. Since our game was cut, we didn't get the fun video at the end. They rectified the situation by giving us a voucher to come back but for how much we're paying you'd think there wouldn't be as much hiccups. read more

It was a fun experience but I think it heavily depends on who you interact with. I came with my partner and his family as a fun Thanksgiving weekend experience. Understandably they were probably busy and stressed so I can see how customer service can be hard during that time, but I felt the person who picked up the phone and checked us in was incredible rude. Over the phone, our group has mentioned that we wanted to split games but weren't sure what games to pick. The person the phone said they didn't have the time to explain so they said make a reservation and watch the videos online and they can explain more and change it when we get there for our reservation. Warning, don't do that. If you can just choose the game you are going to play during reservations because when we got there, the person that checked us (Viri?) in said we messed up by not choosing and now she needed to fix our mistake and didn't have time for any of our questions. She kept emphasizing that we messed up and she needed to fix it now and our questions were taking up too much time. After we were handed off to other people, it was a very fun experience. They took their time to explain and walk us through what was happening. Overall, unique and worthwhile but not very customer friendly. read more

I felt pressured with upsells from the start. I had to ask the salesmen to please stop. Twice. Then the gun wouldn't work. I had to raise my hand to pause the game twice during the tutorial phase so they could fix the gun. After they fixed the gun, they wouldn't let me actually do the tutorial with a working gun. So, that wasn't fun and it was so representative of the entire thing. I couldn't hear through the headphones and I now have a bruise on my forehead from the headset. I will not be recommending to anyone. If anyone asks, I'll tell them all about how bad that experience was. This sucked expensively, y'all. read more

This was my 2nd ever VR experience. My first experience was just a month earlier so I have one point of comparison. We got to this Emeryville location a few minutes before our 6 PM reservation on a Friday. No issues with check-ins for our Seekers of the Shard game. We had a group of four. Pros: Friendly employees. You interact quite a bit with the employees during setup of the game, in-game if you have issues, and after the game. If the employees at your VR store aren't personable, that will impact your experience quite a bit. Good game play length. I think the experience was 30 minutes. Our arms were getting tired by the end! I thought there was a decent amount of action elements outside of just straight fighting. Meaning that dodging and ducking matter for some obstacles. Also needing to look up and down for some enemies and not everything being at eye level. Another element was having to kill imminent close-up threats as well as ranged attacks. It really felt like a co-op game. There were several times we had fallen allies and you can heal each other by touching their shoulder. At the end of the game, there are a few keepsake videos of your gameplay experience - these are really well done and make for wonderful memories. Bonus for people celebrating a birthday. I was celebrating my birthday a month and a half late - would recommend this! Cons- I forget the character choice names, but there are two classes that are roughly equivalent - a fire knight and an ice knight - where you get a melee (close quarters) weapon and a ranged attack (magic that you can shoot). The third class is a Ranger that only has one type of attack - a crossbow. Feel like this third class gets the shaft in terms of gameplay. The game was quite glitchy. We had to stop the game three times by raising our hands. Took about 30 seconds to reset and get the game going again. Luckily two stops happened at the beginning of the game and one stop was during a natural game break, so it didn't really affect the gameplay that much. Only 2 fire knights, 2 ice knights, and 2 rangers available. One male/one female for each. If you have all guys or gals, some may have to play a different gender (not really a big deal). If you have more than 4 players, some people will be stuck with the inferior (in my opinion) ranger. To sum up the experience, we all had a blast. My wife said "I never knew my face could sweat" which is the quote of the year. Lots of good memories to look back on between the videos Sandbox provides and the pictures we took inside the building. read more

Love the concept of this company and how there are different VR experiences to choose from. They're all adventure based, but some are scarier than others so having the options is a plus. While there are no clear steps or guidance on what to do when you walk in, the staff is there to accompany you and share next steps for getting the waiver signed and ensure that you're set up for your gaming experience. I'm giving 4/5 stars because the tech doesn't seem super reliable. Our initial visit was for Saturday but right before our call time we were informed of a couple of rooms being down and that we needed to reschedule. On our second attempt, there were audio issues in our room and the equipment looks visibly worn down. Other than that, I'm excited to experience this again because it was really fun. read more

I've never tried a VR experience before, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but this was definitely fun! They offer different rooms for each party and have different programs including the popular Squid Games. Once you're ready, you strap on all the equipment and put the VR device on. I heard that you get a workout, but I didn't believe it until I tried it. Whew, you do move around quite a bit, especially if you pick a good weapon! My brain knew it was fake, but that didn't prevent the full force of my reactions lol. Loved the video outtakes they did of how we looked in real life while playing the game read more
