I called 511 because I had a tire blow out on the freeway. I was stuck on the side of the freeway and I didn't feel safe. The operator told me that she would report it to the highway control, and they would dispatch somebody to come help me, before I even hung up, the tow truck had pulled up behind me. He had been patrolling the area and saw that my car was pulled over. William was kind confident and changed my tire for me. He even had to pull out stuff from the back of my car to get to the spare. SANDAG 511- Freeway Service Patrol Program - Towing Near Me

Right now 6/03/2025 @4:15pm going eastbound on the 54 between Plaza Bonita Rd and Woodman Ave this tow truck driver pulled out of the left side of the freeway right in front of driver's in the fast lane, didn't turn his signal light on until he was already in the lane. Then he proceeds to go all the way to the right lane cutting in front of vehicles with no regard. Then he was driving on the bumpy line on the right side of the road, swerving in and out of the white line on the right. He really jeeds to be tested for drug, alcohol or a medical condition cause that was not ok. I didn't get a picture of the whole license plate but it's x7023V2 read more

I didn't even know this was a thing! This is an amazing service available to us. Maybe a minute from when I pulled over to the side of the freeway, William happened to see me and pulled up behind me. I was starting to dial AAA, but he was able to help me right away with a free gallon of gas and made sure that my car was able to start once I got it. He really saved my day! My tire had a complete blowout on the 15 at 5:30 am while I was trying to get my 85 year old father to San Diego for his lung cancer. I somehow made it across 4 lanes of traffic on a shredded tire. I immediately called AAA, but while I was on the phone with them I see headlights pull up behind me. I don't know who was patrolling in the Escondido area of the 15 south on May 14 at 5:30 in the morning, but he was awesome. He had our tire changed within 15 minutes. He was kind and professional and we appreciated him so much. It was because of him that my father made it in to see his doctor on time. There was no charge. This is a wonderful service and I hope San Diego always has funding for it. It saved us. read more

When I asked for help, the woman from customer support hung up on me twice, and when I called the last time, she told me to contact 911 because she couldn't determine my location, even though she had initially given me the correct address of my location herself!!! My back left tire went flat almost immediately. Last time, after having someone else change my flat tire, I learned about 511. When I called, I got a prompt saying 'press 4 for roadside assistance' then the recording said 'this service is unavailable at this time' so I called back and waited for a dispatcher to answer. The process took about five minutes. Within 15 minutes a tow truck arrived, the service person wasn't overly friendly (he didn't introduce himself) but he was efficient and gave me advice about what speed to drive with a spare. I didn't receive any paperwork but I was back on the road in less than 35 minutes from the time I pulled off onto the highway shoulder. read more

I didn't even know this service existed until today when my daughter experienced a roadside emergency and pulled over on the freeway when a tire blew. She began to cal AAA but before she even reached someone on the call, an angel in a tow truck appeared right then, as circumstances aligned and must have happened to be passing by at that exact moment to provide much needed help. Raphael put on her spare for her so she could get home safely (until we could get to the tire shop the next day). Wow. This service is amazing. I hit a massive pothole in the fast lane on eastbound 94 a 1/2 mile from Euclid exit. Immediately knew I had a flat tire and pulled over to the shoulder on the right where an onramp and merge dumped onto 94. A gnarly spot. I was shaken and about to call AAA when Karen spotted me and pulled behind me. It had been less than 2 minutes. She put my spare tire on and the whole thing was done in less than 10 minutes. I was not aware of this service until today, and I could cry in gratitude. Oh My Gahhhhhhhhh!!!!! WHO KNEW??? Today, while traveling South on Interstate 5 Freeway, I found myself in a really unfortunate predicament with my MBenz. My 'low tire pressure' light popped up on my dash three days ago, indicating a low left, front tire. I was headed to Discount Tires in Pacific Beach to have them ALL checked, because I know tires should be checked every 4-6 weeks and lately, me being super-super-busy would be an understatement. *****CRINGEWORTHY MOMENT AHEAD!!!!!***** All of a sudden, what looked like an orange construction cone came flying toward my car and wedged itself underneath my vehicle. I drove a little bit to see if it would un-lodge itself. It didn't. Not knowing WHEREUPON the 'thing' was, I pulled over to assess it, turned on my flashers, and when I looked underneath, I saw it was lodged beside the tire that had low air pressure. Oh no! Wonderful, wonderful! NOT! I was fully afraid to drive on it, even though I could see my exit sign close enough to read it. I was afraid a sharp piece might puncture the tire. -Enter Mercedes Benz Roadside Assistance- I'll note here I PAID FOR Roadside Assistance when I got my vehicle. I waited on hold for what seemed like an eternity, only to be connected to a rude Mercedes Benz employee who pretended he couldn't hear me through my Car Play. He condescendingly instructed me on how to pinpoint my exact location on 'Maps'. (Uhm...excuse me for not knowing BECAUSE NOTHING LIKE THIS HAS HAPPENED BEFORE!!) After he seemed sooo irritated that I had the nerve to call Mercedes when I was in distress, and for SOMETHING I PAID FOR IN ADVANCE, he then advised me someone would be at my location to assist IN 90 MINUTES!!!!! Does anybody in La Jolla own a luxury MBenz, or a BMW or an Audi, an Acura or any other luxury vehicle??? You do know La Jolla is Rich Country, right? They ALL do!!! I told him forthright that I did NOT have the time to wait that long and that I had a lunch date with my daughter ... then instructed him to "cancel that" and hung up as he rambled something about MBenz and their WONDERFUL service. -Exit Mercedes Benz Roadside Assistance- ***DEEP BREATHS*** What to do ... what to do... Just then, An Angel appeared in a white tow truck immediately behind me!!! Who IS this Miracle Man sent to me from the Heavens above??? I don't know WHO this man wearing a bright yellow vest, dressed in a blue uniform walking toward me IS, but I think I just prayed to God Himself right then and there! *Makes the sign of The Cross* Hallelujah!!! WHO IS THIS????? He walked up to my passenger window. I instructed my daughter to lower her window half-way. He asked, "Are you in distress?", as he handed me his card through the half-opened window. "Yessir, I am definitely in distress!", I told him, and explained the dire straits I was in. He told us to stay in the vehicle, then proceeded to look underneath and dislodged the offending 'thing'! He held it up to show me. 'IT' was an orange hard hat!!!! This man works for SANDAG (San Diego Association of Governments), and they provide FREE roadside assistance in the San Diego area. I've provided a map of locations their roving fleet services. Folks, this service is funded by our U.S. tax dollars, State Transit Fund, SANDAG, Caltrans, SB1, and CHP (California Highway Patrol). On average, it takes them less than 9 minutes to respond! Impressive! Some of the free services they perform are: * Provide you a Gallon of Gas * Jump Start * Water for your Radiator * Change a Flat * And even tow you if they can't get your vehicle running, to a location designated by CHP * Aannnndddd ... even dislodge an object you can't reach wedged under your vehicle!!! ALL FREE!!! I really want to thank the kind gentleman who helped me today! I'm sorry I don't have your name! I wish I had his card still. I don't know what happened to it, as I tucked it in my door's side pocket. I went to 4-5 places afterwards, so all I can imagine that happened is the card with his name on it must have blown out the window. So thank you, Guardian Angel, for helping the stranded lady and her daughter on the 5 Freeway right by the Garnet Avenue exit. All you ladies and men in San Diego should know now ... just DIAL 511!!!!! Javier Garcia is my saving angel armed with tools in his chariot ( well his truck)! It took myself over an hour to lower my spare out from under my SUV. Cars, Trucks and big semis flying by making my SUV push from side to side with each burst of pressured air forced upon it. Javier pulled up with no fear asking me if I needed help and Im not to proud to say Yes Please! No joke he had me safely back in my car with the gnarly SUV tire changed out in about 10 minutes! My car broke down and a woman in a tow truck pulled up behind me no more than 30 seconds later. She asked me if I needed help and offered to tow my car to a safer location. Astonished and relieved, I accepted. We didn't discuss payment or the company she works for so I figured she was just a really good person. After loading up my car, we started making our way towards the exit and she told me about this 511 hotline she works for. I had NO IDEA these wonderful people existed! She was so sweet and we talked about my crappy Prius that I love and we were able to enjoy a laugh she was just all around a great energy to come into contact with during such a stressful time. I never got her name, but her Survey Number is: HRVPEBF You gotta promote this woman! She has genuinely good energy and I felt well taken care of. Oh! And, I'm 7 months pregnant. I had a flat tire on the 15N 78split while in the Fast track lane. I was waiting for a tow truck because I was told they would not change my tire in such a dangerous spot which I understand. But I had four grandchildren with me so called for my husband to come get them. The tow truck was an hour to an hour and a half away. About 15 minutes later a tow truck with lights on came up behind me and it was the freeway service that I had never heard of. I got a flat on Monday at 7:00 am, I called Statefarms roadside assist. only to be told that I had to wait for an hour to find out how soon they would arrive. I was looking at an hour wait time (at least). All of a sudden I look up through my rearview mirror to see a big white truck behind me. A very kind young man gets out and offers to help me. His name is Diego, he was very kind, professional and quick. He quickly changed my tire, put the little spare on, and suggested I get the damaged one fixed as soon as possible for my safety. The spare tire is only for limited use. I offered to give him a token of appreciation for a cup of coffee. He quickly refused to accept my token of appreciation. He said that he was there to help anyone in need, this service is free. In this case, I was the person in need. He saw me stranded with my hazard lights on and stopped to help me out. Unbelievable!! A couple of months ago my car stalled out on I-5 in La Jolla on a Saturday near La Jolla Village Drive. I was told it would be about an hour for the tow truck company that I called through my insurance to arrive. About 5 minutes later a Free Service Patrol tow truck showed up and was able to get my car more to the side of the road, so that I was not so close to the freeway and then towed me to the city parking lot off of La Jolla Village Drive. I called the first tow truck company to let them know my new location and was able to safely wait for them in the parking lot. Brandon was the driver with Free Service Patrol and he was like a guardian angel who suddenly appeared. He was so nice and friendly and made me feel so much better after the scary experience of my car suddenly stalling out on I-5. I had never heard of The Freeway Service Patrol and didn't know that they are always going up and down the freeway looking for people who need help. It is a wonderful service and they are lucky to have Brandon working for them. read more

Unprofessional service from the 511 tow driver who responded to my husband and I's call about one of our truck's tires becoming flat on the Northbound I-5. We had called to get assistance on the side of the freeway when our tire had become flat and were told by 511 dispatch that they were going to help send a tow driver but were unsure about the time the driver would arrive but we were appreciative that the dispatcher at least was being honest about the response time. When the driver did arrive they had asked us what was the reason for the dispatch service and when we told him it was because we needed help to safely change the tire he started getting angry. He scolded and degraded us for having called to get help. We would never wish for anyone who may ever become stranded on the side of the freeway have this experience of being made felt useless and disregarded by a 511 personal especially when it is stated on the 511 webpage that their mission is to provide; "... a free service that improves safety for stranded motorists." Very disappointed in their serive and when I called to file a complaint to the dispatch call, I was told I would be receiving a follow up call later in the day about the incident that had occurred with the tow driver but I have not received a call. read more

Our daughter had oil leaking from her car and smoke billowing from both ends on I5 going North near Carmel Valley Road on the 56 slip road. Two employees in separate trucks showed up within 15 minutes to check on my daughter to make sure she was ok. They waited until I arrived as well as AAA to arrive. Great use of tax payer money!! My daughter's front tire blew out on the 805 N near Balboa Ave. AAA gave us wait time of 2 hours and luckily, Roberto M of FSP program showed up and took us to a safer area off the freeway to wait. Roberto was so kind and the presence of FSP almost made up for the 4 hours we ended up having to wait for AAA. It was a huge blessing to be able to wait away from the zooming cars and big rigs flying by on the 805. I felt that any of the big rigs or small trucks could easily crush our tiny Prius with a slight swerve. We are so grateful for this service; we had no idea it existed and very happy that the state of Ca can actually do some good with taxpayer money! The only great thing that happened to me this day. My car broke down in the center of the freeway on the 15, busy and fast traffic. My engine shut off in the center lane. I had to coast to the shoulder it was not a safe place. I got out through the passengers door and was convinced someone was going to hit the back of my car at 70mph while I was climbing through. I grabbed my stuff and started hiking away from the car and towards a gulley that was the only thing I could find not within 5 feet of the freeway. I hadn't made any calls yet because my goal was to get safe first. As I was walking toward the gully I heard a honk and looked behind me. The guy checked out my car and towed me to a safe place for free. Saved my life and no cost. That's 5 stars all day every day. I didn't know this service existed. It almost made up for the horrendous experience I had directly after when my insurance sent a different company to tow my car to the mechanic.... read more

My tire blew out on the 805 South as I was about to try to exit Kearny Mesa Blvd. I was on the shoulder and the freeway was very busy, cars driving very fast. It was very scary.
